The Chinese version was published in 2012 by 尚禾 which has closed down. A collection of short stories in the countryside/rural towns of Japan about 3 couples with different degrees of injury. I like the first story the most, the second story is quite sweet too, however the third story is a quite cruel and reminded me of Etsuko’s More Than Words…
表題作 王様のベッド The seme 古賀 is an electrician from the cable company, venturing into the deep mountain where the uke 遠野 lonely sculptor lives. There’s no TV signal and phone signal and the two got trapped in the house by the snow storm. The uke’s younger brother is gay and got injured when his car fell off the road a few weeks ago, so the uke has been regretting pushing his brother to live with the boyfriend. Due to the uke’s photosensitivity condition he cannot be under the sun and never leaves the house. The seme got asked to be the uke’s model for sculpture because of his fit physique… Can they overcome the distance and severe weather in the future?
同時収録作品 さくらんぼ The uke works in the student council and is very busy with lots of tasks. The seme is a social butterfly but he is especially polite around the uke and remembers that uke likes cherry flavored candy. When the uke’s glasses broke and the rain is coming, the seme sent him home at the back of the bike. When the uke’s sight is blurred, he’s more brave to ask seme straightforward questions.
同時収録作品 花 The seme 九門 and uke 小津 are both 2nd year high school students. The uke is the center of heated rumour because his girl cousin 桔梗 recently passed away from terminal illness but she was pregnant with his child. She had crush on the uke ever since they were little, knew that he is gay but still begged him to fulfill her death wish, to break her virginity so she can go to heaven. The uke’s uncle has been beating him up ever time they meet, even though the uke’s been bringing flowers to her grave every day. The seme noticed the uke’s lil garden in school and was intrigued by the rumour, so he had intimate encounters with the uke in exchange for the true story.
Playful and a little chaotic. The “king” was eccentric, and the dynamic with the more grounded love interest made for some funny, offbeat moments. Not super deep, but had its charms.
A great collection of short stories. Really, really touching - those stories have more depth to them than some other mangaka's series, really. I loved this. (And I'm upgrading the Match Seller to five stars, too.)
