A journey through landscape and fatherhood. Mark Charlton’s debut collection of creative non-fiction captures one man’s astonished journey into fatherhood. As well as the author’s own experiences as a parent, the stories also emerge out of strong connections to his childhood, local landscapes, and fractured relationships with his parents. “What distinguishes Mark Charlton is an absolute honesty allied to reflective wisdom and a fresh, alert eye. [...] These reflections are a treat not to be missed. And more than that, they’re a liberal education. They quietly, modestly, enhance our understanding of the world we inhabit in its every aspect.” Jim Perrin
Maybe I am destined to be prejudiced against all who posess second homes and consequently judge harshly but before I had come to the latter understanding I was already finding the navel gazing tiresome . We are excellent cyclists, naturalists ,climbers, walkers .Tough bodied . If only I had time for such introspection. The most I manage is a 30 minute run daily when I am not needed elsewhere. I recognise the writing style, a friend has attended the same workshop. A bit of a curate's egg this one.I think. And the man has time for therapy too. That being said I am no fan of the essay format so maybe this never was going to work for me. Oh and discovered that this chap was company secretary for WHSmith. Now has some for other senior roll.Doors opened easily ....cynic .
