Hiromu Arakawa (author: 荒川弘) is a Japanese manga artist, best known for Fullmetal Alchemist (鋼の錬金術師 Hagane no renkinjutsushi). Her real name is Hiromi Arakawa (荒川弘美).
Arakawa was born and raised on a dairy farm in Hokkaidō. She thought of being a manga artist since she was little. After graduating high school, she took oil painting classes while working on her family's farm. During that time, she also created dōjinshi manga with her friends and drew yonkoma for a magazine. After eight years she moved to Tōkyō and started out as assistant writer for Hiroyuki Etō. Her debut as manga artist is in 1999 with STRAY DOG. In 2001 she started working on her famous and award winning series Fullmetal Alchemist, that soon gets a successful anime adaptation. Other works include Silver Spoon (銀の匙 Silver Spoon, Gin no saji Silver Spoon).
Alchemists are scientists. We don't believe in unprovable concepts like "god."
You know the books that you've read so many times and, subsequently, the shows based on those books you've spent so much of your life watching? The ones where you've done this to the point that writing a review about how much you love it seems nearly impossible? It's so much to the point that I'm convinced I don't have the right words to express how amazing this series truly is. So, while I'm beginning with an attempted review at a re-released version of volume 1 of Fullmetal Alchemist by Hiromu Arakawa, I have to admit that I am already certain I won't be quite capable of doing it justice.
I've Finally Started A Collection
This particular edition, the Fullmetal hardcover version isn't quite the same as the first volume initially published. Some translations have been cleaned up to be more accurate and, instead of containing only four chapters it contains six. Therefore, this book combines half of the original volume 2 with this new one. A hardcover that has the wonderful addition of some colored pages and extra sketches, I was over the moon with excitement when I got my hands on my own copy, something I've been meaning to do for quite a long time now.
It's Surprising How Much They Fit In
The story of the Elric brothers and their quest to restore their bodies after a botched alchemic attempt to bring their deceased mother back to life begins as it always has. We first meet Edward and Alphonse following a lead on the philosopher's stone, what is purported as an alchemical amplifier. They are certain that it is the philosopher's stone that will eventually give them the power to return the bodies they lost whilst trying to save their mother.
This quest leads them to a town called Liore and its priest, a man fooling an entire town into following him as a prophet for the sun god known as Leto. Later, it will lead them to an alchemist who specializes in bio-alchemy. And if you've read the manga or seen the shows, you'll know exactly what I'm talking about.
The first brings a rather amusing, yet devastating to the people, debacle which exposes the lying priest. The second is an emotional rollercoaster involving an adorable young girl and her dog.
I Do Genuinely Love This Series
I adore everything about this book and the series it is a part of. From the hilarious, occasionally overdramatic, protective, and caring main character Edward, to the sweet and centered character of Alphonse. Their story is one that I connected with quite easily emotionally and continue to do each time I revisit it.
I'm not really a huge manga reader or a massive anime fan. In fact, to date, I've only ever read two manga series and this is the only anime I've ever actually watched all the way through. I fully believe that anyone who hasn't immersed themselves in this wonderful world and characters is missing out on one of the best stories that ever existed.
Reading the manga for the first time but I’m feeling so nostalgic 😭 I was forced to watch FMAB in like 2015/2016? And it holds such a special place in my heart.
Spoilers! The impressive story-telling and dynamic characters make this book a must-read. The blending of humorous and serious tones make it even more enjoyable. Some books are fun to read, and some make their readers feel inspired. I had both experiences with this book. While it is fun to read, there feels like a deeper purpose than just a fun story. The author really knows how to pull at the readers heartstring with Ed and Al trying to get their original bodies back while dealing with never seeing their mom again and never knowing what happened to their father. Not everything is what is seems in this book which I love! It makes you question everything and to look for any kind clues or foreshadowing. Drugs- there are no use of drugs in this book. Sex- there is a character Lust in this book who is depicted with a very womanly figure with a low cut dress which shows a lot of cleavage. Language- the characters swear a little and the words contained in this book are: damn, bastard, and hell. Violence- this is a moderately violent book. Many fight scenes where people get seriously injured, a character Gluttony swallowing someone, someone being stabbed through the head, a man loosing part of his ear, a scene of characters loosing limbs, an attempt at raising the dead, and depictions of death. Rock and Roll-some scenes of characters drinking, but not the main characters. There is depictions of war in this book; a genocide of an entire race.
Fresh after watching the anime i was so intrigued to enrich my knowledge of this story by reading the manga.(i know there are two animes with two completely different endings which i have conflicting opinions about but i would get into that over here) after just reading the first two volumes i have to say that so far the story of Edward and Alphonse Elric is pretty similar from the manga to the anime. This is definitely a good read and i recommend it alot i really love the art style of the manga and the story and plot is very clever ,it implements some elements of magic from harry potter and other elements of science from typical sci fi movies and creates something unique for the viewer
A classic among anime/manga. For anyone getting into manga, this is a great starter. The majority of manga fans have already read it/seen the anime version, so it's an almost guaranteed conversation starter. The story follows two brothers who, after losing their limbs in a traumatic childhood accident, attempt to find a mythical "philosopher's stone" to return themselves to their original form. What makes this story so captivating is the character development and the slow but steady reveal of the true plot.
This is a short but interesting start to the Full Metal Alchemist world. We get introduced to our two protagonists Edward and Alphonse Elric. We learn that these two are alchemists which are essentially just futuristic scientists with a spice of interesting patterns which possibly could reference religious components however these alchemists are agnostic. This book gave me a good in between of keeping me interested and entertained. I will definitely read the second volume.
One of the best manga of all time. I can't think of any real complaints with anything in this manga, it's a must read and one I would recommend to anyone. It has everything, great characters that actually develop. Intrigue. Action. Heartfelt moments. I can't get enough of it.
i think it’s good. It’s funny some parts and it’s serious some parts. It’s very intense and i never get bored reading it. The story is deep and it’s very unexpected. The art is very good and it makes the book more imagineble. It’s very unpredictable, there’s a lot twists that change the whole story so it’s always interesting.
