Though I was born in the South of England - my parents moved back to the North when I was one year old, and I have lived in Yorkshire ever since. I spent a few years as an infant teacher, but when my children were young I started making picture books for them and became hooked on writing. I love drawing and painting, but my main love is writing, often using the legends and history around me as inspiration.

As a child I can honestly say I loved this book with a burning passion. When I reread it a couple of years ago I was not disappointed. I really enjoyed the way this book brought to life the hardship, sacrifices and joy of life in an early Victorian fishing village. Begs the question 'Why is Theresa Tomlinson not more famous?'

Libro molto breve.

The Flither Pickers by Theresa Tomlinson
If you want to know what the little seaside town of Whitby was really like in its Victorian heyday, this is the book to read. Historically accurate, it brings the little town to life and tells the touching story of one of the the poor, brave girls without whose work the fishermen could not have caught the fish which were their livelihood. Geared towards younger readers, it is meaty enough for adults. One of Theresa's best books ever!
