Most cows spend their lives in a pasture, happily chewing on grass, but not Shamoo. Shamoo yearned for something more, something like the sea. His desire to swim in the ocean leads him to Baleen, a six-ton humpback whale who becomes both a friend and teacher. Will Shamoo stay with his new friend or return to the pasture? This lovely children's book from noted artist Ros Hill is filled with his beautiful color illustrations.
An odd little story of a cow (Shamoo) who really loves to swim. One day a rail on the his fence breaks and he takes to the open ocean. He swims too far and would drown, if not for a whale (Baleen) befriending and rescuing him. The story wraps up with Shamoo taking his cow friends out into the ocean where they make whale friends of their own. I didn't particularly care for this story, but the boys (5 yo and 3 yo) liked it well enough.
It had such potential, and didn't quite meet it. The story was fine but the writing wasn't quite the thing. Some of the pictures made me laugh--for my own reasons. The title is the best, and I find it funnier having recently been to SeaWorld.
