"Collage has a long and distinguished history... The story begins with the invention of paper in China around 200 B.C., but the earliest paper collages are believed to be made by twelfth-century Japanese calligraphers, who prepared surfaces for their poems by gluing bits of paper and fabric to create a background for brushstrokes. In the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries in the Near East, craftsmen cut and pasted intricate designs and used marbled papers in bookbinding...

Artists in medieval times often enhanced religious images with gemstones, elegant fibers, relics and precious metals. During the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, nuns used cut and colored papers to decorate bookmarks for their prayer books. Frequently they selected materials for their symbolism, a practice that continues in contemporary collage.

Renaissance artisans for the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries in Western Europe pasted paper and fabric to decorate the backgrounds of coats-of-arms in genealogical records. Cut-paper silhouettes appeared in the Netherlands in the seventeenth century. Craftsmen in many parts of the world used seeds, shells, straw, feathers and butterfly wings as collage material. Shamans and holy men secured these and other materials to masks used in sacred rituals. All of these materials appear in artists' collages today." Chapter 2 - The Origins of Collage - pg. 18

A beautifully informative and well laid out book that provides a wide range of styles, techniques, and tips that will offer Inspiration to the novice and broaden the scope for established Collagists. I will be returning to this work often as My Creative journey unfolds.

Wat is er toch veel verschil tussen creativiteitsboeken. Dit boek slaat voor mijn gevoel op een aantal vlakken de plank net mis.
Waar ik me het meest aan stoorde, was de toon. You should use this en you should do it this way, je moet dit materiaal gebruiken, en je compositie zus indelen en de kleuren zo gebruiken …

I love this book! As a watercolorist, charcoal and pastel artist, this book is jammed with texhniques and ideas and inspiration. After borrowing it from the library 7 times i concluded it was well worth the investment to add to my art library.

This book was very interesting and I took away from it a few new ideas but nothing that I have not since before. I was a good review of some techniques for me especially collage composition. I gave this book 3.5 out of 5 stars!

Very informative and detailed. I've read many book on this subject but I think this one is the best. What I like the most is how the author explains about archival materials, that's very important if you want to sell your work, for example.

Wow!!

This book is filled to the brim with techniques and information.

Not all the techniques or work spoke to me equally, but there were some techniques I had never heard of before, or seen before in any of the myriad of art books or art workshops I have taken and I was incredibly inspired.

The techniques are all well described and there are plenty of photos and tips to take the techniques in different directions. This book also introduced me to some collage artists that really excited me in where how they are doing collage, which completely reframed the possibilities of collage for me.

Especially these artists:

Bob Kilvert
Cody F Miller
Aki Sogabe

The 60 "projects" are not all projects of step by step recreate what you see, and in that most of the projects are almost prompts. From using bought and found papers to making your own, the variety of work is stunning, and I imagine there is something that will speak to most people.

There were some techniques that I had never seen before, such as making crystalline papers and making your own paper, and I was really excited throughout the book, even if the specific technique or finished piece did not necessarily call out to me.

There is good information on different mediums and substrates. As well as information on how they can be used. A lot of it was really useful information such as different uses, preparation and additional useful comments. There is also really good information on the elements and principles of design, and colour theory information. Sometimes (especially if you are self-taught I imagine! :)), you can be a bit gung-ho about things, and that is not necessarily a bad thing, but it is also useful to see a complete and thorough explanation of some things, and to gain a bit more knowledge.

I really recommend to this book to not only collage artists but to everyone as a good overall grounding and information that can be utilised for all mediums.

Another must-have for your reference shelf. This is a technique book that covers a lot of information, how-tos, whys, and other questions about collage. If you are using ripped-up magazines, it's time to read this book and move on into so many other interesting directions--bricollage (using stuff you have in your closet) painting papers, using tissue. Have a problem? Look it up in this book. I accidentally bought two, and so far, one is in my studio and the other in the family room. If you live in my house, you never know when you might need a collage problems solved.

Collage techniques from a master...from making paper or using some of the 60 project suggestions, there is so much to explore.

Recently realized that my husband and I own one of the paintings (Canada geese) used as an example.
