One season. I just need to stick it out for one season.
Ryan Preston has done seven years in the NHL and just before he signs his contract extension, his twin brother, Liam calls in a favour and asks Ryan to take his place and help an old friend out by playing in the UK for a season. He agrees, but only on the premise that it's for one season, and he'll be back in Canada before he knows it.
Jenna Roberts has been surrounded by hockey her entire life. Her best friend plays for the city's team and her uncle is a coach for the junior team; she knows what hockey boys are like. She has just been made redundant and has to give up her apartment, all within 6 months of being newly single.
Ryan doesn't date and Jenna has sworn off dating after some failed attempts, so they can just be friends, right?
If I could climb inside this book and live, I'd be booking a first class ticket. Each chapter I read of this book I felt more and more of it seeping into my bones and wrapping me up in the cosiest blanket.
Ryan is a swoonworthy hockey player who's only here for a season but what will happen when he crosses paths with Jenna? Will that all change or will he continue to keep his sights strictly on hockey?
If you haven't fallen in love with these two by the end of the book, then you've missed out.
Between the pages of this book is the perfect amount of swoon, spice and hockey.
So grab a cup of tea and dive into this brand new hockey romance 🏒💙
Thank you to the author for the e-ARC and a signed paperback 🫶🏼🩷 these thoughts are my own.
I was really worried about reading this because I found myself connecting with the author on a personal level, however I finally was able to start it (I had others to finish first) and I devoured it in just a few hours.
This book follows the whirlwind romance of Ryan and Jenna, but that bonus scene has me drooling for Liam. Of course, I love Ryan but… well, I’ll save my reasons to send directly to Alys and keep them off this review. Hehe.
Hockey romance is the only romance I typically read (unless it’s fantasy or dark) and this did not disappoint.
I’m officially invested in the series.
*as per usual, the only reason it doesn’t get 5 stars from me is because this isn’t a book I would re-read* however, that being said, I would give this a 4.75* rating. It’s a fantastic book!
The Import Slot was an easy to read novel, it took me less 24 hours to read it.
For me, I guess the plot was a bit unbelievable. You have a NHL career hockey athlete that gives up renegotiating a contract to take a year off and travel to the UK to fill an import slot, because his twin brother asked him to? An athlete who was written as one whose sole focus has always been his career in hockey. I love my siblings but I’m not potentially throwing away my career for them *shrugs*
Aside from that the story was decent, I didn’t really feel like there were any major twists in the plot, nothing that really got me excited about the novel. The characters were written well but I didn’t find myself truly invested in anyone. The actual hockey action, the play by play descriptions written pertaining to the matches played were phenomenal though, written extremely well. The novel ends on what I think was intended to be a cliffhanger but I found it to be pretty predictable. This isn’t a bad book, I just personally didn’t connect much with it.
I received an advance reader copy and am leaving my review voluntarily.
ARC REVIEW! Firstly I’m so grateful to be part of the arc readers for this book! For me when I started the book I struggled to get into it and I did have to put it down for a little while till I was in the right mindset to read it, but when I picked it up again I love it so much! Ryan and Jenna’s relationship is just amazing their chemistry is phenomenal. It’s very cute and fluffy but then the spice is just the perfect amount of heart racing spice it left me speechless and I am a sucker for a good spicy book! The ending was amazing and leaves you on a cliffhanger I cannot wait for the next book!!
Holy crap, what a book that was, Not only did Alys write a phenomenal book but she also made me fall in love with her characters. This book has a lot of characters in it, which can be difficult for anyone to write, but she smashed it in her debut novel alone. I can find it difficult to keep up with everyone's names and who they are to the main characters, but Alys made it easy to follow. This book made me cry, laugh and all round full of joy. We were promised spice in this book and my goodness did she deliver on that one. Not too much spice and not too little. This is one of the best ARC's I have read and I am proud of Alys and what she has achieved.
Ryan Preston was only supposed to stay in the UK for one season but Jenna Roberts was the reason he wanted to stay. For his whole life Hockey has been everything to him and making it to the NHL at a young age he had succeeded in his goals. But one trip to the UK and one cute brown haired, brown eyed girl was enough for him to see his future. He felt like he didn't want or need to play Hockey in the big leagues anymore to be happy in life as long as he has his girl beside him, he's always going to be happy.
BUT ON A SERIOUS NOTE THOUGH. THAT. ENDING. THOUGH. I ALMOST THREW MY KINDLE BECAUSE I NEEEED BOOK 2 ALREADY
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I don't even know where to start... From the moment I saw Alys talking about this book on Instagram and read the tropes I just knew I had to read it and thank all gods I was fortunate enough to be part of the ARC team.
I'm in love with this book. Truthfully. I was hooked from the first chapter and literally couldn't stop reading - I read it all in one sitting!
Ryan and Jenna are such loveable and realistic characters - every character is - and that just made it all the better.
When Ryan landed in the UK to help his brother out he had his mind set on one thing only - get through the one season, play hockey and get out back to the NHL. But all his plans went out the window. The second he saw Jenna, he knew he was in trouble but could he even try to stay away? Jenna is bff's with a hockey player and she always swore to herself that she wouldn't date one but then she meets Ryan and no matter how many times she says they should just be friends it's getting hard to ignore all the tension.
I got to say, the way these two were awfully sweet and - wait for it because you're going to love this - communicated was everything! Their relationship was, honestly perfect and look I don't even want to get started on the spicy scenes because oof 🥵 it's always the sweet boys isn't it?
Bottom line is, you should definitely read this book the second it comes out and there's not even need to thank me later. I promise you won't regret and you'll fall in love with these characters as much as I did. And then you'll also join me in not so patiently waiting for the rest of the series.
Absolutely loved. I’ve been in a hockey-read mood lately and this book hit the spot. I especially like the dual POV because I personally love seeing the story unfold through the eyes of different characters.
I absolutely loved the characters. Jenna is so relatable because we all have the one ex…you know which one I’m talking about. She’s trying to find herself again and get back into dating after the breakup with said ex (just not hockey players, that’s her rule). I love Jenna because she’s sincere, brave, independent, and an overall great person.
Enter Ryan Preston. NHL star, family oriented, very private. He moved from Canada and his NHL team to the UK to help out his brother. I love how Alys wrote his character. She slowly reveals parts of him to us as he slowly opens up to Jenna. It’s like we’re getting the full story along with her (or not too far ahead of her). He’s a humble, down to earth kind of guy even with his fame and career. He’s sweet, caring, protective, and causes Jenna to break her one rule, absolutely no hockey players.
It is written in UK English so some terminology/things were different but it was such an easy adjustment that it didn’t distract away from the book. The plot was great it was the perfect mix of hockey and romance (if you know what I mean). I thought the pacing was good and I didn’t stop once I started, I think I read this in 2 days.
10/10 definitely recommend.
Thank you to the author for providing me with an ARC. this is my voluntary and honest review
This book .. this book had me hooked from the start. Even like two chapters in, i slapped myself for reading it one morning because, how can i go to work not being able to read on.
This is a Hockey Romance, and it contains a bit more hockey than i would normally see i what i have read, but there is a perfect balance between the romance and the hockey, and there is a reason for the hockey to be written in where it is, and not there to just fill out the story.
Jenna is easy to relate to. Normal girl, looking for a job, looking for a new place to live, douchy ex, we have all been there. And then comes Ryan Preston. NHL hockey star that takes an Import Slot for one year in UK, to help out his brother. Ryan is a private person and we see very little of who he is in the beginning, but as he opens up to Jenna, we learn more. I like that we don’t get all the secrets from the start and learn them as we grow with the characters. Ryan has some issues with his father and his brother, but playing a year in the UK, with his old childhood friend and then falling in love with Jenna, opens up a new world for him and he has a lot to think about before going back to Canada in 12 month. Will he get a new contract, will he stay?, will Jenna go with him? Will his brother get his NHL call-up? (Well i am not spoiling so you better get the book and read it)
I am so so in love with Ryan and Jenna. Their insta-love connection with witty banter right from the start. The way they tease each other and flirt around so much. I love it. I could feel all the butterflies. Their chemistry really shines through all through the book, and the spice.. Wowowow!! Its getting hot in here.
The Import Slot is an insta-love hockey romance, where he falls first, and he falls hard. Ryan is a super flirty MMC, there is NO third act breakup in this book, but you do get a whole lot of loveable sidecharacters and i can not wait to follow them all in the following books.
I was one lucky lady to receive an Arc for the amazing book, and it is my choice to leave my honest review here so you can se how much i love it.
If you love hockey romances with actually hockey in it and you are a sucker for a dirty, flirty MMC, then get this book.!
Having never read a Hockey romance I was thrilled when Alys asked me to Arc review the import slot .
I mean what’s an import slot ?? I learnt it’s a term used when team transfer internationally happen for a season within sports teams !
What a superb book the story of Ryan a NHL player that comes to the U.K. and Jenna who is down on her luck and spends a lot of her time volunteering at the ice rink .
A story of commitment , compassion and community , well written story lines weaving in other characters that left me wanting more - a great way to gear up to the next book 📚 It was funny , serious emotional and spicy .
A good solid 5 ⭐️read add it to your list it does not disappoint , thank you for this opportunity Alys !
Ryan and Jenna are perfection. There’s no unnecessary drama or pressure, they communicate well and focus on each others wants and needs. There’s flirty and fun banter, spicy scenes and lots of fun side characters to keep the story moving along. Its well paced, well balanced and gives you insight into the main characters which helps you fall in love with them as they fall for each other.
Thank you @alysjclarke for an amazing debut story and for the advanced e-copy. So excited to read it and even more excited for future books so we can hear more from these amazing characters.
First off I want to be transparent and state that I received an ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I honestly don’t know where to start, I loved the book. I found the characters relatable and the author managed to make you love and hate the characters so easily (fuck you Nathan)
I personally found the author perfectly hit the sweet spot of describing all of the scenes in enough detail that I could picture it in my head but she didn’t go into so much detail that there was no flexibility in my interpretation.
I only have one complaint which is that book 2 is not out yet so I have to wait (im)patiently for that to be released 😂
THIS BOOK! 😱 In all that is hockey romance.. Alys has well and truly perfected the art.. Ryan and Jenna are like 2 magnets, he falls hard and fast whilst Jenna is trying to figure not only herself out but him too.. the book shop, the date.. they seem to find this space where friends isn’t enough.. they need more and by Jesus did they get it! This book was the perfect blend of spicy and sweet! Truly beautiful in every way! The other characters are perfectly placed throughout the story to really get the feel of what’s happening all around.. Vicky and Liam 👀 I can’t wait to see what book 2 brings because my god.. THE CLIFF HANGER!! Seriously.. get this on release day! I was so lucky to be an ARC reader because this has set the bar high! British ice hockey.. written by a hockey fan herself.. can’t get better than that! 😝🤍
He only has to stick it out for one season. How hard can that be?
Ryan Preston is all set to sign a new contract to start his 8th year in the NHL. That is until Liam asks him to play a season in the UK in his place. Ryan can’t refuse his twin brother this ultimate favour, if he does then Liam will lose his chance to play in the big league. Ryan will be back home in Canada before he knows it. No big deal, right?
I’ve always said no hockey players…
Jenna Roberts has had hockey in her life since she could remember. Her city team has her best friend playing for them and the junior team has her uncle coaching them. Jenna’s no stranger to hockey players and their off ice habits. Newly single, on the hunt for a new job and moving back to her parents house. Jenna is officially done with life-more specifically her dating life. Especially after a series of failed dating attempts.
Ryan and Jenna aren’t looking to get into anything, both having their minds on other things. However as they spend more and more time together, can their agreement to stay “just friends” last?
Firstly I’ve been so honoured to be chosen as an ARC reader for this amazing book. I’ve honestly been so hyped for this book since I seen that it was a friends to lovers hockey romance. Friends to lovers is my favourite trope in contemporary romance. But with each social media teaser on instagram and booktok I got more and more invested. Once I read the book I was hooked! I can’t wait until book 2 of the series, which Alys sets up really well in The Import Slot.
I am such a big fan of how they both are immediately infatuated with each other but more so on Ryan’s side, who upon spotting Jenna first and becomes obsessed (in the best way). Making any excuse to see her or to be in her company and that’s while they’re in their friend stage. A lot of time when the protagonist get together so quick there’s a third act breakup but with The Import Slot there isn’t, which is so refreshing. That’s not too mean there isn’t any angst for those who love it. The book contains enough angst to keep us readers on our toes.
And let me tell you Alys J Clarke delivers on her promise of spicy action 🥵. My favourite of all is in chapter 29. Honestly you’ll know when you read it. If you read the book for any reason read it for this scene alone 😳😉🍑
The Import Slot is available right now in paperback and releases tomorrow in kindle and kindle unlimited. Don’t miss out!
I was lucky to have the opportunity of an early ARC copy of this book an OMG I loved it all.
I loved the way Ryan didn’t know he need Jenna and vice versa, they way they fought to just be friends to start with but once the line of just friends was crossed there was no going back. An it was so cute how they lusted after each other throughout the whole book.
The pact that Ryan and Liam have for fulfilling any bets is a nice touch, how they have such a good bond.
I loved the cliffhanger of the thought of them all playing together on the same team.
Then in the bonus scene of Liam and Vicky over the Christmas period. first gave me hope they were going to make another go things. But then they were found by Ryan and Jenna. It was sad when Liam said that they had to have a serious talk and said he was done breaking Vicky's heart this.
I love the idea of books following on with some of the other main team players and their stories that would be great.
I'm not sure how many books you planned to the series but sign me up now and take my money as they will all be bought and added to my physical bookshelves.
I truly loved every part of this book. Thank you for letting me be a very small part of your journey. You’ve smashed this and I can’t wait to see this blow up for everyone to love as much as I have!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Honestly I don't really know where to start with this book, it feels so personal to me since I've been fortunate enough to be a small part of Alys' journey with it.
Ryan has been on the NHL for years but after agreeing to a bet with his twin brother is now en route to England for a season. Jenna is a massive hockey fan but swears to never date one but then she meets one very charming Canadian and suddenly that rule seems harder to follow.
Jenna and Ryan's relationship was just so cute for day one, I just wanted to be a part of their whole group. My favourite sort of books are the ones where not only do you fall for the main characters but you become emotionally attached to everyone else and that's me here and I need more.
If you're looking for an easy read, UK based Hockey romance with characters you can't help but gravitate towards then this is absolutely the story for you.
I need book 2, book 3 and book 50 if that's a thing, I just want to be in this happy world forever.
Ryan Preston is a Canadian that has played seven seasons in the NHL, but is now heading to the UK to fill the team’s last import slot. Jenna Roberts has been around hockey her entire life, so she knows what hockey players are like. Ryan doesn’t date, and Jenna refuses to date hockey players, so surely they can just be friends, right?
I really enjoyed this book! This was my first hockey romance and it was so cute. There was no third act breakup, which I was thankful for. There was a little drama in this book, but whenever it did pop up it seemed to be resolved quickly. Honestly I could have done with a little more drama, but at the same time, it was refreshing to have a couple that didn’t have any major obstacles to overcome to be/stay together.
Both main characters are likable and you definitely find yourself rooting for them. It was love at first sight and things escalate pretty quickly after they meet. They communicate well and focus on each others wants and needs. Their banter is fun and flirty and they have some spicy bedroom (and equipment room 🤪) scenes 🌶️🤌🏻
This was my first ARC and I really enjoyed it! I’m definitely looking forward to more books with these characters! Thanks so much to Alys J. Clarke for providing me with this ARC and PR package!
I had the great pleasure of receiving an ARC copy of the Import Slot.
This book is set in the UK and a Hockey Romance.
Ryan and Jenna have an amazing connection and it's amazing to see them both develop individually and together in this book. Their friendship group was a beautiful blend and showed throughout the book.
There's a surprise visit from a certain someone in Ryan's life that makes for book 2 and it will be amazing to read.
There is no third act break up which was really nice, it has the right amount of angst throughout.
I had so many laughs when reading this as some of the scene mentions things that are relevant in my life.
If you are looking for a hockey romance. I highly recommend this one.
Wow, just wow. I have never read a book so quickly, I enjoyed the story from beginning to end. The characters were relatable and easy to fall in love with.
The story follows Ryan, a Canadian Ice Hockey player who moves to the UK for one season, and Jenna, who supports the local Ice Hockey team. Two people connected through their love for the sport.
I couldn't put this book down. I was up until 2 am. my first night, simply because I didn't realise the time as I was so engrossed and was enjoying it so much!
Please, if you do anything for yourself this year, pick up this book and immerse yourself with this amazing story.
EDIT: Re-read this ahead of book two coming out at the end of the month and fell in love even more 😍
This is my first ice hockey genre reading and I have to say I really enjoyed it and will be on the prowl for more.
I was lucky to be picked to be an ARC reader for this debut novel and was abit apprehensive as my normal read are thrillers but boy I was not disappointed. I am not going to put up any spoilers as dont want to ruin it for anyone. But I loved the build up to the relationship between Ryan and Jenna and how it grows and the overall decision that Ryan has to make about his career. I also liked the backstory of Liam and Vicky and I cannot wait to see how all that works out in the next book.
I do recommend this book and I hope that anyone who does read it really enjoys it as much as I did. Now I'm just eagerly awaiting book 2
If you like a love at first sight and hockey then this might be for you! There is definite spice through the book and lots of swoony moments! This is one of the cutest hockey romances BUT....if you don't like a book with no huge 3rd act breakup you may NOT like it! I do love a big grand groveling in a book but every so often it is nice to have a book with no major obstacles they have to jump over..so if you need a book that will just warm you up and make you fall in love even more with hockey then this is for you! The author was very knowledgeable about hockey and it was an amazing read with very little grammatical errors.
I really enjoyed this book! I’ve been in a bad slump and this book pulled me out of it more intensely than I want Ryan to pull my hair. I read the majority of this while at a ridiculously long appointment and it required so much restraint to not squeal or kick my feet.
I knew to expect spice and honestly, I wasn’t expecting super high quality spice, but it didn’t feel like debut novel level of spice to me! It was so well written and balanced with the plot in a believable way.
It is “insta-love”, but both main characters seemed to be unsure of what they were experiencing at first and had to explore their feelings (emotionally and physically). It still felt like their attraction to each other grew over time, so it honestly didn’t feel super unrealistic to me. There is no third-act breakup and no miscommunication, but there is some tension regarding an omission.
Jenna felt so relatable, and I adored her. I was able to keep up with who all the side characters were and let’s just say I have some potentially hot takes about a few of them. It was refreshing to get insight into what the other characters were going through – I love when friends remain relevant characters in romance novels instead of just disappearing as soon as sparks fly.
I do still have some questions, but that’s what sequels are for!
I would also just like to take a moment of silence for the fact that Ryan Preston is not my boyfriend. If anyone finds a man like him out in the wild, I am willing to trade a kidney for a chance with him.
Thank you to Alys J Clark for the ARC copy in exchange for my honest review.
My heart 🥰🥰 literally in love with this and so glad I enter my hockey romance era back in December 2022. Ryan and Jenna are amazing and their communication is top tier. They’re chemistry - off the charts and the spice - I was blushing. I loved everything about this. The banter between them and everyone else is giving me all the serotonin I’m lacking. Not to say there wasn’t a little angst in there, I was stressed for a few hot minutes but like every book I’ve read, it ended happy and with a bit of a cliff hanger. I can’t wait to for next book and learn more about Liam and Vicky. I just know my heart is gonna go through it in the best of ways!
I don't even know where to start with this book. First off, I received this as an ARC from the author, and I am so happy I was given the opportunity to be one of the first to read it! Jenna and Ryan are relationship goals! I loved the cute insta love that happened in this book. Their chemistry was perfect, and the two of them made me giddy with happiness. Next, I am from Canada. I was raised in British Columbia, and my dad and stepmom live in Abbotsford (Abby). I was overjoyed about this. My dad's favorite team is the Vancouver Canucks. I felt a deeper connection to this book because of that. This book is special, and it is heart-warming. It has the perfect amount of heart-pounding spicy moments and the perfect amount of sweet, loving moments. I would give anything to be able to re-read this book for the first time. I loved the Import Slot from page 1, and I 100 % recommend this book to everyone who loves romance or hockey romance. I can't wait to read Liam and Vicky's story!!
Arc review First, let me congratulate you on your book debut! I’m so happy for you! Thank you for allowing me to ARC. I stayed up super late enjoying every minute of this read! This was such an easy, light-weight read for me— a welcome difference from my usual anxiety ridden reads. I really enjoyed how mature the main characters were and how they respected one another. I loved the example of how a healthy relationship should be. I also enjoyed learning about UK hockey. I’m going to have to catch a game sometime! I am looking forward to the rest of the series; I have no doubt will be a hit! 🖤
I absolutely devoured this book in less than 24 hours! From the start I was swooning over the MMC Ryan, who takes an import slot contract in the UK as a favor to his brother Liam. I loved all of the characters and how each one had such different personalities that it was extremely easy to keep up with who was who. The MCs were so easy to connect with as well, they weren’t overly complicated which I love. You get to see them grow as individuals and as a couple. The entire story, from character background, to hockey, to love, and to spice was so balanced that I just flew through it in no time.
The spice in this book was phenomenal! There wasn’t too much but there also wasn’t too little. It was the perfect mix between plot and spice! I would say on a spice level it’s 3.5/5.
I absolutely cannot wait for the next book to come out!
I received an ARC for this book for an honest voluntary review.
This book was absolutely adorable. Jenna and Ryan had such a cute story. I enjoyed seeing how both characters developed throughout the story and changed together.
This story will forever be a new comfort read for me. The romance aspect was so cute! There was some spice throughout the book. I would say it's 3.5/5 for spice level and 5/5 for the cute romance. Along with that there are a bunch of moments that are found-family like that made my heart feel full.
I felt connected to each and every character and am super excited to continue to stay within this world with these characters for book 2.
*Honest ARC review* This book was so so good! I was hooked and couldn’t stop reading! Idk what it is about a hockey romance but I love them and this one did not disappoint! I absolutely adore Ryan and Jenna together! This books got: *he sees her first and falls hard *they try to be “just friends” but that never works *no third act breakup *it’s set in the UK *lots of hockey *spice (the bus scene wooo 🥵) This book was such a good read and so easy to get sucked into! I loved all the flirting going on and giggled out loud and some parts! Highly recommend if you’re in your hockey romance era like I am! This comes out at the end of Sept so be on the lookout and add it to your tbr!
Well this most definitely pulled me out of my reading slump! This was such a fun and easy book to read with the added bonus of lots of spice 🌶️🌶️ Really enjoyed & will definitely be looking forward to book number 2!
Loved this book so much, I didn't put it down and ended up reading until 2am to finish it. It's a perfect example of a romance book that has a realistic relationship but still keeps you hooked. And no third act break up or massive miscommunications! So excited to see what happens between the next couple in book two because the tension between those two is unreal!! This is definitely a book for hockey lovers, and you can tell the authors love for the sport from all the detail that has gone into it 🤍
