2.5 stars. I didn’t care for this at all. It’s just a very mean-spirited body horror, with nothing else beyond the vulgar dialogue, nonstop sexual assault, and mutilation. The characters have almost no development, and the premise offers nothing new or innovative. Just a serial killer going house to house to kill people for no reason, other than him being psychotic. No background, no anything. And the character arcs for Tully and Lauren were weak and confusing, at best. There is also a ton of repeat dialogue and verbiage throughout, too. I think the beginning was a really good start, but it all quickly devolved into a very unnecessary story.

This was a super disappointing read for me since I really enjoyed Mique’s debut novel, “Them”. Unfortunately, “Broken Dolls” didn’t hit for me in the same way as his previous release.
There was very little plot aside from the torture and debasement of the entire cast of characters, excluding only our main villain. If there was stellar character development driving the story, I really wouldn’t have an issue with this. However, I feel like I didn’t get to know any of the characters in a meaningful way. Overall, this made the novella feel very one note.
Additionally, one of the main features I enjoyed in “Them” was the meaningful commentary, and there was almost none that I could gather from this story. Books are obviously allowed to be “just for fun” and don’t always have to have something to say, but that’s just what I prefer to read. I also think if there was some kind of commentary, it may have helped me to align with the characters a bit more. But again, this is just personal preference at the end of the day.
I did thoroughly enjoy Mique’s descriptive writing and the passion he has for crafting gorey scenes really shines here. There is no doubt that he is a talented writer and has a gift for creating visuals, whether those visuals are beautiful or twisted.
I do want to note that I wasn’t the biggest fan of the content in this book. The abuse described was mainly directed at a very young minor and it made me exceedingly uncomfortable throughout, which Mique might argue was the point (valid!) but it was not for me (which is also valid!).
Lastly, the misogyny in this book was also horrifying to me… and I’m not sure that this was an intentional part of the horror created by the novel. It seemed like it stemmed from a lack of awareness and insensitivity towards the female characters, rather than a carefully crafted literary device. This is something I see a lot from male-identifying authors, particularly in the extreme horror community. I hope to see this start to shift sometime soon, but I’m not holding my breath.

Where do I begin!?! If you’re looking for a bleak, depressing, and terrifying book then look no further.
We are following our main character who lives alone with her pre-teen daughter. She is very cautious about the men she lets into her life until one day there is a knock at the door.
This is a home invasion extreme horror focusing on one question- how far is this mom willing to go for her child?
This book had me up at 1am SWEATING and GAGGING. This is EXTREME EXTREME horror involving children so please be aware of that. This is not for the faint of heart.
Mique’s writing is so beautiful and I can’t get over the way he makes you care for the characters, sets up the plot, and then rips your heart out from your chest in such a short amount of time. It’s rare for me to find extreme horror that I genuinely care enough about to let it effect me and this did the trick. This is definitely a book that will stick with me and I recommended it to any fan of extreme horror. SO WELL DONE!

With Broken Dolls, Mique Watson dares to go WAY beyond the "limits." This was such a brutal, depraved read, always keeping me wondering what boundary we were going to cross next—and always managing to surprise me. The characters were interesting, the pacing was relentless, and all of the mayhem was described in VIVID detail. Seriously, this one is for die-hard fans of the genre.

This book is trash. I rly do enjoy horror etc but this was a bad read. The lack of storyline and character depth, instead filled with awful violence, gore and worst of all child sa.
Then again, the dialogues were stupid and weird. Random admiring of how handsome and yadayadayada is the sick psychotic abuser. Yuck

Overall Thoughts:
First I wanna say how honored I feel that I got this arc from the author. Being able to read your work is not something I take lightly. I know how hard it is to put out a book. So thanks! I do review the books I read with 100% honesty.
Lauren tells her daughter that she doesn't bring her phone to the dinner table because she doesn't want to be distracted when they are eating dinner, but then when Bret has her phone it's just an old flip phone - curious what she would be distracted doing on a flip phone. There's nothing to do on them but call and text and she's mentioned how she's not close to anyone.
For me it's hard to read a book about a woman just opening up her door to 2 men she doesn't know at night and then letting them into her home. Not only that but then leaving her 12 year old daughter with them. This is where having a male author writing from a female pov comes into play that men can never understand that a woman would be too scared to do this. I live in the middle of the country and I would NEVER answer the door at night.
Lauren went pee right before coming outside but why wouldn't she change her pad? Almost implied that it's an old pad she's had for a while.
I didn't know that this book had sexual abuse of children. I do not like reading about kids being abused. It turns my stomach. I will say that the author did a great job of writing about some messed up things that happen. He definitely turned my stomach and wrote some horrorific stuff.
I feel like I've read this story so many times in extreme horror;
Killer shows up, demands people commits crimes on others, killer doesn't do anything to touch people, and killer leaves. In that sense it felt very predictable and it followed a certain pattern.
Lauren is the dumbest human alive. All the stuff she has went through and she still continues to think she's going to live. She even yells at Bret to clean up Tully because she might get an infection. Okay Lauren you are not just walking away from this!
Oh look the cheese grater showed up!Wondered when he was going to make an appearance. Always my favorite part of extreme horror. I love how something so simple can cause so much damage to a person.
Final Thoughts:
The ending was way too rushed. One minute Lauren is doing all these gory things and the next section her daughter is shooting her. Also the fact that the daughter would just side with this guy that told her mother to do these things is absurd.
Sadly there are zero surprises in this story. If you've read an extreme horror before than you'll guess the ending for this one.
I really enjoyed the first book that the author wrote. That book had a story where this one is just here. There really is no story to this book - just a man shows up and tortures them. The market of extreme horror is already over flowing with that. I know it's a take on Funny Games and that's what they do but I just think that the author has more talent than just straight only gore scenes. He knows how to spin a story that'll suck you in and great at describing characters in such a short amount of time.
He was able to turn the gore up to 1000% here so that's great.
I'm sorry this reminded me of Judith Sonnet's "No One Rides For Free. There's a bag of toys/goodies. The tone is just too similar.

Vile, brutal, disgusting, and merciless.
This little novella is a nightmare.
Oh, how I hated the villain. I could write an entire chapter decimating this inhumane creature—really. I think I felt more hate than disgust.
Honestly, I don’t get surprised by this kind of book anymore. Maybe I’m already desensitized because I've read too much of the genre these past few years? I couldn’t say. All I know is that these brutal scenes don’t make me flinch anymore. I think the last book that really made me go crazy like that was "Survivor" by J.F. Gonzalez. No book after that has taken the crown.
Still, this is something a sane person wouldn’t read.
Please beware.

after reading them by this same author i was highly looking foward to this book because i devoured them and it's most likely going to be on my favorites of the year. i cannot say the same for broken dolls. this one actually has a premise that is more up my alley because home invasions are one of my greatest fears.
i honestly find it very difficult to discuss this book so i'm going to start off positive. the writing in this is absoutely impeccable just like them. mique knows how to write and it shows. there were some slight errors but that doesn't really ever bother me.
now to me this story had no character development, no depth, no nuance which is the exact opposite of them. for me extreme horror needs those things or else it feels like torture porn for the sake of torture porn which is not why i read extreme horror. i read this genre to explore the darker sides of humanity which is a cathertic experience for me and don't get me wrong i love a gory, slasher, time but this didn't feel like that. this book made me feel actually icky and not in a fun way. i have never felt any shame around reading this genre and will openly talk about it with almost everybody in my life going into extreme detail but i honestly don't want to tell anybody the content i read in this because i feel shame. i've been starting to have conversation with others in the community who also read this genre about where lines should be and i'm not saying censorship or anything like that but what should be acceptable for the genre and this was crossing the line for me personally.

Home invasions scare the living shit out of me and when it’s just random? Even fucking worse! So why on earth would I want to read about one? Because I’m equal parts terrified and obsessed with stories like this.
It’s definitely a nod to Funny Games (one of my favorites ) but filled with gore, violence, and bodily fluids. SO MUCH.I’m serious, fluids everyfuckingwhere!!!

I don’t read extreme horror at all but I’m going to pick up this one, knowing it’s extreme horror & pretend that I had NO IDEA WHATSOEVER. Then I’m going to go rate/review it on booktok & be surprised that it’s too EXTREME for me. I’ll be especially shocked if it has blood, gore, or yucky gross sex stuff.

Anyhoo, onto this ACT OF BARBARITY in book form. I made it through, achievement unlocked. It’s an extreme horror, you have to know you’re willingly signing up for a brain beatdown one way or another. If you have trigger warnings, grab a bingo card cuz you’ll probably get a bingo. You’ll definitely score a win with Broken Dolls cuz whewww. 😮💨 All the triggers, all the body fluids, all the depravity. Depravity isn’t the word even, just WOW WHOA HUH EW BARF. That’s the review. Those 5 words.
Broken dolls was very well written, another plume in the jaunty cap of Mique Watson. He messed us up with “Them” and then fucked us up with this tale of home invasion going just about as wrong as humanly possible. He should both be very ashamed & very proud. I think it’s a huge talent for an author to make you feel for someone in ~100 pages, whether that’s fear, pity or utter hatred. Which he did, for all characters involved. Big “Funny Games” vibes, (hence the epigraph) “No One Rides for Free” vibes, and “The Strangers” as well. It was lightning fast, never let you catch your breath, which I can appreciate for the subject matter/it being a novella. I wish it had been bit longer, so some scenes could register deeper than they did. I can’t even say it was a joy to read, cuz I’d like to think of myself as somewhat sane. It was an experience nevertheless, which I will not soon forget. I have a feeling we will be hearing more about the survivors of this, and I would be excited to see how that will play out. Not anytime soon tho, I need time to give my brain a banana & sit outside for a while. 😐

Ok, where do I start with this one? Holy fucking shit this one was fucked the hell up! I genuinely almost DNF'd at one point, (I tapped out at 68% if you're curious 😉) because it was so wrong, so messed up, I didn't want to read about it, I didn't want that particular image burnt into my soul forever more. So, I put it to one side, took a hell of a deep breath, and an hour later I came back to it and finished it and I'm glad I did! If you've read Dead Inside by Chandler Morrison, you'll have some sort of idea of what I'm talking about here, and Dead Inside is now one of my most favourite extreme horror books ever! So….take a deep breath, a really deep breath…….its gonna need to be a lot deeper than that…….and off you go! Dive on in and "enjoy" the absolute depravity! Mique absolutely achieves what he set out to do in this book….shock, horrify, unnerve, appal, sicken and disgust you, but also there's an underlying tale of a mothers love and a daughter's betrayal.
(Oh, and you've been warned, so if you don't like it, if it's too much for you, don't go crying and taking it out on the author!)😂
A story of a home invasion gone so very horribly wrong and with the most barbaric and sickening twist!
Lauren finds herself alone with her 12 year old daughter Tully, after her husband leaves her. She feels shame at first, given her christian background, but it's given her and Tully the basis for a very close relationship, they're more like best friends, and they look out for each other! Lauren feels unworthy of love however, until she decides to be more forward with her neighbour, James, when he needs a bit of comfort. Unaware of just how brief that will be…
And when there's a knock on the door one night, and Bret and Cody appear unexpectedly, things change rather abruptly for her and her daughter. Bret just wants to play a game. A game where Lauren is no longer in control of what happens to her and her beloved daughter. Where she has to watch her innocence being taken from her, in the most humiliating and heartbreaking ways! And she is suddenly faced with just how utterly sick and twisted this guy really is! It also helps her to see her true self when faced with the sheer terror of an adversary, and what a warrior she can be when she has to do WHATEVER it takes!! The pure vitriol that rises in her when she's made to do the things she does is powerful stuff!
Bret is the most vile, abhorrent, sadistic, depraved excuse for a man, with absolutely no morals and no fucks to give! The despicable acts he forces on the women just keep getting worse and more shocking and diabolical the longer it goes on. You convince yourself there is no way things can get any worse, but youre so wrong! So wrong!
And when the intruder in YOUR home, your sanctuary, makes you do these things, that make you feel like you're worse than they are, more nasty and evil than them, that's a lot to accept and ultimately causes you to snap, and things go way beyond sick games!! Lauren suffers the kind of attack you can only wish you DONT survive! Coming from a religious background, she sees herself going against everything she ever believed, and committing almost every sin going in just one, horrific night!
The epilogue is chilling, and the whole thing will engrave itself onto your brain for eternity! Debauchery and depravity abound in this nasty little tale. It's written well, with some very vivid descriptions. Like me, you will probably read the whole thing with a permanent grimace on your face. It IS a tough read, but it's a great read, if you look past all the shocking and vile parts, there's a reason and a story behind it and it will sit on my bookcase, proudly, next to Dead Inside!

I am speechless this was horrific to read and I actually read it. Someone actually write this. I am the worst human being to actually read this book. I hate the mother that invited that stranger into her house so much that I don't care that she died but what they did to the two kids I can't unsee it. Splatter punk genre is going to be hard for me to read because they love pedophilia.

Now I probably should've know what I was getting myself into based from the first book, but I don't think anything could've prepared me for the sheer level of depravity that was this one😳
Despite the unsettling subject matter, I find it challenging to withhold a 5-star rating no matter how vile it feels, because it accomplished exactly what an extreme horror should. The haunting imagery from its pages will undoubtedly remain etched in my psyche for a considerable time, but I must credit the author for delivering such a chilling experience.
The pacing of the book was incredibly swift, I devoured it all in one sitting. It also served as a compelling homage to one of my favorite movies, "Funny Games," which only added to its appeal.
The narrative explores just how far someone is willing to go or sacrifice for someone they care about, especially when pushed hard enough.
What made the impact even more profound was my strong connection to the characters. It made the subsequent unfolding of events more difficult to bear. Several times, I found myself on the verge of nausea, terrified for our protagonists and heart-wrenched by their predicament. In just 150 pages, the author skillfully elicited a wide range of emotions out of me. It immerses readers in a realm where no boundaries are held back, showcasing a visceral display of gore and violence only Mique can conjure up.
And lastly, I want to congratulate Mique for his second book and for revitalizing an extreme horror genre with that twisted mind of his we all love so much hh. Getting lost in the pages of this book provided a welcome escape from my own troubles, allowing me to immerse myself in a world of much more horrifying experiences instead, which is really all I'm ever looking for hah

The fact that this has less than an overall 3-star rating annoys me. If this didn’t involve a child, I know this would have received higher reviews. Lucky for you, I’m a heartless prick!
While I can delineate the difference between a fictional book and reality, Watson did a great job at creating terror and uncomfortableness. Also nausea, lots and lots of nausea.
Watson criticized some heavy social topics, but most notably there was a large commentary on religion, which I always appreciate. Lauren’s worst nightmare, and everything she believes in, is tested in this story. (While I disapprove of having children, I will assume every parent’s worst nightmare would be some of the things that occurred in this book.)

Okay so here’s the thing-
This is one of my first “splatter punk” books and I’m not so sure the whole thing is for me after this.
Well written vile and disgusting content.
I noted at the beginning of the book there is a “Funny Games” quote which made me excited as not many people have seen this, and it’s truly in a league of its own. My issue is that this book seems like fanfiction from that movie- but turned up a few notches and adding in gross sexual content involving persons under 18.
The villain was brilliantly written but it’s easy to see that it’s supposed to be a version of the male lead in Funny Games. To the point that I could hear some of the phrases being said and it drew a small chuckle from me.
Overall it made me gag and feel I comfortable. I had to skip over some parts because I couldn’t handle it. It overstepped my boundaries and personal triggers.

Lauren and Tully are getting ready to have a nice night in together when all of a sudden there's a knock on the door. There stand 2 young men and what Lauren doesn't know is how drastically her life is going to be after this.
Alright...I finally read it and I gotta say, I enjoyed it. After chapter 6, shit really starts to pop off. There is child SA and yes it's tough to read but I understand why it's there. I'm not saying it's right, to understand you have to read the book. It's a home invasion, in real life that shit would probably happen too. We as humans are awful beings so what's in this book is scary enough to happen in real life. The twist towards the end I enjoyed!
It's hard to talk about this book without sounding offensive. Overall though, I enjoyed the story. I have zero triggers and will read everything. If you choose to read this book then proceed with caution.

So this book is a beast of its own. I’m going to start this review with saying if you have a problem with child torture/SA run and don’t turn around. This book is filled to the brim with it.
The book was well written. It had a couple flaws. But overall it was good. Lauren escaped an abusive marriage and moved to the country with her daughter Tully. Even after being an abusive controlling marriage, Lauren is extremely too trusting.
She let in a random stranger and a small boy claiming to need to use a phone. Things go really dark from here. Like diving deep to the bottom of the darkness of the sea. The way things amplified and as quickly as they did was jarring.
Bret (the stranger) set me on edge instantly. I knew he had kidnapped Cody (the small boy) from the jump. I also figured he was going to be harmed. The mom Lauren is so stupid. Didn’t ask where the car was and even at one point started thinking of Bret sexually.
She even left her daughter alone in the kitchen with complete strangers while she found a jack and peed…so as a mom it made me angry. But what Bret made Lauren do to Cody and Tully makes me sick and is something unfortunately some sicko would do in real life. So this book does it’s intended job by horrifying the reader. But what I don’t understand is the ending.
Tully shooting her mother instead of Bret was beyond me. She did everything she did to protect Tully. It is implied in the end, that he cycles new kids with each house. So Tully won’t make it past the next house with little Jacob. Jacob will then become Bret’s newest plaything.
Me personally, I would love a spin off story of Bret and how and why he got into doing what he does.

the start of this was so good and i was really interested in seeing where it was gonna go but it quickly turned into a story of nothing but very graphic descriptions of torture. i'm not rating this low due to the violence because that is what extreme horror consists of, i'm rating it low due to lack of storyline. there was not much backstory from our main characters and absolutely no backstory from the bad guy. no motive was ever revealed. i don't really understand why james was introduced as a character at all. also i hate the mother almost as much as the villain in this story solely bc of her stupidity. that is all.
OH i did chuckle at the gypsy rose comment. that was funny.

WHY THE FUCK DO I KEEP DOING THIS TO MYSELF😭😭 I swear to you I read the description of this book and it was not what I expected. This is turning into a pattern and I DON’T LIKE IT. Why when authors think of writing an extreme horror book they think of the rape and abuse of children. This has been a consistent factor in the extreme horror books I’ve read and I need it to stop. PLEASE.
There is so many problems that I have with this book. The first thing is why does the 12 year old sound like a 30 year old woman?!?!! That threw me off a lot. The random reference to titans (2018) just confused me because what 12 year old would want to watch that. And isn’t there nudity in titans⁉️ would Lauren even let her watch it or would she just describe how handsome and young the men characters are if they did watch it🙄. INCONSISTENT! The use of James and Cody felt so… I don’t even know the word, but their only function was to gain sympathy from the readers because we all know nobody felt bad for Lauren’s no common sense having ass.
THEN I happen to look up the author and I realized I watched one of his video review on “Hub” by MATT FUCKING SHAW. So this whole thing makes sense🫠. I think the writing in this book is very…awkward. ALSO, why did Lauren keep telling us that these men were attractive. Girl?!? Like in the middle of Bret forcing her to do something, shes like he’s so young and handsome (paraphrasing). Oh and I just remembered to ask, why the fuck are the characters so STUPID, like this woman has no common sense. She goes upstairs and leaves her 12 year old daughter with 2 strangers and has the audacity to look in the fucking mirror and try to fix herself up. I’m done. Wait no I’m not because what was that ending of Tully shooting her mom🤨. Like did she forget he made her mom do all that stuff?!?! And also made her do stuff??!?!!! Like she really said fuck all the shit he put US through but you killed a little boy, girl get on somewhere😑. The ending just felt so rushed and disappointing. Kind of expected that ending and epilogue which wasn’t even the nail in the coffin for me, the coffin was already in the ground.
The age shaming, slut shaming, f word and r word being thrown around…it felt unnecessary and useless to put in. Very redundant and repetitive. the misogyny in this book was expected I guess. A lot of male authors in the extreme horror community write like this and it’s problematic to be frank. It’s kind of like a cheap and lazy way of writing female characters and is very cliché. I’ve read too many extreme horror books to keep seeing the same shit. Also, the anal things with the poop and blood was just too much. After the third time I was like can he just kill them please I’m tired. I need to read a different genre after this I can’t keep doing this.
Positives: It easy to read, the cover looks nice (that’s it)
Negatives: the incest, child sa, the weird anal stuff(why is no one talking about it.), the disgusting descriptions( the cheese grater had my stomach churning all over again), the house, CHILD SA and rape, the mood wasn’t consistent, it wasn’t funny just cringy (like at least give me a little haha moment or something), it takes itself to seriously, the use of slurs in this book feels the same as in “Woom” where the n word was used. February 8, 2025I hated every bit of this book. And I need to give my eyes a bleach bath.
I enjoy extreme horror/splatterpunk that has more than just shock-value... Yes, I'm all for pushing boundaries, but I feel like anyone can write explicit, fucked up, disturbing scenes. Some of us are looking for more than that. I prefer books that actually take creative effort to develop a plot, background, storyline, SOMETHING, ANYTHING. This has none of that.
The creativity is heavily lacking, just a typical torture-happy serial killer. No twist, no connections, no development... just a killer mutilating, torturing, and killing. There is nothing happening other than continuous torture (mostly on children) and different "threats" that vary in wording but always mean the same thing. The entire book. That's all. There is almost no information at all about the characters (besides Lauren's bad sex life with her ex-husband- and why would this be her constant thought process?) We have no history or reference about our bad guy, either. What makes him do what he does? One sentence about his mother not loving him enough is literally all we've got.
The language and scenes were also incredibly repetitive, and I'm pretty sure the word "cunt" was used a thousand times. Same dialogue, same overuse of phrases, etc.
I was seriously let down by this book, as I saw it recommended everywhere. Maybe the follow up is better? Yeah no, I don't think I want to risk it with how shit this one was. The best part of this book was the blank page at the end.

No One Rides For Free by Judith Sonnet might as well be this book's twin. Two single moms being horny and not paying attention, two deranged men just wanting to "have fun" with a bag of sex toys covered in dried shit and fluid, two daughters being ass raped, two males being ass penetrated by objects, two dumbass moms not being mom-like at all... literally the same book with different backgrounds. Both sucked.

Saw this book posted on Reddit as a new release alert and jumped on it due to the synopses. I immediately downloaded it from KU, and made it my next read. Man I was disappointed. I’m a big fan of extreme horror, but this just was not good.
The premise was cool albeit nothing new, but the story felt like the author watched Funny Games while reading No One Rides for Free then made a low effort attempt at emulating them in one story.
The story was very predictable and repetitive:
- Bad Guy: “Do this.”
- Victim: “No I can’t do that.”
- Bad Guy: “Do this or I’ll kill your daughter.”
- Victim: “Ok I’ll do it.”
Repeat Ad Nauseam. If the book had been any longer, I likely would have DNF, by the end I was skimming pages because I only had less than 30 minutes to go.
The ending can be seen from a mile away.
I’m not grammar/editing police and can usually look past the one off spelling error or grammatical mistake, but I do think that people who are going to publish books, should at least make an attempt at editing or have it looked over by an editor. People provide their editing services for a fair price on fiverr.
I’ll end it here because I feel like if I continue people are going to think that I’m just unnecessarily bashing the author or the book and that isn’t the case.

I enjoyed concept and the book definitely delivers on the Extreme, but did find it too repetitive. Will definitely check out more of Mique in the futute though as there's a lot of good writing at the start of the book.
