"Gotta catch 'em all!"

To be honest, when I had the Game Boy/DS games, I never actually did; part of that was because I never traded with anyone, except for one time where a glitch caused my trading partner to lose his best fighter. I'll never forget how upsetting that was...for both of us.

Still, I enjoy the manga based on those games, and this was a fun one; I'm excited to see the matchup between the Kanto and Johto gym leaders.

I fully admit, I'm not completely sure what's happening.

My mistake for starting with [a] book TWELVE in the series, you'd think? Not really—the overall story of the books I've read to date (most of which were prior to signing on with Goodreads, so no evidence of which and when) have exactly this same formula:

- Main Character(s) will and/or have been out to explore some new area
- AND FIND NEW POKéMANS*
occasionally:
- said new Pokémans will be a LEGENDARY (see: Mew [if I recall correctly]) but will act in a bizarre manner, like it's evasive or being controlled
- scene switches to another character/group, who PROBABLY IS DOING THE EXACT SAME THING

I might be a little hyperbolic about that, but honestly... a lot of this volume felt familiar, even though I know for certain I haven't read it before today, because a very lot of the volumes I *have* read are the same sort of "NEW POKéMON LET'S GET IT" stories, over and over. For good reason!

The biggest problem is trying to remember all the characters involved, since they feel so interchangeable, like they're just retreading the same story but switching out who's in it. Gold feels like a palette swap of Red (even though Red is shown [but doesn't TECHNICALLY appear] in this volume), Silver is a swap of Blue, Crystal is a swap of Green, etc. The only main characters that differed significantly in mind were X and Y, because 1. their names are PARTICULARLY terrible (X-ey and Y-ey as nicknames—yuck) and 2. X was a depressive shut-in, in direct contrast to the kind of characters who usually get featured in younger reader media.

...this is drifting away from my main point, I think.

Anyway, this volume has Gold/Silver/Crystal/Misty/Brock/etc./whoever looking for FIVE different Legendaries, which feels particularly unfocused, since each group encounters a different one, and the story changes PER GROUP, so there's even less focus for a complete newcomer (or an incomplete newcomer, as it were). It feels like I'm not reading the same story, but it still feels coherent somehow. Does that make sense? I can't follow the larger plot as well, but I can definitely follow the fact they have monster fights.

Why read, then? Well, mostly because this book was almost exactly the maximum price allowed for the free book punchcard redemption at the local used bookstore, so why not? Also, the art is super cute.

...

Well, most of it. I can't really parse what's going on with this Pikachu, and it's bothering me a LOT:

Pikachu stuck(?) in a rock that opens into a secret dimension(?)

No, it doesn't make much more sense in context.

On the whole, not a bad read, but probably better when read in proper sequence with the other books, at least within this sub-series. Can't vouch for that, though, since this is the first one I've read from it.

*sorry, I don't feel like looking up the capital version of é, though I know the escape code by heart for the lowercase FOR SOME REASON

As though I didn’t have enough reasons to dislike Gold already, sure, let’s add ‘sexist’ to the list. Perfect.

On the one hand, I think it’s cool that this series has a fairly large cast and is doing its best to make use of it all - all of the Kanto gym leaders, the support team for our core trainers, and the central “color” cast. But it just… doesn’t do it that well. It doesn’t give enough of each character to make their dramatic moments feel earned, and I just struggle to understand the purpose of giving, say, Misty an admittedly cool, huge moment aside from plot reasons.

All that said… Tournament Arc! They’re not gonna mess that up, at least, right? Right?

2/5 - Right?

P.S. Pryce’s… ‘ability’ or whatever you want to call it is just so incredibly far beyond what anyone else has displayed in this universe in terms of power and versatility, it’s mind-boggling. Like, really? Really?

Nice to see Lugia and while Gold does come back most of the story is focused on the Gym Leaders which I find kind of odd but still it was nice to learn a lot more about the gym leaders like their roles and how to become a gym leader. Also nice to see the gym leaders act off each other and interact with their own pokemon which I wish we would see more of just seeing trainers interact with their own pokemon but most of the time the pokemon just show up for battles but we never get to see them much in calmer moments of the manga.

So we have a plot! Kind of! Crystal finds Gold and Silver, they confront Lugia and have yet another mystery on their friends. Suicune finds an unlikely ally to be his trainer and the mystery of the Legendary Cats is finally given a bit of light. The gym leaders from Kanto and Johto all come together to the Indigo Plateau for a showdown but it's all allegedly to draw out the Masked Man.

Two more volumes to go. >_>

4 estrellas.

I'm so fired up to learn the great finale of the Gold, Silver, Crystal Arc! :)
The story is so different from what I have experienced in the game that I have no clue what can happen next. There are so many twists and turns that I'm impressed after each page I turn.
Let's see what volume 13 has to offer.

1. I love how everyone avoids pronouns when talking about Yellow
2. this volume ended on a cliffhanger but which of the gym leaders could possibly be the man with the ICE mask, probably not the ICE type gym leader that is def a bit suspect
3. Misty ily I didn’t appreciate you enough in Red, Blue, Green & Yellow

This book was super fun!! I enjoyed seeing Gold and Silver back so much, and them being together with Crystal- I'm so happy!! ^v^ Also seeing the gym leaders was fun to haha-- very enjoyable!

(This book contains fantasy violence as well as a girl bathing (nothing is shown) I would give it a rating of all-ages)

More good fun, as the plot moves along at a rapid pace in this book. Quite a few interweaving threads here but they mesh quite nicely. We see more of Gold and Silver again here, and Gold still somewhat precocious still but with the expanded range of characters here it isn't quite so annoying.

So Lugia has officially been revealed, Gold and Silver are back in play, and I'm like 90% sure I know who the Masked Man is. This also has one of the dopest endings to a volume in the series so far. This volume is in the upper echelon of the series.

Pokemon Adventures (Vol. 12):

Okay addition to the overall story. I find it hard to follow the plot lines and that this one left more questions than answers. Hoping that the last two editions wrap this up in a meaningful way. This has still be a fun journey through childhood nostalgia.

Gold and Silver are back in a big way -- and not only that, there's a secret evil lurking in the shadows, ready to pounce.
The story is only going to get better from here on, I can feel it.

Chrys is becoming one of my favorite characters along with Red, and Green. Yellow is also up there but Gold is a little sh*t and I really want Chrys to beat his a**.

Cuối cùng thì cả 3 nhân vật chính của phần truyện Gold - Silver - Crystal cũng đã gặp nhau. Tập này trận chiến với Lugia thật epic mà cú plot ở cuối truyện cũng gây nhiều bất ngờ.

This is definitely the best of the GSC books so far. It moves at a crazy-fast pace, the Suicine b-plot finally reaches its conclusion, and we’re ramping up to some genuinely great crossover stuff.
