Dinah McCall is a pseudonym for author Sharon Sala.

It was a job she hated that drove Sharon Sala to put the first page of paper in an old typewriter, but it was the love of the craft that kept her writing. Her first efforts at writing came in 1980 when she began a book that wound up under her bed. A second book followed in 1981 and suffered a similar fate, but she claims the writing bug had bitten hard. However, she let life and the demands of a growing family delay her from continuing until a tragedy struck.

Her father died in May of 1985 after a lingering illness, and then, only two months later, her only sister died unexpectedly. She vowed then and there that she was not going to wind up on her deathbed one day with regrets for not following through on her dreams.

She joined writers' groups and attended conferences, and she slowly learned her way around the written page. By 1989, she decided she had come far enough in her writing to attempt another try at book-length fiction and began a book that would later be entitled Sara's Angel. As fate would have it, the first publisher she sent it to bought it, and she hasn't looked back.

As a farmer's daughter, and then for many years a farmer's wife, Sharon escaped the drudgeries of life through the pages of books, and now, as a writer, she finds herself often living out her dreams. Through traveling and speaking and the countless thousands of fan letters she has received, Sharon has touched many lives. One faithful reader has crowned her the "Reba of Romance," while others claim she's a magician with words.

Her stories are often dark, dealing with the realities of this world, and yet she's able to weave hope and love within the words for the readers who clamor for her latest works.

Her books repeatedly make the bestseller lists, including those of The New York Times, USA TODAY, Publishers Weekly, and the Waldenbooks mass market fiction list, and she's been nominated for a RITA® Award seven times, which is the romance writer's equivalent of having an Oscar or an Emmy nomination.

Always an optimist in the face of bad times, she finds that many of the stories she writes come to her in dreams, but there's nothing fanciful about her work. She puts her faith in God and still trusts in love and the belief that, no matter what, everything comes full circle.

I always struggle with Sharon Sala/Dinah McCall. Some of her books I've enjoyed others I've not even finished, -all have a high cheese factor. This one had a great premise, a follow through that I wasn't expecting (and not in a good way) with main characters becoming secondary and an over the top maniacal bad guy. Some of the dialogue in this was also laughably old fashioned and or just plain ridiculous with love scenes the same. The following being almost unreadable.

"When they began the dance of love, time stopped. All sense of themselves as individuals became lost in the act of making love. The room stood in darkness but was tempered in warmth." *Gag*

She also had her heroine spout sexist comments like "I feel really terrible for being such a burden to everyone. I haven't lifted a finger to cook or clean since I entered the house."

The heroine has just survived a plane crash, spent days lost in the snowy wilderness being chased by the bad guy, had surgery to remove part of the plane from her back and, it’s not even her house! But hey, come on, she didn't cook or clean!

And then with about 50 pages to go, just when I thought I was going to make it to the end she killed the dog. Note to authors Don't Kill The Dog! They must know it infuriates and alienates readers, I threw the damn book. Outside. So anyways this was a DNF and I'm done with McCall/Sala.

Lately I look for stories that hook me and entertain me enough to overlook some slips. This story has more than met the requirements. I needed an escape from everyday life and it was handed to me on a silver plate, for which I am grateful. Which is not to say that it was perfect (by any means).

The synopsis tells us everything we need to know about the story. That there are certain supernatural elements, a plane crash, some survivors and a murderer who does not give up his efforts.
There are also 4 generations of O'Ryan men looking for the fifth generation (little Johnny). Already with this line the author makes it clear to us that the story is going to be, at the very least, excessive. And it will be in all its aspects:
The bad guy who will go on forever. No wild horses (o flying bullets) for this guy.
The good ones that are almost too perfect.
The survivors who survive despite everything (and when I say everything I mean EVERYTHING)
The romances (you wouldn't think there would be just one of them, do you?...) that are perfectly overly sweet.
And that Christmas background that is the great bow that wrap the story nicely.

So, If I had to choose a term to sum up this story that would be OTT. And yet I´ll give it a well-deserved four stars because it managed to amuse me, hooked me and made me forget where I was and how.
Ms. Sala must have done something well, the thing is I don´t remember what right now…

I had a hard time putting this down! This was the first Dinah McCall (or Sharon Sala) I’ve read, and I wouldn’t hesitate to read more. The rescue happens rather early in the story, so I wondered what else was going to happen. The weather didn’t disappoint.

My one complaint is that I found it hard to believe that the bad guy would survive as long as he did in the wilderness in bad weather, injured, with very little food and/or water. But I rarely read anything that doesn’t require at least a little suspension of disbelief.

Plans wreck

When a plane crashes in the mountains in Kentucky it sets in motion a series of events that keep you turning the pages almost faster than you can read them.
A woman and a young are running for their lives into the mountains with a mad man after them.
The O'Ryan's come in full force to help find the little boy that is part of their family.
I love this great adventure and the fabulous wither that wrote it. Thanks Dinah.

It was the Appalachian setting that first caught me attention and enticed me to place a hold at our library on this book and, it held my attention from page one till the very last page! Every descriptive word allowed me to visualize in my mind the setting and each and every person clearly. Very well written!

I was tempted to give this book 5 stars because I really enjoyed it, but there was a thing near the end that bugged me, along with a few other small details.

The big issue I had was how the antagonist died. I don't care that he died...he deserved it. It was the how. Mike shoots him as Wilson is on the run. The guy drops and is pretty much probably going to die within minutes. He's not doing anything but laying there dying, yet Mike goes up to him, puts the barrel of the gun at his chest, and pulls the trigger. WTF? If that happened in real-life, or a cop did that, there'd be outrage and probably charges filed. Sure the guy was evil, but to just go up and blow him away when he's already down for the count? It didn't work for me.

The other gripe I had was that McCall left out a lot of small background details that I really wanted to know. She tells you that Evan's wife died a few years ago, but never says how she died. Mike had two previous failed marriages, but you don't learn any more than that. I wanted to know these things! It gives the characters so much more depth.

But despite those things above, this was overall a good book. It was another one where I never paid attention to what page I was on because the story kept me hooked. I loved the characters and hated to see the book end. The romance is a bit on the quiet side, but it was sweet and more heart-warming than passionate.

Sala/McCall fans will probably enjoy this book.

I really liked this book. The only thing that kept it from being 5 stars is that the 2 romances or at least the main romance could have been a bit richer. I'm happy they fell in love, I just wish I could have read more and experienced more about it. I like all the generations of the men being together and supporting each other. I loved the pyschic aspect. I did wonder how the bad guy stayed alive while injured in the weather etc. After all, Molly and Johnny nearly died after only 2 nights. How did exposure not get him? Still all in all a good read.

Cliche ridden

Always a sucker for a “survival “ adventure, I soon found myself in a cliche-ridden romance novel, where two strangers are immediately drunk with each other. The plot of this story mirrors an old movie, “The Enchanted Cottage “ where a scared, bitter ex-soldier finds love with a plain Jane. Here, we throw in an orphaned boy, protected by a stewardess in a snow storm being pursued by a killer-politician. Oh, did I mention the “Jane” here has “second sight”?

now i am hooked. This was such a great, easy and creative book. i was hooked after the first page.

The characters were easy to fall in love with and follow, along with the story. the author made the mental visions so easy and vivid of the surroundings and the characters actions felt so real.

i would highly recommend this author and this book.

Molly is hoping for a quiet flight home when her sleep is interrupted by two men in front of her arguing. She tries to ignore them, but finds it difficult. Suddenly, their plane crashes and almost everyone is dead, but Molly witnesses one of the men who had been arguing killing the other. She considers herself lucky when he leaves the plane, so she decides to escape, but while she is leaving, she finds a young boy named Johnny O'Ryan in the seat next to hers trying to wake up his grandparents who were obviously killed in the crash. When the boy asks her if the bad man killed his grandparents too, she knows that he also witnessed the murder. Although injured, they both escape into the woods before the bad man can come back and finish them off.
Deborah has had the gift since she was a child, but it has left her unable to maintain relationships, so she lives a solitary life in the mountains. When she sees a vision of the plane crash, she knows she has to help, so she makes her way to the crash site where she offers to help find the survivors. Four generations of O'Ryan men are skeptical, but will take any help they can get to find Johnny.
The Survivors is an emotional story about love, loss, and redemption. The protagonist throughout the first half of the story is Molly, but Deborah gradually takes that role as the story moves forward. There are many instances in this story where it is necessary to suspend disbelief, but overall it is a gentle romance with some suspense layered into the story that makes it more interesting and worth the read.

A great premise is quickly wasted in The Survivors. This could have been a creepy and thrilling book but once the survivors are discovered about half way through it devolves quickly into a run of the mill romance novels. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone except those that enjoy a pure romance novel.

Paeluvalt ja põnevalt algav raamat. Põgenemised elu eest on ju alati põnevad.
Alustuseks kaanekujundus. Raamatu tegevus toimub külmal ja tormisel talvel. Mida me näeme aga kaanel? Lehtes puid! Aga ikkagi, miks peavad alati just loomad surema... niuks.

Keeper

Must read his book. I have read this book at least 50 times. Each time I read it I find something I missed before. I worked at a convenience store. A flight attendant came in looking for books, she had an unexpected 6 hour layover and had nothing to read. We had none so I loaned her this book. Six months later she returned it apologize for taking so long. She enjoyed it so much that the entire flight crew borrowed it to read. She said she had ordered a copy for her own collection. It's that good. If you like this book try her book Tallchief, it's a keeper too.

I went searching at our local second hand book store to find more of this author. and i was so lucky to find another of her novels. This novel was just a little slower in the beginning from the other novels of hers that i read. But it quickly picked up and kept me wanting more.

Teetering on 3 and 3.5. It honestly wasn’t very good but it was very readable and entertaining. The romance was not great and honestly this probably would’ve been better if it stayed a mystery. Both romance subplots just seemed to...happen. With very little actual lead up or real connection.

That seems to be a really hard a balance to strike with romantic suspense and I keep trying to find one that does both the romance and suspense aspects well. I guess I’ll keep looking.

After finishing this book, I felt an overwhelming amount of feelings—happy and sad ones. Although, it took me a while to finish this, I would guess about 6 days.

I don't think I would recommended this to anyone who prefers a no romance read (referring to myself). I was quite disappointed when the the story started pivoting in a romantic narrative. But overall it's a good book, definitely played with my feelings.

Deborah Sanborn, psychic, sees a woman and boy heading away from a plane crash and a man pursuing them. She heads to the crash site and meets up with the boy’s family. Despite their disbelief they follow her into the snowy mountains to search for them. The story is a good thriller with some fantasy overtones and a couple of romances thrown in.

At first this book bounced around a bit too much for me and the E version was difficult to follow with no spacing between one paragraph and another but the last 4 chapters were thrilling.

A compelling story, but I didn’t see how anyone could survive freezing temperatures for days on end.

Other than that, it was a page-turner.

My condolences to the author on the loss of her fiancé. So tragic.
