This one is based on the movie of the same name. Not having seen the video, one of the few I haven't, I cannot compare the two. The book stands well on it's own. There is a werewolf terrorizing the circus and stealing gems. The latter is of course unusual behaviour for a loup garou. Of course Mystery Inc. gets involved and all is well, after the usual scary moments for Scooby and Shaggy. If you have someone in your household who is a Scooby-Doo fan they should enjoy this one.

Oh, Scooby Doo! This is another typical Scooby book - kids really love it, Scooby's dialogue makes it fun to read, the strange & eerie mystery is slowly unravelled to make everything make sense. At least, it kind of makes sense.. Brendan somehow came away from tonight's reading with this declaration: "I get it now! Werewolves USED TO exist, like hundreds of years ago. They just all became extinct."
This Scooby is a more simpler reader than the others seemed to be. So your beginning reader could possibly read this with help. Since I haven't watched the movie I can't say if it goes hand in hand with the movie but there are some things 'missing' as you read it. (The story is choppy) But it's not on the scary side as my nearly 4 year old granddaughter wasn't scared as she sometimes is with the other Scooby Doo books.
My kids were definitely too young for this one though it was in the young children's section of the library. sped through the "tranquilizer darts" so my 4 year old wouldn't ask
