Since my kids and I enjoy the Batman Animated Series on Television back in the 1990s and also comic books based upon the 90s series, we started ordering kindle versions of Batman: Gotham Adventures issues. This is the third issue we read. For me the cover really got my attention for this one since it has Batman and the Grey Ghost. The Grey Ghost in the batman world is a TV cartoon superhero for kids. I like it because it resembles the Shadow, a pulp era superhero that I also like besides Batman. In this issue which feature a story called “Just Another Day” it begins with Robin hanging on a giant clock and Batman and Batgirl also on scene taking on bad guys. It then transition from the cliff hanger scene to another scene but now with a boy watching TV of the Gray Ghost at home in the living room and his mother telling him he has to do his homework. The boy is dressed up as the Grey Ghost and its revealed that Batman at one time saved this boy and has ever since been obsessed with the Batman. The boy has an active imagination daydreaming about Batman’s adventure even at school (and there’s challenges he has in school). When the mom takes the boy to the bank and Scarecrow with a crew of criminals came in to rob the Bank we see Batman’s team intervene. I don’t want to give it away the whole story but the boy would be critical in saving the day. I love this story that the boy turns out to be a hero of sort even as he is obsessed with Batman as the hero. I thought this was great! Also the scene of the boy watching episodes of the Grey Ghost and Batman makes me think about my own childhood watching Batman Animated feature on TV during the afternoon in the weekdays. I am glad something from my childhood is now something I get to enjoy with my kids in comic form through reading aloud this issue.
”Just Another Day” starts with Batgirl rescuing Robin off a clock tower (and teasing him about it) and Batman running after Red Claw. He catches her but she’s planted a bomb in the clock tower (they have a lot of those in Gotham) that will kill all of them in 30 seconds.
How come regular comics don’t start with this much action!
But it turns out that this was just a kid named Justin watching TV in his Grey Ghost costume. Grey Ghost videos and Batman episodes. His mom turns it off and tells him to do his homework. Witch!
The kid reminds mom that Batman caught the guy that robbed them a few years ago.
The kid goes to his room which is a bat-kid’s dream of toys, blankets, bat-lamp etc. He actually asks his Batman action figure how he stopped that bomb. Batman tells him.
Next day at school kids try to bully him into a gang. He has the Batman Family protect him.
He goes with his mom to the bank, but is bored waiting in line. Then Scarecrow robs the bank.
”Do you smell that, thick than the smoke…? The delicate tang of human panic.”
Batman and Robin come to the bank but Scarecrow uses his fear-cane to make everyone afraid of Batman, including Batman! Everyone cowers in fear of Batman. Batman himself goes fetal on the ground in fear!
This was a great, weird, meta story with a clever ending.
5 stars for fun. I like this series. I wonder why it got it’s own series?
A cute story involving a kid who looks up to Batman and gets to help him. It was cool how the text for Scarecrow's dialogue looked different and appropriately creepy.
A cute little story of Batman's impact on a boy he once saved, and how it comes back to help Batman in the end. Love the use of the Grey Ghost character.
