”Last Chance” by coincidence, this appears to be a Deadman story.
Haly’s Circus appears to be putting on a show with Flying Dick Grayson and Deadman together.
Deadman - apparently alive - is talking to Dick Grayson and thanking him for returning for a successful show. Boston Brand apparently owns Haly circus now.
Barbara Gordon visits Dick in Boston’s trailer. Worried about the stunts he might perform.
The fortune teller of the circus - Vashnu - warns Boston Brand to be careful tonight. The fates warned him. Boston only mocks.
Dick & Boston ascend to the trapeze rig. During the act Boston is shot! Dick goes to help him on the ground.
The gunshot scared the Elephants and Bruce, Barbara and Tim in the audience rush to help prevent people from being trampled.
Deadman is having trouble believing he is dead, but Rama Kushna in the form of Vashnu explains that he must find the one that killed him.
Detective Montoya shows up and speaks to Batman and Robin about the crime, saying that they watched all the exits and no one left with a rifle. Batman picks out a particular rifle from the circus’s shooting booth. Batman, Robin and Nightwing visit a local gunsmith who points them to the address he delivered the rifle to. Deadman follows the all the way, frustrated that he can’t communicate with them to tell him that the shooter was a guy with a hook for a hand.
Batman, Robin and Nightwing go to the address - Mammoth Studios - and find a bunch of gunman and Sensei from the League of Assassins. One of the gunmen has a hook for a hand.
While trying to get Batman to dodge a bullet from behind, Deadman finds he can inhabit Batman’s body.
Deadman/Batman yells out that the guy with the hook bought the gun and chases him down demanding answers.
The gunman explains why he had to kill Boston Brand. And then tries to jump off a gantry. But Deadman leaves Batman’s body and takes over the killer, using his acrobatics skill to keep him from dying. Once on the ground Deadman/Killer ‘confesses’ to Batman, Robin and Nightwing and asks to be locked up for life.
Wow! That was a great retelling of Deadman. It’s too bad it wrapped up in one issue! I’d love to see more new stories about Deadman. The art was really good as well.
Tying Boston Brand and Dick Grayson to the unluckiest circus on Earth was also logical.
This is the six issue from Batman: Gotham Adventures. This tells the story of how the circus stuntman Deadman dies; it also is a mystery story of figuring out who the murderer is. I thought this story was a bit more strange as it involves the supernatural of someone who died and is a ghost. One interesting part of the issue is when there’s a scene in one of the panel where two criminals are tied up and hanging on light poles with the police on scene; this takes one back to the previous issue four where Catwoman and Batman stopped these criminals from an attempted carjacking. So somehow along the way while Batman was involved with investigating the crime involved in issue four, Batman was also involved with investigating this murder mystery, talk about a busy Batman and Bat team! I thought this little hint of continuity with other issues was fun, since so many of these Batman issues are stand-alone stories.
