"I shall get revenge for our family an' the whole MacGregor Clan. The Campbells have wronged us for two centuries."

Revenge is an age old plot driver, but Hudson Taylor breathes fresh life into it. And she does it sooo well. Exciting conflict rages through the start of this book. The Campbells have always treated the MacGregor clan as unworthy peasants, but this last atrocity sends Malcolm to the Carolinas, bent on exacting revenge while he attempts to rescue his family. Even while revenge and conflict ravages his heart, he makes an appealing hero, and I can totally see why Lauren falls for him.

Don't let the Scottish brogue stop you from picking up this book. After a few minutes, reading it becomes easy and comfortable, but that's not so with other elements of the book. Many times I found my fingers clenching the arms of my recliner, especially during a particularly intense predicament Lauren found herself in. Normally rock-solid in her faith, Lauren questioned why God left her in that awful spot, a reaction I think most of us can relate to.

"Lord, please have mercy on us, " Lauren whispered.

"I see ye're on speaking terms with God again." Malcolm rubbed his chin as he continued to stare at their company.

How could he tease her at a moment like this?
"I have always been on speaking terms with God, especially now." Lauren wrung her hands together and took a deep breath to ease her trembling. She feared her ribs would soon start aching again. "God and I just had a few weeks of silence. "'Tis now over."

Just loved that excerpt! While For Love or Loyalty is a historical, I believe readers of all romance sub-genres will enjoy it as much as I did. Fraught with excitement and danger, bursting with sweet romance, and a promise of two more yummy books in the series, you'll want to scoop this one up fast!

Lauren Campbell was in the wrong place at the wrong time. And now she’s paying for it as she is whisked away aboard a ship and to a depressing fate that awaits her in South Carolina. Behind she leaves an uncaring father and a neglected baby sister, Blair. Will she ever see Blair again? Will she even survive the life of an indentured servant, slaving away in the fields under the hot South Carolinian sun?

Malcolm MacGregor had never planned to kidnap the mild-tempered daughter of his enemy. But when the opportunity presented itself, well… And he is justified in his actions. Sort of. Duncan Campbell pert near killed Malcolm’s brother. And of all of them to torture – the one who actually thought the Campbells and Macgregors might come to terms. But that’s Mr. Brains [Duncan] for you. And if that isn’t bad enough Duncan sold Malcolm’s sister and aging mother into indentured servitude in the Colonies. That was just downright low. With little funds to his name Malcolm spirits Lauren aboard a ship with the idea of her replacing his mother or sister while he pays for the other’s freedom. It will be a voyage not be forgotten.

When a book includes indentured servants, Scotland or ships I’m just naturally drawn in. But when it has all three it’s a humdinger! I can honestly say that I enjoyed the first part of this book. From Scotland to the decks of The Victorious it was a page turner. BUT…after our hero and heroine disembark on their South Carolinian adventure I lost interest. It could be because I’m a maritime nut and hated to leave the ship but I think there’s more to it than just that. The disputes kind of leveled off. And then there was a bordello. That was extremely uncomfortable reading for me. Undoubtedly – without spoilers – what happened in For Love or Loyalty was not uncommon as it is even today in some nations, but to read about that in a book meant to be an enjoyable way of passing time was not my cup of tea. It really ruined the book for me, I’m sad to say. If I were to base my rating on the part I enjoyed it would be an easy five stars. I feel bad for giving such a horrible review. On a more positive note I liked that the Jennifer Hudson Taylor incorporated some of the Scottish dialect and words into many of the characters’ speech.

For Love or Loyalty is a good title for this touching historical romance novel. It relates to more than one instance.

The serene appearance of the cover is also a good choice. It is very descriptive of the female main character and the background hints at the storyline. It is light enough to be eye-catching and dark enough to set the verve of the story.

The characterization was solid and the reader felt a definite connection to each.

I love “highland” type stories. I find Ireland, Scotland, Wales countries to be so fascinating with a sense of mystic lore. However, only part of the story is in Scotland but is very much a story of early colonization before the Revolutionary War. It reminds us there were many other than black people who were cruelly treated and made slaves of under the ruse of “indentured servants”. Many of the “indentured servants” were never freed and many died under the deprivation and cruel treatments of slavery.

This is a story of a family clan severely wronged by another family clan. The eldest son of a widow is determined to seek revenge and tries to get even in a partial way by implementing a hasty act to give him leverage against the other…It backfired!

Attitudes change and new adventures arise. It is never dull in the experiences the main characters of this novel encountered. Events steadily take place to keep the readers interest – on land or on sea.

This story’s contents include: change of heart, illness, violence, cruelty, slavery, “indentured servants”, colonization of America, deprivation, reconciliation, family unity, love, selfishness, power & prestige.

I hesitate to give it a full Five Stars rating because, although well-written, it was quite predictable. At the end, the ”flow” was interrupted and lacked a little energy which left the reader slightly “deflated”.

I, still, review this book giving it a Four and a Half Stars rating.

This book was generously sent to me by a publisher in exchange for an honest review, of which I have given.

Love love love this book! I was SO blessed by this story! For love or loyalty is such an adventure and full journey! Lauren is the kind of Christian woman I want to be and yet this book also holds the reality that even the strongest in Faith have their moments of fear and, sadly, doubt. It also shows how as humans we can't always see the big picture like God can, but that doesn't mean He leaves us! :) Starting out in Scotland Jennifer takes us across the sea to America. The hardships of travel for both the people able to pay and the indentured servants is shown realistically from sickness to danger. There are many great characters in this as Malcolm and Lauren find friends on and off the ship, but their are also many enemies with terrible intentions. Through it all God watches over them as He shapes them into the people they need to be through the trials they face and the decisions they make. Twists and surprises abound within these chapters. Just when I thought I knew what was going to happen Jennifer threw in another turn that I didn't see coming. For Love or Loyalty is a great read with adventure, suspense, Faith, love, courage, hope and so much more! I cannot wait for For Love or Country!!! This is a MUST READ!!! :)

I won a copy from Goodreads First Reads.

I'm sorry. I just can't read this book. I have so many complaints and quirks against For Love or Loyalty. I'm just so annoyed by all of this. I will, of course, explain in further detail. Just continue reading if you want to read them. Or don't. I don't care. I have no intention of sugarcoating this book. I will be blunt and quick.

The dialogue is a piece of work. Remember Romeo and Juliet? Remember how terrible that dialogue is. All those...whatever words and punctuation marks are terribly annoying. For this book, you will imagine those marks and strange words. Then you will incorrectly spell some words on purpose. Like mother as "mither" and other sorts. Hey, they might sound Scottish (or Viking for as much as I know), but they are terrible in words. Audio is okay. Reading is terrible, especially with this certain dialect.

And the conflict is already getting on my nerve. Yes, it may look sweet, but kidnapping is kidnapping. There is no exception to that rule. Kidnapping is kidnapping. The girl is already on her way to Stockholm syndrome. I find that a turn-off.

And the girl, Lauren. You know what? Just look at the previous paragraph at why her character is boring. Stockholm syndrome.

Abandoned point: 2/5

Taylor is an author who clearly does not believe in the maxim "Show, don't tell." And even then, her telling is often faulty. The characters tell the reader they are falling in love long before they have had any significant interactions with the other party (besides, you know, the kidnapping - hardly the basis for love).

The main female lead starts commenting on the male lead's lack of religious belief before he ever even comments on religion himself. It seemed like the author suddenly invented an issue for no reason other than to make the trip more eventful and showcase the heroine's faultless saintliness in more and more ways.

The heroine's past interactions with the male lead's family are explained so far past her kidnapping and other early events that instead of making her (rather one-track) character deeper, it only makes the story more confusing (why was he treating her in certain ways when he knew all along she was a friend of the family?)

I couldn't finish the book, but got decently far because despite the main "romantic" story being poorly done, the background events of ship life and what it was like to be trapped with disease, etc. were still pretty interesting.

My Comments
Malcolm comes undone when he arrives to his village to see devastation and ruin everywhere. His mother and sister have been kidnapped and sold into slavery, his brother has been tortured and left for dead, and homes have been burned to the ground…..all because taxes were due and the Campbell clan took things too far to prove a point. Malcolm becomes enraged and is determined to seek revenge in his hate towards this barbaric family. When one of his men grabs Lauren Campbell in retaliation, Malcolm makes a scheme to use her as leverage against the Campbells and in getting his mother back.

Lauren is responsible for her younger sister, Blair, and enjoys taking food and supplies to the less fortunate. When she is kidnapped, her first impulse is to protect her sister. Then she is able to witness what has been done to her friends, the MacGregors, and is appalled by the damage her brothers and father have committed. She is determined not to show Malcolm fear and to help him get his family back, but can she trust him on his quest for revenge?

Malcolm has already made up his mind about using Lauren, but when he sees her compassionate ways he is deeply conflicted. She’s a Christian and comes from the deceptive Campbell clan, there’s no way she can be genuine and her faith must be easy to come by seeing how she lives in such a comfortable way. She’s never suffered a day in her life, how can she appreciate the faith she claims to have? She must be spoiled deep down, her compassion is just a means to manipulate him, and even though he took her against her will, she really has no right to complain since he has not abused her. There’s no way Malcolm can trust her civility knowing the father she came from, but he makes it his business to protect her and make her as comfortable as possible while she’s under his care. He must not read into their situation beyond that logic. When Lauren insists she forgives him despite his dishonorable method, he refuses the forgiveness as if he doesn’t need it.

Half of the book takes place on a ship that travels from Scotland to the Americas in pursuit of Malcolm’s mother and sister. The rule of boarding for all passengers is for those who cannot afford the passage must travel as indentured servants who will be put up for auction once they reach the shore to be sold into plantations and families. Malcolm secures a place on board for him and Lauren and this is where their journey begins.

**Jennifer Hudson Taylor = BRILLIANT STORYTELLING AUTHOR**
There are two things this author is brilliantly talented at accomplishing when writing her stories…..one, she is able to take two characters from battling families and completely change their perspectives of one another. They go from not liking each other (sometimes even despising one another) and not trusting one another into respecting one another and then they start to feel attracted to one another and this leads into something so much more profound and deeper than anything the reader could ever imagine. Two, she can take controversial subjects (even uninteresting subjects in history) and make a story that will grab the reader’s attention from the start and keep their interest until the last page. Both of these talents are very difficult to come by for any author and Taylor accomplishes both of these aspects in an effortless manner that makes the story flow for her readers.

Even though this book deals with the heartbreaking and unsettling prospects of slavery, the author writes about this historical issue with complete respect, authenticity, compassion, sacrifice, faith, unconventional loyalty, romance, and justice. There is nothing inappropriate in this story and it’s amazing what the characters go through to find Malcolm’s family. I was thrilled and utterly touched with every part of this book!

Lauren even gets unfairly placed in a bordello, but that part of the story is written with utmost tact and I was eager to see what was next for Lauren as she looks to God for mercy and in desperation.

I truly felt that this book was every bit as good as the book trailer, which held my full attention and does a very fitting job in describing EXACTLY how the plot moves. The scenery is accurate, each plight the main characters experience is perfectly written, the danger is felt, the romance is not rushed, forgiveness is given and accepted, there is one nasty storm at sea, there are slaves on the ship, and the mercy/favor/goodness/love of God is felt in the faithfulness and diligence of all Lauren endures when she is unexpectedly removed from her home in several ways. She touches more lives than she ever imagined possible and she learns that even in her suffering that God is ever present and answers her prayers.

There is even a part of the story where Lauren is angry with God and turns her back on Him. I was happy about that also because all Christians experience a time in their walk where their faith is really tested and can relate to this. However, Lauren learns that God never turned His back on her and not only does she heal but she falls in love with her Beloved all over again. That was such a joy for me to watch with Lauren on top of the justice done on her behalf.

I highly recommend this book not just for reading entertainment, but also because of the incredible blessing this story will bring. For Love or Loyalty is for anyone who enjoys a good adventure with two characters from different worlds who adjust to a whole new land. They must conquer treachery, corruption, betrayal, anger, slave owners, the unknown and adjustment to a whole new world, and a legacy of poverty bestowed upon the MacGregors that oppresses them. This incredible book also illustrates freedom, love, family, loyalty, friendship, and strength beyond Malcolm and Lauren’s understanding as they discover God’s love conquers all and is worth every obstacle. I utterly enjoyed Highland Blessings and Highland Sanctuary, but this is easily the author’s best book and I look forward to more!

I want to give a special THANK YOU to the author for the print review copy sent to me. I also want to thank Upon the Rock Publishing for the chance to review this book. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions expressed are my own.

Loved that there were realistic challenges of faith and loved that the end of the book had thought provoking questions for the reader. I wish there would have been more quoting scripture verses them paraphrasing or mentioning “a Bible verse” instead of saying what it was.

For Love or Loyalty ~ The MacGregor Legacy series, Book 1 by Jennifer Hudson Taylor, ©2013

My Review:

The Scottish Highlanders, 1760
Inverawe―home. Smoke swirls in the sky as Malcolm MacGregor and his brother, Thomas, reach the village. The Campbell men have come and burned their home and taken their mither and sister. Their father had been killed in the Jacobite rebellion fifteen years earlier. Duncan Campbell and his son, Scott, came with warriors ~ to collect the unpaid rents from the MacGregors' on his huts. Returning from selling the cattle at market to pay the rents, the Campbells have come a day early. They have taken Iona and Carleen MacGregor, possibly to a debtors' prison, as a warning to the rest of the village. The rents have been raised again, this time with interest ~ "legal robbery." They beat their youngest brother, Graham while trying to protect their mither and sister, and murdered his best friend. For two centuries, the Campbells have tried to wipe out the MacGregor Clansmen. Left in poverty, their furniture has been taken or left to burn before the huts.

Duncan Campbell's eldest daughter, Lauren, sets out to the Kilchurn Manor stables to ride to the ancient relic of Kilchurn Castle with her younger sister, Blair, to enjoy a day of picnicking together on their estate. The castle had passed to the Campbells through marriage. The lands were taken from the MacGregors when King James abolished their clan name generations earlier.

She has been intercepted.

"Malcolm! Thomas!" Lauren's captor ignored them and banged on the worn wooden door. "Open up. I have Lauren Campbell."
The door swung open and Malcolm's tall form emerged. He crossed his arms with a menacing scowl. "Colin, ye were supposed to find my mither an' sister, not bring back a hostage."
--For Love or Loyalty, 18

With Lauren saying she knew her brother and father were collecting rents and then going to the harbor, she and Malcolm are on the way ~ to the colonies, should they not intercept the Campbells at the docks.

This is so beautiful. Approaching Taynuilt, the description is so vivid!

Smoke from chimneys filled the air along with the aroma of mixed spices as they passed various cottages of all shapes and sizes. The sounds of a few rolling carts and carriages passed both directions. Most people had gone inside, but some lingered in the streets. It wasn't a large town, and before long the pleasant aromas and sights gave way to less pleasant odors and lurking shadows.
--Ibid., 29

They reach the dock to check ship rosters for the two women. Given a ship roster from an elderly man, he says his son set sail that morn, The Loyal Adventure, for Charles Towne, South Carolina. Lauren sees her friends' names near the bottom ~ MacGregor. The women had long been sharing their faith together when Lauren came to visit the poor and bring food in her generosity to the villagers. Without a paid fare, his mother, Iona, and sister, Carleen, are now indentured servants to the captain to be sold in Carolina when they arrive. Malcolm asks of another ship going there. The next morn, The Sea Lady is set to sail there just after sunrise.

Lauren has been given things, and not parental love. As the oldest, Malcolm has been the family protector. He is taking her to exchange for his indentured family member, but will it be enough to keep generational feuds going? Reaching America brings other difficulties they would not have expected. For love or loyalty? You will enjoy this story of hope, caring and forgiveness that can change a heart.

***Thank you to author Jennifer Hudson Taylor and Upon the Rock Publicist for sending me this first novel in The MacGregor Legacy series, For Love or Loyalty. This review was written in my own words. No other compensation was received.***

Can the stirrings of his heart foil his ruthless plan?

Malcolm MacGregor wants revenge. After the rival Campbell clan sells his mother into indentured servitude, he devises a scheme to free her--swap his mother for Lauren, the innocent Campbell daughter.

Seeking peace between their families, kind-hearted Lauren agrees to help but doesn't realize the sacrifice she'll have to make. When the truth is revealed that she is the bargaining price to free Malcolm's mother, it's too late. They are on a ship bound for America, and Lauren fears their arrival will forever doom her to a fate worse than death.

While Lauren clings to her faith, her only comfort, that same faith begins to make Malcolm question what it is that he's done. But can he save them both? If he has to choose, will Malcolm fight for love--or loyalty?

I really liked the way that the revenge theme was used here. Yes, revenge as a plot device/driver is an old tried and true method of storytelling, but Jennifer does a good job of keeping you interested and giving it just enough of a twist to have its own life.

Based on what we read in the book, Malcolm's reaction is understandably justified. He knew that Duncan Campbell wouldn't leave his daughter to serve in the colonies and he'd hopefully be able to save his mother. Granted the way he went about achieving his reaction may have left a little to be desired but since he didn't grab Lauren in the first place, he just worked with what he had and I admire a man who can improvise well under comparative pressure. He honestly makes a pretty good hero and I can say that I totally fell for him and can see why Lauren eventually does as well.

Lauren's faith was interesting. I'm not going to lie, I'm not the best religious person and my relationship with God isn't what it could be. However, I don't think I'm that...lost(?) in my faith at all. However, Lauren was just grounded in it. It really got her through a lot and it even convinced Malcolm that there could be more to life than thoughts of revenge. Her rock-hard faith in God also had me gripping the edge of my seat when she got into a rather rough predicament and she began to question her faith and God himself, as she wondered why she was in her situation. Thankfully, good came out of it and she didn't fully lose her faith.

"Lord, please have mercy on us." Lauren whispered.
'Tis now over."

The picture on the cover is beautiful (I'm willing to bet that it's supposed to be Lauren). It really catches all of her in that picture and is so serene. It also catches your eye when you first glance at it.

There were several grammatical/spelling errors that I ran across, but since this was an ARC, I'm hoping they're all fixed when the regular copies go out. The language was also a bit of an issue right at first. A lot of the language is the Scottish brogue, so at first I had a slight challenge with that but it didn't take long for me to get over that. So don't let that dissuade you from reading this book! In fact, please do read it! It's a very good historical fiction that I think also highlights some important issues that are around even today.

*In exchange for my honest review, I received a free ARC copy from a Goodreads giveaway*

Hard to believe when looking at plaid fabrics that each of these is like a calling card of sorts. In Scotland, each clan or family was identified based on the plaid fabric that each of them wore over their clothing, that way they could easily be identified as friend or foe. In the case of the latest novel from Jennifer Hudson Taylor, it identified the members of the MacGregor or Campbell family who remained at more than just odds with one another. The Campbell family was in a position of collecting rent from the land that MacGregor's village was set up on. When the rent was late, they made sure to extract not only the money but interest as well. If they were unable to collect it in cash, they took it out in other ways. That is just what happened when Malcolm and his brother Thomas came home to after a long journey.

Their family home was burnt to the ground and his youngest brother Graham fought valiantly to keep his mother and sister from being taken as indentured servants. Now while he recovers, Malcolm searches for clues to where his mother and sister might be. While sending out spies for answers to search in the surrounding countryside, one of them returns with just the right kind of answer to his dilemma, the daughter of Glenn Campbell, Lauren. He has decided she will be the wagering pawn to get his family back no matter what the costs. He just didn't see that the Campbell clan would sell his family as servants on a ship bound to South Carolina. He didn't plan on taking Lauren with him on that journey to find his family and he gets so much more than he ever dreamed he'd bargained for.

The last thing that Lauren had hoped was that her faith in God would be tested in ways she could never imagine. Being treated as a slave in hopes that her father would do whatever it took to get her back, she knows that her father might search for her only as a way of maintaining his loyalty to his clan but based on the years of living with her father, she knows he does not love her like she wants. Perhaps if Malcolm wanted a true bargaining chip, he should have taken her brother instead. But her loyalty to God will enable her to do whatever she can to win over Malcolm's heart and soul. She believes God placed him in her path so she can help him find salvation for his soul. The journey has only just begun but the storm is brewing on the horizon.

I received For Love or Loyalty by Jennifer Hudson Taylor compliments of Abingdon Press for my honest review and did not receive any monetary compensation for a favorable one. I found myself walking away with a deep Scottish accent after reading this one, because the author writes so well you feel completely immersed in the culture and setting of her book. We have all had times where our faith is tested, where we simply wonder if there is a point to all of this much like Lauren. However skilled mariners are not made in quiet coves but in turbulent storms and that is just what happens in this case. Lauren by far, is my favorite character because her default mode is always God and her faith in Him, no matter how bleak the circumstances. It shows the reader how powerful that can be to people who only see our faith from our actions lived out among us, much like Malcolm. He is completely baffled by Lauren's refusal to act as he thinks she should given her circumstances. A true test of faith. I give this one a 4 out of 5 stars and this is the first novel n the MacGregor Quest Series.

Jennifer Hudson Taylor in her new book, “For Love Or Loyalty” Book One in the MacGregor Quest series published by Abingdon Press takes us into the lives of Malcolm MacGregor and Lauren Campbell.

From the back cover: Can the strings of his heart foil his ruthless plan?

Malcolm MacGregor wants revenge. After the rival Campbell clan sells his mother into indentured servitude, he devises a scheme to free her—swap his mother for Lauren, the innocent Campbell daughter.

Seeking peace between their families, kind-hearted Lauren agrees to help but doesn’t realize the sacrifice she’ll have to make. When the truth is revealed that she is the bargaining price to free Malcom’s mother, it’s too late. They are on a ship bound for America and Lauren fears their arrival will forever doom her to a fate worse than death.

While Lauren clings to her faith, her only comfort, that same faith begins to make Malcom question what it is that he’s done. But can he save them both? If he has to choose, will Malcom fight for love–or loyalty?

There is a touch of “Romeo and Juliet” in this story with the hatred between the two families and Malcolm and Lauren’s romance. That is where the similarity ends and the action really takes off. The journey to free Malcolm’s mother take the duo from Scotland to America on a long, dangerous voyage. Along the way the romance really begins, however Malcolm still keeps to his plan and sells Lauren. Now that he has done what he planned he regrets his actions but can he really save both of them or is he going to have to choose one over the other? ”For Love Or Loyalty” is a nice romance also filled with action and suspense. Jennifer Hudson Taylor has filled this story with many themes, Revenge, Bitterness, Betrayal and what it produces in the person. I enjoyed this aspect of the book as this is not a theme that is popular. Want a fun read that will not only entertain you but make you think as well? Well then I recommend “For Love Or Loyalty”.

After having their name abolished by King James, the McGregor clan lived from day to day struggling to survive. The Campbells were a harsh clan and, being their tenants, the McGregors were at their mercy. When Malcolm McGregor returned home to find his younger brother severely wounded and his mother and sister sold as indentured servants by the Campbells he knew he would do whatever it took to get them back. Kidnapping Duncan Campbell's daughter Lauren was the first step. Malcolm sets off with Lauren to find his mother and sister intent on using Lauren as an exchange for his mother. He never expected to fall in love with her and when Lauren sells herself willingly to save his mother he vows to save her or die trying.
Lauren Campbell was a woman of faith with a compassionate heart. That's why she went to the McGregor clan's home. To bring food and necessities to those less fortunate. Her friendship with Iona and Carleen McGregor was something she cherished. Malcolm's mother, Iona, was like her own mother and when she found out what her father had done she was shocked and, though she was forced on the journey to find her against her will, she soon found herself falling for her captor. When they find Iona worn and tired at a plantation Lauren willingly gave her own self in exchange for the elderly woman. Malcolm vows to get her back and Lauren prays he can find a way. Will Malcolm save her in time or will Lauren succumb to the world of slavery?

I must admit that "Highland" books or books with a Scottish setting are not something I read very often but I was pleasantly surprised when I got into this story. I loved the entire plot from beginning to end and it kept me turning the pages to find out what would happen next. There were a few twists that just enhanced the overall story. I loved that Malcolm was a brawny guy but tender and loving. Lauren displayed amazing faith in even the most dire of circumstances. No matter what she was going through she turned to God without wavering. I also liked that the story brought forth the topic of slavery and indentured servants. The treatment they received was horrible and inhumane and this book described their conditions in an excellent manner. Overall I loved this book and if you are a fan of Scottish romances you will too. Even if you're not I still recommend it.

“FOR LOVE OR LOYALTY” – Book 1 of ‘The MacGregor Legacy’ series – by author Jennifer Hudson Taylor.

In Jennifer’s Scottish-writing style, with the characters speaking in their Scottish dialect ... “For Love or Loyalty” is an absolute gem !
The story begins in Scotland, between two rival clans. Leader and Chief Duncan Campbell – wants revenge upon the MacGregors. Malcolm MacGregor, a leader in his own rights, wants revenge upon Duncan -- for selling his mother and sister into indentured servitude, plus almost beating one of his brothers to death.
Duncan and Malcolm are each so consumed and blinded by their loyalties – where rage, bitterness, anger, revenge, envy, and fierce hatred take control ... and they each make choices that will endanger their own lives as well as those around them.
When Malcolm MacGregor abducts Lauren Campbell, the daughter of his enemy, against her will, they set sail across the Ocean for the Carolina’s, USA. He plans to exchange Lauren for his mother’s release.
What he had not planned on – was her strong witness and faith, to be a selfless example of Christ, caring not only for others, but for Malcolm as well. Lauren is prayerful and humble ... so ashamed and distraught over her own father’s dastardly deeds. She even forgives Malcolm, totally understanding ‘why’ he kidnapped her. Malcolm did not expect her kindness and faith to shine forth like a beacon of hope. Lauren loves Iona - Malcolm’s mother, and his sister - Carleen. She actually wants to help.
Their faiths are put to the test though, challenged - on water and on dry land. And with challenge comes change – whether for good or evil. Will hardened hearts soften ?
Through one adventure after another, with twists and turns, this story-line is so captivating ! Such fierce loyalty to one’s own clan. Will love and the fruits-of-the-Spirit be victorious ?
This book is a gripping story of -- adventure, excitement, disappointment, tragedy, danger, love, loyalty, hatred, friendship, and forgiveness. It is thought-provoking. If ever you wanted to read about determined and intense characters, with a passion for life and family, who aim to defend their beliefs no matter what .... this novel is it !!!
Jennifer Hudson Taylor writes in such a way, that you will bond with certain characters. I was in suspense reading and waiting to learn what would happen next, and did not want the book to end.
I strongly recommend this novel, and cannot wait to read Book 2, “For Love or Country”.

This book made it into my Top 10 Favorites List. It is excellent!

Everything is on the line in this tale. Lauren's father has committed a fatal and very personal crime against Malcolm's family. What begins as an act of revenge leads to a plan to trade Lauren for the freedom of his mother and sister. It won't be without challenges, though. They must cross the ocean together to begin looking for his family and they may not be prepared for the obstacles that wait for them.

As Malcolm's feelings for Lauren begin to change, he questions his original plan, but what choice does he have? By the time he decides he cannot bear to indenture Lauren, she makes a heart-wrenching decision herself and her choice leads to circumstances worse than either of them could have imagined. Now, Malcolm has to find Lauren and a way to rescue her, along with his family.

This book is one of the best books I have ever read and I heartily recommend it to everyone. Jennifer's characters are so real and well-developed and I've found myself missing reading about them since I finished the book. Jennifer carries us through their story so well. Just when things look like they're going to be okay, the next heartbreaking trial enters and we are left wondering how they are going to survive it. While I find most books somewhat predictable, this one was not. When I thought I knew what was going to happen next, I was surprised by what did occur. This book kept me up well into the night because I just couldn't put it down. It's well-written, entertaining, pulls at your heart, and is sure to be your next favorite. I can't wait to read more of Jennifer's books, as this was my first.

To atone for her father's evil, Lauren Campbell agrees to help Malcolm MacGregor. By the time she realizes she's the bargaining price to free Malcolm's mother from indentured servitude, it's too late.

Malcolm MacGregor only wants to free his family and exact revenge against Duncan Campbell. As the pride and joy of Duncan's life, his daughter Lauren is the perfect answer, but during the voyage to America, her faith continues to witness to Malcolm. He becomes enraptured with her, and upon their arrival, discovers he's sold her into a fate worse than death. Now Malcolm has the dilemma: free his family or rescue Lauren? Time is short and with little means, he needs a miracle.

My Review:

I'm a big fan of reading about voyages to America. Maybe it's because we are all immigrants of the heart here in America's big melting pot. Or maybe it's because something about wanting a better life no matter what the cost that calls to each of us across the winds of time. This novel wasn't all about the voyage, but it was most certainly one of my favorite elements of the story. Add to it the drama of being sold off in return for personal gain, and you've got the kind of story that demands to be read.

The characters were well developed, with the hero and heroine having enough conflict between them to serve up grounds for some serious revenge. When Malcolm discovers his what he's done, it's a race against time and fate, with everything that matters on the line. How do you choose between your family and the one your heart loves? Taylor's first novel in the MacGregor Legacy series is a captivating, spell-binding and riveting journey from Scotland to South Carolina, and embodies the spirit of the times with all the elements of a perfect story. This novel is not to be missed, and I highly recommend it.

For Love or for Loyalty.
I Love Jeniffer Hudson's books and normally follow her new releases. This was no different. She has a talent to spin a tale about Scotland and 1700 that makes you wish you lived there and at that time. But this book was a bit different. Even though I, just like Lauren and Malcom see all the good that came out of the bad and the healing that came after pain. It's just at some point - the harshness of MacGregor's clan plight and then the crude journey over the ocean that took so many lives and then even more cruelty and injustice in the colonies. After the pink house I was ready for something good and guess what!!! After that there was only good. Sometimes our lives seem just like that- blow after blow and after blow and you seem to not be able to take a breath in between. At those times God seems oceans away, but in truth after all is over we realize that He was there contemplating and orchestrating everything and even though he caused us a bit of pain and discomfort, this experience delivers people and saves lives. I loved this story and especially the fact that there are two people- Malcom who believes himself cursed and Lauren who holds God tight in her heart, and they both get hit pretty bad. Your faith doesn't save you from the cruel hand of others but it saves your sanity and gives you reason not to give up.
If you are looking for a book beyond a sweet romance and interesting history this book is deffenetly for you. Read it and let it teach you from its characters lives that revenge and bitterness will never give you the peace and happiness that God and forgiveness can give.
I really enjoyed this book and I hope you do too.

3.5 stars

Malcom MacGregor of Scotland has kidnapped Lauren Campbell because her father took Malcom's mother and sister (Lauren's friends) and sold them for indentured servitude over in the Colonies. The MacGregors owed the Campbells money, and Duncan Campbell is a man who holds on to a grudge and is dangerous when he has a vendetta against another.

Lauren realizes that Malcom's mother, Iona, needs to be rescued and is willing to put up with her own indentured servitude to save the elder woman. Carleen, Malcolm's sister, is hopefully more likely to hold out for a longer period of time.

I was confused as to why Duncan used Iona and Carleen's actual names when he sold them. Probably so that they could actually come back after their 7 years' servitude? It allowed Lauren to read that they were heading to North Carolina though.
The weeks at sea were a bit boring, even with the excitement going on. It was also quite convenient every time Malcolm saved Lauren...until they get to sure.

This was a neat historical piece of fiction that showed how the Colonies were formed (I laughed at the "endless land" bit - if only...) and at differences (and similarities) between indentured servants and slaves.

It was weird seeing "mither" and "mon" written out. I've never read them spelled like that, and it was a bit awkward reading it.

I absolutely loved the big theme: Don't lose faith in God. If you don't lose faith in a person, why would you lose faith in God? Being angry at God can make you shut Him out, but He never leaves you.
It was weird though that Lauren talked of forgiving God, even though she admitted she knew it was the devil that put her in the situation.
*shrugs*

I know there is another novel in the series, but this is perfect as it was.

For Love or Loyalty by Jennifer Hudson Taylor is the first book in The MacGregor Legacy series. I liked the two main characters in the book, but the story line itself was a little much to me. Too many things happened in quick succession that it went from being sort of realistic to absolutely not realistic. Even though I was irritated at the plot ideas, I did enjoy the book because the characters and the dialogue were so well written. I really want to read about the other MacGregor brothers in the next books!

Malcolm MacGregor is shocked and dismayed to come home from a trip to find that his mom and sister were taken by the Campbells. When one of MacGregor's men comes back with Lauren Campbell, Malcolm hatches an idea to reclaim his family from indentured service in America. Hauling Lauren with him, they board a ship heading to America, but on the trip over Malcolm regrets his impulsive decision to force Lauren to board the ship with him.

When Lauren Campbell hears what her father has done to the MacGregor's, she is filled with dismay and sadness. She is shocked when Malcolm forces her to travel to America. Lauren disagrees with his methods, but she understands that he just wants to get his family back. While on board with Malcolm, she starts to fall in love with him and can only hope that they can be together since their family feud seems like an insurmountable obstacle.

I loved reading about America before the Revolutionary War! One of the best parts of the book is how the author writes the locations really well whether it is on the boat or in the Carolinas it feels like you are there, too. :-) Overall, it was a pretty good read. I give it 3.5 stars.

I was given this book free from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

"For Love or Loyalty" takes place in Scotland in 1760 and involves two feuding families: the Campbells and the MacGregors. When Duncan Campbell oversteps his position and ruins Malcolm MacGregor's home and family, Malcolm decides he will seek revenge, and that means using Duncan's daughter, Lauren, to get it.

Fast-paced and fully captivating, I found myself lost in the past and totally involved with both Malcolm and Lauren who both ended up being victims of Duncan's wrath and sick sense of justice. As the story unfolds, I became truly in love with both Malcolm and Lauren. Lauren because of her patience, love and faith and Malcolm because he was a very good and honorable "mon" underneath all the anger he felt caused by Duncan's horrible deed. As Malcolm spends time thinking and seeing the Lord move through Lauren, he slowly realizes his actions have consequences that are just as bad as what Duncan did to his family.

This book is a must read for any fan of Scottish or early Colonial history as well as those who enjoy great Christian fiction. The Christian message is not over the top but is placed well throughout the story. It is realistic and is where it would be most used in certain situations: death, sickness, danger, etc. It is also realistic in the fact that some characters question where God was when things happened. Because of this, I think that even a secular audience would enjoy the storyline without feeling preached to.

This book/new series comes HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!

This first book in The MacGregor Quest Series grabbed hold of my attention at the very beginning and never flagged or paused! I didn't know what to expect, never having read one of Jennifer Hudson Taylor's books before, but it was a thoroughly enjoyable read. I can't believe how much was packed into this book without feeling rushed or implausible.

By the mid 1700s Scotland, the MacGregors and Campbells have been feuding for centuries. The Campbells have been trying to wipe out the MacGregor name, and have wealth and the ruling authorities on their side. For Malcolm MacGregor, enough is enough when he returns home to find his Mother and his sister, Carleen, have been kidnapped by the Campbells. He vows revenge.

Lauren Campbell's mother died shortly after her younger sister, Blair, was born 12 years ago. She has tried to shelter her sister as much as possible from the cruelty and violence surrounding them, that her father and brother are regularly involved in. She's also tried to teach her about God, and to continue on her mother's service to the poor and widows. She is heading out for a ride when she is kidnapped in retaliation for the two MacGregor women. From her on out, her fate rests in the hands of Malcolm.

The adventure takes them from Scotland to the South Carolina. It's not a dark, heavy read like I thought it might be, but neither is it light and fluffy. I learned a lot about both Scotland and South Carolina at that time. This was a great story and I can't wait for the next book in the series!

I received this ebook from Netgalley and Abingdon Press for the purpose of an honest review. My opinion is my own. Thank you Abingdon Press!

I am a big fan of Scottish Historical novels and have greatly enjoyed the other Jennifer Hudson Taylor books I have read.

One again she did not disappoint.

For Love or Loyalty begins in Scotland with the feud between the MacGregor and Campbell clans. When Duncan Campbell kidnaps two of the MacGregor women, Malcom MacGregor retaliates by kidnapping Lauren Campbell.

Lauren is willing to help free her friends, but does not realize the price she will have to pay. Not until she is aboard ship on her way to America does she realize that she is leaving behind her homeland and all that requires, for a foreign land and life. She only has her faith to sustain her.

Malcom MacGregor holds onto his anger and need for revenge, but slowly Lauren’s faith begins to show him that there is a better way of life. The duo face a lot of twists and turns and each sacrifice a considerable amount in their way to a new life in America. Before it is all over and done with they will have to confront the past before they can move forward.

Once again Jennifer Hudson Taylor has written a masterful novel. There are plenty of unexpected twist and turns to keep your interest throughout the novel without growing bored. This is a great read! The characters are well fleshed out and you can feel the ebbs and flows of their emotions throughout the story.

I look forward to reading the rest of the series and following the MacGregor story through the trilogy.

For Love Or Loyalty was a great book. While I liked the first half, it was the last half that I found very good and thrilling! I liked how the story wasn't predictable and I was really surprised by some of the things that happened in the book.

The writing style took a little bit for me to get used to, especially the Scottish language, but that made the story feel more real. I really liked the characters, but don't think I have one favorite.

Overall, I liked For Love Or Loyalty a lot and look forward to reading the next books in this series. If you enjoy historical romance I think you'll like this book and recommend it.

This is the first book in MacGregor Legacy series and I thought it was a good, solid read. The Cambpell and MacGregor clans are locked in an age-old feud. When the Campbells abduct Malcolm MacGregor's mother/sister and sell them as indentured servants to America, Malcolm takes Lauren Campbell intending to exchange her for his mother. During the voyage to America, Malcolm sees Lauren's heart and knows she is not like her father, Duncan (an earlier book edition had her father's name as Glenn). Her kindness, her servant's heart, and her faith slowly thaw Malcolm's bitterness. Because of her, Malcolm is drawn towards God as well. At times, it seemed Lauren was almost too perfect and too good to be true. But that was a good contrast to how much her faith is shattered when she is sold to a brothel. For those readers who want to know, her physical virtue is still intact but she is beaten and she sees everything that happens in a brothel. I thought the spiritual journey for both Malcolm and Lauren was believable and well-done. I appreciated the strong spiritual content and the historical language/dialect. The ending was sweet, even if a little predictable. My only reservation is that some of the writing is a little choppy, especially when describing something. Otherwise, I enjoyed this story.
* I received an ARC for free through Goodreads First Reads. This review is my honest opinion.
