A British nurse in World War I desires to know about the reality of the Western Front, and convinces a Belgian soldier to secretly write uncensored letters to her describing the horrors of trench warfare. A twentieth century scholar discovers these letters, and in the process unravels an intricate chain of events that proves both the heroism and the cowardliness of individuals faced with the stresses of war. Tragically, the scholar falls in love with the nurse he is researching, destroying his relationship and breaking down his grasp on reality. Ultimately, he must choose between reality and fiction.
