This short novelette/short story of 8,000 words is the first book in this serial and contains snarky dialogue, extremely inappropriate uses of mistletoe, alpha HEROINES and the weres smart enough to chase them.
All were-hybrid, Georgia Walker wants for Christmas is to spend some time away from her pack and in particular, away from one increasingly dangerous enforcer turned Beta. She has every intention of spending her days basking in the warm Caribbean sun and indulging in an island fling, or two. Anything to forget the way a certain were made her pulse race and skin tingle.
Marcus Legrand has only one goal this holiday season, bring Georgia home and finally claim her for his own. Convincing the strong willed ice princess will take all of his skill and patience, but Marcus is no stranger to hunting prey. He has every intention of putting both his rank and heart on the line.
Laurel is a romance author, who like most writers loves to read. She has no one favorite genre to read because she believes "a good story is a good story" regardless of what genre it's published under. However, her first love (pun intended) is romance. From the sappy romantic chick flick, the sappy YA romance novel to the more risque erotica novels, Laurel is a sucker for a good love story.
Laurel writes paranormal and contemporary romance. She is a self proclaimed, out of the closet nerd, and admits that she can't seem to avoid adding a bit of "nerdology" or "geek-dom" to all of her stories. Living in Miami, she also admits that she can't seem to avoid giving her heroines gorgeous shoes, "In Miami, we worship everything strappy, open toed and just plain hot!"
So lately, I've been on, for a lack of a better term, an Amazon freebie paranormal erotic binge. I don't know why. Maybe I miss badly worded sentences. It's been somewhat disappointing that the last few I tried to read didn't have many badly worded sentences, but I've noticed something else and that will be in an up-coming post. (Which is here: Clothes off I should note that while this book does have some of the whole Alpha issue that those lesser works have, Cremant's treatment of it is better and consent is more to the forefront.)
I want to single this book out, however, because it's not really to my taste, yet the writing is pretty damn good. There is more character development than most similar works, and there is far better description. Additionally, and Cremant deserves a round of applause for this, it is one of only two freebies in the genre I've seen that has a poc on the cover and as a heroine. Most of the other freebies either just have a white guy or a white guy with vaguely Asian features on the cover, and when a woman is present she is usually white. If she isn't, she seems to be latina, but when reading the book it is quite clear the character, despite the cover, is a white woman.
This is not the case with Cremant's book (or even the whole series) and her writing is solid. It's not my taste (it has to do with the alpha thing to be honest), but if it looks like it might be yours, Cremant is worth a try.
Midnight Mistletoe is an intriguingly seductive start to a new shifter series. It is a quick read, consisting of only 33 pages, but the author covers quite a bit of ground within them.
Georgia “Gigi” Walker is a were-hybrid, the only child of her were father and a witch. Gigi is well acquainted with the politics and every little thing within their pack as her father is the Golden Pack’s alpha. As the story opens, Georgia is covertly planning a trip to the Caribbean, away from her parents and her clan. Gigi’s were and human personas compete for control and she is determined to make her own way away from the clan. She doesn’t care that she has responsibilities to the clan, or to her parents, or to her own feelings that she’s trying to submerge. Her were side is not happy as her wolf goes gaga whenever Marcus, her clan’s “pit bull,” as she calls him, is within range. However, Gigi refuses to submit to her were and admit her own very real attraction to him. Gigi knows that she’s entering her estrus cycle and she has decided that her attraction to Marcus is because of those hormonal urges. If she can just escape to the beach, she knows she can satisfy her urges with a willing beach hunk without any strings.
Marcus Legrand is a lone wolf and a High Council Maat, an enforcer of the laws and rites agreed upon hundreds of years ago by the original wolf packs. After being assigned to the Golden Pack to help Gigi’s father deal with a rogue pack, Marcus continues to reside with the Golden Pack. Marcus has found that he respects Gigi’s father and he wants to help the pack recover after the pack’s Beta is killed while they are dealing with the rogue wolves. Gigi, though, is an anomaly to him. He’s had lots of women, but he has desired no one as he desires her. Marcus is asked to return Gigi to her pack as her father has announced that he will be naming his successor and Gigi must be in attendance. If there’s anyone that can hunt prey, it’s Marcus, and Gigi is in his sights.
I really enjoyed this story and the characters are engaging. The characters’ sensuality steams the pages. Be warned that there is a humongously frustrating cliffhanger at the end. I don’t care for cliffhangers and that’s why I’ve not rated it 5 stars. I look forward to reading the follow-up book!
This book is only 33 pages, just long enough to introduce you to Georgia and Marcus. I like them both and I am really looking forward to finding out what happens in their relationship. He should not have left my girl hanging like that though. I felt her pain!
This book is all too brief and has one of the most frustrating cliffhangers I've ever encountered, but I'm giving it five stars. It's an excellent book that packs a quite a punch. I'm waiting in full impatient mode for the next installment.
