Coursodon Dimension #3

Special Attraction

Rate this book
The weirdness continues….

Thanks to a magical transplant from an inter-dimensional enforcer, Hailey Parrish can transform into a hawk. When someone begins dismembering hikers along the Appalachian Trail, the enforcers make use of her feathery talents to catch the killer. Unfortunately, like most things in Hailey’s life, there is nothing ordinary about the assignment. Their target turns out to be maddeningly elusive, they rescue a stray dog that makes a sewage treatment plant seem pleasantly fragrant, and stopping the murders turns out to be the least of their worries.

Special Attraction, the third book in the Coursodon Dimension series, combines paranormal romance, urban fantasy, a bit of science fiction and a healthy dose of quirky humor.

Special Attraction: M.L. Ryan

Imagine what would happen if someone decided to infiltrate your dreams and control your thoughts and every move. What would you do if you were at their mercy and could not resist their wishes? What if this person was the one you and your investigative group are hunting this very person that seems to have latched on to you? Killing and dismembering hikers in many different areas this person regales and admires his work as those that lay victim to him leave a bloody and horrific scene at each site of his work.

Hailey Parrish, Sebastian Kess and Alex Sutherland are now tasked with the difficult job of finding this person and bringing him to justice. Hailey now thanks to Sebastian and a magical transplant from Sebastian can now transform herself into a hawk. Now, you might say why would anyone want this power? Hailey’s power allows her to explore, hunt, investigate and report back to the others what she sees, finds and learns without the worry of anyone seeing her or knowing that she is there. As she is our narrator and relates the story to us her job is to fly around and hope to get a look at the person that is responsible for the carnage that I have described. She is what she explains a Yterixa, someone who can transform into an animal and is suited for this special reconnaissance job. But, not everyone is happy with her escapades, as you will learn early on as she returns and many different conversations and discussions arise between her boyfriend Alex and Sebastian who used to be more than just her superior. Actually, when and if you read Special Rewards their first adventure you will learn what I mean.

As they discuss this latest situation and mull over why this person is leaving a trail of body parts, Hailey realizes that she does not quite understand the technical possibilities that would allow someone not to show up on Cortez’s radar let’s call it. How can someone be somewhere and yet nothing about them is visible or known? The plot thickens as Karttyx the head of the Coursodon, has decided to make an appearance and here is where things begin to happen as she brings everyone together, discusses their options and decides that Hailey should become now become a permanent part of the group. Learning more about the different dimensions and those in charge we are reminded on page 47 that Alex’s parents are the Royal Family or King and Queen of Alenquai and his brother is would be their next in line. Being King and Queen affords them many rights and powers but as we hear the discussion and learn the gravity of the situation Karttyx makes a bold statement about Hailey and her new role. Not happy and definitely having a tantrum, Alex finds it difficult to contain himself when he learns that Hailey is up for the job. However, first they have to figure out just what makes this killer different, why Karttyx did not want to wait until he strikes again and finally how she would use her new found Courso-human Hybrid powers to their advantage. But, before I forget she did bring something back with her, a dog. But, wait until you learn more about Rufus.

As the story develops we learn more about the Coursodon, their powers and the friction that develops between Alex and Hailey when she decides to assert her independence. But, sometimes tempers flare and things happen that should not as Hailey decides to take on her parents. When her mother hands her a line that she could do without it, Sebastian quickly defuses it with his handsome charm. Finally leaving they all regroup, discuss what the plan might be but something happens that will change it all. Just why is Rufus so attached to Hailey and what happens when she goes missing? Just what happens to her will explain why there are so many bodies that have been mutilated and more to come. As we hear the voice of a killer who thinks he should be revered, honored and worshiped we hear Hailey trying to process what he’s saying amidst the searing pain in her head. A message that he wants delivered would change it all as she returns, relates what happened as they are summoned to meet with the Royal Family.

Finding herself in the Coursodon dimension they wonder just how Rufus, an animal was able to get through the portal, which sends up a red flag about who or what he might really, be. Processing what they plan to do, meeting with the man claiming to be called Doc Martens, Hailey submits to interrogation by many in order to clarify what she has learned and remembers. But, the Royal Family, or Alex’s parents will succumb to this killer’s demand if no solution come to pass before the deadline.

A third dimension that no one told her about or knew it about could that be true? How can someone disappear without leaving his or her magical signature anywhere or anyone one being able to locate any trace of the person in that dimension? But, there is more as Hailey reveals something even stranger as this illusive Doc enters her dream and presents her with a small-egg shaped stone. The significance you will learn when the final reveal is made but first you won’t believe what happens when they learn whom Rufus really is and why he is so protective of Hailey. Enter Hewlyxnathin her mentor who is teaching her more about her powers and ability to transform. Practicing she releases some energy but then someone else transforms too. As the truth about Rufus or Ulut comes to light Alex feels threatened. Thinking he has some feelings for Hailey at times clouds his judgment about him and might leave them vulnerable when danger threatens.
As their plan to capture the killer comes to pass with the help of the small stone and Ulut they learn his true identity and hope to stop him before it’s too late. An ending that will surprise you and more twists and turns than the roller coaster at Coney Island or in a fun park, as Alex and Sebastian face off with a killer leaving Hailey and Ulut to save them but can they?

Special Attraction: is if Hailey changing into a Hawk? Is it The killer who wants attention and will do anything to get it? Is it the entire Coursodon team that you cannot resist? Or is it a special dog or Ulut that can’t seem to stay away from Hailey because he as well as Alex have a special attraction to her? What happens to the killer? What is the fate of Alex and Sebastian? Will the killings stop? Some questions are answered and others will have to wait to be answered when author M.L. Ryan pens Book4. Characters that are sarcastic, humorous and at times take their jobs quite seriously as once again author M.L. Ryan enlightens readers about those that live in different dimensions and whose hopes and dreams are not any different than ours: living in peace, safety, with love and free. Using a special and unique touch of magic, transformation and other special effects that if this were a movie would keep viewers transfixed to the silver screen: Special Attraction: read it you won’t be disappointed.

Hailey still comes to terms with the fact that she now possess some magic as well as kind of shapeshifting abilities. Her transformation to a Harris hawk at will comes handy when a killer is on the loose on the Appalachian Trail and it appears as if the culprit comes from Coursodon. Together with Alex and Sebastian, Hailey tries to help their team to find the killer but he seems to be always a step ahead and aware of them. Soon his fascination with Hailey becomes dangerous when he leaves bodies like presents with messages for Hailey. When he kidnaps her to deliver a message, Hailey learns that there is more than one dimension out there..

I have to say that the third book was the best so far in this series: the action starts on the very first page and I couldn't put my kindle away. The author has a great sense of humor and I love her imagination. Coursodon is an interesting world and the third dimension is completely different. I'm looking forward to what comes next and of course I have already downloaded the fourth book. Alex and Hailey are my new addiction.

I hate not finishing books and not finishing series, so I gave this one a chance. It was better than book two, but still took over two months to finish, because of all the unnecessary, and extremely boring bits.

However, there are fewer typos and misused words, so that's an improvement. Regardless, this is a series I'm not going to finish. I enjoyed the first book, hated the second, decided to give it a second chance with the third, and I give up.

Just great reading

This is one of the series that started me reading urban fantasy. It’s magical dimension(s) along with trials and tribulations of being a human learning about magic for the first time and totally engaging. Combined with characters to fall in love with, it makes for delightful rainy or sunny day entertainment.

The third in the series and still great. Sometime series get less interesting or overdone the farther into a series you get. This was just as great as the first in the series. The new characters added in were amazing and well developed. I love this premise of modern and magic mixed together. Look forward to reading more from this author.

Special Attraction by ML Ryan
Book Three of The Coursodon Dimension Series
Warning: This review may contain mild spoilers for the previous two books in the series.
Hailey Parrish’s life continues to become less and less ordinary. The days when she was a chinchilla milker are far behind her. She now works for her lover, Alex Sunderland. Her magical abilities are in better control and she can even shift into the shape of a hawk.
As bodies are discovered dismembered along a hiking trail near Hailey’s home, Alex, Hailey, and Sebastian are three of the magical investigators the Coursodon dimension is employing to attempt to find the murderer. Since the crimes are steeped in magic, the criminal must be found or risk exposing more innocent humans to something that cannot be understood by the human dimension, even if the Courso detectives can’t find a trace of Courso magic at the crime scenes.
Even Hailey, searching as a hawk, can’t seem to bring them any closer to the evil creature slaughtering hikers. Though they do discover a poor, dirty, very large dog abandoned on the mountain. He stinks of sewage. They take him home with them to try to determine if his owner is related to the killings in any way.
Once again, Hailey and her friends will be back and forth across the inter-dimensional border as they try to solve this perplexing crime.
M.L. Ryan continues with the Coursodon winning streak. This is yet another witty, engrossing, novel in the Coursodon series. Sebastian, Hailey, and Alex continue to have their personalities expanded upon, making them more and more complete. They are beginning to feel like old friends. The world-building continues. Soon, Coursodon will have a full-fledged map, with stores and complete town names filled in to compare with each large mirror town (or so it feels). I have enjoyed learning more and more about this world and its unique customs and traits.
Ryan has a way of writing that is not so informal as to be conversational, but is encapsulating, so the reader knows that each word is important and meant for the reader’s ears only. It is a completely engrossing and entrancing.
This series is excellent and one of those I encourage readers to experience for themselves. While there is romance, and it is a strong and beautiful one, there are always other plot elements to keep the reader entertained and lusting for more action.
I must give this book 5 out of 5 glittering stars, simply because there was so much going on, it was exciting, there was never a dull moment.
I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

Special Attraction is the third book in the Coursodon Dimension. At first, I was a bit worried to read it without taking a look at the first two books even though it is advertised as a stand-alone. My biggest concern was not understanding the world enough, especially since our MC, Hailey, has changed so significantly from the first book. But rest assured all you who are reading this, M.L. Ryan does a pretty decent job creating the world of Coursodon and mapping out its relations to earth. As for Hailey's story, you barely even notice because she is just so wonderfully written that she doesn't feel "foreign" or developed already. If that makes any sense.

Hailey was a super awesome character to read from the perspective of. She's sassy and not afraid to speak her own mind. We first meet her as she scouts the mountains for traces of a killer in her hawk form. Right from the start, we get to see her in her second form and we get connected with her as she witnesses the horror of mangled bodies, and the struggle and weakness that she feels when she turns back to human. Throughout the entire book, Hailey kept me entertained with her sass and underneath all that attitude is someone with a true heart of gold.

Alex, oh dear, I may have a new addition to my life of perfect book boyfriends. Seriously, he's pretty much perfection. A bit alpha male, but he's so caring and attentive to Hailey it just melts my heart. Him and Hailey are literally one of the cutest couples I've read, and are possibly one of the few who has endured hell for each other.

Sebastian was an interesting character. From what I can gather from the first book, Sebastian's spirit was living inside of Hailey. Throughout the book, he kind of played the devil's advocate. Sometimes you admired him, other times he was a jerk. Nonetheless, he was pretty entertaining. ;)

Uluf is probably my favorite character. No offense to Hailey and Alex, but there was just something so soulful about Uluf that will move your heartstrings. He's strong but adorably awkward and his personality is just so mournful (?) and adorable that it's really hard not to like him. Plus he's not as big of a macho man as Alex. XD

The entire book was chock full of suspense and tension. The first scene depicts a grisly scene with mutilated body parts scattered all over the mountains. I feel like my biggest problem was the "climax" of the story. With all the tension that is vibrating throughout the entire story, I expected a massive climax with like flaming arrows flying down from heaven. Instead, it's kind of blurry. Hailey sort of just defeats Doc Marten (her name for Mr. Bad Guy) and all we really "read" is a bright light flashes and Hailey blacks out. Don’t get me wrong, I was super relieved that they finally caught the bad guy, but I wanted something big.

Other than that, I would definitely recommend Special Attraction. It's full of action, suspense, heartthrobs, and adorable romance. To sum things up, Hailey is awesome, Alex is adorable, Sebastian is quite the character, Doc Martens is nutso, and Uluf is the best, can I please have him?

After loving the first two books in this series, I was looking forward to reuniting with old friends. When I really get into a story the characters become almost flesh and blood, almost family.

The beginning paragraph is a shock, a jump start to your nervous system. The scene looks like a massacre, with body parts scattered all over the place.

Hailey took this all in from her perch on a tree limb. She was in her avian form as a large brown hawk. Mighty convenient for ‘fly on the wall’ surveillance as a member of the supernatural enforcers team, or Xyzok. Their job is to keep the inter-dimensional bad guys from harming humans.

Yterita, or form bending is one of the residual abilities left behind in Hailey after expelling Sebastian from her body. All Coursos have magical abilites.

The killer’s signature is body parts left like a trail of bread crumbs, but the trail remains a dead end. Hailey and Alex have to track down the illusive Courso who killed the hikers and stop him from killing again.

While on an early evening jog, Hailey is kidnapped by the killer. She’s not a threat to him so she’s in no immediate danger. He wants her to deliver a message to the Courso. If what he reveals is true, then both worlds are in danger.

It’s been fun getting reaquainted with these characters.

Sebastian is still trying to hook up with Hailey’s best friend Rachel. She’s the one for him, if there is such a thing. He is a fan of the female form and quite a womanizer, but he’s curbed his appetite in anticipation of sweeping Rachel off her feet, literally.

Rachel still has so idea about the Courso or Hailey’s hidden abilities. I was curious as to if or when she might learn their secrets.

Then there’s the matter of Hailey’s peculiar sense of smell. I wondered where that might come into play as the author kept reminding me of it in interesting tidbits.

Another thing I liked were the animals. Vinnie, Haileys cat is your typical cat. Deigns you with his presence when he feels like it.

And now, Hailey has brought home a stray. A large dog of questionable breed that needed a home. The fun part was reading to see what she would name him. She had many temporary names such as Curly Dog, Putrid Pup(he was in need of a bath),Big Brownie, Feed-Lot-Fido, and finally Rufus. Not sure if that will stick as she says she’s just trying it out.

Everyone stayed in character and the scenes, whether humorous, steamy, or mysterious, were never boring, always enticing me to read further. And the dialogue was so well written I found myself wanting to join in and add my two cents worth.

Another hit from M.L. Ryan and a big thank you for a job so well done!

I received this book for my honest and unbiased review.

To say that reading will open a whole new dimension has taken on new meaning for Hailey, who now rubs elbows with highly evolved beings from another plane of existence. Special Attraction, book three in the Coursodon Dimension Series by M. L. Ryan is probably my favorite to date! Filled with her signature snark, humor, intrigue and creative flare, Ms. Ryan introduces even more quirkiness and adventure for Hailey, her other-dimensional boyfriend, Alex and the ever egotistical and dry Sebastian! Their mission is to track down and stop a serial murderer who is taunting them with a trail of bloody body parts, then manages to disappear without leaving a trace. Is there another dimension that even Sebastian doesn’t have knowledge of? Not to say that our heroine isn’t easily distracted, but along the way, our soft-hearted Hailey finds a stray she cannot leave behind, but is there more to this canine than meets the eye?

Strap in for the wild ride across dimensions that M. L. Ryan has filled with great one-liners, adventure, and enough twists to cause whiplash as this tale races to the finish! Never has a heroine who seems so unlikely to save the world stepped to the challenge with such flair!

Think about it, a being from another dimension, far advanced from ours gets trapped in your Kindle, then makes the leap from there to your mind! I don’t know about you, but I currently own several Kindles, and I’m thinking M. L. Ryan may know something we don’t!! A special note for those who own other e-Readers, don’t be too sure it couldn’t happen to you, too! Gives meaning to truly escaping into the world of reading!

I have not had the privilege of reading the first two books but it didn’t really seem to matter. I was told I could read this as a standalone, once I figured out it was part of a series, and they were right. Ryan gives enough detail on what has previously happened to Hailey that I could read this book and completely enjoy it. I am sure that it would have been even better if I had read the others but this story line stands on its own.

Hailey Parrish

Now this girl was hilarious. She was snarky and sarcastic but she was also caring and considerate to almost everyone. Because some guy was stuck in her Kindle and then stuck sharing a body with her, she can now change into a hawk.
Yes, exactly what I said. She had a guy stuck in her kindle, and then he was stuck in her body…with her. Now the Courso use her new abilities to do scout missions and investigations. She definitely has a different way of looking at the world and she is quite funny through the whole book.

“..He needs to have a name more fitting for a diabolical, power-mad villain.”
“Well, Fuck Face might work,” I offered, “But I’m not sure I can picture your parents saying it.”

Alex Sutherland and Sebastian Kess

These two are great additions to the book. Alex is sweet and caring with Hailey as well as being a fierce warrior when looking for the psychopath. Alex is so great with Hailey. He is able to keep up with her sarcasm and snarkiness as well as hold her back when she needs to keep it in check. His is all around a hunk and a great boyfriend. Sebastian is egotistical and has a dry sense of humor. (He was the guy stuck in the Kindle and shared a body with Hailey). Sebastian loves to get Hailey going. He is such an instigator and he is really really good at it. But he also cares a lot about Hailey and tries to help her anyway he can.

I really liked this book. It was a quick read and really enjoyable. There was a lot of action, humor, and romance. The only problem I had was pronouncing the names. I mean some of these words are ridiculously hard to pronounce. Other than that I really ate up this book. It makes me want to go pick up the others so I can learn more about everyones personalities and how they interact with each other.

4.8/5

I love how these books continue to grow and change book by book, slowly expanding the world in the individual segment. (: Each book is set in different places, so you don't get too bored "sitting" in one place.

Also, I love how, true to the form of a good urban fantasy, there is a new story or conflict in every book that needs resolving. This was, by far, my favorite plot of the three. I can only assume I will love the individual story-lines even more as the series progresses.

Hailey and Sebastard are back to their snarking and I still adore their banter and constant arguing. They are like brother and sister fighting all the time.

Alex and Hailey are still a sweet couple who talk things through. I love that the personalities of all three characters have rubbed off on one another, especially their senses of humor. That makes for a very entertaining read. But again, neither the snark nor the romance are too heavy. I love love love love love that this series has a progression of the romance and it is not insta-love *gags*. This book takes place a few months after the series starts and I am really enjoying the pace.

I am a bit disappointed that I got to go on a reading binge with these three books and have to wait for the next book to come out. It hardly seems fair.

The villains. *grins* As you can probably tell from the blurb for this book, there is a murder/ serial killer chopping people up and leaving little pieces behind. Um, yeah, this dude is a major step up from the previous villains.
Maybe I just crave a little bit of psycho in my suspense novels (okay, there is no maybe about it. I'm sick. )

I am a huge fan of suspense novels and Urban fantasy, so I loved the whols "catch the serial killer" aspect of the story. I enjoyed this book immensely and eagerly await the fourth book in the series. (:

If you were lucky enough to catch M. L. Ryan’s first two installments in the Coursodon Dimension Series, you will not be disappointed with her latest effort, Special Attraction. Ryan has again crafted a fast-paced page-turner with just the right mix of intrigue, romance, and humor. As in the previous two books, the tale is told through the eyes of thirtyish Tucson resident Hailey Parrish, who inadvertently has discovered a parallel dimension and picked up some unusual abilities in the process. In this edition, Hailey also discovers her keen desire to join her crime-fighting Courso colleagues, boyfriend Alex and his mentor Sebastian, in the dangerous job of stopping inter-dimensional crime.

Ryan is adept at snappy dialogue and creating characters we care about. This makes Special Attraction and the entire series easy to recommend to fans of urban fantasy as well readers who like contemporary fiction that is both suspenseful and will have you laughing out loud, too. And the heroine can turn into a hawk. That’s pretty cool, as well.

This is the third book and it was hold-onto-your-seat full of action and humor. Oh, and romance. Do NOT forget the romance. Alex (pause for heavy sigh) is an absolute dream and Hailey's life has not been the same since she met him and Sebastian. And, she wouldn't have it any other way.

Even though this is the third book in the series, it can easily be read on its own. Ms. Ryan gives just enough details of what happened previously that you don't feel lost. I'm sure, though, that reading it in conjunction with the other books could only make things better. I especially would like to read how Hailey and Alex (pause for heavy sigh) got together.

It was a quick read... I read it in one sitting, which these days is not easy for me, just because of how busy I am, but once I started it, I could not put it down. And there were several laugh out loud moments. Ms. Ryan has created some wonderfully quirky characters that I just fell in love with...and Alex (pause for heavy sigh), let's just say he's my new book boyfriend.

I really liked the previous books in this series but I LOVE this one. All the books are well written but this one seemed to have a unique voice. Hailey, Alex and Sebastian are recovering from the last mission and knee deep in another when we meet them again. It seems some psycho has been killing people, dismembering them and leaving a trail of body parts in his wake. How will the trio overcome this latest threat? With a little help from man's best friend.

I loved that the story was about solving the mystery and not about the romance. Don't get me wrong, I love the romance between Hailey and Alex but that isn't the main focus of the story. I enjoy the back and forth between Hailey and Sebastian and found myself chuckling quite a few times. Of course our trio of heroes were triumphant once again, but I'm not so sure the threat is gone. I can't wait to see what is going to happen in book 4!

I received this book from the author in exchange for my honest opinion.

Waiting and pacing for book 5.

This review is from: Special Attraction (The Coursodon Dimension Book 3) (Kindle Edition)

Dimensional planes take on a whole new meaning once it's laid out so well in fiction, and not just a maybe by science. You are gripped and follow this where it goes happily, there is a sexy otherworldly boyfriend. There is a touch of evil ready to destroy an alternate world and when things get just where you think it's going buckle in cause it twists around like a tilt a whirl at the county fair. Read all four books and can't wait for number 5 !! M.L. Ryan can weave a spell binding tale you want to join in the adventure of.

Color me yellow?

Kindle Unlimited - Thank you!

I started highlighting giggles, great phrases, exceptional wordsmithing, etcetera. Had to stop before the entire book was a solid expanse of florescent yellow. Ryan really knows how to get the English language (and maybe others, known and unknown) to come out and play. And cursing elevated to an art? Fun times.

Have to mention the visit from Hailey's parents. Gotta rate it as a classic. That dog fart!?!? Priceless.

Excellent cover art throughout the series, but especially this book. Would compliment the artist but didn't find an attribution. If done by the author? Brava!

Loved it.

What a great series. I enjoyed all three books, Special Attraction being my favorite! I loved Rufus and his never ending puppy breath. These books were so original, funny, suspenseful and action packed. I liked that M. l. Ryan gave short explanations to events in the other books so you could read the books as a stand alone and not be lost. I can't wait for book 4 which I hope will be out soon. I so loved all of the characters and I can't wait to hear what they do next. Thanks again for such a unique story line.

This series just gets better and better.
Hailey is now able to Form-Bend into her Hawk form. She is now assisting the protection team of Xyxoc who protect humans from inter-dimensional bad guys.
Three hikers go missing and their dismembered bodies are found ... and the story begins.
There is the fourth attempt on Hailey's life and she is really not happy about this. Added to this, her sex life keeps being interrupted because of what is going on and the impromptu planning and strategy meetings that are being called. This really annoys her.
Besides the sci-fi and romance, this story has a most unusual kidnapping, more intrigue and magic, adventure and mystery than the first two books and lots of very funny scenes.
I must say that I really enjoyed this story the most so far with all its quirky and serious characters and am looking forward to the rest of this series.
Hollie Jackson has really done a great narration which enhances a very clever and well-written story.
I received a free audio version of this book from the author and this is my unbiased review.
