Ariyoshi is well known for her works of the ballet stories. Swan (Part 1, 1977 – 1980, and Part 2, 1980 – 1981),[1] Swan -The Prayer of Swan- (1982–1983) and Applause are the representative works. These are all stories of ballet and ballerinas.

manga ini gw baca udah lama...bgt. dan gw jatuh cinta padanya. berbeda dgn serial marichan pada umumnya, Swan menggambarkan perjalanan dan kisah hidup Mari si penari. Mari hanyalah seorang anak penggemar balet biasa. perjumpaannya dengan solis Rusia- alexei Sergeyef- pada pementasan danau angsa teater bolshoi merubah semuanya.
cerita yang penuh inspirasi buat saya. perjuangan hidup, cita-cita hingga kisah cinta.
gw jadi banyak tahu tentang balet, drama, dan kisah2nya. mulai dari giselle, swan lake, spartacus, sepatu merah, dll. i really like it. sampe2 gw nyari2 ini manga dimana2. karena gramedia udah ga nyetak lagi. syukurlah akhirnya aku menemukannya...dah tak terhitung berapa kali gw baca manga ini. ratusan kali ya ?? kalau ada yang nanya, manga apa yang paling berkesan buat saya. pasti akan saya jawab. btw, si mari sekarang udah jadi penari top dunia blm ya??

Buat pencinta cerita balet, then you must read this one, man!
Karena ini adalah komik balet terbaguss!!
Dari segi gambar mungkin kalah imut ama seri Marichan yang lebih terkenal itu tapii dari segi karakter and jalan cerita, waahh.. Marichan mah putusss!!
Swan is waaayyy much better than Marichan!!
Kalo abis baca Marichan terus baca Swan, Marichan itu kesannya balet buat anak2 yang fun2 aja sementara Swan itu balet profesional, mantaps bangets dhee!!
And yang bikin asyik adalah karena serial Swan ini juga dibumbui kisah percintaan, jadi ngga hanya membahas balet aja, oohh oohh..

I didn't love this one as much as the last one, but it was still enjoyable! The romances are so funny. The ending made me :O

Hijiri has made it to London after a brief stopover in Moscow turned into two volumes. I feel like we don't get as much British culture as we did in Moscow. Not that we get a lot of Russian culture either, but I have a feeling that the author was fascinated by Russia and used London merely as a change of scenery.
This volume is primarily about Hijiri battling it out with Sydney England, a British ballerina. Their relationship falls into a theme that is played over and over again in shoujo manga. The girl has an enemy (usually female). By the end of the volume, the enemy has become a friend, won over by the main character's selflessness and capability. In this case, Sydney comes to respect Hijiri's passion for ballet as well as the fact that Hijiri put herself on the line when Sydney sneaks out after hours.
We are repeatedly told two things in this series. First, that Hijiri has that "it" factor, the artistic beauty and style that can't be taught. Second, that Hijiri has a fatal flaw. We're never told exactly what that is. I guess it's the lack of technical prowess. The series does a great job at portraying Hijiri's ability to embody her characters, but it doesn't do a good job portraying the fatal flaw.
One of my favorite things about Swan is learning about so many classical ballets. Each volume feature one or more ballets. Many are famous such as Swan Lake or Copelia. But others are new to me, like The Hunchback Pony. Hijiri was cast as the hunchbacked pony. I felt bad for her at being cast as such a ridiculous character, but apparently it's quite an honor.

I felt sorry for Sidney and her boyfriend, maybe she is right, maybe the only way to perfection is sacrifice, that love gets in the way of dreams.
I don't get what Masumi's flaw is?! Is it the shape of her legs? But she was created like this!! She can't change her build!
I see that Masumi is so attracted to Kusakabe-san but in my heart I wish she marries Alexei.
Masumi learns strength of the heart can help her overcome any obstacles!

minor gripe: it's Margot Fonteyn, not Margaret. (i have noticed that CMX is particularly bad when it comes to accuracy - grr, Emma). other than that, Masumi learns more lessons about life and art with the customary keyed-up and exquisite illustrations.

Wah wah ... manga ini tidak seringan yang dulu saya sangka waktu membelinya. Begitu banyak mengupas balet dan kehidupan pengrajin dunia seni yang satu ini, sampai sisi filosofis dan ideologi.
