I admit I may not be completely objective in my review because I had the honor of spending some time with the author, Lloyd Kropp, in the last year of his life. I found this novel to be beautifully written, with descriptions that painted detailed images. An imaginative, intriguing story that culminates with thought provoking realizations about life. Mr. Kropp does a wonderful job of making the reader feeI like they are going through this experience alongside Peter Sutherland. It is a page turner that I could not put down. I am excited to read more of his work!
I thoroughly enjoyed this novel about a college professor whose life is in the tank and who hopes that a sailing trip will help him sort things out. In the days that follow he is rescued twice from certain death, both before and after experiencing life in a strange new world that offers elements of paradise along with dark foreboding. In the end , he must choose between between a group of castaways who have resigned themselves to a limited existence far from civilization and a risky return to a world he knows far better, but one that has left him a broken man searching desperately for fulfillment. Through it all, the author creates vivid images of both worlds and the journey that opens the professors eyes to new experiences and perspectives but no real answers.
