Then Came You

Rate this book
A woman’s world is turned upside down by one night’s torrid fling in this Animal Magnetism romance from New York Times bestselling author Jill Shalvis.

Veterinary intern Emily can’t believe she wound up in the small town of Sunshine, Idaho, instead of the Los Angeles clinic she had always imagined. Now she has to put her plans to move to L.A. on hold for a whole year while she fulfills the obligation of her vet school scholarship.

Then Wyatt, her gorgeous one-night stand from a Reno vet conference, introduces himself as her new boss. And Emily is just as drawn to his seductive looks and quiet strength as she was on that very steamy night. She soon learns that Wyatt isn’t just a laid-back doctor, but a delicious alpha male tempting her away from her carefully laid-out plans...

Jill’s books blend laugh-out-loud moments with emotional gut punches, slow-burn tension, and deeply earned happily ever afters.

She writes the stories she loves to read: small-town romance and romantic comedies packed with heart, heat, second chances, grumpy/sunshine sparks, and the kind of found-family vibes that make you want to move right into the pages. Many of her series are perfect for binge-reading, and a number of her books are available in Kindle Unlimited and at major retailers.

Then Came You is a warm-hearted contemporary romance that fits the bill for easy summer reading. This is the fifth in the series set in Idaho but it can be read as a standalone. I picked up this book with the new-to-me author because I was inspired by a recent viewing of "All Creatures Great and Small" and I have a soft spot for dogs.

Dr. Emily Stevens has just completed her veterinarian program. Next up is the one-year internship as a requirement of her scholarship program. She wanted the position in the Los Angeles clinic, as it would have enabled her to stay close to her widower father and watch over him. But instead she is placed in a small town practice, which would entail helicopter rides to access their ranch clients in rural Idaho. At least her younger sister moves in with Emily to provide moral support. But a bigger surprise awaits as her new supervisor is the veterinarian with whom Emily had a passionate one night stand during a conference three months earlier. Awkward.
This was the stuff nightmares were made of. Going to school in your Spiderman pj’s. Giving a public speech naked. And discovering you’d accidentally slept with your boss.

Dr. Wyatt Stone's confidence and calm demeanor win over the trust of the animal patients. Despite her efforts to count down the days before she can leave Idaho, Emily finds his charm difficult to resist. As they work together in a family-owned clinic, complete with its own menagerie, feelings deepen.
Wyatt should’ve looked ridiculous sitting on the floor, leaning into the crate making kissy noises at the cat, but he didn’t. He looked … mouthwatering. “Hey, sweet thing,” he said in a low cajoling voice. “Come on out. I’ll gonna love you up, I promise. You know you want some of that.”

“Oh, please,” Emily said on a laugh to cover up the fact that her bones melted at the sound of him. ...

But hell if the cat didn’t shift ever so slightly closer to Wyatt and sniff at him. Wyatt flashed both Sweetie and Emily a smile. “Aw, that’s it,” he crooned to the suspicious, wary cat.

It may be fictionalized, but I enjoyed this glimpse into a veterinarian practice. What animal lover could resist a foul-mouthed parrot named Peanut screaming "boner" at inappropriate moments? There were plenty of other animals who played supporting roles.

The main protagonists were likeable people, the type I'd want as friends, and their characters were well developed with understandable motivations. Both Emily and Wyatt shared their homes with their respective siblings, who provided humorous foils. Wyatt's sisters are featured in the next two books. There was even a little bit of tension from criminal activity, but nothing dangerous enough to destroy the easygoing vibe of this story.

I really love the way this author write her characters. I can't help but like them, they never fail to be good honest what you want in a friend types. She ups that by adding animals, animal rescue, animal search and rescue, Veterinarians. Did I mention cute animals ? Adorable ones.
This book follows a young woman on her internship Veterinarian tour. She is sent to Idaho when she missed her chance to get the Los Angeles Foo Foo clinic. Unhappy with this middle of nowhere place she sets her focus on her plan, make it 365 days, race back to LA and work with glamorous clients and earn big money. She's not shallow she has family that she cares for, and they are costly. On her first day at work In Idaho she meets her coworkers and is floored when one of them is her one night stand from a conventions she attended. Oh and it was one fabulous night, her first and only one night stand. They decide to keep it business like and ignore the past. Well honestly, do you think this is going to be that simple ? Ha ! They will try to keep it impersonal. She will try to keep herself focused on her move date. She will fight the obvious and.....
What a fun ride. I will reread it, I laughed, teared up and cheered for this sweet romantic tale.

I'm not sure I can adequately express just how terrible this cover is. I mean, look at it.

Actually, no, sorry, don't; don't look at it.

I know this is a romance novel--I didn't need the horrible cover to confirm that--but with all the awkward photo-shopping going on with this one, it's particularly bad.

Thankfully, Jill Shalvis's novels are most definitely not bad. I haven't picked up her Animal Magnetism Series, mostly because I'm a bit of an anti-animal person myself (I'm scared of dogs and cats are just...creepy? Or at least the ones in my neighborhood are. I never seem to see the cute cats of tumblr in real life...) but the synopsis of this novel captured my attention completely and I just couldn't resist to sneak a romance read in-between the sci-fi/fantasy kick I've been on.

And, seriously, Then Came You was such a treat. I inhaled it in practically a single sitting, completely besotted with Emily, Wyatt, and their myriad of problems. Emily is The One With The Plan. We all know people like this; people so set in their ways and determined to stick to a certain path that they believe will guarantee them happiness that they are completely unnerved by any curve balls. When she winds up interning for a veterinary practice in Sunshine, Idaho though, Emily is far away from L.A., the city she planned to intern in. What's more, Wyatt--the sexy doctor she had a one-night stand with a few months ago--works in Sunshine. The sparks between Wyatt and Emily haven't died down one bit since their night together, but the real question here isn't whether or not their chemistry is still blazing--it's whether or not Wyatt can get Emily to forget her plans...

Then Came You is complete with Shalvis's trademark sense of humor, sass, and laughs. Emily finds it impossible to keep a filter on her thoughts around Wyatt and, though they try for professionalism, they fail quite spectacularly. While Emily and Wyatt's relationship is the main focus of the novel, I love that Shalvis almost always writes strong sibling relationships to accompany her characters. Wyatt, the middle child squeezed between two sisters, and Emily, with her lesbian sister, are both shaped by their family ties--which I love. Moreover, their journey to love is a slow-burn. Shalvis makes the sharp distinction between insta-lust and actual love so seamlessly in all her romances, which is likely why I keep coming back for more.

If you're an animal lover of any nature--dogs, cats, horses, turtles--Then Came You is going to bring out your soft side for sure. It's impossible not to feel the passion both Emily and Wyatt feel for their job and the animals they care for, which is an unexpected surprise in a love story. Needless to say, Then Came You hit all the right notes for a lazy-day summer read and, should the urge strike me again, I'll be visiting the handsome vets of Sunshine yet again.

Look out Lucky Harbor, this series is coming to take your belt for the contemporary romance series champion. Emily is a newly graduated veterinarian, who has been granted an internship in Sunshine, Idaho. She likes things planned out and is counting the days until she can go back to L.A. She let herself lose control once at a veterinarian conference and had a one night stand with a hot guy. I'll give you three guesses as to what happens next and the first two don't count.

Wyatt is pleasantly surprised when he realizes his hot one night stand is helping him deliver a lamb. He is a genuinely good guy and you're going to find him just as irresistible as Emily. Emily has a specific life plan and worries about her dad alone in L.A., Wyatt is solidly in Sunshine and doesn't want to get his heart broken by someone who seems to have one foot out the door. Due to growing up in a situation that left him never having a say in his life choices and rootless, he firmly leaves the ball in Emily's court as to how their relationship is going to progress. This doesn't mean he doesn't encourage her, in fact, your toes will curl at his encouragement. These two together are great, they're sexy, funny, and a pleasure to read about, you know, your typical Jill Shalvis book. Usually, I describe her stories as very fluffy but this one felt a little more solid. It's still a light read but I think it was the best of the series.

Shalvis books are smooth paced stories that you suddenly find yourself devouring in one sitting; this one is no exception. It drags a smidgen in the middle where Emily's denial to accept and admit to her feelings for Wyatt get a tad repetitive but that is a small complaint. There is also, what seems to be the required, heroine mini danger moment that all Shalvis books have. It was a little forced, especially with the baddie (I'm making a ka'razy call and saying the chocolate chip baddie will somehow be redeemed a'la Sebastian St. Vincent style) but nothing that will stem your overall enjoyment. This genre's backbone is the hero and heroine's relationship and Emily and Wyatt will have your heart melting. Don't miss this newest Animal Magnetism installment.

It also looks like I'm going to resume my stalking of Jill Shalvis as I eagerly (obsessively) anticipate A.J. and Darcy's story. This is a guess on who the couple will be but I'm going to call it an educated one.

I like this author's work! She writes Feel-Good-Romantic-Comedies. If that is not a category, it should be. We can call them FGRomComs. Anyway.... her books have great characters. Neither of them are complete jerks or obviously stupid. They are both caring adults who don't go in for the damaging drama. Usually.
In the book our heroine and hero met while at a convention. "What happens at conventions, stays at conventions" Unless, of course it follows you to a small town vet clinic in the middle of nowhere.
A fun story with great characters.

Emily hasn't even started her internship but she is already counting down the days until the year is over and she can return to Los Angeles and get back to her "life plan". The last thing she expects is to stumble upon Wyatt, her unforgettable one-night-stand from a vet conference, but stumble upon him she does, since he turns out to be her supervisor.

She tries to keep things between them professional, but he is not making it easy, with his flirty smiles and the charisma oozing from his every pore, and it's not long before the two of them end up in bed again.

Unfortunately, Emily has a plan, and staying in Sunshine isn't part of it, while Wyatt has abandonment issues and isn't about to fall for a woman who already has one foot out the door.

Neither of them accounts for the feelings developing between them, however, and eventually discover that playing it safe isn't the way to happiness after all.

Light and fun story with a satisfying happily ever after ending.

The series continues with Still the One and Wyatt's sister Darcy's story.

The fifth addition to Jill Shalvis' Animal Magnetism series. Emily Stevens is out of Veterinarian School and working as an intern in Sunshine, Idaho. She wanted Los Angeles to be closer to her father but she didn't get it. So now she is counting the days until her year of internship is over so she can hit the road for LA. She didn't count on Wyatt Stone, her one night stand from a conference in Reno just three months ago. Wyatt is another veterinarian and now her supervisor. She doesn't want or need any distractions during her internship.

I've said it many times and I will say it again, Jill Shalvis can really write some awesome heroes. And Wyatt was awesome. Emily wasn't bad but I got a bit tired of her determination to leave Idaho. Wyatt had a few issues of his own but I felt he dealt with them nicely. Another wonderful series that I highly recommend to Contemporary Romance fans.

Then Came You by Jill Shalvis, Karen White (Narrator) is a 2015 Tantor Media, Inc. publication (first published 2014). I started with book 5 of the series and didn’t feel like it was a problem following the story. But characters of previous books are this one.

This is the first book in this series that I’ve read. While it was enjoyable and brought me a few laughs, the heroine became less likeable as the story unfolded. It was the push and pull that did me in. But there were cute animals…

Emily was starting as a veterinary intern in Sunshine, Idaho for a one-year term to pay off a scholarship. Alas, her life plan had been derailed as she’d hope to work off the debt nearby her dad’s home in L.A. But, at least, her sister opted to make the move with her. So, Emily showed up to the vet clinic in Sunshine only to find out one of the doctors she would be working with was none other than the handsome hunk from the one-night stand she had at a recent vet conference. Awkward…

From the beginning, Emily and Wyatt had chemistry together. They tried to keep their one night on the down low, but they couldn’t seem to keep their hands off each other, and the secret was soon out. Which wasn’t surprising as they frequently found themselves in any space that had a closed door or Wyatt’s truck.

They both shouldered emotional and financial family responsibilities. Wyatt’s two sisters lived with him in an old ‘money-pit’ farmhouse inherited from their grandmother. Wyatt worked every spare moment to repair and renovate the house. Plus, he had to reel-in his youngest sister’s wild behavior, and ensure she continued therapy for a serious injury. Emily’s sister lived with her in a rental house but did not initially help with expenses. And Emily sent money to her father for his expenses because he mostly donated his skills as a veterinarian to charity. She and her family were still recovering from her mother's death.

Wyatt had the women of Sunshine in hot pursuit of him as the ‘casserole brigade’ was often making passes and food for him. Not to mention his ex-girlfriend who left him for job elsewhere kept trying to call. This brought out feelings of jealously in Emily.

Neither Wyatt nor Emily had plans for a permanent relationship in their near future. Emily planned to leave Sunshine as soon as possible – she even marked the days off on her calendar. Wyatt’s diplomat parents moved him too many times in his youth, and now he had put roots down in Sunshine, he planned to stay put. He swore to not fall for another woman who had no plans to stay in Sunshine.

Emily’s constant wavering between wanting Wyatt and not wanting to change her already set life plan grew tiresome about 40% into the book. This was the greatest issue I had with the book and what kept me from rating it higher – it was drawn out too long in my opinion. Then Emily did something that was hard to understand, but Wyatt’s inaction was responsible for it somewhat .

At least there were plenty of cute animal scenes with Emily adopting or rescuing injured or unwanted animals around her home. And there were cute animals in and around the vet office. However, there are scenes with animals that were deliberately hurt. So, that might be a trigger for some.

A suspense element unfolded later in the story that was predictable from the earlier hints, but it didn’t do much to keep me interested.

Overall, it was enjoyable but forgettable. Had I been reading an eBook instead of listening to an audio, I would have skimmed pages in the last half of the book. There are two other books in the series I may try, since some reviewers cite this book as their least favorite.

2023 Re-read: Boy, have my tastes changed. I originally rated this 5 stars and it’s lucky to get 3 on this go around.

Original review:

Wyatt. The end.

Oh, boy. I loved this book! I only discovered the wonder that is Jill Shalvis a few weeks ago, because I have apparently been living under a big stupid rock or something. I read Simply Irresistible and fell in love! I knew I'd found something special, and apparently thousands of other people had found her first!

So as soon as I saw Then Came You on NetGalley I requested that puppy as fast as my finger would click! When I got the e-mail saying I'd been approved, I actually shouted "YES!! in my very quiet office. People gave me looks. It's okay, they're growing accustomed to my outbursts.

Anyway, back to the book. I was actually nervous! Thinking "Dear God! What if it was a fluke? What if that first book was amazing and this one stinks? Please, please don't let it stink!" IT. DOES. NOT. STINK.

You guys.

WYATT.

Alright, alright. I'm getting to it.

Emily is so much like me it's uncanny. She finds comfort in lists, plans, organization, and knowing what to expect. She is goal-oriented and doesn't deviate from The Plan. And what is The Plan? Complete this internship in the middle of Nowheresville and then move to Los Angeles to be a Vet in the city of her dreams. So when she shows up the first day of her internship, she's completely gobsmacked to learn that the person she is shadowing is the very same Vet who she'd had a torrid one night stand with at a conference in Reno. The one night she'd gone plan-less. He was irresistible and she was weak, they agreed on one night of fun. So seeing Wyatt again, much less working along side him every day for the next year, was utterly unexpected.

They both acknowledge what happened, agree that it was a one-time occurrence, and plan to have a strictly professional working relationship. But what is it they say about best laid plans...?

They have an electric mutual attraction and suddenly saying is far easier than doing. They start forming a bond and relationship that nobody (including me) really knows how to put a label on. Whatever you'd call it, it puts a smile on my face for nearly the entire book. Wyatt had me in a pretty constant state of mush.

Just as the two of them are both beginning to develop something deeper and refusing to talk about or analyze it, Emily is presented with an opportunity to fast track The Plan. She wants nothing more than for Wyatt to ask her to stay. Wyatt doesn't want to put her in a position to give up her dream. Both are stubborn and unwilling to give, especially for something that they've never said was more than a good time.

Now, as readers of Romance, we know that the majority of the time there is going to be a happy ending. I know it with just about every book and I knew it with this one. Except when Jill, the evil wench, made me not know! I sat with tears in my eyes, reading unblinking, clenching my fists to the point that my husband looked at me and asked me if I was alright. I told him I didn't know yet.

This book was perfectly executed. The dialogue flowed effortlessly, the characters were relatable and I connected to all of them, and the story kept me totally engrossed and interested from start to finish. It kept a smile on my face and then put tears in my eyes. It made me laugh out loud and then made me hot under the collar. It was beautiful. I cannot wait for y'all to meet Wyatt and Emily!

I could have spend the day with a bad boy, or a duke, or even demons, but I choose a sweet guy who love animals instead. I had a great time ;p I choose to reread this book because Jill Shalvis is always a sure value and it's always a pleasure to see again Peanut, the parrot with the potty mouth, Gertie the quiet St-Bernard and yeah, let's not forget the sexy Connelly brothers ;p

Sunshine, Idaho was never part of the plan for vet student Emily Stevens, but school is expensive and when life throw you a curve ball, like a relative's illness, death and other members of your family count on you to take care of the bills, some people might have to put their goals on hold for a time. For her first day of internship at Belle Haven, Emily didn't think she would be assisting her one and only one-night stand. Dr. Wyatt Stone is gonna be her supervisor for a year so she wants them to go back to being strangers. He find the situation amusing but agree because he like his job and his life as it is. As a kid, he lived all over the World and he's ready to put down roots, which is not part of Emily's plan either. She wants a stress-free life and need to organize everything, but her heart is in the right place and she can't help rescue all the animals that cross her path. Currently living with his two sisters with whom he fight like cats and dogs, Wyatt may think his heart is not involve in everything he do but whether if it's with the creatures with four paws or two legs, he's soft-hearted and a steady guy you can always count on. But when attraction is undeniable, things doesn't stay professional for too long :p

"Sometimes the best things are unplanned," he said quietly.

I can always count on this author to give me a good romance but she always give me more than that with interaction and relationship between the MC and other characters. While Emily's sister was a great one, it's really the hero's sisters and their great but less than perfect connection that really charmed me.

" He glared at her, but she was unaffected. It was hard to intimidate someone who'd seem him wear a Superman cape to bed until he was eight."

With Then Came You, I met two caring person dedicated to the animals's health and hapiness, I sighed watching them fall in love, I shed a tear for a biker and his inguana and I even learned about turtles's mating habits.

With Jill Shalvis, there's always the fun factor but there's also sweetness and emotions, but it's never overwhelming. Her stories leave me with a feeling of well-being, a temporary calmness that I treasure.

An amazingly awesome book. I loved, loved, loved it. One of Jill's sexiest, imo, and so funny, but with a lot of emotion, too. She surprised me a few times, made me growl and laugh and smile. :-) Good stuff! Highly recommend to anyone who enjoys contemporary romance.

I really enjoy this author. Her books have gotten a bit cookie cutter, but they are consistent. We know we will have an enjoyable read and sometimes ... sometimes she WOW's us. This wasn't a WOW, but it was good. I enjoyed it. Maybe I'll get a WOW next time? We can hope.

Happy Reading!!

"In the meantime, who's concentrating on you? Say you need something. A spider removal, someone to hold you after a bad dream, help you with your car. Or maybe just some company, seeing as you're new in town ... If you were mine, I'd want to do those things for you. Just for future reference."

Such a sweet addition to the Animal Magnetism series! Her books are always funny, and perfect to end a reading slump. As pretty much always with Jill Shalvis, I absolutely LOVED the hero. Let's face it, who can resist an adorable idiot who's a great guy, has an addiction to funny T-Shirts, and saves animals for a living...

No surprises here you guys – if you’re a fan of Jill Shalvis then you’re going to want to read this book.

Shalvis consistently writes romance that isn’t too angsty or heavy and has the perfect amount of sweet and sexy... and Then Came You fits perfectly. While I’m a diehard fan of her Lucky Harbor series, her Animal Magnetism series is a close second on my list. In book 4, we meet Emily. She’s on her way to Idaho for her veterinary internship and Sunshine, Idaho is most definitely nothing like the LA office she was hoping to get placed at. Upon her arrival she’s immediately shoved out the door to help a sheep who is giving birth and runs into none other than her one time Reno fling… Wyatt.

So what happens when you find out you accidentally slept with your new boss... and it was amazing?

Neither is looking for anything permanent, Emily… because she’s already counting down the days until she can head home to take care of her father and Wyatt because he’s not going to get burned by a relationship again. (People can’t leave you if you never let them in to begin with right?)

Both decide to keep things professional, but they can’t deny their chemistry. I actually really loved Emily. I totally loved her awkwardness, but I think my favorite parts were when she just couldn’t deny her physical reactions to Wyatt. I definitely found myself chuckling at times. And Wyatt… *fans self*

He was built all big and rugged and tough. Great eyes, great smile, both of which advertised that he was up for anything, especially trouble."

Sign me up. Seriously, I think I need to find myself a veterinarian… I mean how Shalvis makes some of the things that these guys do seem sexy… I don’t know, but it’s a talent. But above all of that, these two were just sweet together and I loved all the different aspects of their relationship that we were shown…

“Was I loud?”
Wyatt leaned over her and kissed her worried mouth. “I don’t know.”
“How could you not know, you were right here.”
He grinned. “Well, the first time, your legs were around my ears so I couldn’t hear.”

There’s a few small minor plots to add to the romance aspect of this story… Emily is living with her sister, who is of course dealing with some drama of her own, which adds a layer to the story. But there is also something a little more serious and is a bit of a mystery that happens as you get into the book. If you’re like me, you’ll have that mystery figured out pretty early on, but if you’re like me again, it won’t detract from the enjoyment of the story in any way.

I’ve said it before… and I’ll say it again. Shalvis is a master at what she does and it’s rare that I don’t find myself caught up in the relationships she crafts. Then Came You is the perfect summer read – light on drama and heavy on the romance. Make sure you find this one when it’s released in July!

Thank you to Penguin/Berkley Romance for the advanced copy in exchange for my honest thoughts!

One thing you can always count on in a Jill Shalvis novel, lots of love and caring: that's just for the animals. This trip to Sunshine, Idaho we meet the new intern who will be at Belle Haven Animal Center for the next year. Her name is Emily Stevens, she's from Los Angeles and was really hoping to do her internship in Beverly Hills. Didn't happen. Karma can be a bitch sometimes. Emily has a notebook dedicated to "The Plan" which is actually her life laid out on paper. Three hundred and sixty four days and she'll be on her way to Beverly Hills, the next step of The Plan.

Belle Haven is an extremely busy animal hospital run by Dell, Adam and Brady. If you have read earlier Animal Magnetism books in the series, you know them well. Wyatt Stone has been friends with the brothers since childhood and has joined the practice working as a vet. When Emily arrives he is helping a sheep give birth and Emily finds herself in the midst of it, to the point of being elbow deep in sheep in her new first day on the job suit. Suddenly in the muck and hay and sheep Emily realizes that Wyatt is her one and only one night stand that occurred at the one and only Vet Conference she ever attended in Reno. Of course, Wyatt recognizes her and for added fun he will be her mentor for her time in Sunshine. She quickly states her intentions, Reno never happened and their relationship will be strictly professional. Wyatt agrees with a big old smirky smile on his face.

I love all of Jill Shalvis's books, but her Animal Magnetism series has a special place in my heart. The stories about the variety of pets and wildlife is so entertaining. Lady the female Bull Mastiff who turned out to be a male after some strange behavior started occurring. Gertie the bloodhound who lives at the clinic and of course Peanut the parrot that shouts out occasional cuss words. Both Wyatt and Emily have family issues they have to face, but they just can't keep their hands off each other. This book was pure entertainment from start to finish. I highly recommend it and if you haven't read the previous books, your missing a lot of laughter, romance and fun.

I received this eBook from the publisher and NetGalley for an honest review.

5 amazing I'm-in-awe-of-this-author-and-would-become-lesbian-for-her stars!

Dear Mrs. Shalvis. You pierce my soul. I'm half agony, half hope. How can you constantly write novels like this one? Is it possible that you will continue to write like this?

Please, no matter what you do, stay true to your funny, hilarious, sweet, entertaining writing style.

This is the story of Dr. Sexy, aka Vet Doc Wyatt Stone and Emily Stevens, who starts her intership at the vet-clinic in Idaho, Sunshine. The story doesn't disappoint from the start, where the reader can read about Emily starting her first day there and noticing that her supervisor, Wyatt, is her One-Night-Stand from a few months before on a conference. Is there a better way to start a story?

I loved both main characters to pieces.
Both were strong and real characters, and although there was much banter, jokes, fun, and I don't know what else entertaining factors, they both had issues. Jill Shalvis found the perfect balance of funny and edgy, just like she always does.
Oh, my heart melts when I think about Wyatt. Mostly I loved about him, that he was easy-going, laid back, had a wide sense of humour but still pulled of some major Alpha-moves. Can you ask for more?
Emily was a funny and very likable heroine, and like a classic Shalvis-heroine, the reader was able to identify with her in a "I love my cookies, but - wow Wyatt why are you so hot that I want to eat you up?" way.
Their relationship developed in a believable way, with both of them being overwhelmed by their chemistry, but both of them honest enough not to make a big potential conflict of it.
They were really made for each other, and I as the reader could see in a detailed way what made them so irresistible to each other.

The secondary characters were great, espeacilly Sara and Darcy. Some scenes and dialogues really made me laugh out loud, they were so good.

And the animals! Normally I don't really care for the animals and pets in novels, but this time they were so adorable... Of course it takes Jill Shalvis to make me notice the cuteness of little dogs and cats and even parrots.

And not to mention the plot and storyline. It was perfect, a blend of everything that makes a light contemporary romance worth reading, but without being boring. There were some unexpected twists, espeacilly at the end, that made it even more exciting to read.

Recommending this to everyone in the mood for a mix of lightness, humour, hotness, great story and entertaining characters.

Then Came You
4 Stars

When Emily Stevens arrives at the Belle Haven clinic in Sunshine, Idaho, she is interested in one thing only - finishing her year-long veterinary internship and moving back to Los Angeles. Little does she know that the best laid plans are often sent awry when she meets her new supervisor, Wyatt Stone - the one-night stand she never thought to see again...

This is one of those rare series where the later books are better than the earlier ones. The characters are engaging, the romance is steamy and the small time vibe is charming.

Wyatt, aka Dr. Sexy, certainly lives up to his nickname and his chemistry with Emily is off the charts. The two don’t seem able to keep their hands of each other and their banter is only icing on the cake. The main difficulty lies in their inability to commit, but this is, thankfully, resolved without too much angst.

The mini-suspense plot adds an extra layer of tension to the story, which is, nonetheless, solidly in the contemporary romance genre.

All in all, a thoroughly entertaining read and I’m looking forward to reading AJ and Darcy’s book next.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

If there’s a Jill Shalvis book I can read early, you can bet I won’t miss it. She is an author I can return to again and again, knowing that she’ll put a smile on my face and give me all the warm fuzzies. Her romances are always what I’m looking for and need: heartwarming, funny, endearing, and sexy. There is nothing quite like a guaranteed happy ending, and Jill Shalvis writes some of the best of them. While I do think she relies too heavily on the no-strings-attached romance plot, I can’t fault her characters or their chemistry. Whatever couple she throws at me, I know I’ll root for them.

Then Came You is the 5th book in her Animal Magnetism series. It’s hard to choose between those books and the ones in Lucky Harbor, but there’s something about a small country town full of hot guys that charms me more than a small coastal town full of hot guys. It must be the southern gentleman thing, which I’ve always been a sucker for. Lucky Harbor is probably quirkier, but Animal Magnetism feels more lived in. In this book we meet Wyatt and Emily for the first time; he’s a veterinarian along with characters in the previous books, and she’s a city girl who will now be interning in “lovely” Sunshine, Idaho. Little does she know that her boss is none other than her first and only one-night-stand from three months ago. Although the attraction is as strong as ever, Wyatt isn’t a part of Emily’s life plan, and she vows that what happened in Reno will stay in Reno. Riiiiight.

What immediately stood out to me about Wyatt and Emily’s chemistry is their banter. It’s some of the wittiest Shalvis has written and superbly entertaining. Wyatt can’t help but to tease Emily, especially when she’s being serious and stubborn, and she tends to give him easy ammo by blurting things that would be best kept to herself. He had me cracking up with his words, but being inside Emily’s head was a hoot. She’s funny and normal, and I could relate to her OCD-ness. Here are some great gems between the lovebirds:
We’re going to need rules.”
He grinned. “Like?”
“No. No smiling! These aren’t fun rules.”
“Damn.”

“I really did totally instigate this.”
“Yeah,” he said with a grin. “I loved it.”
“Oh my God. I took advantage of you.”
“Uh huh. It was hot.”

“Was I loud?”
Wyatt leaned over her and kissed her worried mouth. “I don’t know.”
“How could you not know, you were right here.”
He grinned. “Well, the first time, your legs were around my ears, so I couldn’t hear.”

“Want to kiss it and make it all better?” he asked.
“Yes.” She visibly shook herself. “No! You’re insatiable.”
“Pot, meet Kettle.”

These two had a lot of obvious chemistry, both in and out of the bedroom. They’re passionate about their jobs and animals, it’s just they each think they want two separate things. Growing up, Wyatt’s parents had him and his sisters moving constantly, not only from state to state but from country to country as well. He’s now ready to settle down, to continue to build roots in Sunshine. Emily, on the other hand, imagines herself at a veterinarian hospital in the city, so she can be close to her father and also have enough money to pay the bills, a luxury her parents weren’t afforded. When deeper feelings start coming between them, both are too stubborn to say anything: Wyatt for fear of taking away Emily’s choice like his always was, and Emily for fear that he doesn’t want her to stay. Despite their doubts, there is never any heavy drama, and the tone always stays light and sweet. We know their stupidity won’t last long. :)

All in all, Then Came You is another one of Jill Shalvis’ fun romances. She knows how to write swoony, alpha heroes as well as anyone, and I’d rank Wyatt with his easygoing charm, protective personality, and sexy one-liners up there with my favorite Shalvis guys. (Bonus: he wears glasses.) I’m crossing my fingers that Darcy, Wyatt’s younger sister, and AJ, her personal trainer, will be up next. Their relationship definitely intrigues me!

Emily has her entire life mapped out, finish her Veterinary intern ship and get a well paying job in LA so she can take care of her father and sister. The plan didn't include spending a year in the middle of nowhere working at a country practise but it's part of the terms for her scholarship so she'll do her time before getting out of there as quickly as possible. Things get a little bit awkward when she realises that her new boss, Wyatt, is the same gorgeous guy she had a one night stand with at a veterinary conference. It doesn't help that she still finds him insanely attractive, especially since he seems to return the sentiment, but she's determined that nothing and nobody will derail her plans for the future.

I always know I can turn to Jill Shalvis when I'm looking for something that is light hearted and fun. She is definitely one of my go to authors for contemporary romance and she never fails to leave me with a smile on my face. I love her Lucky Harbor books but I actually think the Animal Magnetism series is my favourite, any animal lover is sure to be charmed by the multitude of cute and crazy animal sidekicks this series has to offer and I love how authentic the scenes at the clinic feel. It's also nice to catch up with familiar faces along with getting glimpses of future couples and I'm very excited to start the next book which happens to be A.J. and Darcy's story.

I absolutely loved the romance between Emily and Wyatt, they have great chemistry from the beginning but the emotional connection and friendship between them builds slowly as they're working side by side. They have a lot in common and I found it completely believable that they'd fall head over heels fairly quickly. At first I struggled to understand Emily's plan and why she was so desperate to move back to LA but it quickly becomes clear that she's never had much financial stability in her life and she feels responsible for both her father and her sister's well being. She puts money and success above her own happiness because she feels like she has so many obligations. The longer she spends in Sunshine the more she starts to fall in love with not just Wyatt but also the rest of her co workers and the town in general. She starts making friends and collecting her own menagerie of animals and it's pretty obvious to everyone except her that she's where she's meant to be.

Wyatt was great, not only is he sexy as hell but he's a genuinely lovely guy, he has a great sense of humour, is good with animals, cares about his friends and family and wants to settle down. His childhood was spent constantly moving around the world with his diplomat parents and all he ever wanted was to find a place to call home. He has a history of choosing the wrong women and nobody ever seems to put him first so the last thing he needs is to fall for a woman with one foot already out the door but everything else about Emily is perfect for him. These two had a really sweet romance and the sex was smoking (I do love a couple who are a little adventurous) and I loved every minute of it.

This series just gets better and better and I can't recommend Jill Shalvis' writing highly enough. She has never let me down and I can guarantee her books will leave you with a smile on her face.

This is Wyatt and Emily's story. Emily is an intern who finds out that the vet at the clinic she's interning at is her first one night stand she was hoping to never see again. Turns out, though he doesn't fit in her grand plan for her life, he is exactly what she needs.

While this was not my favorite in the series so far, Jill Shalvis constantly comes through with just the right amount of yummy, funny and heart to ensure you will enjoy the ride. Emily and Wyatt had a lot of heat, considering Emily could not keep her hands off of Wyatt to save her life. Unfortunately, I just didn’t feel the chemistry and the love. Wyatt was a very good guy, but he just never expressed his feelings to Emily and it was difficult as a reader to see exactly why these two were meant to be together. Why was Emily different from Caitlin, who we find out was Wyatt’s recent ex-fiancé who chooses to leave the small town of Sunshine? Does Wyatt fall in and out of love pretty easily? I just wish there was something that stood out to me about these two characters that solidified their reasons to be together. It doesn’t have to exist in every book I suppose. It just felt like an average couple, which we probably all are…but I do like every couple and every story to feel magically special in some way. Ultimately, I liked the story, I liked the characters well enough, and I’ll always read Jill. I just wished for a little bit more zsa zsa zsu!

On a side note, a few personal things I’m a little over: the fact that there’s always someone in this series who has one foot out the door. The references to “good parts” or “lady town”. Not all women refer to those things in the same way, so it sort of takes me out of the story since it’s in almost every book with every heroine.

Things get a little awkward when Veterinary intern, Emily winds up in the small town of Sunshine, Idaho and has to work under the sexy man she once had a one night stand with. It seems that Wyatt remembers the night well because, he too feels the heat crawling up the back of his neck when he realizes that it is indeed her.

In the fifth instalment to the Animal Magnetism series, Jill Shalvis delivers yet another fun and sweet story for readers to devour. There’s something special about Emily and Wyatt’s romance. For one, the two of them already know the most intimate places on each other’s body, so the intense chemistry is there. However, their emotional attachment is still lacking a little bit.

Emily and Wyatt must decide if they want to indulge in this firestorm of emotions within them or be professional and stay out of each other’s way. Unfortunately, working together puts them in close proximity and it’s just a matter of time when the sparks fly.

I enjoyed this book. Shalvis never fails to bring me out of the comfort of my reading spot and take me on a little adventure that is filled with heart and humor. I was in a minor reading slump before this book and found that these small town romances offer something that not a lot of other books do. They focus on the character’s emotions so well that it becomes refreshing and I found that after reading this, I had a brand new slate and could go back to reading without any trouble. I can always count of Shalvis to get me out of a reading slump.

REVIEW:
I just have to say that I am SO in love with Jill Shalvis and her books.

Then Came You is book 5 in her Animal Magnetism series and I am so in love with Wyatt.
Who doesn’t love a hottie in glasses that is good with animals and even better with people. That is until it comes to the people he wants in his life. Wyatt’s biggest weakness is his fear of not letting people have their own choices when in reality telling someone how you feel will make all the difference in the world about their decisions.

Emily is feisty almost to a fault. Emily lives by the rule of “I must always have a plan” but you know what they say about the best laid plans right??? I did truly enjoy watching her walls slowly crack and tumble down as she learns what real life is about.
I really enjoyed these two even if at times I wanted to slap them both. I think that a certain Parrot, a new puppy and turtle did try to steal the show at times. But both Wyatt & Emily stole the cake and my heart.

If you are a fan of Ms. Shalvis you will love this book. It is classic Jill Shalvis funny, heartbreaking, laugh out loud, sexy, horn honking, tension filled makes you want to keep turning the page reading story. So make sure you get your copy and find out why Sunshine Idaho is so nice.

I enjoy Jill Shalvis' Lucky Harbor so much but I never really try her others. Well, I tried the first book in THIS series and didn't like it much. However, I was still in the contemporary romance mood, and I thought why not pick up a latest one, hopefully it was better from the first book.

Well, on one hand, I adored the animal scenes. I swear, Ms. Shalvis writes great animals scene. With Emily and Wyatt both working at Belle Haven, dealing with animals, there were plenty of them to make my heart went all fuzzy.

I also loved the sibling relationship. Both Wyatt (and his sisters) and Emily (with her sister) had great sibling relationship here. I loved reading about Wyatt and how his sisters frustrated him (point for a male character with two sisters, by the way). I loved reading how Sara challenged Emily about her plan.

Unfortunately, while the romance was cute in the beginning, but Emily's "I have a plan, being in Sunshine is not a plan, I am going to stick with my plan and will not start any more sexual encounter with Dr. Sexy -- but then she breaks it because apparently Wyatt wakes up her inner slut" thing becomes too repetitive after awhile. I got bored and started skimming after having to deal with it for 3/4 book.

It wasn't a bad book, it just didn't wow me much. Having said that, I might try the NEXT book of this series (even if I'm not sure I want to go back and read book #2 - #4) because it's about Wyatt's sister and his best friend, and it seems intriguing.

Finished this book at 4:00 this morning. What's better than sleep? A Jill Shalvis book! I loved this story (not that I don't love all of her books). I loved the reality of the relationship that neither Wyatt or Emily would say what they really wanted out of the relationship either out of fear or assuming what the other one wanted. I loved that Ms. Shalvis didn't make the sisters on either side so sugary sweet. They were real and ornery and outspoken. I did shed some tears and I did laugh out loud while reading this book. So now I'm back to impatiently waiting for the next Jill Shalvis book to come out. Sigh.

I really didn't think I'd ever do the Trifecta Books (sounds, cover and title must all …be cute/sexy /etc) challenge. I mean it would really have to be those three things at the same time for me to do it and it's very subjective. So I just went along and did whatever challenges that worked for me when it finally happened, the trifecta book!

I know...I was shocked too!

But it indeed happened. I was very pleasantly surprised. I love the idea of meeting up with what you truly believed would be a one-night-stand. Just think about it. How crazy would that be? And many be a little embarrassing too.

To round up the trifecta is the cover and title. I really loved both. The cover with the couple and dog works for the story and the title...speaks for itself.

All three things worked perfectly for this book. I'm so glad to have finally read it. Yes finally, did you see how behind I've become on this series? I'm so naughty. Not to worry I'm trying to catch up.

I really loved both Wyatt & Emily. Both are really good people with a few issues. Well, Emily have the majority of those issues but that didn't stop us from liking her, only made us feel sad for her at times.

Emily loves being a vet but her main goal is to make money, lots of it. That's why she wants to work in Beverly Hills, not Idaho! But you have to do what you have to do especially when someone else pays for your scholarship.

Now don't judge her harshly until you read the story there is much more to it then just wanting to make money to be rich, that doesn't even factor in to it. Like I said you really have to read it and learn much more about her.

It will take Emily a little while to realize what is the most important thing in her life but she will.

I really loved Wyatt! He's a great character, you'll also love his crazy family! His sisters scare me. Not sure I really like his parents though. Not what I'd call overly loving. But besides that he grew up being a caring, loving person.

This is such a good story. One that I was very happy to read. I really enjoyed it and was glad to have been back in Sunshine, Idaho. There are only two more books in this series and I can't wait to read them too!

Posted at Yummy Men & Kick Ass Chicks

Julie: Then Came You is the fifth book in Jill Shalvis’ Animal Magnetism series. I am a late comer to this series, having started with the last book, Rumor Has It. Anne loved that book so much I knew I just had to read it. And after reading it I can see why it enchanted her the way it did. I may not have adored it as much as she did but it did draw me in enough to want to continue with the series and to one day go back and read from it the beginning. In this latest installment, we are back at the animal hospital to witness two doctors as they meet “again” and fall in love.

Anne: As Grif would say, “Jill, you never disappoint.” Well, it would be Kate, not Jill, but you get the idea. I get excited every time I know a new Jill Shalvis book is coming out. When I actually get it, I wriggle with joy and I want to read it right away. This series set in a small town, with animals, is wonderful. There is a new vet, Wyatt and a new vet intern, Emily, along with all the other folks I know and love.

I like Wyatt. He lives with his sisters and I find them fascinating. He is caring and giving and strong. I do find it annoying that he won’t express an opinion because he doesn’t want to influence the other person, since he wasn’t given choices when he was young.

Julie: I absolutely loved Wyatt’s relationship with his sisters. Some of my favorite scenes in the book involve him and his sisters even though I did find them eerily similar to Tara and Chloe in Jill’s Lucky Harbor series. But those two women are fantastic characters so to see their ‘twins-of-sort’ in this series was no bother. There is such love and admiration there and it’s all hidden under biting words and snarky remarks. Their scenes together were a lot of fun to read.

I agree with you about Wyatt. As much as I loved Wyatt, and I did really like him, I was also a bit frustrated at times with his incapability of telling people exactly how he feels and what he thinks. Yes, I understand the ‘why’. I know it’s because of his childhood and how his parents carted him around to wherever they felt like going, but c’mon. You’re an adult now. I just thought that by now he would understand how choices are really made and how they really work.

Anne: The private scenes with Emily and Wyatt together are just ridiculous enough; they are funny. They do work well together and treat each other well. I also adore the backdrop of their families.

I understand Emily. Sometimes a person needs to have a somewhat rigid plan to get through hard things in their life. She does what normal, good people do. They do the best they can, make the best of what they have. I do this myself, focus on the tasks and stuff down the emotions. It’s easier to live in your head than your emotions. And sometimes when you feel so strongly after holding it all back for so long, it overflows. Emily can’t stop herself and how she feels about Wyatt. It’s not in her plan. But she IS with him.

Julie: I am also someone who has trouble when “the plan” isn’t followed so I did understand Emily. Sometimes we just need the other person to say specific words to make our feelings real. And when we don’t hear what we need, we don’t have the fuel to change ‘the plan’. I liked Emily a lot. She was so cute! And I too really enjoyed their scenes together.

As much as I really enjoyed Emily and Wyatt, what I did not appreciate was Evan. I didn’t find him necessary to the advancement of the story and often wondered what he was even doing there.

Anne: That whole part of the plot was not needed, other than to give the story something other than a sexy romance, with two people working out their various personal issues with their family and friends in the mix. I guess overall it was maybe a little too real life, in that respect, since there was not huge drama, other than the internal issues both Wyatt and Emily faced. I don’t mean to minimize anyone’s issues but they weren’t life-threatening. They were more like preconceived notions formed as children which they had both outgrown as adults, once the ideas were examined.

Julie: You are exactly right. The whole Evan plot felt like it was thrown in there just to add drama that someone felt the story was missing. But that person wasn’t me and I really felt it did nothing for the story except take time away from Emily and Wyatt. I don’t know why sometimes people think there has to be a ‘big bad’ in every book. Sometimes just the issues inside a hero or heroine’s head are enough of an obstacle for the couple to overcome.

That being said, I don’t feel like every single scene in a book needs to advance the story to be effective. Jill wrote quite a few scenes in this book that did not add to the plot or bring the story forward. What they did do is add a layer to the character the scene featured. I loved this! I felt these scenes could have been seen as ‘slower’ moments in the story but for me, they added so much! They helped make Emily and Wyatt so much more real for me.

Anne: I completely agree. Not every scene needs to advance the plot. It is great to add depth to the characters. OK, I have to say this. There were just a few sentences of Grif and just that made me shiver with pleasure. I’m not sure I will ever get over Grif. A glimpse of him was my favorite part of the book! Ridiculous but I’m that attached to him.

Julie: It’s great that you are still so attached to Grif! It means that Jill did a great job with the hero from the last book. She really does write great heroes and heroines.

Anne: This book was a great addition to the series. It added some new characters to this wonderful little town. It sets up things for possible future couples with people about whom I definitely want to know more. I’m thinking of you, AJ. And any book by Jill has the sweet sexyness and humor which are so satisfying.

4 stars

Julie: I’m with you. Then Came You was a really sweet book. It has a similar vibe to Forever and a Day, my all time favorite Jill Shalvis book, so I was all over that. Jill really does have a knack when it comes to writing this genre. All of her characters feel like people you could easily meet at the grocery store or at work and her stories feel like tellings of events anyone could go through. Her books are relatable with a side of fun and fantasy and Then Came You fits that description perfectly.
