A virulent plague straight out of the Middle Ages, it put millions into their graves but they did not stay there. When the sun goes down, they rise to feed on the blood of the living and spread the terrible pandemic. As the thirsty dead fill the streets, one man will exterminate them.
Jack Hamlyn (Tim Curran) blew me away with this release. The story, the setting, the ravenous night haunters blowing across the wastes of his decaying hometown. Want a fresh take on vampires? Look no further!
"Luke brought the four-pound sledge down and nailed the stake square. The impact drove it all the way through and into the mattress beneath. What happened then was something Luke had never seen in any movie: Cliff split right open. From his sternum to his belly he opened right up and what was in there was some yellow, fibrous tissue that was like no human flesh he had ever seen before. It almost looked like fiberglass insulation or the guts of a freshly-carved pumpkin: yellow and seedy and stringy." -Jack Hamlyn
What a rush, reading Vampirus side-by-side with the Corona virus crisis. "When you gonna get to me? Is it just a matter of time, Corona?"
Jack Hamlyn is a pen name for Tim Curran. My first experience with Jack/Tim, but not my last. Why? Vampirus scared me silly. Hamlyn's prose combined deep dread, a gloomy atmosphere, with vivid technicolor gore. Inspired by Richard Matheson's "I am Legend", Hamlyn weaves a Wisconsin winter terror tale for the ages.
Vampirus ended like the first book in a trilogy, leaving me stranded in the snow: frozen under the Stygian spell, spectral shadows of Lovecraft's Old Ones thrust tentacles through my brain's blood barrier, wriggling down my spine.
Essential addition to any vampire horror collection.
Finally! I have always had a special place in my heart for vampire tales ever since reading DRACULA as a child. Through out the years,I've discovered a few gems, but mostly have been so disappointed for the most part. Stephen King, Ray Garton, Richard Laymon, have written the best in the genre, and they all stand the test of time and of course I AM LEGEND by Matheson is the great standard in my opinion. This fantastic book harkens back to that wonderful gem. Amazing atmosphere, incredible pacing, full of dread and the fear of the unknown and the agony of losing your loved ones only to have them come back to prey upon the living and haunt your every moment. After reading so many so called "Horror" novels over the years, I find it hard to feel true suspense while reading them. BUT, that was not the case this time. All the way through VAMPIRUS, I noticed that I kept tensing up and sometimes even holding my breath! The sense of dread Jack Hamlyn was able to conjure up for this tale, was so refreshing and fun to read. If I could give a 6 star rating I would. It's that good. Anyway, I don't want to give away any spoilers, so let me just say that if you love a good old-fashioned scary vampire novel, this is it!
