Hellions Angels #1

Mister Hockey

Rate this book
For fans of Icebreaker—sparks fly between a hockey player with a dirty mouth and an awkward bookworm in this spicy hockey romance.

Jed West is Mr. Hockey: the captain of the NHL’s latest winning team and the hottest player on the ice—at least, according to Breezy Angel, who’s been drooling over Jed at games for years. He plays a starring role in her most toe-curling fantasies. But dirty dreams don’t come true, right?

Everything changes when Jed saunters through the doors of Breezy’s library as a last-minute special guest for a summer reading event. Their chemistry is immediate and hot enough to thaw an entire rink in record time. But things grow complicated when Breezy decides to hide the fact that she’s Jed’s biggest fan. After all, her feelings for him are genuine, so who has to know? She’s not the only one with secrets, though, and Jed’s could change the course of his career forever.

Can this hockey hotshot and quirky bookworm find the courage to be honest with each other or will their love story be over before it can truly begin?

2.5 rounded up

writing: punchy, conversational | plot: tried me | ending: felt like I just finished boxing with Mike Tyson

my opinion

Not since The Love Wager have I been so in the trenches trying to enjoy a book. The writing style is right up my alley, and there were several LOL moments. HOWEVER, there were also several "what in the sweet buttery hell is THIS?" moments. Every time I thought the story had found its groove, the author chucked a proverbial cringe grenade into the mix that made me want to shotput my Kindle into a different dimension. JUST LET ME LOVE YOU.

And similar to TLW, the FMC tried me. This was peak millennial core. She "self-identified as a Ravenclaw" and unironically wore skull and crossbones leggings. I wouldn't have been surprised if she popped up with a "it's wine o'clock somewhere" t-shirt. I've read a lot of crazy stuff in spicy books but the FMC saying "whenever she fantasized about a guy putting ranch dressing in her hidden valley" makes everything else seem vanilla.

Also, these books were originally indie published in 2018 but it looks like they're being republished with cartoon covers amidst the popularity of hockey romances. I'm not sure if the story has been edited as well, but I'm curious to see if the ratings will improve considering how feral the girlies are about this sub-genre now. Perhaps Lia Riley was just head of her time.

FYI this is a very short book (~200 pages) so insta-love does occur.

pros and cons

pros: i liked the writing style, some funny moments

cons: VERY questionable jokes/sayings, lots of millennial cringe (and I usually love the cringe), FMC was weird

There's LMAOOOOO funny. There's ahahahaha funny. And then there's Ha. Ha. *stink face*

This is Ha. Ha. *stink face*

Despite being novella-length, it was a challenge to finish Mister Hockey. Whether it was the terrible 'banter' or the surface-level exploration of insecurities that have been done to death, or any of the other reasons why I hated this and genuinely don't have the patience to outline in detail, I'm frankly shocked this got traditionally published.

Also, how about we stop writing characters in their 20's and 30's who speak like they were alive during WW1?

I’ve never wrote a review on Goodreads before. This book was so bad I had to jump on and warn people not to waste their time. The writing was chaotic at best. Confusing at times, like whole chapters were missing from the book. I feel like I was left out of important information that could’ve helped transformed the “story”. Story being used loosely as the story line was about as dry as stale bread. This book felt like it was just something to put out into the world to declare that this author “wrote a book”. That fact that the authors declares that readers of icebreaker would love this book is a blatant lie. The only this book has similar to icebreaker is that it involved a hockey player. The smut along with the entirety of this book was mediocre.

Mister Hockey by Lia Riley was a fun, sweet and entertaining read.

This was one of those reads I wasn't sure I was going to enjoy. It took time for me to get into and some parts I could have done without but overall Mister Hockey ended up being an enjoyable read.
The storyline was well written, the characters Jed and Breezy were likable and they entertained me with their antics.

In closing, Mister Hockey is a good start to the Hellions Angels series and I'm looking forward to reading the next book.

Mister Hockey sounded so promising. I mean I love hockey and I love Riley... so this had to be a winner right?
I wish.
This is not bad by all means. But great it ain't either. I know I expected a lot. I mean its hockey and Riley... but ... I know Riley has done better.
My biggest issue: it's way to cliche. I mean basically, most cliche points were ticked here.
The romance is totally insta everything. The story line is extremely predictable and most characters feel a bit formulaic
Yet, it is also written by Riley. So it is well written and I found myself oddly absorbed in it. I guess it's a bit of guilty pleasure?
I mean I know this is very cliche, it's cutesy and all that, but I still enjoyed reading it
I blame it on Jed, who despite everything is an awesome male lead. Hot, sweet, kind hearted, a great guy and a hockey player.. oh and the right kind of alpha. What else could one possibly want? Exactly.
And while we at it, let me just admit this, I am totally looking forward to Neve's story. And yeah I know it might be just as cliche and just a cutesy but eh, guilty pleasures are great fun after all.

This was so entertaining and refreshing! I love it when a book unexpectedly make me laugh. I had so much fun reading this. I feel like I found a gem!

Mister Hockey was just pure fun with great humor. I thought Jed and Breezy were extremely likable characters. They had such a hilarious first meeting and they kept going strong from there. Jed and Breezy were so sweet end genuine and I loved their banter. I thought they had great chemistry and were flirty and fun together, I loved their playfulness. I loved the build of them coming together.

There are some things they're both dealing with, him a hockey injury and her some self esteem issues and I like how they were addressed and how it played out in the story. This was an easy read with a bit of drama and some emotion mixed in but the big take away is that it was highly entertaining. I loved the building heat and the sexy times. The writing was really good. This was a fast paced read with really good details and descriptions, not overly in depth but enough that was totally hooked. There were a few transition issues in the front half for me but after that it was smooth sailing.

This story was seriously a winner! It was just one of those stories that was outright fun to read and I kept giggling throughout. It wasn't sports heavy at all but him being a hockey player definitely plays into things. I love the set up for the next story, Head Coach. Great way to kick off a new series!

When her grandma's screech follow a few seconds later, Breezy squeezed her eyes shut. Granny Dee had found Jed West. The only hope was that he wasn't double fisting two lipstick vibrators. They'd been on sale, two for one, which seemed like a deal at the time.

This was my first read by Riley but I don't think it'll be my last. While I didn't think this story, book one in her Hellions Angels series, was perfect I definitely found myself entertained but more importantly : I want that second book because I want that follow up couple.

"All this excitement makes me want to pee."

But as far as MISTER HOCKEY goes.. it was a little simple. Basically from the opening chapter (and, you know, the synopsis) we know the two conflicts that will carry the story. One being Jed West, "Mister Hockey" himself, and his concern over a head injury; and two, his number one fan, who happens to cross paths with her number one fantasy, lies -- oh, sorry, omits -- the truth about her fandom. Jed as a rule doesn't date fans and Breezy manages to keep the truth from him until that pivotal point where he finds out.. which just happens to coincide with a bit of drama. This element was probably my least favourite of the whole book. Breezy promises herself she'll come clean, gives herself a few different opportunities, but never does and.. I mean, I was meh over that whole thing. And double meh over the drama because the fact that Jed is oblivious to the truth was so painful.

Anyway.

"I don't mess around."
"Now that's a lie. Because you've been messing with my head for forty-eight hours."
"Wow. That might be the worst pickup ever."
"Nah. That would be the GMC Syclone. Can't tow with it. Has limited payload and no chance of ever going off-road."

This was lighthearted and occasionally funny and sometimes that's all you want from a romance. It went a little silly at times, and in that kind of "yeah yeah okay" way, but I do like the trope of the famous sportsdude/musician/'insert whatever here' falling for the everyday woman. And bonus points for Breezy being built like one, too.

"You really do love books."
"I adore chocolate. I require books. They are like oxygen or water, vital to my existence."

Aside from the simplistic set-up, plot, and hand-fed conflicts, I also kinda disliked some of Riley's transitions. It bugs me so hard when actions or scenes are happening one way.. and suddenly we've moved on or are ignoring the circumstances to focus on something else. Like, if I'm too busy trying to figure out if the characters went from screwing on the floor to being in a bed, or wondering when someone got dressed, I'm definitely not caught up in the dialogue or the characters. I'm too busy rereading something for clarity. But I know I'm a very detail oriented person so this kind of casual or vague use of setting or "of course they put on clothes when they left the room" logic, despite never being told it happened, might not bug other people. I just don't like doing the work for the author, y'know?

RANT OVER.

He woke up each morning and put on pants one leg at a time. He liked his job and was damn good at doing it, but it wasn't pulling kids from burning buildings or defending his country. Hero worship would mess with a guy's mind.

Yes, so, I did like this, but didn't love it. I do intend to read on but would I recommend you rush out to read this one? If we share similar tastes or pet peeves, I'd say no. But I will say this so as to end on a good note : it was refreshing to have a hero like Jed who wasn't caught up in his own self-importance, who liked simple things, who avoided the emotional complications/relationships with fans because he wanted to be seen as something other than what he got paid to do for a living or a fantasy. He was a very real kind of person despite his fame and success and I did like reading from his perspective. If you like a man who likes real women, if you like reading about bookworms, if you like a little insta with your love, and like your romances rather uncomplicated and free of angst, this might check all your boxes.

On her tombstone it would read : She came. She saw. She made it awkward.

With Tor's book up next, even though he's the coach, I'm hoping for a bit more hockey in my hockey romance, though!

3 "everything would be all right in the end; if it wasn't all right, it wasn't the end" stars

I really wanted to like this book. But I’m sad to say the greatest part about this book was that it was short. Now don’t get me wrong it, wasn’t a horrible read, but if it was more pages than it was I probably would’ve dnfed it. The writing made everything just a tad confusing I had to go back so many times to make sure I knew what was going on. I also didn’t love the characters. My favorite character was probably the Coach and you barely heard from him.
The potential for this story was great but the execution left a lot to be desired. I am also sure that people will probably pick this up and find it super spicy, but again the writing confused me way too much. Especially during the spicier parts.

Now even though this isn’t my cup of tea maybe it is yours and that’s okay. I just know I will not read this again and I have no idea if I will give this author another chance as of yet.

Breezy and Jed ... two characters that are ridiculously likeable in their own right. How much cuter could Breezy be ... librarian in the children's section and a die hard hockey fan, especially a Jed fan :) Oh my and Jed was just sooooo swoony :) I thoroughly enjoyed them both. They had exceptional chemistry in their sexy times and non-sexy times. I LOVED that even though our hero is a hockey player, the game did not take center stage to the romance. Why? Because that's what a romance fiction book is ... a romance journey. It was refreshing to read about an athlete falling in love without his career taking the focus in the journey!

This was a really fun and sexy little romance story with a few little emotional tugs. I loved the entire book! :)

Mister Hockey by Lia Riley is the first story in her Hellions Angels series. It’s about the players and staff of an NHL team and their romantic relationships. This one looks at one of the Denver Hellions star players, Jed West, as he navigates a possible concussion and a down to earth woman who delivers a slap shot to his heart.

Breezy Angel is Jed West’s biggest fan. She’s got his calendar, his coffee cup, and even a cardboard cutout of him, a gag gift from her friend. When her sister Neve, a sports journalist, shows up at Breezy’s library with the hockey player in tow to replace the Hellion’s coach for a children’s event, she tries desperately to keep her fandom to herself. As it turns out she’s pretty successful. Breezy can’t believe Jed would have any interest in her. She’s a tall woman with a pin up style figure, and definitely not the typical puck bunny type she’d expect Jed to be with. But the two of them really click.

Jed’s been experiencing blurred vision and other symptoms of a concussion and has finally decided to see a neurologist to figure out what’s going on and how it will affect the future of his game. He has a brother whose football career was cut short by a concussion and who still deals with serious mental problems as a result, so it’s not something he takes lightly. Spending time with Breezy gives him a chance to be just a normal guy and not a famous hockey star with issues. He’s got a strict policy of not getting involved with fans and is relieved that Breezy is a woman who is interested in him for himself and not his stardom. But when he finds out about Breezy’s secret, will he believe her feelings for him are genuine?

I really enjoyed this story! It’s an off ice story (no game scenes), looking at the down side of sports injuries and their repercussions. Jed’s relationship with his brother is fractured because of this and though his options are limited, Jed is trying his best to be supportive. While these are some emotionally charged scenes, in contrast, the friendship Jed and Breezy develop is much lighter in tone, with lots of laughs.

Breezy is such a fun female character! Though she has some self-esteem issues due to her size, and her relationship with her demanding mother, her bubbly personality shows through. With Jed, she is a bit klutzy at first but finds her footing once she realizes that Jed is just a normal (albeit very good looking) guy. Jed is down to earth, helpful, and yes, sexy but not smug. He knows that fortunes can turn on a dime and appreciates what he has. The sparks that fly between them upon first meeting soon lead to some very steamy sex scenes and a deepening of the emotional attachment between them. The conflict that comes between them makes them question the depths of those feelings. Fortunately, it’s all resolved to a very happy ending. It looks like Breezy’s sister Neve and Jed’s coach have a little something going on between them, so I can’t wait to read their story too!

I really liked this book! I started reading it months ago and it just wasn’t working for me at the time. I decided to give it another try and had a great time with it this time around. If you have been following my reviews for any amount of time, you probably already know that I have a bit of a soft spot for hockey romances. Breezy and Jed were great characters and I couldn’t wait to see them fall for each other.

Breezy works as a children’s librarian and is one of Jed West’s biggest fans. She is shocked to see him fill in at a library appearance, thanks to her journalist sister. Jed saves the day when Breezy has a wardrobe malfunction by loaning his jacket. The pair start to form a connection when he stops by her house to retrieve his jacket and stays for a bit. I loved these two together and thought that they had fantastic chemistry.

I am a fan of Vanessa Edwin’s narration and was excited to see that she narrated this book along with new-to-me narrator, Alexander Cendese. I didn’t love the voices that the male narrator used for the female voices but that is my only complaint. Overall, I thought that the narration was well done. I especially appreciated the female narrator’s range of voices and thought that both narrators added the right amount of emotion to their reading.

I would recommend this book to others. I thought that this was a fun hockey romance. It was great getting to know both of these characters and I was quickly invested in their blooming romance. I wouldn’t hesitate to read more books in this series.

Imagine meeting the biggest fantasy of your dreams. That star sports player who you'd never in a million years think you'd meet in person. But that's what happens when Breezy Angel meets Jed West, captain of the Denver Hellions NHL team. And it's so better much better than she could have imagined. Jed West...*sigh* He may be the star player of his team, but there's much more to him. He's kind, caring, and oh so into Breezy Angel. He likes everything about her, especially her curves.

Breezy, head of the children's section of the local library (which I love) is all about the books and hockey of course (the women in her family are die-hard hockey fans), but she doesn't let Jed in on a little secret that she's his biggest fan. She's got the Jed West memorabilia to prove it. She doesn't want him thinking that is the only reason she's into him. Because after meeting him and sharing some hot kisses, Breezy knows it goes way beyond that. But Jed has secrets of his own and it could be what tears them apart.

Breezy's family hasn't always been supportive of her and she's been in the shadow of her "perfect" sister (who's a sports columnist). She loves her sister and her family, she just wishes her family, especially her mother could see how special she is too. She does have an awesome 90 year old grandma, who I loved!

Hot chemistry, sexy scenes and a couple I was rooting for from the beginning, Mister Hockey is a great start to the Hellions Angels series. I can't wait to read Breezy's sister Neve and the head coach's story!

If last year’s reading taught me anything, it’s how much I love a sports romance, and hockey might be my fave. This was such a delight to read, and the short chapters, sweet romance with all the spice, was just what I needed to kick off the New Year.

🎧I paired the audiobook with the book and found that I actually preferred the physical format best, but would still recommend.

I loved this! LOVED IT! It was so cute and charming, and both main characters were just great. I also liked that a sports romance dealt with CTE. Additionally, as a librarian myself, budget cuts, especially in public libraries are a very real possibility, so the whole story, while being incredibly cute and fun, had an air of realness to it.

So great!

You guys know that I'm a sucker for a sports romance, and I have an even major weakness for hockey romances. So when I saw that this book was on sale, I was ALL. OVER. IT. This is a very sweet and straight to the point type of story that's why I rated it a 3-star. Don't get it twisted it was hot, but I feel like it lacked a bit on the plot. I have already pre-ordered the companion sequel, Head Coach because it is not only a hockey romance BUT a hate-to-love type of story and I am once again a sucker for that as well.

Schematyczna, pozbawiona chemii i głębszego sensu historia.

Lia Riley amps up the heat in Mister Hockey - prepare yourself Jed is going to melt more than your heart ;)

Jed has centred his entire life around his hockey career, although his current state of health has him questioning the direction of his future. When a meeting with a sports reporter, Neve, takes an unexpected turn into a guest appearance at the local library his future takes on a new direction with the introduction of an Amazonian Goddess by the name of Briana (Breezy) Angel, who also happens to be Neve's younger sister.

Breezy is Jed's number one fan having drooled over him for years while watching him play with the colourful female members of her family. Breezy is a children's librarian, an adorable geek and utterly beautiful although she doesn't see herself very clearly. Her self-confidence has recently taken a serious set-back with the break-up of her relationship compounded by her mothers constant criticism. Lia looks at the negative effect comparisons between siblings can have on them and the strain it places on a relationship between the siblings. Luckily, Neve and Breezy are very close and not affected by their mothers negativity in that manner.

Breezy and Jed have an instant attraction but also a connection they weren't expecting or prepared for. Circumstances bring Breezy and Jed together but with Breezy determined to keep her fangirling and their budding relationship a secret it doesn't provide a solid basis on which to build a lasting relationship.

Jed also has his own issues with his family especially his brother who has medical issues stemming from his own sports career. The narrative takes into consideration the topical issue of chronic traumatic encephalopathy in sports players - resulting in life altering repercussions affecting their mental health and even dementia in later life. Jed has to factor all of these issues into his future along with his feelings for Breezy.

The romance is electric in Mister Hockey but it is the character development that really shines through the pages. Both Jed and Breezy grow as individuals as well as a couple through Mister Hockey, While the path to true love does not run smoothly, it is obvious to the outside observer that Breezy and Jed belong together and deserve to create their own happily ever after.

Mister Hockey shows that the path you had laid out in front of you may not be the one you should be on but the future holds something even better in store ♥

Lia has paved the way for the next book in the series within the pages of Mister Hockey; HEAD COACH is coming November 2017!!!!
