The Cats of Silver Crescent

Rate this book
In this stand-alone novel with themes of friendship and family, eleven-year-old Elsby discovers a family of talking cats living in the house next door and must help them harness the magic that made them that way. From the author of the acclaimed Coo, The Cats of Silver Crescent is for fans of Kathi Appelt and Katherine Applegate. With her mother busy traveling for work, Elsby isn’t thrilled to be spending a few weeks with her great-aunt Verity. Luckily, she has her notebook and a lush garden to sketch to help pass the time. But a visitor takes Elsby by a cat standing on its two hind legs and dressed like a sailor dashes across the garden and into the neighboring woods! Elsby can’t believe her eyes, and Aunt Verity doesn’t seem to believe Elsby, either. But that night, the cat and three of his cat companions approach Elsby. They need Elsby’s help. While the cats can talk, think, and behave like humans, the magical spell that made them that way will revert if it’s not renewed soon. Elsby might be the only one who can save them—but every enchantment comes at a price. A contemporary fantasy about family, friends, trust, and the magic that’s inside everyone, The Cats of Silver Crescent will captivate animal lovers and fans of Jenn Reese’s A Game of Fox & Squirrels .

In a Nutshell: Grabbed it for the title, the cover, and the premise. This was supposed to be a contemporary MG fantasy with talking cats. However, the fantasy takes a much darker turn than expected, the cats held no appeal after a point, and the story also was mostly boring. Overall, very disappointed. Wouldn’t recommend this to cat-loving kids.

Plot Preview:
Twelve-year-old Elsby is spending a couple of months with her great-aunt Verity in Rhode Island as her mother has to travel for work. While wandering in the back garden, she stumbles on an unexpected sight: a cat, standing on its hind legs, and dressed in a sailor suit. Elsby cannot believe her eyes, but the cat runs away before she can figure out if it was real or a part of her imagination.
At night however, the cat, along with three other cat friends, comes to Elsby’s bedroom, and begins to talk! They want Elsby’s help, and Elsby, being an animal lover, cannot refuse them. However, it soon becomes clear that the help goes much beyond what the cats initially revealed.
The story comes to us mostly in Elsby’s and the cats’ third-person perspectives.

Bookish Yays:
😻 Talking cats – the only novelty of the book.

😻 Great cover.

Bookish Mixed Bags:
🐱 Elsby – Helpful. Animal lover. Bibliophile. Doesn’t know how to say no. Keeps secrets from mom and great-aunt. Not sure how effective she is as a protagonist. I found her lacklustre.

🐱 Verity and Rose (the cats' owner) – Very interesting characters but don’t get much page space. The big reveal about Verity at the end came out of nowhere. Wish it had been explored right from the start as that was the most interesting part of the book.

Bookish Nays:
😿 The cats: Bet you didn’t expect to see the cats in the Nays column! Neither did I! I usually love fictional animals. But that’s how bad their portrayal is. Each cat has a different personality, but the dominant one, Clarissa, blatantly indulges in gaslighting, manipulating, and bullying. She is rude and self-centred, and not afraid to guilt-trip her companions. As she gets most of the key scenes, the experience is irksome.

😿 The plot development: It begins with one idea, and goes into totally unexpected territory. There’s no connection between the start and the end.

😿 A major chunk of the book is about Elsby’s feelings of inadequacy, which is really disappointing when you expect a book about cats.

😿 The pacing is slow at the start, boring in between, and overly rushed at the end. One arc isn’t even completed. I am not sure if it is leaving the doors open for a sequel, but my doors are shut against it.

😿 Somehow, the tone of the book feels very pretentious, what with characters spouting old poems and advocating only classical literature. If it intended to create a passion in little readers for old-school art, it doesn’t happen.

😿 There are many plot points that I am not sure were needed. Cats getting high on catnip, sad revelations about what animal shelters do to animals who aren't adopted after 90 days, occult ideas such as interacting with spirits and spirits returning from the dead - how is all this built into a MG work? The occult content isn’t scary, I admit, but there should be some clue in the premise that the plot goes into such pseudo-horror territory. Some children might genuinely be spooked by such dark magic, especially when cats are involved.

😿 You can't create a villainous threat when you don't even intend to use his presence for more than a couple of paras in the climax. What a waste of an arc!

I thought I was being exceedingly harsh on an MG book, especially considering how I almost always enjoy this genre. So I passed on the book to my middle-grader, hoping to have a more balanced perspective from the target audience. She completed the book only out of a sense of obligation to me. Numerous times, she told me how boring the whole book was, and how horrible the ending was. She was also annoyed by something one character said to another during the finale, which she considered very selfish.

All in all, this is a confused book. Not ‘confusing’; ‘confused’. Like it isn't sure what it wants to do, and ends up doing a bit of everything and justice to nothing.

I don’t think I can recommend this book, especially to cat-loving children because they will be horrified at the cat-rep in this tale. But it *might* work better with little dark-fantasy lovers. Just in case there’s a sequel planned for the incomplete arc, I hope it sorts things out neatly, but I won’t be reading it.

1.5 stars. (1 star from my daughter, 2 stars from me. Averaged and rounded up.)

My thanks to HarperCollins Children's Books and NetGalley for the DRC of “The Cats of Silver Crescent”. This review is voluntary and contains my honest opinion about the book. Sorry this didn’t work out better.

Picked this book up at the library because the cover was just gorgeous. Also, I thought my family might like it. However, I found 90% of the characters in the book to be insufferable. I didn’t mind the darkness of the story, but it does lose some appeal when it steps away from the cottage-cute charm of talking cats and toward inevitable danger. Recommend this book for readers who don’t mind some story irregularities and enjoy strong girls and women as MCs.

I listened to this via an audio ARC through NetGalley. And it was narrated using AI, so the fact that I was able to listen to the whole book and still give it four stars is a testament to itself.

This is a very cute and wholesome middle grade novel about friendship, loyalty, and trust. Our protagonist is dropped off at her great aunt's house for the summer (whom she has never previously met) and is swept into a world of intrigue when she meets several talking, Victorian clothes-wearing, cats who need her help. There is a great amount of speculation on what the cats are up to, and a world of magic that our protagonist finds herself dealing with. I thought the themes of loneliness and isolation were very well handled without being too dark or taking up too much of the plot. Overall, a really fun book and a delight to read.

Elsby is an eleven-year-old who has to spend her summer with her great-aunt Verify. While exploring outside of Aunt Verify’s backyard she spots something unusual, Elsby saw a cat wearing clothes. What was even more unusual was that the cat was walking on only two legs and was holding a basket. Quickly Elsby learns that the next door cats are no ordinary cats and embarks on an adventurous journey complete with magic and ghosts. Elsby soon learns the cats are able to speak and are in need of her dire help.
The story is very intriguing and each chapter has an illustration of a cat. The characters are well developed and the book is as magical as gingerbread house. This book is perfect for a cozy read.

Thank you NetGalley, HarperCollins Children’s Book and Greenwillow Books for sending me an ARC in exchange of an honest review of the book received.

Elsby’s mom is an Art curator and has a job in LA… Elsby is staying with her aunt in Rhode Island who is a archeologist professor on summer break, Elsby discovers that the house her aunt lives in, the neighbors are not what she expected.

Cottagecore + Beatrix potter…I loved the descriptions, Elsby’s first sightings of her aunts house to the tangled unkept gardens in the back… this book gave off major cozy vibes! This is yet another book I could see my younger self devouring and making my personality.

Deliciously mysterious and utterly charming. THE CATS OF SILVER CRESCENT is a book you just want to fall into, reveling in the lush and enchanting world Kaela Noel has imagined for us. This is the sort of fantasy I would have gobbled up as a child. An old-fashioned delight.

Warmest thanks - to Net Galley, Greenwillow, and the author - for the advanced review copy.

This cottagecore galore novel with erudite cats in clothes is a perfect cozy read for fans of talking animals the style of Beatrix Potter, fans of Jenn Reese’s A Game of Fox & Squirrels, and Katherine Applegate. A healer (Rose) leaves these cats alone to fence for themselves and they need food and books so they risk talking to a child (Elsby) to ask for help. Elsby is already an author-illustrator in progress. But there's more to do than get them Beowulf, recite Emily Dickson's poems, or play classical compositions. The tension comes from the need to recast the spell soon enough so the cats can continue to speak and live as humans. For that, they need a magician human like Rose.
Staying with family while single mom deals with work, and making new friends. Cozy fiction and a magical vibe.

What starts out as a story about a girl who meets four talking cats turns sinister. Could one of the four cats be evil? If you like stories about dark magic or cats, this might be for you.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me to read an advanced copy of this title; this is a review of an uncorrected e-proof.

While Elsby stays with her aunt for a few weeks, she observes a peculiar group of cats living next door. The next thing she knows, they can speak, walk, dress up and much more. The story delves into the secrets behind the magical capabilities of these cats and Elsby's expected role to play in keeping things functioning. But all that glitter is not gold, and there is something the felines are still keeping from her. To know more... read the book 😉.

Imagining the cats doing everything that was described in the story was equal parts funny, cute and whimsical. The book was more on the cozy side than the gloomy which makes it a fit for comfy readers. There are also features of new friendships and personal insecurities on the sidelines that add to the layering of this middle-grade adventure.

Thank you @this_is_edelweiss @_kaelanoel_ @greenwillowbooks @harperkids for the Digital ARC.

From the gorgeously illustrated cover, I knew that The Cats of Silver Crescent would be the perfect cozy comfort read. Full of magic, friendship, talking cats, and subtle wit and humor, this is a story that I would've relished as a young reader, and that today's readers will love. Elsby is a charming and relatable protagonist, fulfilling every child's dream of finding magic in an ordinary and unwanted situation. She finds her strength as a writer through the experience of staying at her aunt's house, meeting the cats, and making a new friend in Penelope. I would love to read a sequel--wondering where the evil cat Clarissa goes, and what happens next, as Elsby and Penelope embark on their research into the world of ghosts and magic.

Where was "The Cats of Silver Crescent" when I was in middle school? I found this book to be such a heartwarming and delightful read. Anything with cats is an immediate winner in my book (pun intended), but talking cats donning Victorian-era style attire? My heart might've just skipped a beat from the sheer cuteness of it all!

Kaela Noel crafts a story that resonates with themes of friendship, loyalty, and family. Through the young protagonist, Elsby, we are drawn into a world that blurs the line between the ordinary and the magical. As someone who would have been deeply engrossed in such tales as a child, it felt like a trip down memory lane. The narrative was imbued with a sense of wonder that would capture the imagination of any middle-grade reader.

The overarching plot about Elsby helping these endearing feline characters harness their magic felt wholesome and sweet. There's an underlying lesson about trust and the essence of magic that resides in every individual, which I appreciated. The nod to other beloved writers like Kathi Appelt and Katherine Applegate in the book description is merited; Noel's writing does share similarities with the emotional and captivating tales these authors weave.

However, no story is without its little quirks. While I was thoroughly enchanted for the most part, there were a few narrative threads that didn't quite tie up to my satisfaction. It left me wondering about certain plot points that could have used a touch more clarity.

Nevertheless, "The Cats of Silver Crescent" is an enchanting tale that will likely find its way into the hearts of many. It's a solid 4 out of 5 stars from me, and I eagerly await more stories from Kaela Noel!

The coziest of cozy fall-imbued stories. Now keeping in mind this is a middle-grade read, we're left with a beautifully crafted story that could get anyone in the autumn feels. Cats, magic, and adventure? Yes, please. Did I mention the cats TALK? It's a sweet tale of magic gone wrong and our main characters' journey to fix it. This time the deadline means the sweet little cats will pay the price! Intriguing in its own right, they also have a great fashion sense! The perfect makings of the story to withstand time. The melancholy our girl Elsby faces with her mom gone is something many will connect to immediately.

4.5. I thoroughly enjoyed this book in the way I enjoyed books as a kid. It’s intriguing, original, strange, a little cozy and also a little scary. It feels at once familiar and fresh. Pretty sure I would have devoured it several times as a child. Heck, I’d be happy to read it again now. The characters are memorable, and I read a lot that aren’t (admittedly, my book memory is poor outside of books I truly love). While it isn’t a difficult read, I will recommend it to voracious kid readers who just love how books work, just love a satisfying read.

This middle grade fantasy has it all - a child dropped off with a mysterious great-aunt for the summer, magical talking cats, ghosts, the messiness of new friendship, and magical rituals gone awry. This book bridges the gap between middle grade animal-fiction lovers and fantasy aficionados. I enjoyed it quite a bit— it is the exact kind of book I would have DEVOURED in fifth grade. I would give this book to an ambitious third grader and up.

“The Cats of Silver Crescent” is an enchanting middle grade fantasy novel. A perfect book for cat lovers, and lovers of magic. It had a perfect mix of whimsy and mystery, that kept me turning to the next page. The family of talking cats are amusing in their differences and similarities with normal cats. Each cat had a different personality and ones I could recognize in cats I’ve met in my own life. I believe the young protagonist and narrator Elsby would be very relatable for young girls with creative interests or are animal lovers. Elsby also makes friends with a girl named Penelope and is, in my opinion, good representation for young girls on the autism spectrum. I enjoyed the themes of friendship and honesty that are part of the book, and the personal development that Elsby’s character undergoes because of her adventures with the talking cats. This was a fun read, I’d be interested to see what else the author may write.

Fun read to start the year especially since my goal is to just pick books off the shelf as I please and not read as much of the stories everyone else is reading. I’m not usually one for books about magic, ghosts, etc but if you know me the idea of cats that read, embroider, and cook (aka my same hobbies) is obviously one I couldn’t resist. The fantasy did take a bit of a dark perhaps unnecessary turn but for the most part it was a story full of adorable surprises to keep you engaged. Great audiobook on the shorter end particularly for fellow cat lovers with grandma hobbies

Thank you to HarperCollins, Kaela Noel, and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this ARC!

This is a very fun, very whimsical story of mystery and magic. And cats!! Elsby is a very flushed out character full of feeling and quirk and feels right at home in the New England setting (especially for a New Yorker!). While the first few chapters are a bit exposition heavy, the story is fantastic and, as a New Englander myself, invoked so much nostalgia. In many ways, it reminded me of Hocus Pocus and the feeling I get when spooky season comes around!

Kaela Noel's The Cats of Silver Crescent is exactly the sort of book I would have loved in late grade school or Junior High. It has a bookish girl for a heroine, her budding friendship with a goth girl, talking cats who wear clothing and read books, a great-aunt who appears not to find anything too unlikely to be believed (in a good way), and a creepy town with a creepy founder hoping to return from the dead. The build-up here is slow, the end a bit rushed, but it offers exactly the kind of fantasy I've always found delightful.

I received a free electronic review copy of this title from the publisher; the opinions are my own.

When staying with her aunt, a eleven-year-old girl discovers that there are talking cats next door and they want her to help them harness the magic that made then that way! Elsby has to stay with her great-aunt Verity when her mother is busy traveling for a new art installation job. Upon arrival Elsby spots a strange cat, a cat that is fully dressed in clothes that is similar to Beatrix Potter characters and walking on its two feet! Elsby soon discovers that living next door to her is a family of magical talking cats who need her help to get groceries and do errands because their only human friend who use to help them has died. Elsby also discovers that the cats are all under a magical spell and if they dont renew the spell they won't be able to maintain their form... but there is a price and when Elsby discovers the price it might be too late. This was such a fun middlegrade novel featuring talking cats, friendship, magical adventure, and just a cozy read! I think it definitely should be added onto a autumn or cozy tbr!

For fans of the Secret Garden or Studio Ghibli's The Cat Returns, The Cats of Silver Cresent is a perfect read. Kaela Noel crafts a heartfelt story about family and friendship under the backdrop of Victorian cats and the blurring of worlds. Elsby discovers that the cats next door living in her aunt's house have magical abilities, and from that moment, she is expected to keep this secret...
The cats acting as Victorian people brought so much whimsy and was a joy to read about. It would be perfect for any young reader who seeks magic in unlikely places.
