De kracht van verwondering is een verzameling van de beste essays van de Britse schrijver Gilbert Keith Chesterton (1874-1936). Met zijn vloeiende stijl wist Chesterton de weg terug te wijzen naar een betoverde wereld – voorbij de bezwaren van de Verlichting. Hiermee legde hij de basis voor Lord of the Rings en de Narnia-reeks van zijn leerlingen Tolkien en Lewis. In Nederland is Chesterton vreemd genoeg nog niet zo bekend. Dit boek biedt een niet te vergeten kennismaking met het denken van deze vrolijke profeet, want zijn scherpzinnigheid en humor zijn verbluffend.

He was educated at St. Paul’s, and went to art school at University College London. In 1900, he was asked to contribute a few magazine articles on art criticism, and went on to become one of the most prolific writers of all time. He wrote a hundred books, contributions to 200 more, hundreds of poems, including the epic Ballad of the White Horse, five plays, five novels, and some two hundred short stories, including a popular series featuring the priest-detective, Father Brown. In spite of his literary accomplishments, he considered himself primarily a journalist. He wrote over 4000 newspaper essays, including 30 years worth of weekly columns for the Illustrated London News, and 13 years of weekly columns for the Daily News. He also edited his own newspaper, G.K.’s Weekly.
Chesterton was equally at ease with literary and social criticism, history, politics, economics, philosophy, and theology.

Tegendraadse originele essays
'Dat is wat het leven tegelijkertijd zo prachtig en zo vreemd maakt. We bevinden ons in de verkeerde wereld. Toen ik dacht dat we in de juiste stad waren, verveelde ik me; toen ik wist dat het de verkeerde was, was ik gelukkig. Het valse optimisme, het moderne geluk, hangt ons de keel uit, omdat het ons vertelt dat we in deze wereld thuishoren. Het ware geluk zit hierin dat we hier niet thuishoren. We komen ergens anders vandaan. We zijn verdwaald.'

Van deze essays heb ik genoten, een prachtige kennismaking met het werk van Chesterton. Met humor, positiviteit en scherpte neemt hij je mee in het leven, krijg je inzichten en zin in het leven. Ik ga zeker meer van Chesterton lezen.
