Ever since her ex husband, Dave, abruptly left town with the woman who helped break up her marriage, Kay Manning, has worked hard to provide a sense of stability and “new normal” for her two girls. With the help of a challenging (and oftentimes, wacky) job as an apprentice funeral director, Kay is proud she has survived and thrived.
Now, seven years later, Kay's stable world is rocked again by Dave's unexpected return and eager desire to resume his role as "Dad." But instead of the smooth co-parenting relationship Dave promises, Kay finds herself having to navigate around all the trap doors created by the old, familiar gap between what Dave says and what he does.
Can Kay find a way to push past her disappointment and unresolved feelings for Dave and finally move on with her life?
Believe it or not, Delora Dennis was born in a funeral home in Belen, New Mexico. Just like the family in the HBO series, Six Feet Under, her family lived in the funeral home established by her grandfather in 1936.
Delora launched her writing career in 1965, at the tender age of nine, with the production of her play (with a long-since forgotten title) by her elementary school's Home and School Association. Of course, the trajectory of said launch didn't exactly follow a straight path. Detours along the way included stints as a human resources manager, assistant funeral director, legislative analyst, speech writer, state fair exhibit manager, and independent video producer.
Delora returned to the path in 1993 and since then has been writing in one form or another - video scripts, website content, how-to books, product reviews, informative articles, blog posts, press releases, etc. Looking back now it's clear all of this was preparation for the type of writing she knew she had to try, but resisted like crazy.
"I've discovered writing fiction is like playing with a new toy. Once you've mastered the basics, the real fun comes from finding new ways to play with it. I'm having a ball."
"Same Old Truths (The Reluctant Avenger)" by Delora Dennis is a good family / divorce drama with great character development and some bite. Single mother Kay has to deal with her ex-husband's return to the neighbourhood with a decrease in his allimony payments. Struggling with her job at a mortuary while keeping busy with being a good and responsible mom her life is already tough enough, let alone court battles and single meetings. Dennis shows brilliantly how Kay gradually finds the confidence to stop being the 'same old pansy' and come into her own. An wonderfully inspiring novel, with a little romance thrown in. Recommended.
What a roller coaster ride! Warm, funny, frustrating, sad, funny again and then finally...........satisfying! Brings together subjects that we all seem to avoid, but does so in the most endearing way. It's a must read for anyone who has believed in someone that didn't deserve it.
327 pages of poor self worth, but still a fun ride...
Lots of guffaws with morgue life in between, or was it the other way around? All the way through, I was screaming at my Kindle for someone to give this woman some balls. I was on the verge of writing her a note to answer "yes" to her question, "Do I have stupid written across my forehead?," regarding her douche of an ex before remembering she was a character in a book. That's how mad I was and that's how wrapped up I got, which means great storytelling was involved. TO THE AUTHOR: This book was "chalk"ful of misquotes but a barrel full of "fund". Thank you for the ride, hearst aside;) Hardy horror horror.
