'DEEP by Stephen hogtun is an absolute masterpiece' - David Litchfield, award-winning illustrator 'DEEP is a wonder' - Abi Elphinstone - author of SKY SONG

“Go my little one, swim free,” she whispered. “I'll always be waiting here . . . ”
When a tiny whale calf is born, his mother raises him to the surface to take his first breath. She guides him as he grows, until he is strong enough to swim at her side, and they set off together on a great journey across the oceans.
One day, the time will come for the grown calf to set out on his own . . . but wherever he goes and whatever he does, his mother will be waiting for him and sending her song of love across the oceans.
Filled with beautiful, luminous artwork, this stunning picture book tells a universal story about love and family that's perfect for readers young and old.
I received a gifted copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review as part of the book tour hosted by Kaleidoscopic book tours.
Deep is a stunning picture book for children with so much love and meaning. We follow a mother whale and her baby from birth to him finally joining other whales to continue his life, free across the oceans. I loved the messages within this book such as life isn't always smooth sailing and using calming techniques and mindfulness can help calm our minds and that when times are dark, hidden beauty and finding the way can be found if you look closely enough. This is such a beautiful book and a special one for any parent to share with their child. This would make a great book to pass down through generations too.
What a beautiful, gentle story this is. The book has gorgeous illustrations throughout. It is a simple story of a mother whale and her calf and the journey that they take together as the calf learns and grows. It is a tale of a mother’s love for her child and it is an ideal story to be read to young children.
The illustrations throughout are absolutely gorgeous and I've been considering getting some of them framed for my bathroom as I love whales.
Beautifully written, Deep is the tale of a mother's love for her child, in this case the love for her calf and the immense journey they undertake across oceans.
A touching and heart warming tale. The expressive illustrations create a moving narrative. It is both gentle and reflective, a must read for those who appreciate stories about love and family.
"Deep" by Stephen Hogton is a new book that graces the catalog of Artline Publishers (Bulgarian edition), to whom I am extremely grateful for the book. It arrived today and I was already reading it to my kids before bed. The younger one repeated "fish, fish", and the older one was ready with a portion of questions about the pictures and the text. The release is great. The covers are hard and beautiful. The illustrations are beautiful and the text to them had me in tears on the last page.
This is the story of a mother whale and her baby whale and their adventure across the ocean. Love is a leading theme in it, and I, as a mother, could not remain indifferent. I identified with the mother and imagined myself guiding my children through life, knowing that sooner or later each of them would take their own path. A true story told in such a way that both warms the heart and tightens your throat.
The book is definitely one of the most beautiful editions we have in our library. The children flipped through it for a long time, and the dialogue with the oldest was emotional. "Why did the baby whale leave, mom?" "Because he is no longer a baby whale and needs new experiences." "And will the mother cry?" "Of course, every mother cries when her child goes his own way, but she will always be there waiting for him to come home."
Do I recommend the book? Definitely yes! I've even already thought people to whom I would give it as a gift. I really like books that make sense and provoke you not only to think, but also to feel, and this one certainly does!
As a mother it really hits home. All you want is your child to be the best they can be and for them to be happy and healthy. This book epitomises this perfectly.
The illustrations bring the beautifully written book to life.
This a great bedtime read with your little one or a useful book for a PSHE lesson about family and belonging.
I bought this for my daughter and read it to her recently. It is such a sweet book, I loved the messages in the book and the love between parent and child is portrayed well, it made me feel emotional reading it and seeing her letting her son go off on his own adventure, even though my daughter is so far away from that point in life. I also loved all the images in the book, definitely one of my favourite books I have bought for her so far.
This is a lovely children's book about a whale going on a journey with his mother across the ocean. It has some wonderfully realistic art work through that makes you feel as you are in sea and traveling with this pair. Its a story about growing.
Deep is a beautiful and gentle story about the journey of a whale and her calf as the calf grows and learns. It's a bittersweet story and would be the perfect book to read to a child whose older sibling is moving out or leaving for university. It's a story about staying connected even when it's time to leave and move on with our lives.
I bought this book as a gift for a friend who’s got little boys. The story of a mother whale and her little son is simple yet real and beautiful. The illustrations are amazing and the layout is refreshing. Yes there are some places when the text is black on coloured parts of the illustrations, those should have been white for legibility, but overall, it’s absolutely beautiful and I would love to have it for myself for the illustrations alone.
From cover to cover, this beautifully illustrated novel takes us on a journey through the ocean with a mother and her calf. A journey of learning, growth and development with a whole lot of love.
As a new mother myself, I gained a lot of pleasure reading this to my son at bedtime and I cannot wait for him to truly understand how very much he is loved. One day, he will fly the nest and grow to learn how special life can be. For now, I will continue to read this stunning book to him and this will forever stay on our bookshelf...
A book with a dual story. The Deep is not as it appears, a story of the creatures who live in the depths of the ocean but a story of that AND love through the generations. Some might say it is the story of love set in the deep but for me, it is both, it is magnificent, powerful, emotive. Through the words and pictures that Stephen Hogtun has filled the pages with we go on an adventure into the depths of the bluest oceans. His colour palette takes us from the bright blues of the surface of the water and the sky to the deepest blues of the depths where fish are merely hints of colour. It’s absorbing, dramatic, immersive.
A baby whale calf is born into the world, into the deep. He is raised to the surface so that he can take his first breath in the first rays of the sun. His mother guides, teaches and shows patience with her child, loves him though everything and teaches him to swim by her side. Together they dance and play, she whispers lullabies to him at night. Then, a huge crowd of whales appears, and he is eager to join, but first, his mother tells him, he must learn the journey. When the time is right they leave, into the vast world before them. She teaches him how to stay safe, how to weather the storms, how to find his way home. She teaches him that no matter what there is nothing as deep as her love.
