Rate this book
A level 3 Oxford Bookworms Library graded reader. Retold for Learners of English by Clare West

‘I ran to the side of the ship. “Help, help! Murder!” I screamed, and my uncle slowly turned to look at me. I did not see any more. Already strong hands were pulling me away. Then something hit my head; I saw a great flash of fire, and fell to the ground . . .’

And so begin David Balfour’s adventures. He is kidnapped, taken to sea, and meets many dangers. He also meets a friend, Alan Breck. But Alan is in danger himself, on the run from the English army across the wild Highlands of Scotland . . .

I wanted to read this book because the title "kidnapped" made me to get interested at it. So, in this book, there is a main character called David. He is a very smart and brave boy. However, one day he was going to meet his uncle and it was a rainy day. It made David feel gloom. But suddenly, he was in the room that has been shut and he was alone in that room. He was so surprised and scared. He was shouting for any help to get out from that room. Then, he was thinking why he is located in that room with nobodies and he couldn't think of why he is in there. But he only remembers that he has been kidnapped right after he met his uncle. It was very strange. At that time, David's uncle was talking with somebody that has made David locked in that room. David couldn't think that his uncle is doing those things and David wanted to quickly come out from that dark room. He was thinking to escape. And he was to find something at that room. But somebody came inside the room and talking with his uncle though David couldn't notice that it was his uncle. So he was just acting like he is sleeping. And the time the stranger and uncle going out, he pushed them in to the wall, and David was running really fast to escape from it. Then he noticed nobody was following him. It made him to feel relieved. And he slowly comes back to his home. If I were David, I couldn't escape from that kind of situation so I feel David is very brave!

1:Which do you like to go to a sea or a mountain?(In summer)
A:I like to go to a sea better than a mountain. Especially, I love to swim in the humid day!
2:Have you ever watched movies which are related to a sea?
A:I have watched "Pirates of Carribean". It was so dramatic movie for me. Johnny Depp's action was cool!

Before I read this book, I thought this story is a kind of terrible one, but I understood that this story has a theme of friendship. I could enjoy story!

1. Oxford, level 3
2. 6/1=20 min. 6/3=90min.
3. David, his uncle, kidnapped, Alan, ship, escape, come home
4. a: "Perhaps my uncle wants me to die!" I thought.
b: This scene was shocking for me because nobody think that real uncle want his nephew to die.
5. David has been lived in a little village in Scotland. His parents were both died, so he had to live with other family. One day, he visited a man and he knew that the man was his uncle. He was little strange and he tried to kill and sell David as slave. There were many adventures but excited. Some scenes were little difficult for me.

No, I am not. Actually, I'm also not good at telling liar. My friends told me that it's easy to tell whether I’m making a lie or not because my face changes a lot.
-the tittle sounds like terrible story at first, but actually, it was great and I liked it.
