Hidden Valor #3

Beneath the Bones

Rate this book
Some secrets should stay buried...

With a second serial killer case under her belt, Deputy Kate Holland is finally making headway with her PTSD. But when skeletal remains are unearthed on a sandbar amid the Arkansas River, Kate's world is rocked again.

The decaying bones belong to a soldier once stationed at a nearby National Guard unit, and their DNA links to an unsolved missing person's investigation headed up by the very cop who spent his life undermining Kate's personal and professional confidence.

The more Kate digs into the murdered soldier's life, the more connections she discovers between the victim, an old family friend…and her own father.

Other bodies have begun to turn up as well, and these murders appear to be connected to the original soldier's death—and a sinister plot years in the making.

Will the clues her father missed all those years ago lead to the deaths of every current officer on the Braxton police force—including Kate's?

Written by a former US Navy Lt., Beneath the Bones features Ruger—Kate's 3 yr old German Shepherd & self-appointed therapy dog.

Please Note: Graphic crime scenes abound throughout the Hidden Valor books. This series also contains an honest & raw portrayal of PTSD. If you like strong, female protagonists and seriously gritty, complex suspense that twists and turns all the way to The End, you'll love Candace Irving's Hidden Valor series.

BENEATH THE BONES: A Kate Holland Psychological Suspense (A Hidden Valley Military Veteran/K-9 Mystery Book #3) is another fantastically addictive addition to the Hidden Valley Military series featuring veteran and small town deputy Kate Holland and her K-9 companion Ruger. I start one of these books and I cannot put them down! I do recommend reading them in order due to Kate’s personal and psychological journey.

Deputy Kate Holland is making headway with her treatment of her PTSD and Ruger is almost done with his training to get his K-9 certification. When bones are discovered in a sandbar near the river, they are identified as a veteran from a cold case missing person’s case handled by her dead father.

As Kate begins investigating, she finds disturbing connections to an old family friend and while she does not want to believe it, he offers a confession to the cold case murder. A current murder is discovered as she goes to question a veteran tied to the same group of veterans that have ties to the old bones. A planned conspiracy is beginning to be uncovered that could kill many innocent people unless Kate discovers the plan and location of lethal munitions filled with a deadly biological gas.

I love this series! Kate is a flawed protagonist that has gone through hell, survived terrible physical disfigurement and mental trauma, but is finally getting the help she needs. Her ability to solve her previous serial killer cases demonstrated her grit and determination, but now with her continued healing and the emotional support of her K-9, Ruger, and the start of a relationship with fellow deputy, Arash, Kate is even more realistic, relatable, and believable. I am so excited to follow this relationship in future books. The suspense of the conspiracy plot was high with so many threads to connect, twists, and surprises throughout.

I cannot recommend this book and series enough! Once you open one of these books, you will not be able to stop reading.

This is a Must Read for all women who have served no matter what branch of the military!

Finally, a series about women veterans by a woman veteran that doesn't paint us as only serving until we can find a husband! (Not that I didn't find my soulmate when I was on active duty! You were just an added benefit to 13 years of service, darling!). Candance Irving, a former Navy Lt., demonstrates understanding of the special needs of female veterans returning to civilian life , especially after serving overseas in war zone. This is an area of women's health that VA has begun to realize needs special attention. I think in light of September being Suicide Awareness Month, it was very appropo that I read Beneath the Bones: A Kate Holland Suspense/ A hidden Valor Military Veteran/K-9 series book this month. Beneath the Bones continues to highlight the main character's, Kate Holland, Army CID veteran, now Sheriff deputy, progress and also the pervasiveness of her PTSD. The struggles and the triumphs that continue to play out in her everyday life both personal and professional are seamlessly woven into the story. Kate Holland is not without her flaws but once again she proves that her past experiences only seem to strengthen her. This scenario is not only believable it is beautifully and soulfully written. Again I say, Bravo, Candice Irving!

This novel not only has great characters, the suspense is off the charts. Candice Irving is a master storyteller. She captivates the reader with a dramatic opening scene and then keeps them glued to the pages with the many twists and turns in the plot she creates. I confess to being determined to read this book slowly, exploring all the hints and clues, determined to solve the mystery along with the main character. Yet, the book is so spellbinding I found myself reading late into the night, barely stopping for food and restroom breaks and being totally surprised how far off I was from the identifying the real culprit! This novel, this author, this series is extremely hard to put down.

At this time, this series only has these three books listed. Yet, I hope this is not the end of Kate Holland. I am sure I am not the only reader who is begging, "More Kate Holland, please!"

Sad.

I am so sad that this is the last book, so far. Now I have to wait for the next one. I already pre-ordered it, but waiting is so hard. Seriously, I have enjoyed this series way more than I thought I would. Kate is not the usual cop/detective. She's not a tall, beautiful, sexy, "wisecracking" cliché. In fact, one side of her face is disfigured, she's working with a therapist because of debilitating PTSD, she's sharp and intuitive, she's deadly with a knife, the men she works with look up to her, and she's done a lot of heroic deeds, both in the service and as a deputy, but hates being labeled a hero. She prefers to stay in the background with her best friend, Ruger, who is being trained as a service dog; she saved him when he'd been shot when just a pup, and he's been with her since. There's also a romance, which I normally dislike. In this case, it isn't an unnecessary distraction to the story, and it helps a lot that the romance is adult and mature (no cutesy flirting, huffing, sexy glances, etc.). In this third book, the governor wants to have a public function honoring Kate because of the last two cases she’d solved. The last thing Kate wants to do is attend another affair honoring her as a "hero". Then, two young boys dig up the skull of an ex-serviceman. By the time Kate is deeply involved in this case, attending another public event would seem preferable.

There is only one word to describe the latest book, Beneath the Bones, by Candace Irving in her Hidden Valor series. That is WOW!! What a story. The suspense and excitement start from the very beginning dealing with murder, discrimination, PTSD in several of the characters, the budding romance of Kate and Arash, and of course the remarkable, ever-growing bond between Kate and Ruger. We learn so much more about the thought process in dealing with PTSD that so many returning veterans must deal with. The detailed descriptions of the locations and action are so realistic that it is easy to visualize them as they occur. Considering what has been happening in the news lately with the various security leaks, it is not to hard to imagine the possibility of military armaments being acquired by radical groups.
There is so much more to learn about Kate and what will happen next. Can’t wait for the next book.

One genre that I love but haven't gotten to read lately is the Military/Police Mystery genre, so I was esthetic when this opportunity materialized. I have read several of Candace Irving's previous books which were masterful in the way she portrayed the characters, storyline and gave "just enough" romance to satisfy my craving for a bit of sex and steam. In this story, the discovery of a skull that had been buried for several years sets in motion a series of additional murders, reveals a national threat, destroys a childhood friendship but also brings Kate and the patient man, Arash who has set his sights on making her his woman even if she seems to be scared and hesitant to allow it. I love the progression of Kate, Arash and Ruger's relationship and can't wait for the next book to follow along with their story so they hopefully get the HEA they all deserve.

I was given an ARC in exchange for an honest and totally voluntary review.

Another fascinating, twisting, policing, detecting and K-9 loving book from author Candace Irving jerked me into the wee hours to complete. Kate, Arash, Ruger and all the other great police characters set in Braxton, Arkansas and its surrounds filled the pages with lots of action, excellent theorizing, deducting and bad-guys arresting. My only complaint - needing to wait many more months for the next adventure.

No Detail Forgotten

Literally true for this author. I'm amazed that she keeps it all straight. Even if a reader isn't really concerned about small details, they are always concluded.
The story is complicated and somewhat mysterious. But Kate puts it all together, even at the last minute. Romance appears also, adding to the story. Also for me, the psychological details add a lot as I'm a therapist. Good job!

Cold case gets hot.

In Book Three of the Hidden Valor series, Kate Holland faces a new challenge when the remains of a John Doe are discovered and identified as a veteran who went missing years ago. The threads of the case lead to a frightening current day threat involving biological weapons. Lots of twists, a budding romance for Kate, and some interesting new characters. I recommend the whole series.

Wow. Candace Irving is a talented writer who knows how to get your attention and maintain it. And she's really smart so it stands to reason that sch can create characters who are genius level thinkers too. And she can create those 'not the sharpest knife in the drawer' guys too. It takes all types and she gives them to us in these ex- military guys, local police, wannabe thugs, people trying to right society, and many who live lives of deceit as they try to cover up crimes and family misdeeds.
Losing some of your best friends from childhood is a bitter pill to swallow but the law must be upheld and Kate is all about upholding the law. Even discoveries about her Daddy's involvement in possible coverups doesn't make her back down. Thinking that the local sheriff might be a part of a national terrorist threat is almost too much. Kate perseveres and sorts out the whole mess with the assistance of some highly trained operatives who save the day for the good old USA.

Beneath the Bones, 3rd in the Hidden Valor Series by Candace Irving, is the best yet. Continuing the story of Kate Holland and her service dog Ruger, the Braxton Police Department detective has handled some serious murder cases using her Army CID skills and experience. Managing her PTSD and with a budding romance with Arash, a detective from a neighboring department, she has her hands full with more murders, bones dating back to her own father, and a meticulously planned potential environmental disaster by a veteran bent on destruction. With non-stop action and suspense, this is a page-turner that can’t be put down.

Ms. Irving/Irvin is my definite go to, first choice author for books that will keep you enthralled! Every page of Kate and Arash's journey to love amid the turmoil of their investigations leave your heart palpitating, your breathing stuttered and you mind so fixated on who, what and where that if a tornado hit my home I would miss it all because that would require setting down this amazing book and I am not sure I could!

It just pulls you in.

Horrible people vs the heroes who don’t want to be seen as heroes, and victims who can’t seem to find their way out of situations.
Diversion after diversion and then the ultimate accumulation of facts lead to all the final truths. Didn’t see the “who” coming. Expected the where. And live Arash and Ruger, Lou and Seth. Wanted to pop Brice but… yep. Just wanted to pop him one. Great Book!!

It is nice to see Kate & Arash (and Ruger!) becoming closer, although Ruger might want Arash for himself! Trent is a new character that you love to hate. What is wrong with that guy? Well, just wait. And old skull is found and takes Kate on a journey to find out what happened. Come along for the ride! Can’t wait for the next book to see how Ruger is going to react!

The complex plot moved smoothly...

The story line about domestic violence was very realistic.

I would have enjoyed more details on Ruger's training. Some dogs are born to excel, but at everything?

Beneath The Bones - a review by Rosemary Kenny.

A Kate Holland Suspense, Hidden Valor, Book 3 by Candace Irving is the eerily-titled Beneath The Bones and it's exactly what starts off Deputy Kate's latest case, with as a long-hidden skeleton emerges from a riverbank.

Distracted by her PTSD, her relationship with Detective Arash Moradi, an obnoxious new work partner with a secret, a suddenly close-mouthed Sheriff - and links to her past that have come close to home in the present - Kate and her faithful K9, Ruger, have to face great danger while she fights her inner demons, trying to get enough closure and self-validation to move on towards a brighter future.
Can Kate find the strength to accept love and believe she truly deserves a HEA?

To find the answers you long for, get your copy of Beneath The Bones, the riveting thriller by Candace Irving that's guaranteed to grip you firmly by the imagination throughout, today!

What a brilliant book!

This is the third Kate Hudson book and she shows us yet again what a courageous and skilled investigator she is, aided of course by her faithful canine Ruger.

It's an intricate tale that moves along at a rapid pace. We have a particularly distasteful villain seeking revenge with a nefarious vindictive scheme.

Candace Irving cleverly blends her first hand military experience with police procedures, counselling, domestic abuse and sexism. It,a a heady mix! This series just gets better and better.
