The Race

Rate this book
The pictures and text of this book concentrate on the human involvement with the Race. Thrilling triumph, deep despair, highest sportsmanship, sacrifice, loyalty, toil, hope, money, inspiration, - and tragedy - are all part of it. For nearly half a century the Indianapolis Motor Speedway has offered for all the world an arena for men to match their competitive urges and their inventiveness. Technical gain may be a by-product of the struggle. But one thing is basic. It is a Race. It is a drama of brave and skillful men. We have avoided names in the telling of it, though you will surely recognize many. On the closing page you will find each picture identified as fully as possible. Our aim is to blend the pictures and words to recreate the whole experience. Its parts we have called, with a nod to alliteration, the Preparation, the Practice, the Pressure, the People, the Proof and the Postscript.
