Le stelle secondo Clara (L'Acchiappastorie)

Rate this book

Clara Voyant is a light read and an enjoyable middle-grade book that narrates the story of Clara Costa, a middle-grade school student from Kensington Middle School who is one of the new staff of the school's Gazette. She dreams of having her own column from the said school newspaper, but their editor Wesley Ferris gave her writing tasks that are not suitable to Clara's taste. The most notable one that Wesley gave her was when she was assigned to write the weekly horoscope section.

Writing the said portion has made people around her to notice that she got the special gift to foresee. Clara's mom wants her to develop her talent, but what I like about Clara is that she is determined to not let anyone dictates wants she wants in life. That is one of the remarkable lessons that kids will learn from reading this book written by Rachelle Delaney; we should pursue our dream because just like what Clara's grandma Elaine always say to her and her mom Gaby, "we're in charge of our own destinies."

Clara can’t wait to write some groundbreaking investigative journalism pieces for her school newspaper, the Kensington Middle School Gazette. When she’s given the job of writing the paper’s horoscope column instead, Clara is devastated. She doesn’t even believe in horoscopes or anything else she considers “Woo!”

She’s hoping to only have to write the column once to pay her dues and then move on to more interesting articles, like the mystery of the missing school mascot, but the horoscopes Clara has written are coming true. All of a sudden everyone around her thinks she’s clairvoyant, despite her protests that she is most definitely not.

I liked Clara’s mother, who practices herbalism, has a group of new friends that Clara disapproves of and paints her home in colours Clara finds outrageous, like Ripe Tomato and Mango Tango. Clara’s mother’s friends were a fun, eccentric bunch.
“Seriously?” Was there no end to these people’s weirdness?
I also liked Clara’s best friend, Maeve, who’s enthusiastic, loves crime dramas and wants to star in the school play.

Clara, though? I didn’t like her much at all. I understand that she’s missing her old home and her grandmother, who’s recently moved away, but her enthusiasm for most things was underwhelming at best and her attitude needed a serious realignment for the majority of the book. I didn’t like the way she judged everything she didn’t personally believe in and the people who did believe in those things.
“You can’t predict the future,” she told herself aloud. Could she?
I would have loved to have explored the Mystic Mart, which is like “Walmart, but with voodoo dolls.” Although we do solve the mystery of who stole the school mascot, we never learn the identity of the Counterfeit Kid.

Thank you so much to NetGalley and Puffin, an imprint of Penguin Random House Canada Young Readers, for the opportunity to read this book. I’m rounding up from 3.5 stars.

Clara is a rational thinking girl who doesn't believe in anything magical or that doesn't have a logical explanation. But sadly for her it seems that can't escape those crazy ideas, not in her school where she's doom to write the horoscope in the school newspaper, not in the new weird neighborhood where she lives with her mother, Gabby.

✸ Setting

In this book you won't find magic per se. There's no spells or X-men powers, keep in mind that it's not a fantasy book. Instead, the magical aspects are what you'd find in real life. Horoscopes, healing herbs, séance. Is really refreshing in a middle grade contemporary.
The market where Clara lives it's very interesting and diverse. I'd love to see something like that where I live! It could have been detailed a little more if Clara would had been interested in it though.

✸ Characters

I really liked these characters! I could relate to Clara because I have the same doubts about zodiac, the magical power of healing herbs and love potions, or communicating with spirits (though I WANT to believe, the rational part of my brain makes it hard). She's a good representation of a 11 year old girl.
Gabby was fun too, but most of the time she felt more like Clara's older sister than her mother. Especial mention to Gabby's new friends, Lily and Terence. I LOVE how sweet and quirky they are.
Secondary characters were all great and we could knew a little of each of them.

Overall an awesome read, no matter if you are a middle grader or a grown up ♡✧( ु•⌄• )

Me now loved this story and I know 5th/6th grade-Stephanie would have *really* loved this story.

Clara is a practical girl that has to come to terms with her more bohemian mother/new lifestyle after they move to the colorful Kensington Market. She meets Maeve, who turns out to be a wonderful and supportive best friend and one of the best friend characters I’ve read in awhile. Clara and Maeve solve a mystery and discover some talents and themselves along the way.

This book has so many things I appreciate in a middle-grade book - a bright protagonist, good friendship, an interesting school setting.
Add in a quirky cast of characters (including some ghost-hunting neighbors), some paranormal aspects, and a vibrant market setting, and it really worked for me!
Plus - that cover!

I can’t wait to introduce some of my students to Clara Voyant.

This was adorable and fun and quirky and I was in deep with this one. MG is killing it, and this is just the latest edition of Middle Grade showing its fine writing skills.

This book is really light and fluffy and quirky. It has an intriguing premise of a girl who is determined to write a hard hitting piece of junior high journalism but somehow gets stuck with writing the horoscope -to her horror and to the delight of her hippy mother and her morbid new friends. When her horoscopes start coming true, Clara has to start confronting what she thought she knew and who she might be. I loved how all of the storylines came together with Clara's new talent, her desire to be something more, and the mystery of who stole the school mascot. All of them were intriguing, and each provided a cool, fascinating dynamic to the story.

I thought the characters really shone for this novel, too. The cast is full of quirky, eccentric characters, and I loved each new addition that popped out. Clara was a wonderful narrator, and I loved going on her journey. You could feel her desire to do more and be more, and I totally felt her joys and pains so easily through the pages. I loved her best friend, too, and each time she mentioned her and her dad's obsession with morbid crime shows, she won my hard even more. Clara's mom and her kooky haunted realtor friends were a lot of fun, too.

The writing was quite good too. It was easy and breezy, and it was...hang on, I'll let you guess...fun. It had a whimsical feel, and I could never quite pinpoint if this was going to be straight up contemporary or magical realism. Delaney created a super cool vibe, and I totally loved the setting. She did a really cool job of making it feel like a bit of magic in the marketplace where Clara lived. I could pictured a lot of it super clearly.

Overall, this was a lot of fun. There was something just missing to make this a favorite, but it really was such a great read. It wasn't quite spooky spooky for my readathon, but it was full of quirky, eccentric characters that had me in love with intriguing and fascinating storylines that merged together perfectly. Yet another MG book that is totally killing it. 5 crowns and a Tiana rating!

A totally delightful read featuring gentle mother-daughter conflict, lots of middle school drama, a mystery, potential psychic ability, all set in Toronto's vibrant Kensington Market and told from Clara's slightly dry, pitch-perfect tween first person perspective.

Now I haven’t read a “children’s” book in a very long time. That being said, I liked Rachelle Delaney’s “Clara Voyant.” It was a light, easy read that made me smile. I often found myself reminiscing on my own elementary school experiences. And I loved the fact that it was set in Toronto.

Oddly enough I found some of the names of the characters a little out there and distracting. I had trouble following at the beginning since she referred to both her mother and grandmother in their given names. A few questions / observations I had included: How could Clara’s grandmother Elaine not find the time to have a quick phone conversation with her granddaughter after up and moving to Florida? And does Clara’s mother even know her at all? Always asking her to partake in activities that Clara does not enjoy in the slightest. Elementary school has completely changed since I last attended (overworked students needing to form a union? A constant fear of committing social suicide? Social media. I didn’t even know what any of this was at that age). Poor Mrs. Major was misunderstood. Why would anyone eat 10-year-old Tootsie Rolls? How did Wesley not get punished for her wrongdoing? So many questions, so few answers.

This storyline could easily be turned into a series. Lots of potential for further plot and character development.

I was provided an ARC via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Clara moved to a new neighborhood recently and doesn’t really like it. The people here are too weird and it doesn’t help that all her mother is talk about herbs, ghosts and powers.
What Clara wants to do is stick to the fact and become a journalist. She actually writes at her school’s paper but the editor only gives her small articles to do until she gets her own column… The horoscopes. Everything she hates…

I found the plot pretty well done even though I didn’t like the way it ended.
Overall, I found it to be okay but the characters really annoyed me most of the times. And I do mean all the characters. The parents, as well as the students, the administration, everyone.
But still, the story took me by surprise from time to time and it was a short read...

4.5! I'm just smiling and smiling and smiling.
___

This book was absolutely positively adorable and I loved every second of it. It was a fast and funny read, and I found the zodiac element very entertaining. Plus, it is set in Canada, specifically Toronto, so stay tuned for an appearance by Patriotic Rendz later on in this review!

What I Liked:
Characters:

Clara: My fellow Cancerian, she was an absolute rock star and I loved her! Clara at the beginning of the book would probably roll her eyes (just a little) at the fact that I called her a Cancerian and say it’s all woo! But she goes through such growth in this book! She learns that its okay to embrace some of your eccentric abilities and that it’s important to pursue every goal you have with all your heart. Clara was intelligent, caring and quite practical throughout the whole book, until her sense of adventure kicks in and she finds herself doing things she might have never imagined doing before! It was all quite fun and I really enjoyed reading about her!

Clara’s mom, Gabby, was quite–how do I put this–special, she really loved all things supernatural, and while I felt that this sometimes blinded her from seeing Clara’s distress, I think she was fun addition to the story!

Each and every character had this spunk that I just loved to read about!

Zodiac fun!:

Clara writes her own original horoscopes for each sign in this book and the way that Delaney made them play out was fantastic! The way in which her fortunes affected different people in Clara’s life was both hilarious and heart warming. Clara’s journey to managing her clairvoyance was exciting and caused a lot of trouble, but it was all in all a perfect element to keep the plot moving forward!

It was all so Punny!

The puns in this book! Can we start by appreciating the title because I am still not over its genius! Trust me there are a lot more puns in this story to be read and laughed at. As an aspiring journalist, Clara goes out of her way to make catchy headlines and whats catchier than a well put pun? But honestly this book was hilarious. I’m usually just a silent laugher when it comes to reading, but this book actually made me giggle.

*Incoming of a red and white dressed blogger*

The Setting:

Hi everyone, this is your new captain speaking, Patriotic Rendz! And I have dropped by to yell about how perfect the setting was for this book!

Other than taking place in the homeland of Rendz, this book takes place in one of–what I might say– the most funkiest and eccentric places in the city. Kensington Market.

Kensington Market in Toronto is a neighbourhood filled with different stores, restaurants and attractions. And it is home to some…very exciting people. It’s the place where you’ll find lots of interesting stores that sell interesting products, similar to how Clara’s mom sells herbs and natural medicines/elixirs. You can find a psychic on basically every corner and it has its fair share of dark alleys.

It was the perfect setting for this book because it contrasted so well with Clara’s personality. Where she wanted the pristine and beautiful sanctuary of High Park (A beautiful park in the city), she instead got the very rundown and outlandish market. (The market is not all bad, but is definitely not where Clara would choose to live!)

What I Disliked:
Not much really. Could it lag here and there, a little. But it was a really short book and it kept me tuned in for the most part so not much for me to complain about!

Overall, I loved this and clearly Patriotic Rendz has never been more happy about a book set in Canada. It was fun, fast and colourful. There were lots of funny moments and triumphant moments and other moments where I was quite quite taken aback with a wide-eyed expression. All I’ll say is that people really do love their horoscopes!

Rating: 4.5 / 5 stars

Recommend: Absolutely! So much fun!

MY RATING: 4/5 STARS

I received a copy from Penguin Random House Canada in exchange for a honest review.

I don't typically read middle-grade novels. It usually has to do with something about the writing style that really ticks me off. Like it's either too simplistic or characters are too animated. Although, Clara Voyant, is a middle-grade novel with the writing style I just described, I found myself thoroughly enjoying the story after a few chapters in. Clara Voyant is a delightful read---and not just to younger readers.

Clara Voyant tells the story of a middle-grader who comes from a family full of 'woo'. Her mother is a single parent who believes in healing the body, mind, soul with natural medicines and a bunch of other stuff that sounds like it's completely made up. She's completely different from her mother. While her mother is whimsical and fun, Clara is serious and believes in science. There's no such thing as supernatural abilities or 'woo'. It seems the only person to fully understand Clara is her grandmother but when she moves out of Toronto and to Florida, Clara feels like the only thing stable and normal in her life is gone. Aside from what's happening at home, Clara is trying to navigate her way through school as a reporter for the school's newspaper. But instead of getting the good and gritty investigative pieces to write, she's stuck with horoscopes! The last thing she believes in. Suddenly, the horoscopes come true. Kind of. Some don't. Some do. But they were fun to read! Put in a mystery of the missing mascot, family issues, and friendship, Clara Voyant was an entertaining and fun read!

I loved how some characters turned out to be more than what they were initially presented to be. For example, the school's scary/intimidating janitor turned out to be a talented artist who once studied art in France but stopped when people told her she could never making a living off of it. It was sad to read a character like that in a middle school grade book as it was realistic and true for many older readers. I just hope younger readers learn to follow their passion or at least not be afraid of pursuing their passions in life.

The only reason why I knocked off a whole star for this book is because the ending bugged me. I mean this book is directed to the younger generation who still needs to learn the basic ideas of morals and how to learn how to properly deal with their emotions/thoughts. When we found out who really stole the mascot hat and how Clara did nothing to bring justice to the school, it felt like the moral of the story is to let bad things people did go and give them a second chance without any consequences. It didn't feel like justice was served and resulted a bitter taste in my mouth.

MY RECOMMENDATION

Definitely recommend this book to any of you who want to try exploring different genres or have a younger reader who needs their next amazing read!

Thank you so much to NetGalley and Puffin Canada for gracing me with a copy of this light and breezing book. This was exactly what I needed on a Saturday morning filled with freezing rain!

This middle grade story stars Clara, a skeptic of the paranormal who is assigned the horoscopes column at her school paper. This in turn earns her the name Clara Voyant, much to her chagrin.
All she wants is her chance to prove her talent as a serious journalist and has now been saddled with something she doesn't even believe in? UGH, the humanities!
This is a cute story about friendship, self reflection, and a dash of mystery thrown in for good measure. The characters are extremely likeable and interesting without anyone stealing the spotlight completely. It was a fun and quick read that certainly brightened my morning.

This book had the potential to be a cute contemporary with an astrological twist, but disappointingly never got there. Clara is extremely judgmental from page one and while her very black-or-white thinking works fine in the beginning, it is never challenged nor does she seem to grow. Hearing her thoughts on people was difficult at times. Sometimes she is rude and other times down right nasty, including to her own mother (who yes, is a flaky sort of character, but the condescension she regards her with is on a whole other level). While we do get the idea that she is meant to grow as a character and become more accepting, her actions and thoughts don't really reflect that, and more to the point, she seems to be forgiven without ever apologizing.

Outside of Clara and her relationships with other characters, the plot is too light to save this story.

Clara's passion for writing lands her as a "Newsies" in the school newspaper....but her assignments leave her longing to write a more 'hard-hitting investigative piece' if only given the opportunity! Trying to plead her case, Clara is given a new assignment...writing horoscopes.....not the type of journalism she had in mind! Determination and creativity take Clara into a new direction where she discovers things about herself that turns her world topsy turey! I love this quirky, at times practical character that is Clara! This story is filled with all the foibles of middle grade life, family relationships that will have the reader eagerly turning every page and end with a huge sigh of satisfaction at the end!!
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for grades 4-8!!

I've been trying to think about what to say in this review for over a month now, and I'm still not sure. This was a cute middle grade contemporary with a bit of mystery and mysticism. Clara is at a new school and has moved into a new neighborhood. I enjoyed the little plot throughout, but other than that I found it to be simplistic. I would say that this is a middle grade that doesn't hold up for older audiences.

"A wise person once told me that people are in charge of their own destinies. You can't decide what will happen to you, but you can decide how you'll react."
The book is based on Clara, a girl who doesn't believe in mystical powers & superstitions and calls all those things "woo". Clara and her mother move into a tiny apartment above a herbal remedy shop in Kensington market when her grandmother moves to Florida and Clara doesn't like the change and misses her grandmother. As she's really interested in journalism, she joins the newspaper staff at her new middle school to polish her journalistic skills but the editor instead puts her in charge of writing horoscopes instead. Her worst fears are realized when they actually start coming true. But when her school mascot disappears, she has an amazing opportunity to prove her investigative skills using her mystical powers.
Initially what caught my eye was the beautiful cover and the really clever play on the word "clairvoyant."
I really loved the plot of the story and liked the fact that the characters weren't two dimensional. The character & personality of Maeve, Clara's best friend was my favorite. She's an amazing friend & such a super cheerful, upbeat person.
The book was a very fun, cute & light read and I absolutely adored it. I found the horoscope thing really unique & interesting. Even though I'm not really a firm believer in horoscopes or astrological signs myself, I do think sometimes they are true and funnily enough Clara's prediction for the Scorpios in the end is definitely advice that I needed and can be totally applied to the situation I'm personally in right now. Is that spooky or what? haha!
4.3/5 stars for me.

I got an ARC copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Clara Voyant was a book about Clara Costa, a girl who didn't believe in things like magic or "woo" her grandmother, Elaine, would say. Unlike her grandmother, her mother Gaby, believed and liked these kind of things. Clara and Gaby just moved out to a new apartment in a new neighborhood called Kensington Market. While, Elaine moved out to West Palm Beach. Clara missed her grandmother and her "normal" things so much because Clara thought that her new life wasn't normal anymore.

Clara was a newbie newsie in the Gazette (her middle school newspaper). Wesley, the editor, gave Clara unimportant things to write about until one day she gave Clara to work on Horoscopes which one of the things Clara didn't believe in. Also, Wesley gave Clara a new name "Clara Voyant". Soon, she realised about her power, clairvoyant that was.

It told us about Maeve too, Maeve was Clara's best friend. Also, it told us about Clara's activities in discovering many things. Like what happened to Mrs. Major, Wesley, and herself.

The book is easy to read and the cover is so beautiful. I fall in love with the cover. 😍

Thank you for writing this book, Rachelle!

Kids don't always agree with what parents ideals are. Clara is stuck with a "woo" mother who has a beaded doorway, and has a great aunt who was a witch, and makes herbal remedies for people. Clara just wants a normal life, with normal kids, in a normal school. And she wants to be a journalist.

Very realistic feelings from Clara. Fun little story, which is about more than Clara writing a horoscope that appears to come true.

Quick reading, as it is middle-school, but fun, with a slight mystery involved, of which I thought I figured out, but it turned out I did not, though the clues were there.

Well done. Kids and adults will enjoy this one.

This is a cute little book with a cuter message at its heart. While the story picked up some pace only almost after half the book and the dialogues had rough edges, they are not huge complaints. I loved hanging out at Kingston Market with Clara and Gaby and their weird, kind friends. I wish I were clairvoyant too. I wish I could see my dear ones' fortune. There is so much magic in this book. A treat for young readers and readers like me who love books written for young readers. Yaaay!

I loved this middle grade book! This is a cozy story about a girl named Clara who wants to be a journalist and writes horoscopes for her school newspaper while also investigating a school mystery. Clara soon realizes that her horoscopes may be coming true. Clara is also adjusting to a new neighborhood after moving. There is a lot of talk about astrology/horoscopes and witchcraft in this novel which was really fun.

The main character Clara is very smart and snarky and has a wonderful friendship with her best friend. I really liked Clara and the other characters, they were very mature and funny. I can't wait to read some of this authors other books!
