I honestly hated this book. I vibes so hard with the first book both when I first read it and then when I re-read it before this book. This book was a miss for me. Part of the reason is that book 1 established hopes I had for the characters. I loved Gareth and Vix and even Baz as a 2-3 relationship. That's what I was hoping for after book 1 (but mostly Gareth and Vixen) because of the soft spot and gentle way Gareth cared for Vix.
In this book, a lot more is confirmed. WHY Baz and Vix sleep together, but also that Vale and Gareth also both sleep with Vix and that Baz sleeps with others. So, it fleshed out the dynamic I was dying to know more about and I wouldn't have been mad about some kind of relationship with the four of them, or them just going as they were for however like. I liked what was established.
However, due to this, Paris was a giant homewrecker in my eyes and I couldn't vibe with him. He was VERY reminiscent of Edovard aka Puppy from Jennifer Cody's assassin series. Both are more or less dumb as rocks, but very introspective about characters emotional health's/goodness (Edovard saw peoples shine, Paris saw heart shadows, and both had plenty to say about grumpy guts, head pats, rough edges, etc etc) only Paris had the added addition of a shadow animal. Well. Edovard had literally avatar of Evil and minions so, there's still some similarity. While it worked for Edovard and Cody, it did not work for Paris and Elliven. this is just my opinion, in case anyone wants to cut in that THEY vibes.
The problem for me was Paris was too possessive in a bad, usurping what I viewed as a working established relationship of family and becoming a homewrecker. (And before anyone wants to use Paris logic to say it wasn't perfect bc of a b c (alike Vix escaping for an hour) let me remind you that NO system is perfect which means not even suffocating Paris can perfect dynamics even if it's written to make it LOOK like he can). Paris himself said possessive can also be creepy, it's two sides of a coin and depends on a persons interpretation. MY intepretation as a reader was it bordered on negative. All the while having inner thoughts on how to maintain and respect boundaries, and good people, and having no claim to Vix yet he still doesn't like anyone's hands on Vix, wants to be the sole claim. Now, he didn't toxically act on it, but I still saw him as a threat to the dynamic. probably as much as he saw Vale, Baz and Gareth as a threat to him having his want-to-be possession. For me it didn't work, because I had already sided with and LIKED the Collective, and so to me THIER feelings came first; this includes Gareth being melancholy bc Vix no longer needs him the same way. Especially since that was a dymnaic and softness I LOVED in book one. And it especially hurt (and kind of came out of nowhere) because after Vix and Paris meet, Gareth takes Vix into the office and they snuggle, as per their routine of care and comfort, and Vix is fine, Then Gareth goes in to kiss him, and Vix is not fine, muses that he needs to still be petted for GARETHS sake, but when Gareth pets him all of a sudden it doesn't hit the same and Gareth gets melancholy. But...the cuddles moments before seemed to hit the same? He was all even up in the armpit? So it felt VERY fucking abrupt to me.
There's apparently drama over Vale using Apple to boot Paris out of the house, a moment I didn't mind personally and found both funny and kinship over, that results in part of the house blowing up and Adam making good in his threats and destroying Gareth's office over, but I only read about that happening in the end bc I skipped a good chunk of the book to see how it ended. I was no longer interested in the meat of the book, nor was I interested in sex between Paris and Vix. They didn't have chemistry to me, Paris to me is a home wrecking usurper whose character I also found lacking bc where as the aforementioned Edovard was all fluff, this dude was like possession and dominance hiding behind fluff and moral lectures; which missed the mark for me. And I think Vix's family absolutely had the right to be WARY at least over the change Paris was bringing into their lives using their beloved Vix. because he WAS a major change in many respects, which is why I don't begrudge them not handling it....better. their entire axis shifted too.
in the end, Vix got his happy ending with Paris and still had his family.....but I just wasn't vibing.
