Maggie Scratch searching for seeds

Maggie's explorations of sex, relationships and the wider world sweep her from teenage fumblings in respectable, middle class America across Europe to heartbreak on the sands of a Greek Island. Heartbreak? – Just another 'splat', Maggie would say. There are more of those before Maggie, a mature, independent woman, living and working in Ibiza, looks back on what's become of America, from the rural, philosophical perspective of life among the Ibicencos.

At last, Maggie sees how much of her search has been fueled by a search for the father for the child she secretly desires – how will a mature, independent woman manage to plant this seed? And, if she does, how will it affect her fragile relationship with Izzy, the 'vasectomized' artist who shares her sunny mountainside home?

From a recommendation by novelist Rosalie
Maggie Scratch is an enchanting character and this is a sparkler of a book. Follow Maggie from Jewish Philadelphia in the 1970s, through a whole series of encounters, adventures, disasters and fun as she explores the world of sex, drugs, music, dance, relationships and life, before finishing up on the idyllic (sort of) island of Ibiza with her partner, the charming and wonderful painter, Izzy. Maggie is left with just one longing – for a child. Izzy’s had a vasectomy. But we’re not finished yet...

Maggie tells it raw, honest and funny, and if you’re a baby boomer of her generation (like me), you’ll find plenty of resonance with the landmarks of your own life...

Like sitting down with a good friend you haven't seen in years to listen to her tales. Honest and personal, and full of intimate secrets and juicy stories. Maggie Scratch lets you into her world, and into her head and her heart. I want to stay there with her, and keep hearing more...
A great read for anyone with a love for exploring and embracing life, full of nostalgia and sincerity.

Dreamy, sensuous and evocative: "rosemary flowers and the heady nutmeg figs. In the late evening, the earth cools down so loud I can hear it crack." Maggie Scratch is filled with beautiful, contrasting images and situations. It is a synestheic journey, a portrait of a time, of the people she finds while she builds and searches for her identity. It is also a potrait of places (Elkins Park, New York, Mexico, San Francisco, Ibiza...) I enjoyed visiting through these pages. A really powerful book!

What an enjoyable read!
Gross has a great sense of humor that tickled me constantly.
Boomer tales and times are close to my heart and so I flashed back to those days, thanks to her ability to create the climate and language of those times.
This is the kind of book that has a high pleasure content and no pretentions, thus I give it 5 stars!
