At Morton College, learning comes with a hefty price. The search committee tasked with hiring a new president is on the brink of chaos. A student production of The Three Musketeers devolves into a bloody sword fight.
Join Cassandra Sato and the students in a Death 101 course as they put their detective skills to the test. Unraveling the tangled web of secrets and lies, they must act quickly as the college's very future hangs in the balance.
Kelly Brakenhoff is the author of 17 books and a seasoned ASL interpreter. She splits her writing energy between two series: cozy mysteries set on a college campus and children’s books featuring Duke the Deaf Dog.
In 2025, two of her children’s books were selected for the CBC Favorites Award Lists, honored by teachers and librarians nationwide for excellence in children's literature. Parents, kids, and educators love the Duke the Deaf Dog books and activity guides because they introduce ASL and the Deaf community through engaging stories.
And if you enjoy a smart female sleuth, want to learn more about Deaf culture, or have lived in a place where livestock outnumber people, the Cassandra Sato Mystery series will have you connecting the dots faster than a group project thrown together the night before it’s due.
A proud mom to four adults, head of the dog-snuggling department, and grandma to a growing brood of perfectly behaved grandkids, Kelly and her husband call Nebraska home.
Cozies come in all shapes and forms, and it's entertaining to experience the wide range being offered these days. The Cassandro Sato Mysteries take place on a college campus in Nebraska, but the main character and her family hail from Hawaii. Between watching over the campus as the VP of Student Affairs and hanging out with her visiting parents, it's a tough few weeks for our protagonist, especially when a fight during a campus play leads to a devastating injury for one of the performers. But was he actually the victim of a would-be killer, or is something even more nefarious going on?
I enjoy the honesty and raw attitude of the characters in this series. Whether it's the overprotective parents, the bickering faculty, or the one-liners that sometimes put people easily in their places, I always find a new character to laugh and shake my head at. In this installment, they're also searching for a new college president, and the candidates are uber interesting. Toss in the continued focus on deaf students and an inclusive nature, this is a gem for those looking for a slice of reality in the university world.
I'm all caught up in the series again and looking forward to the next arc when the newly hired president begins and either drives Cassandra batty or finally, with all hope, gives her someone to partner with as they right so many wrongs at the school, just beginning with 4+ murders in the last year!
This is the fourth entry in this series. It has a lot going on but has a great mystery. A person is killed doing an act of the Three Musketeers. They are also doing a criminal investigation course day at Morton College. It also seem like our heroine Cassandra has really grown and accepted her new life in Nebraska helping students as the VP or Student Affairs. It's a great example of an academic cozy mystery so far.
I love this cozy mystery series set in a small college town in Nebraska. Dr. Cassandra Sato, the Vice President of Student Affairs at Morton College, was hosting her parents visiting from her home state, Hawai'i. Showing them around the town and college included attending a student production of The Three Musketeers where one of the actors was fatally injured during a sword fight.
At the time Cassandra was on a search committee to hire a new college president. The members' relationships and grievances factor into such decisions, in Cassandra's case hiring the 4th college president in a year!
Other characters add depth to the story, Marcus her boyfriend Andy the head of Security, Shannon, a Deaf professor, and her women friends and work colleagues Meg and Cassie.
Another very good book for this series. Cassandra is a dedicated admin. of her college and is always doing her best to help the college move forward and help the students. She finds roadblocks at every corner and keeps digging until all are cleared. On to the next book in the series for me and can't wait. Happy Reading
