"Well, you have armour. It's the lyre and the goose that have me a bit confused."
The Dragon War has left its mark on everyone, and Reverie Rosetia is no exception. After her brother is struck down in a skirmish, it is on her to take up the family legacy of greatness – no matter what her plans might have been before that. She must find his sword and bring it home.
With no better place to start her search, Reverie arrives at the Collection, an isolated place full of magical oddities and artifacts. Soon after her arrival, the eclectic visitors to the Collection and its owner find themselves trapped inside. A magical force has broken free and is determined to break them, one by one. Can Reverie solve the mystery of how their attacker manifested and put it right before it is too late?
Reverie meets adventurers Lark and Wren as the trio are trapped in this claustrophobic and irreverent fantasy mystery, which may have more to do with Lark and Wren’s chase than they think…
Aimee Donnellan is an author of fantasy adventures and romances centering queer women. She loves to write about bisexuals even more chaotic and disastrous than herself.
She lives in Wellington, New Zealand with her fiancè — who helps her write and worldbuild — and dreams of dog ownership when not playing video games or Dungeons and Dragons.
The Collection Awakens is the second book in the episodic fantasy series Catastrophe Incoming, written by the Kiwi author Aimee Donnellan. In this second instalment, we will be spectators of a locked room mystery, with the humor that characterizes this saga, and with some characters from The Chase Begin returning.
After her brother is struck down in a skirmish, Reverie Rosetia is ready to continue carrying the legacy of greatness associated to her family; but firstly, she must find his sword. With her lyre and Ferdinand, the evil goose, she travels to the Collection, a place full of magical artifacts and oddities. However, soon she finds herself trapped inside the Collection, in the company of the eccentric owner and the weird visitors this place seems to attract; but that's not the worst, as a magical object seems to have unleashed a force that is trying to mentally break the group one by one. Solving how this attacker works inside, and opening the collection is a mystery that will need of Reverie's ability.
If there's something that shines in The Chase Begins is the characters, and that doesn't change in The Collection Awakens; apart from the own Reverie being sassy and chaotic, the company of Ferdinand just adds a bigger point of hilarity to the situation. Lark and Wren reappear in this volume, a charming pair, and we can't forget to spotlight how eccentric the owner was.
The pacing is slower in comparison, getting more time to admire the marvels that are contained inside the Collection, while also allowing the characters to take a more protagonist role, instead of just moving with the situation.
The Collection Awakens is extremely fun, the perfect sequel to The Chase Begins; if you like queer fantasy and want a great bite, you should try the Catastrophe Incoming series. I cannot wait to see how Reverie works together with Lark and Wren in the next books.
Just like the first book (the chase begins) the collection awakens is amazing as well. I enjoyed being in this world with the characters again. And we got to meet Ferdinand the goose. He might be my favorite character of all time.
This book is a lot slower than the chase begins. And that is not necessarily a bad thing but I expected it to be the same pace as the first book especially since I read them almost back to back. I was just taken a back a bit and it took me out the story a bit in the beginning.
But despite the fact that it is slower paced than the chase begins I really enjoyed everything about this book and would recommend this anyone who wants to reads a fun and entertaining fantasy.
Thank you so much to Aimee for an ARC of this incredible book. I'm so happy to be back in this world and with these characters, and I must say, I might have enjoyed this novella more than the first!
Reverie was such a great protagonist, she's flirty and fun, sassy and mysterious. She's definitely someone I can't wait to be in the POV of again. Not only that, but she came with Ferdinand, the most chaotic demon goose you ever did meet! Seriously, his chaotic behaviour was such a breath of fresh air, I really enjoyed his little outbursts and his dialogue with Reverie.
The other characters were entertaining, sweet, and interesting all at once. Ernest was such a cutie pie who I hope we get a cameo of again, Bela was a badass, and of course, we're back with Lark and Wren who will forever have my heart. As a group, this lot, can't forget Grena, made for an interesting read, each bringing different traits to the table. I was never mistaking one for the other, and there wasn't one I disliked either which is always nice. They all felt well-rounded and developed, which is something I think Aimee is brilliant at.
While this book takes place over a short time and in the same place, I think it worked really well. The Collection is full of mystery magical objects, and would definitely be my choice of place to be trapped. Not only that, but these mystery objects are the new cause of chaos in this story, and when the characters aren't even sure which object is causing said chaos, it only makes for more fun. The element of mystery is definitely strong in this book, especially later on, and it makes for a very entertaining read.
Without spoilers, I cannot wait to see how Reverie weaves her way into the story going forward, and while this book was a step back from Nightingale, I didn't necessarily think it felt like filler. As a series of novellas, I think the introduction of Reverie was done very well, even if it's not continued from the main plot of the first book. Aimee truly has a way with words and storytelling, and I cannot wait to see what happens next.
Thank you to Aimee for the ARC in exchange for an honest review!
I had a blast with this funny, irreverent fantasy mystery. Anarchic magical objects and sentient malignant forces breaking from their careful equilibrium always appeal to me and this didn't disappoint.
The characters are a delight and they shine in Aimee's banterous dialogue sparkling with innuendo and flashes of sincere emotion. I love my chaotic, horny main character Reverie who would rather die than admit her feelings and the flirtations she forges with basically the entire cast.
I LOVE THE GOOSE. THE GOOSE IS SO GOOD. THE GOOSE IS THE REASON I WANTED TO READ THIS AND HE WAS PERFECT.
I'm not usually a fantasy reader but this is the kind of fantasy I like best. Funny and honest, mix of soft/hard magic system, very solid craft-wise but not too highbrow in prose!
I wanted to read this ARC in time for release so I chose to read it as standalone - and it works great that way! It introduces the characters and magic system with just enough info and intrigue, and it's set in one room, so you're not missing anything about the setting. You definitely don't need Book 1 to enjoy this. However, it has left me with questions about some of the characters' backstories, which is why I'm going to go and buy Book 1 now!
Thank you Aimee for giving me an ARC of this book!
I really hesitated about the rating for this book, and the truth is, I'm still not sure if it's a 3.5 stars, or a 4 stars. And before I start, I want to preface this that The Collection Awakens is NOT bad, it's GOOD, it's just a bit slower than I expected. Let me tell you why.
Unfortunately, I think this book falls into the second book of a series syndrome. Aimee wanted to introduce Reverie as a main character, and she did so by creating a mystery in a specific setting... that doesn't seem to further the story at all? This book was written solely to introduce Reverie, and don't get me wrong, it's not a bad thing, I think I was just expecting we would get more intels and insides about Nightingale, Lark, Wren, and the Grand Mystery surrounding the Catastrophe Incoming series.
Now onto the plot and the characters. After her brother's recent (ish) death, Reverie and her best friend forever the evil goose and her horse are looking for his sword, and they end up at the Collection, which is basically a library but for magical objects. Enter Lark and Wren, who are sent there by accident it seems by the teleporting magical object. That's when shit hits the fan. Lark, Wren, Reverie, the owner of the Collection, and two other people are stuck there because some magic is targeting them. They have to fight against this evil magic as well as find what happened and who disrupted the order of things.
A classic mystery story that works well. The main character is, again, fleshed out and interesting. Reverie seems to be hiding something, and we don't know what or why. Her character gives us more information about the world Aimee created; we learn about some families and guilds, and we also discover a new form of magic. Her dynamic with Lark and Wren is intriguing, to say the least, as not only is she more often than not flirting with them, but she's also very intrigued and curious about them. And, let's all be honest here, her and Ferdinand (evil goose) are absolutely hilarious together. Ferdinand is a little sh*it and I want more of him.
Despite my little "disappointment" (if we can even call it that) that the book isn't what I expected it to be, the story in itself is good, although quite slow, as we literally stay in the same setting for the duration of the book. The resolution did leave some questions unanswered, which I hope we will get answers for in the next books; but the questions we're left with aren't vital to the bigger story, so if they do stay unanswered, this isn't that big of an issue either! All in all, The Collection Awakens did its job: we're introduced to a new character, her addition will further the story, and the smaller story of this book is completed.
So the start of this book was quite different from expected because it gives us a different main character. But it ended up being so cool to see Wren and Lark from this outside perspective. Our main character from this novella is also totally badass and fun to follow along so I was totally pleased with this POV switch.
This book takes place quite far away in a shop full of magical trinkets and items that makes the setting also completely different. But don't get me wrong it's clear in everything this is still the same series. It has the same vibes and themes like it's predecessor but it shakes up some of the things people might expect to stay the same within a series. This shop however was very cool and it was so much fun to hear all the items being described and have their own stories. The setting of the shop was also very much part of the story and I enjoyed it a lot how the story and the shop became one and the same.
The story of this novella being the customers and shop owner being trapped inside brings forth a mystery story where they try to figure out what is going on and who trapped them inside. There is so much great dialogue between the characters that I absolutely ate up and enjoyed. They try to work together but at the same time there is a lot of tension and nobody trusts each other. This brings that great mix of banter and hate that I tend to love in books.
The ending was fun and I didn't see it coming even though there was definitely some foreshadowing so that was well done. It gave me a very excited feel to be eager to see where this series continues.
4.25 stars rounded down I received an eARC and this was my honest review.
It took me a while to get into the first book, even with how fast paced it was, but this one took me by the metaphorical horns and dragged me in. While procrastinating reading another book, I ended up reading this entire book in a matter of hours, and I can’t say I’m complaining. I laughed at most of the jokes, and the dialogue cut me straight to the core so much so that I was practically reading out entire chapters to my friend of my favourite parts. Reveries character is such in contrast to Larks, that it pairs perfectly well with them and their personality, and the books blend seamlessly together. The goose was a joy, and not a part of me understands Ferdinand but I am here for the ride nonetheless. The only thing maybe stopping this from being a full five stars is that I wasn’t fully entranced with Ernests character in particular. I found myself intrigued by the other characters, especially with the tenseness of the mystery, but Ernest just kind of felt there. However, that might just be my bias for dramatic traumatic backstories, but I did love the part of this book where we learnt more about each character, especially Reverie. With how this series is going, I am more than excited to jump into the third book when it comes out, and I cannot wait to learn more about the world, the magic, and Wren in particular, because the snippets from this book only give me a thirst for more.
This is the perfect book for Whovians. The banter between Lark and Reverie is like Ten and River Song and I'm obssesed with it. The book is so truly fun. The story is about a magical collection of items coming to life, reaching into the depths of people's minds, pulling up their deepest emotions, and attempting to cut them down one by one. And every single interation is so vicerally emotional, you can feel how it changes the room and it's inhabitants every single time. And don't get me started on the character story here. The book acts as an introduction to Reverie as she joins our little murderer hunting group and not only are her own character, motivation, and struggles so well defined, it's also very clear how she'll connect with, and build very intimate levels of trust with the other two and that just makes me so eager to see how their relationships will unfold. And if that unfolding includes a thriving poly relationship, I would not be mad. And the book gave me the overwhelming desire to fight a goose. So that's cool. Overall I can't recommend this enough.
thank you so much to the author for gifting me an early copy in exchange for an honest review!!
i'm so invested in this series at this point, i need the rest of it like air 😱😱 even tho this one lacked the action of the 1st one, i loved the place where everything happens and the new set of characters we met. reverie is amaaaziiing and i loved reading the banter between lark, wren and her, which is why i'm excited for the next one. it gives more details to the magic system and how everything can change if one single thing is disrupted. as the 1st, it was very fast paced and it dwelved more in the MC's inner conflicts, we love some of those heheh can't wait for the rest of the books!! pick them up if you haven't yet, they are sooo good and perfect for a light read 😉
Thank you to the author for providing me a free ARC copy in exchange for a honest review.
This was such a fabulous read. The second entry in the "Catastrophe Incoming" series is from the POV of Reverie. She is sassy, flirty and full of fun quips, but underneath this performance seems to be guilt / something she doesn't wish for the rest of the world to see. And she is tied to a chaotic immortal goose.
I love a locked room mystery and this did not disappoint. The clever use of the timed element helped add some real tension to the story and the magical threat was also a great way of showing the backstories of the other characters who were locked in the collection.
Overall this was a treat to read and i will start on the next in the series immediately :)
Ok, I'll admit it, Ferdinand is probably worth one whole star by himself. He was so funny and evil; I can't wait to read the next book and see more of him. And the rest of the characters were great too, especially the protagonists. Reverie was a very complicated, very intriguing addition and it was delightful seeing Lark from someone else's perspective. The mystery was quite good and the worldbuilding was expanded on some more, but it's true that the characters and their relationships are the best part of this series.
In this really fun continuation of "The Chase begins" we follow a new character, Reverie, as she meets the MCs of the first book in a fun, magical Whodunnit. I'd never read books like these, where Agatha Christie's classical 'every suspect is in the room' happens in a collection of magical items, and involves a hefty deal of family trauma. It's also rare to really witness the formation of an adventuring party in fantasy, but I can sense that this little group is gonna bring interesting things... Can't wait for book 3!
I enjoyed this book more than the first. It was fun to read, I really enjoyed this one a lot! The person who took the teacup was a little predictable to me, I was able to guess it however, it was still incredibly clever and the fire illusions was so wonderfully descripted.
Lastly, I needed more of the goose! Can't wait for the future reads. Would recommend to fantasy lovers that like quick-paced, puzzles lovers, and a bit of flirtatiousness in their reads.
This one is a wild ride, pure chaos! Donnellan's world building really shines through with the exploration of a series of magical artifacts, as well as the whole intricate system that weaves them and our favorite adventurers together. We're introduced to a new, even more excentric member of the party and get a healthy dose of lore from the protagonists of Book #1 too!
Back with more characters to love, and a certain evil goose, Aimee Donnellan brings mystery and intrigue to her second book in the Catastrophe Incoming series. Reverie is fun, flirty, and a breath of fresh air as we reenter a world of chaos and magic.
REVIEW TO COME I BETA READ THIS AND IT WAS REALLY FUCKING GOOD BUT IM GONNA REREAD THE ARC TO DO A PROPER REVIEW!!! GENERAL VIBE IS GLASS ONION BUT EVERYONE IS FLIRTING WITH EACH OTHER AND THERES AN EVIL GOOSE
The story is short and sweet, develops the characters well, and makes you bite your nails in anticipation! It feels predictable, but it keeps you on your toes and makes you question everything!
