Hard Knock Life begins with Bane robbing a bank.

Even you can’t think you’re strong enough to take on thirty cops.

Suddenly twelve children run up to Bane and surround him.

Bane is running some sort of halfway house for children. He takes them in and gives them food and clothes. The cops keep a barrier around it but the kids get there anyway from Metropolis, New York and Boston. Tim has come in pretending to be another runaway.

That night a gang of children break into a store and rob it. Tim tries to knock out a few kids but doesn’t blow his cover.

When they get back to the house Tim overhears Bane saying that the kids they left behind were weak. It’s survival of the fittest. Bane is building an army. He tries to talk to Danny (the oldest kid there), but Danny believes that Bane cares for them and that for the first time in their lives they have someone that cares about them.

That was a neat story, however it’s brevity kind of forced it to wrap up too quickly. I’d love to have seen this expanded over a few issues. It’s a neat ‘Artful Dodger’ kind of story that could’ve had some legs.
