This is the review of the whole series.
Ao Haru Ride is probably one of the best shoujo mangas I have ever read! The story is really good, with big twists and a solid love story. The characters are very realistic and the manga explains their personalities in depth. Plus, another positive is that it concluded all characters' stories and not just the main ones. In addition, unlike many manga which just end after the couple confesses, this one takes the reader a step further and gives us a few extra chapters where we can see the relationship blooming. The love triangle was definately a killer, with the two boys being equally adorable and perfect candidates. That said, the illustration was wonderful as well, and I especially appreciated the chapters when we had two povs at the same time, just like in movies. The only flaw I could find in it was that it got a little boring in the middle of the story, but it quickly recovered. So, 4 out of 5 stars.

I love this manga, but I'm starting to hate Touma, first Narumi, now Touma, I hated Narumi because she acted like a total bitch with Futaba and Kou, she knew that Kou was only pitying her, that Kou didn't like her, that Kou was using her just to keep mourning over his mom and she still took advantage of the situation to get him! I really hated her character! Touma is doing the same thing, took advantage of Futaba broken heart, he told her the things she wanted to hear the most, he didn't give her the chance to reject him, he's only thinking about himself, I really dislike him!
Finally Kou said everything, (it has been obvious since chapter 17 that he didn't like Narumi, or was dating her nor had feelings for her, he admitted that he was using her to make himself feel better), Kou is starting to be honest with his feelings and we have a Touma possessive and annoying as hell, I hope his arc will end soon, because Futaba ending up with Touma would suck big time, will ruin this beautiful manga

In middle school Futaba Yoshioka thought all boys were loud and obnoxious... except for Kou Tanaka. They agree to meet to go to a summer festival together but he never shows up. Fast forward to high school where she meets Tanaka again, but he's totally different and that even includes his name! Will they be able to rekindle what they had in the past?!

Toma goes for it! Kou could have taken action but dithers. Really I understand though. This is just high school. This is likely not forever and so do you really want to put yourself out there? I’m glad though that Toma DID go for it. It shows he’s a lot healthier for Futaba than Kou.

Narumi is such scum to me. Even if you get him for a little while and ruin his relationship you’ll still end up breaking up... because you weren’t the one he connected to. I wish girls understood they’re setting themselves up to waste a lot of time with someone who just isn’t into you. I liked how her machinations played out. And how Kou finally stepped up.

I like how real Futaba has been about how she feels about Toma. She can’t force anything but she sure can give it a go with the right attitude. Toma is a little naive about being with someone who doesn’t feel romantically inclined but she’s not going in deceiving him so that’s good.

I loved her friends in this volume... one moving onto a new romance and the other trying to do what’s best about her friend. While I’ve decided not to read Ao Haru Ride anymore I do find it a perfect series for high school girls. I was happy to see Futaba finally move on from an extremely unhealthy relationship and find this is the perfect volume for me to stop on.

This just gets even worse and worse, the communication is going downhill. We had such a big build up for Futaba and Kou, and since the series is going to end soon, I hope I get to see more happy moments. Even though it is a little frustrating, it is so much fun reading this series. There are so many struggles when it comes to relationships, but I hope these two can work everything out soon. Life has many obstacles and this manga shows that and I hope that these characters could get past it.

In middle school, Futaba was a girl who used to hate guys. She hated them because of the fact that they found her attractive and made it harder for her to make friends. The only guy she liked was a guy named Kou, who was less manly, shorter than the average guys at his school and had a gentle voice. Before her and Kou could hang out, he disappeared and moved away from his school. Later on, Futaba moves to high school and decides to change. She eats more and acts aggressive in front of guys so that she won't be as attractive as she used to be, helping her make friends, even if they weren't real. She never expects to run into her childhood crush, who has changed just as much as she has.

Futaba is a great character, and I understand why she chose to do the things she did. She wants to be happy and the only way she can, is to be with people who are positive. Kou is cool, but he doesn't let anyone into his life, he hides a lot. He is honest, but he doesn't say enough. And when he realizes this, it's kinda too late. Yuuri and Maruo are great characters who support Futaba.

I wish that the characters were a bit more open with each other. If Kou told Futaba everything from the beginning, none of these problems would have happened.

I am hoping for everything to get well by the end of this series. I am excited to read more and I'll be off!

Damn, I don't like what I'm seeing—Kou, you're so stupid, I hate you. But Narumi is the worst! And Toma's existence is pissing me off as well. I mean, he's sweet and all but I don't like him now because he's shooting cannons on my ship. I just want to cry, but there are still 4 volumes left and I know this anxiety will drag on a little while longer.

Ah, I loved this volume with my whole heart! <3

In a nutshell, Kikuchi musters up the courage to ask Futaba out...and she ACCEPTS!! And I am glad because Kou's constant dithering is really starting to piss me off. I really disliked him in volume 6 and think the way he treated Futaba was ridiculously shitty! He was also messing Narumi about too! Ugh.

However, in this volume he finally does tell Narumi that he can't hang around with her anymore and doesn't want her to get any ideas about there being a future between them (in a romantic sense) which is something Kou should have done right from the start!

Elsewhere Yuri and Uchimiya become a couple and when Yuri accepts she is so darn cute!!! Oh, my heart!

And then comes the biggie - Kikuchi and Futaba get together! I must admit whilst I am glad that they are an item I can understand some peoples' negativity towards Kikuchi's behaviour as he does appear a lot more aggressive and even forceful in this volume as opposed to earlier volumes. I think now he realises he has to seize the moment and in a way force Futaba to either accept him or walk away, although he doesn't give her much room to walk away. Whilst I am not condoning or supporting his behaviour in this volume, I am glad that he had the courage to tell Futaba how he feels rather than give her a tonne of mixed messages which just confuses and upsets Futaba (I'm looking at you, Kou) so there is that.

Anyway, this was a very enjoyable read and I'm thoroughly looking forward to the next instalment!

And now we head into the late-mid portion of our manga. Futaba's two friends are both pretty much situated, but our heroine is still in a state of flux.

I like Kikuchi a lot. He seems like a sweet kid, very much of the "forthright" type to Kou's "stoic." He starts off somewhat in doormat mode, saying he'll accept Futaba as she is (including lingering feelings for Kou), but like two episodes later asks her to date him and .

However, there are so many signals that he is just not The One, that all come from Futaba's point of view. She consistently has to be approached rather than meeting Kikuchi in the middle, she's still hung up on Kou despite her frequently mulling on a sort of "stages of grief" where she'll someday not constantly have him as a lingering presence in her mind, and so on. Most telling for me was a sequence of two panels where Futaba thinks and Kukuchi says out loud, Subtly done (these lines are separated by a page turn), but still striking if you notice it.

Despite knowing exactly where this is going, it's always nice to get into the flow of a shoujo manga and let its sometimes stormy and melodramatic currents carry me along.

Alright friends, this volume was frustrating. I wasn't frustrated with Kou thought. I was proud of Kou and the decisions that he made in this volume. He is finally progressing towards what he really wants.
I am frustrated at the other guy currently in the picture. He has pressured Futaba into going out with him, even though he knows she has feelings for Kou. He is taking advantage of the fact that she wants to seek independence, and is potentially looking at how much she cares for Kou. He's being forceful, and it honestly felt a little icky to me.
I am ready for Vol 10 to come along, and hopefully for some changes to happen in the next volume.

Okay, I’m of course still rooting for Futaba and Kou, buuut i can’t help but love Toma and Futaba at the moment, their just so cute and Kou kept dragging his feet around waiting for everything to work out itself that he lost his chance. I don’t want him to give up but i’m enjoying how cute everyone is at the moment. There’s only 4 volumes left… I hope they have time together as a couple before it ends though!!

Overall Manga Review:

Wonderful in some aspects but questionable in others, this was certainly an interesting manga.

One thing that was fantastically done in this manga series was the exploration and representation of grief and the long-lasting impact a parent’s death can have on a child.

The exploration of true friendships was also nicely done, especially with the protagonist letting go of her fake friends and making new friends with whom she went through hardships with but still came out well on the other side due to genuine communication and understanding between them all.

The romance was mostly cute and it certainly started off nicely but it got really murky and messy as it went on. The introduction of the second love interest threw a spanner in the works and to be honest, this was the one instance in which I rooted for the second love interest over the main love interest.

There were some problematic things in this manga that I really wish hadn’t been there.
1. The indecisiveness of the protagonist coupled with the irritatingly dumb decisions of the main love interest became a bit annoying, especially as the right-person, wrong-time scenarios kept cropping up so that the protagonist and main love interest went round in circles constantly.
2. The way the female rival love interest used her unfortunately sad situation to manipulate the main love interest into being with her even though she knew that he wanted to be with the protagonist was awful, exploitative and downright shady.
3. The protagonist made a good decision to move on from the main love interest when he chose to look after the rival love interest instead of being romantically with her. Yet those were all words and no action because the entire time she was with the second love interest she was pining for the main love interest. And it was made even more pitiful by the fact that she knew she didn’t love the second love interest but still insisted on being with him and hurt him by being overly enthusiastic in her actions but not really feeling anything towards him. She led him on and then dropped him like a stone the moment she could go running back to the main love interest after deluding herself that all the terrible decisions she had made and lies she’d told the second love interest were in his interest and only done with him in mind. In actuality, the protagonist acted in a way that was cruel and selfish.
4. The main love interest was sometimes mean too. He managed to make the protagonist cry on more than one occasion with his unnecessarily harsh words and worse, his borderline sexually abusive actions. The scene where he tried to scare her into protecting herself around guys by getting on top of her and pinning her to the ground was insane and the fact that all she did was cry was even more insane. She wasn’t mad at him at all afterwards even though he had severely abused his position as her friend. The lack of consequences for his actions just showed the kind of toxic love between the protagonist and the love interest that hurt themselves and everyone around them.

And so, despite how cute this manga appeared at times, it grew harder and harder to ignore all that was wrong with it and all the blatant issues cast long shadows over the strengths of this manga.

I honestly don't even know how to feel about this volume....

I wanted Kou to suffer for constantly giving mix signals for the past almost 9 volumes but I'm hating where this is going now 😭 like the second lead isn't giving me second lead syndrome (which don't happen 99.99 times like most of the time I simp over Second main lead character more than the MML but not this one) like yeah he's sweet but I'm just finding him so annoying right now (l'm lowkey annoyed by almost every character atp 😭).

This volume gives a lot of context to the overall story thanks really to Aya.

Basically he says "People make mistakes, that's how life is. But it's not to late to fix things, right?" and that's very true. I forget sometimes these characters are high school and they're gonna make a lot of dumb choices. Futaba had enough of Kou back and forth and decides to go on a date with Toma. Of course it's weird, and then they start dating? But still feels wrong. At same time Kou finally breaks off his friendship with Narumi and that...doesn't go well.

Overall a pretty solid chapter all around. Also Yuri gets a boyfriend and that part is megafreakingcute.
