General thoughts on Part 6

Let's start on two main things I have to say about Part 6: the art is absolutely gorgeous and I love every panel (except Heavy Weather, that was gross); Jolyne is an amazing jojo and she's my favorite. Her arc, her personality and character development, her design - everything is just so so good!!
I liked the beginning a lot but as the story progressed i got tired of constant battles. I'm not a big fan of shonen and as fights are essential to the genre, it's a miss for me. I wished less fights were about punching and more fights were solving puzzles and mind games.

Thoughts on the characters

Jolyne. She is a classic Jojo to the bone, it's in her blood and soul. She is spirited, she pursues justice even at risk of her own safety.
She has been wrongly accused and jailed for 15 years not because of who she is, but who her father is, but she managed to persevere and not only successfuly fight against circumstances, but save her father and get free. I love Jolyne. She's determined and she's often going to extremes to win. She's creative and smart, she can be silly and cute. She has different side to her personality and she get to see her grow during the events of Stone Ocean.

Hermes. I love her. She can be strong and vulnerable, her reason for getting into Green Dolphin Street prison shows clearly her personality, her determination and focus. I love her and Jolyne's relationship. They hit it off quickly and over the course of the story they grew close.

Foo Fighters. In this house we love one (1) sentient plankton aka independent stand. She was so much fun, she added lightness and humor to the story. She's loyal and passionate. I was the most affected by her death. Her fight for her memories as they are what makes her true self was intense and heart-breaking. I think F.F. is the my absolute fave of Part 6.

The best jojo trio is Jolyne-Hermes-F.F.!!! They are driven and focused. Their personalities compliment each other so well. They are a great team.

Weather Report & Annasui - eye candies? Weather Report did get an two chapter long backstory and his life affected Pucci and one might say it was a catalyst to what Pucci set his mind to do, but Weather still is one-dimensional. He and Jolyne could have had a good bromance but sadly there weren't that many scenes of them together. Annasui had like three character traits: murder, hot and in love with Jolyne. Basically, they were just eye candies. I liked them well enough, Annasui especially, he was endearingly annoying. A man of one goal and that goal is to marry a woman whom he has just met. I guess more annoying than endearing, both he and Weather are beautiful so no major complains here.

Jotaro was for like 2 volumes but he was alright. I wish the relationship between Jotaro and Jolyne was more explored? Why was he such an absent father? What happened? I wish we get to see any pre-part 6 time line scenes with between them.

Pucci and Dio. Ok, let's get it out of the way, Dio was so hot in part 6. We see him in Pucci's flashbacks and thank you Araki for the good meal. Pucci himself was an interesting and terrifying villain. However, his motives were rather all over the place. He wanted the power to "Go To Heaven" to reset the universe? Did Pucci want to recreate universe to save his sister and brother? To end suffering? I am lost.
Pucci and Dio's friendship was a surprising and interesting thing to follow.

Emporio. Great kid 10/10, so smart and good.

Fave stands & battles

Stone Free definitely! My favorite Jojo's stand, along with Giorno's. Jolyne has so many creative applications to her stand's power. It's a very versatile stand.

I loved volumes 1-2 they were so so good! I loved everything there.

Jolyne & Jotaro Vs White Snake was epic in volume 2 & 3.
There's Six of Them! and fight with F.F. was so much fun, so much tension and as a result F.F. joined the squad!
The fight with Mirashon was a good example of fun Jojo fights where a mundane game turned to To The Death level wildness.
Operation Savage Garden had one of the best visuals.
The fight against Sports Max was emotionally charged because he killed Hermes's sister and I was at the edge of my seat while reading it. Hermes uses her stand abilities so creatively and the fight was very entertaining to read.
Ultra Security Solitary and the Green Baby arc has The Best visuals, it was so unbelievably creative and imaginative!
Jail House Lock arc is one of my favorite (right after first White Snake fight), I love when enemy stands play mind games with our heroes; Miu Miu has such strong and seemingly unbeatable stand! Jolyne and Emporio have managed to kick her butt anyways and I was cheering for them so hard.
Underworld was also fun!
The New Moon's Gravity and the final battle has amazing visuals and wild powers, but I didn't have a strong emotional response to them, until the end.

Thoughts on the ending
First of all, I had to reread the last chapters because I couldn't comprehend what was happening while reading it at 2 a.m.
I don't get why Emporio was the only one who remembered the old "time line". Was it because he killed Pucci? Is the new universe - the universe Pucci wanted to create?
I liked that it is Emporio + Weather's Stand who defeated Pucci, it was a very satisfying conclusion.

Final thoughts
Do I love Part 6? - Y E S
Am I excited to continue on with the series? - Y E S
Do I have issues with Part 6? - Of course, nothing is perfect, I wish some things were different, but overall I had an excellent reading experience, the more I think about Stone Ocean the more I like it. Araki is so talented. I'm mind-blown by his art and storytelling.
Do I want to have Araki's art as prints all over my walls? - Y E S

I knew it was coming... I knew it was coming and it STILL hurt. It's a Hadestown scenario: to know how it ends and still tell (or in this case, read) the story and imagine that things could turn out differently... UGH. I'm pretty much catatonic right now. I desperately need some Dadtaro and Smolyne content to ease the pain. Catch me on Tumblr for hours.

The FUCK you just say?

Like father, like daughter Part 4.0 or 5.0 or who even knows at this point

Well, onto Part 7, and if what I hear about it is true, it's the kind of absolute clownery I need to recover from this. Goodbye, Queen Jolyne. :'(

this is all going to sound like nonsense but its 2:30 am and i dont have anyone to talk this at so goodreads here you go ok i love jolyne so much, wasnt expecting to have a female protag who actually feels like a real person in a shonen lol shes cocky and rude and so sweet and sensitive and wow theres some nuanced repression going on we love children of divorce we love lesbians shes just really cool and im finding it hard to articulate exactly why she hits SO different i just sneezed. i love how the scale of the story starts small but expands to a literal cosmic scale.
ok averaging this review with the one i wrote towards the beginning gives stone ocean a 4.5/5 from me which is like fair i would go the full 5 because i enjoyed it and thought it was really interesting and fun but the ending made me wanna cry really badly i had to go and make a tiktok to the juice world song to calm down like ok yung pope pucci is dio REALLY sexy enough to reset the universe for is he REALLY worth it couldnt you have just left well enough alone and like play out your power fantasies in prison like everybody else. you had to madoka everyone and make poor emporio the homura hes 11 hes an 11 year old baseball boy and youre leaving him in a world on his own with the burden of the entire past universe weighing on his mind bitch hes never even been to disney world! and he lives in gd FLORIDA!!!!! PLEASE jolyne couldve built a better relationship with jotaro and like gone on a date with hermes they all couldve raised emporio together and gotten to take him to do all the fun stuff he never got to growing up in prison but NO puccis raging dio boner ruined everything. this entire series is literally like dio has beef with a dude in the 1880s so hes like oh ok im going to torment his bloodline forever like omffffg dio youre ruining the reputation of vampires everywhere by being such an annoying b*tch i dont know why im writing this here anymore actually this is a discussion for twitter

i am in shock. in disbelief. that ending was..wow. part 6 is def the most creative part stand wise, but it’s also just really really sad?? like what??? are you telling me everyone just dies but they also live but they’re not the same???

towards the end you realise that everything that jolyne and the other main charas are doing are useless. futile. and they’re just helping the enemy. emporio slayed though he carried this whole arc on his 11 year old back. and pucci was SUCH a well written antagonist, he could easily beat kira. his and weather’s backstory caught me by surprise i genuinely could not believe my eyes. the whole development of his stand was insane. i knew it was over when the made in heaven arc began.

from an artist’s pov, THIS PART WAS ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS. EVEN THE ANIMATED ONE (sometimes.) the composition of some panels were just breathtaking, like the end of the first universe panel and when emporio was abt to beat up pucci- i may have been fighting for my life emotionally but dayum it was beautiful.

stone ocean had me in shambles but i still love it def in my top 3 favorite parts. JOJOS IS PEAK

I... loved this part so much, Jolyne is such a great Jojo protagonist. EVERY character in this was incredible.
I was not expecting that ending, it's such a bittersweet moment and that glimpse of Wes at the end was enough to get me emotional. I can't wait for the anime!

Made in Heaven. I knew what was coming and I still wasn't ready. Spoilers below.

I had much of this spoiled for me before I started reading Stone Ocean, so this result isn't as bleak as I had initially expected. I was under the impression the the entire timeline reset at the end of the story, with new versions of all of the characters showing up. By comparison, what happened isn't all that bad. Everyone but the main cast gets to go on living their regular life. The just get rewound back to November and can predict the future up until March. Much better than everybody in the world dying and starting over with a new world. It's still a very brave storytelling decision that would leave any future Joestars in an awkward position. But it was not as literally earth-shattering as I was led to believe. I'm still wrecked after how brutally Hermes and Jotaro were killed. Fuck me.

One thing I don't understand is why Emporio runs into Irene and she's totally different from the new Joylne we saw in the prison. Poor Emporio, though. He's a kid trapped in a world where the only adults who cared about him have been killed and replaced with body-doubles. He only ever did the right thing and this is his fate. It's tragic.

The climax of Stone Ocean had some great action. I loved how the crew forms this katamari of stand powers. Everybody had a role to play against an unstoppable foe. Never has a crew of Joebros felt so unified in the synergy of their powers. And that's entirely to the credit of Araki's creativity. It's not like these abilities were designed to fit together well, he just devised a situation where he could make that happen. If Vento Aureo fell apart at the end, Stone Ocean cranked things up to 11 for its final few volumes.

Much of this ending does improve my thoughts on Stone Ocean. Pucci might be the biggest example. Aside from wiping out Jotaro early on, he pretty consistently got his ass beat by the Stone Oceaneers. But slowly and steadily, he grew in power and became more and more threatening. Like a stereotypical shonen protagonist, we got to see him grow and escalate power levels whenever his back is against the wall. And he eventually grow into a fittingly terrifying enemy with the most fleshed out motivations of any Jojo villain. It totally makes sense that Pucci would want to create a world where everybody knows what will happen to them. Because his life was destroyed by a series of horrible coincidences he had no way of predicting. He is enduring beatdown after beatdown all for the sake of bracing the world for the sort of unforeseeable pain he had to go through. And it's based in the thoroughly optimistic perspective that humans are resilient beings who will be able to be happy in spite of the knowledge that suffering is around the corner. Made in Heaven is the perfect name for this stand, as the lyrics embody Pucci's thoughts. After listening to that song, I feel a lot better about how seemingly random the requirements for Pucci's plans are.

Made in heaven
I'm playing my role in history
Looking to find my goal
Taking in all this misery
But giving it all my soul
Made in heaven, made in heaven
It was all meant to be

And just like that, I love Pucci. Amazing.

This volume also did well to raise my opinion of Annasui. In the past, I was frustrated by how he sort of stole the spotlight from Jolyne and comedically lusted after her. But that was because he saw her as a chance at redemption- a chance to be with someone who can erase the darkness in his heart. And because of that, he is super motivated to keep her safe when they're together, explaining why he takes charge in the narrative when he's on-page. I get the sense that when Jolyne tell him to ask for marriage, it's because she knows he is going to sacrifice himself. She wanted him to at least feel accepted before he dies.

And damn, even Jotaro gets some development. We've known this guy for what, 50-60 volumes and 20 years-in universe. And not once has he lost his cool. Not once has his stone faced stoicism been cracked. Not when he thought his grandfather died. Not when he was being melted by that rat in Morioh. Not when Dio had him at death's door. Not even when he dies later in this volume. The one time Jotaro loses his cool is when he realizes that Jolyne is about to be stabbed. Araki had this one bullet in the chamber for 23 years and he pulled the trigger at the perfect time. Incredible. Masterpiece.

I had a lot of complaints going through Stone Ocean. I think many of them can be chalked up to shoddy localization and lacking the benefit of hindsight. It's easier to forgive any flaws I found when they can be placed within the context of an upward trajectory of quality. As it goes on, things just get better and better as the stakes steadily increase, we learn more about the characters, and we spend less time in that prison. And it's a story that I'll only enjoy more in the benefit of hindsight. I'll be able to put the characters and the action in a greater context instead of worrying about what Pucci's greater motivations are or why things are happening the way they are. There are so many little moments that I just adore. So many times where I felt compelled to learn about real world concepts because of something that popped up in the pages of Stone Ocean. So many gorgeously colored panels. Right now- in the face of this fantastic climax and with the perspective to view the entire trajectory of the part- I can say without reservation that I love Stone Ocean. It was all meant to be.

my heart is very broken 🤧.

I've been waiting for C-Moon part 7 (ch 741) for so long. They're all back together with Jolyne at the center as she should he.

C-Moon part 8 (ch 742): I'm so scared for everyone.

Made in Heaven part 1 (ch 743) reminds me of that Spy Kids movie wherein time was supposedly speeding up even though it was actually just clocks moving really fast, but for here time really is moving faster than human awareness and perception. I wonder if that enemy from the first part came back too.

You can tell Araki had fun with Made in Heaven part 2 (ch 744). I liked seeing Jotaro monologue and seemingly passing down the Joestar secret technique to Jolyne. Also wow, Anasui, the absolute madlad!

Made in Heaven part 3 (ch 745): Jotaro keeping Jolyne away from Anasui as he should !! This chapter is so intense, and there's just something about Jotaro being surrounded by kids once again. And wow just wow the last panel. My heart was beating so fast throughout this.

Made in Heaven part 4 (ch 746): I think I just might pass out. The action is incredible.

Made in Heaven part 5 (ch 747) is so intense I'm crying.

Made in Heaven part 6 (ch 748): man wtf. I feel so bad for Jotaro, surviving all that he did in Stardust Crusaders only to fail to go through it all again here in Stone Ocean. I feel so bad for Jolyne who never (??)realized Jotaro loved her. This is so sad. The visuals of their dead bodies floating in the water ohmygod. She died so young just like Jonathan.

Made in Heaven part 7 (ch 749): The panels are so pretty and this is so bleak. The butterflies, the skies, the end of the world !!

Made in Heaven part 8 (ch 750): I really enjoy how Araki portrays the speedrunning of life on Earth (and life on earth being unable to cope). I also thought this chapter was going to go full circle and that they might be trapped in a loop of sorts just like Diavolo.

Made in Heaven part 9 (ch 751): Emporio was so funny yet so valid, just freaking out as Pucci pursues him. Pucci meanwhile is such a sicko; I don't understand how that is happiness for him. In love with the panel of Emporio with the disc in his head, doing Weather Report's pose.

What a Wonderful World (ch 752): I love this ending actually. It's bittersweet. They all end up together somehow anyway. Emporio's not alone, but I bet he's still lonely. Pucci died violently. I am confused by his motivation, did he want to adhere to destiny or overcome it while everyone else was a slave to it ?? There's something sleeping slaves-esque about this: Bucciarati had a one-must-imagine-Sisyphus vibe to him that seems to be here as well. This arc dwelled so much on memories and relationships. I love how in a way, they kept them all to some extent.

The slump continues.

Stone Ocean does much better on the character front, which you know I think is the most important front: they have a fair bit more going on, both personality- and conflict-wise, than the folks of Vento Aureo. Jolyne isn't my favourite main character, but she still ranks pretty high, right after Joseph, and Josuke, and... maybe Jonathan and Johnny as well. Okay, so not that high. But still! I like her and want to see her succeed.

This is especially good because the rest of the story really does not help so much. The plot of ths one, involving a mad priest and a bunch of Dio's kids and also breaking out of jail, is by far the most dense and difficult to follow in all of JoJo, and that's saying something. All too often I lost track of what the hell was going on now, who was fighting whom and why, whose power did what... the Stand abilities don't help either, being some of the most powerful seen in the series and starting to mess up with the entire world for some reason. It all pretty quickly lost me: I had to read through the same parts two or three times before things started to make sense, and often it just was not worth it.

Also the art style continues to deteoriate, and this time the story doesn't even offer beautiful scenery to compensate: a bulk of the story takes place in a featureless prison block, and even the rest can't hold a candle to Italy.

I still like it better than Vento Aureo, purely because of the characters, but on the whole it's still not one of the best arcs.

I've heard a lot of people say that they weren't fans of Stone Ocean, and I don't really get that. it's true that it's not my favorite part, but I would rank it above parts one to three (not that they're bad, I just liked Stone Ocean better).
but with that out of the way, the last book in the series was great. I won't spoil the ending but it was definitely unexpected. the last chapter was amazing.
one thing that I loved about this entire part was how Jolyne matured mentally. while all of the other Joestars (and Kujos, Higashikatas, and Giovannas) before her became stronger mentally, I think that Jolyne matured the most.
another thing that was great about part six that I can say (without spoiling this volume) was the villains. while a mysterious main villain is always cool, I liked getting to know about Pucci's background and relationship with DIO.
the main cast was also amazing, and I really like watching them overcome all of their challenges.
i haven't gotten to watch the anime adaptation yet (i don't have Netflix) but I can't wait to!

Stone Ocean took me through such a rollercoaster of emotions I'm not even sure what to do with myself now that it's over. I'm super depressed about the ending though. Jolyne & Jotaro finally had some closure coming, dad came through for her!!! They had some serious bonding going on!!! and then... zap. ugh.

I ADORE the evolution of Jolyne though. She's such a basic thot, crying over her terrible boyfriend my life is so hard, and she turns into strong independent woman UGH THAT'S MY WIFE EVERYONE. She has so much character development, she's fleshed out, she... has an absurdly high pain tolerance. Her arm gets chopped off a few times and she just gives herself stitches and carries on???

Jotaro needs some fashion help for sure. I have no idea what he's thinking wearing that coat. and those pants. Maybe if he was present in his daughter's life she would have set his fashion sense straight.

I still can't quite process the ending... Let's just say I finally understand why people hate it so much. Honestly, I don't like it either... But that's not going to make me say that this is the "worst part" or whatever. I sure as hell wish the ending was different but everything else was just too good to make me hate the entire thing.
So... yeah. I'm not really happy about the ending but I'll live a happy life pretending chapter 158 of this volume never happened! Haha

This series left my in tears... what a heartbreaking story, I’d say it’s my second favourite part just because of the characters. There all different an their own way. Weather Report wound be my favourite character from the part and Donatello in second. The fandom has to hype up the sons of dio and not just giorno.
