SUMMARY REVIEW: "Licks" is an anthology of short f/f erotica. Writing quality ranges from above average to excellent with distinctive, pleasant "voice." Plot is quite limited and formulaic, boiling down to various scenarios where different f/f couples have sex, but there are some memorable characterizations and varied settings.
Unfortunately, about 80% through the read, I got sort of tired of it and had to force myself through the last two stories. There's only so many sex scenes one can read, no matter how evocative and well-written they happen to be, and there just wasn't enough "meat" to the stories to balance out the erotic content. These stories are meant for people who like reading detailed sex, and that's it.
However, "Licks" is marketed as erotica, not erotic romance or other genre fiction. The authors don't pretend it's anything else, and I feel like I got what I paid for in the reading experience. If you're shopping for short, sexy f/f reads, this anthology is worth your time.
MORE DETAIL:
Well. Hmmm. Well...my goodness.
Paisley Smith is one of my favorite autobuys. This writer can finger-paint romance with mud. Even if her stories don't always "reach" me, I'm awed at how Smith can fine-tune a little love story out of the most unlikely scenarios. These stories were so short, however, that it became tough to buy into the romance components and they felt almost thrown in as a PS trademark more than because they fit the stories.
Although I'm normally not crazy about Devlin's contributions to this collaboration duo's works, I think Devlin's stories in this anthology are actually more memorable due to D's more distinctive characterizations and their varied voices. Where Smith tended to rely on basic romantic fantasy characters (young women experimenting sexually with close friends, co-workers, etc.) Devlin played with older, more experienced characters, imperfect body types, bisexual characters seeking a girlfriend/playmate, and sexual situations presented as more recreational than romantic. I can't say I always liked these characters, but they were interesting and quirky. Their personalities helped break up the monotony and repetition of their stories.
There are eight short stories in the anthology and they are all somewhat repetitious in the following elements:
1) all stories are told in first person point of view 2) all stories are contemporary settings (the writers DO vary settings and locations, but there isn't sufficient world-building for this to add to the entertainment quality of the read.) 3) all stories focus on the couple's first sexual experience together. 4) the sex itself is fairly standard
I enjoyed the first four stories, especially "Bordello" with its exquisite atmosphere and imagery. "The Hired Hand" was also pretty good in its character evolution. I ended up plodding through the final three stories, though, mainly because I found them redundant.
I wish one or both of the authors had considered options to shake things up and vary the reading experience a bit more. Some third person viewpoint reads would've been good. Maybe a little genre diversity -- historical, dystopian, SF/F, paranormal, or even horror -- could have helped spiced things up.
Variety in the relationships and sexual scenarios would have definitely benefitted things. An established couple discovering an exciting new "kink" together, for instance. Celebrating a honeymoon or a wedding anniversary. Passionate reconciliation following a rough separation.
I could be grasping at straws here. It could be "Licks" just isn't my kind of read. I like story with my smut and "Licks" doesn't have that much. The characters and sexual description have all sort of run together in my head without a lasting impression. The stories themselves are well done and live up to their marketing. Readers seeking short, sexy f/f reads will find some here.
COVER ART (not rated): I found this cover low-key and a bit underwhelming. It doesn't seem to relate to any of the stories beyond the expression of f/f sensuality.
This did not deliver as i hoped it would. It just wasn't written to my taste. Sensuality was almost non existing, many times i find the stories kind of crass.
I wanted so much to really enjoy it. Bafter the first few stories they all muddled together. basically the same actions in different situations. It got dull.
