Faerie gangs are at war.The Seelie and Unseelie forces are tearing each other apart.
Humanity is caught in the crossfire.
I don't care which side wins. They're all assholes.
But if they want to wage a war, they'll have to contend with me.
And I'll be damned before I let either side get the upper hand.
Bloody Bastards is the fourth book in The Fury of a Vampire Witch. You've met Mercy before in The Legacy of a Vampire Witch and The Blood Witch Saga. She's fought against devils and demons, insidious witches, and old-world vampires. When she returns to Exeter, where she grew up as a girl, she'll find enemies even bigger and badder than anything she's ever faced before.
A great series for fans of the True Blood / Sookie Stackhouse novels or the Underworld franchise to sink their fangs into. The Fury of a Vampire Witch features a dark and twisty romance, action that could even get a vampire's heart pumping, and a snarky badass heroine.
Theophilus Monroe is a fantasy author with a knack for real-life characters whose supernatural experiences speak to the pangs of ordinary life. After earning his Ph.D. in Theology, he decided that academic treatises that no one will read (beyond other academics) was a dull way to spend his life. So, he began using his background in religious studies to create new worlds and forms of magic-informed by religious myths, ancient and modern-that would intrigue readers, inspire imaginations, and speak to real-world problems in fantastical ways.
I was privileged to receive this book as an ARC, and I was asked to leave my honest review, which I have done.
I haven't had the time, or luck, to have read any of this series, as yet but, much to my surprise, and pleasure, I immediately bonded with Mercy .
She reminded me strongly of Bethany Ann, Michael Anderle's main protagonist in the Kurtherian Universe - but only in the way that, despite obstructions, deceptions, and pure evil trying to get the better of her, she is both physically, and morally, strong enough to keep fighting for what she believes in - and she shares with Bethany that Badassness that's so compelling to read!
The story also reminded me, a little, of Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles - the very first Vampire novels I ever read, apart from the classic Bram Stoker's Dracula, of course!
But, with Mercy, it was obvious, from the first page, that her family was her strength.
This group of disparate people, were who she chose to be with, and fight for, and heaven - or hell - help the person who decides to interfere with that.
Of course, Oberon does exactly that, and so Mercy, her Druid Vampire friend, Muggs, along with Wee Willy Winky, Ramon, and a whole group of others, including young Adam, Clarissa's son, go off to fight the good fight against him.
There is so much happening within this book. All fascinating, absorbing and, fortunately for me, and anyone else who isn't familiar with Mercy's timeline, or story, the whole tale is riddled with plenty of detail, as the story unravels, which sets the scene for even newbies, like me to become familiar enough, that I'm aware of what's actually going on.
I realised, quickly, what the base plot involved, what's already been happening and, mostly, just how Mercy will react to certain things - and all of this, without once jarring me out of this fascinating story - A Masterpiece of storytelling!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and got so involved with it, that I hated to see it end - which makes me doubly glad that I already have the books that come before this, and have already preordered, and paid for, the books to come next, in this series.
I know one thing, though, and that's the fact that, the minute I finish the Oriceran series that I'm reading right now, I'm moving Theo's books right to the front of the queue, so they are next in line, on my TBR pile!
There's NO WAY that I'm going to let writing as good as this, wait any longer than I absolutely have to! That's the problem for such a voracious reader like me, in that I've gathered together such a plethora of amazing authors, that they all vie for my attention at once!
But, being a little OCD, I've found that I have to read one author at a time, or the stories get mixed up in my mind, and their writing is just too good, to waste it like that!
Now that I've, sadly, finished this book I'm off, straightway, to sort out the next Leira Chronicles book on my list, which is Book Four: 'Rule of Magic'.
So, I'll catch you on the flip side, to let you know what I think of it!
I couldn't wait for this book! I was so anxious to read what was next I was literally checking my inbox every day! The previous book had me tailspinning, like a dog chasing it's tail, from the drama! It was a lot more serious than the previous books, quite aptly so, what with an incubus attacking women, an ancient entity has resurfaced to turn people into Boabhan Sith, only women though, men don't survive AND Alice and Ladinas abducted... yeah, more serious. Talk about trying to find a needle in a haystack! The odds mount up around Mercy and her friends, and not in a pleasant way whatsoever! Discovering who she can ally with or can't proves even more difficult! Thankfully Mercy has Ramon, Muggs and a very confused Willie to help. Oh and Goliath too... what a good....ummm... doggie....
But geesh do things start getting more and more complicated for Mercy! Willie isn't himself, Oberon appears to be kidnapping both humans and vampires, motive unclear, Clarissa out of control, and Adam, well... he's just totally different to anything Mercy has encountered! The things he can do, the things he DOES are so outside the norm. I love Adam, I love that he's changed from being utterly scary into a sweet, albeit deadly teen if needs be. What Mercy assumed, what she thought, all came crashing down like an avalanche on top of her when the true perpetrator is revealed. And Oblivion! OMG I didn't see THAT coming!!! But herein lies the awesomeness of the author, the peeling away, the exposing of truths and untruths, the never knowing exactly which way the story will veer. Just when I think there's no way out, the author pulls a rabbit out the hat and sends me on another spiral! Like Nico reappearing...in a time and setting far from the expected...see? All magnificently hidden within the plot! Which flows from one event to the other at the most awesome pace. And the tension was cut by the humour reappearing towards the end of the book, got a giggle or two with Caladborg.
My goodness does the author know how to manipulate twists and turns! My goodness does the author pen a story that twists round itself! The action is intense, the manipulations immense and nepherious actions are hidden under layer upon layer of deception. The author's ginormous dexterity brings me into a world so vastly absorbing, with characters so magnificently flawed, so immersive and enthralling, I love each and every one! His storytelling knows no bounds, honest to goodness no bounds, letting me soar amongst this resplendent take, and like the masterteller he is, always gives me a riveting, gripping and irresistible read, one that's always unputdownable. That ending dropped a bombshell, and likewise my jaw!
We are into Book 4 now and the fast-paced, action-packed story line continues to race forward into more chaos. With humans getting caught in the middle of the fighting, Mercy will have her hands full to try to keep people safe. Cal Rhodes, the gangster who formerly served the Unseelie Queen, was the new leader of what used to be the Unseelie Court. He was currently possessed by an Unseelie faerie, an incubus named Gan Ceanach. And the only way to kill Gan was to isolate him from human woman and he would starve to death. Right now, Cal’s Unseelie gang and the RedCaps are attacking the Providence Place Mall when Mercy’s team arrives. Mel has hacked the mall’s security feeds and is providing feedback to help Mercy get where she is needed the most. The only way to stop the Unseelie goblins was to burn their hats which soaked up the blood that “fed” them; otherwise the cycle of death would continue with more human hosts. And Cal, who fed on souls and not blood, had no cap that Mercy could burn to kill him. (I’m glad Mercy is leading the defense. I would have to hide under a table and hope they didn’t see me!) Can Mercy handle all this chaos and put the human world back in order? The reader will see familiar faces but the enemy seems overwhelming and it’s never guaranteed that Mercy can stay on top of everything – except we know she will never give up and never leave her friends behind.
One last brilliant thing you will notice in this author’s books is the way he holds the reader’s complete attention in the storytelling. The way he pays attention to the smallest details paints a more vivid picture for the reader who is envisioning the scenes as they come alive. This is an invaluable skillset that focuses attention on what the reader needs to notice and helps the reader become more of an actual participant in the story. There is so much more going on, so make sure to grab a copy of this amazing book! And again, I’m glad we have Mercy to keep us safe!
Bloody Bastards is the fourth book in The Fury of a Vampire Witch series by Theophilus Monroe. First off, let me say that I have sorely loved reading each and every book in The Fury of a Vampire Witch. I can’t say which book is the best as each one gets better and better with each turn of the page.
The moment I picked up Bloody Bastards I was pulled deep into its world. The twists just kept tumbling out one after the other keeping me glued to my seat as I raced to the end wondering how they were all going to unravel.
Bloody Bastards kept me enthralled from beginning to end without a dull moment in between. I couldn’t turn those pages fast enough as I had to know what was waiting for Mercy, Alice, and everyone else on the other side. I was so wrapped up in the story when Alice was taken so much so that I do believe I gasped. I couldn’t believe it. Or more like I didn’t want to that is.
The race was on then as everyone raced around using their magic trying to find Alice. I was glued to the pages as they leaped from place to place and portal to portal looking for Alice. They were determined not to leave one stone unturned in their search.
Bloody Bastards is a great read as it has it all. I mean it has vampires, witches, succubus plus so many more paranormal creatures all living in the same world. Oh, and I don’t want to forget about mentioning the magic and the battles as they keep the suspense pouring out page after page.
If you like reading about vampires, witches, and magic too then let me suggest that you grab a copy of Bloody Bastards today!
This book has been, by far, my favourite of the series so far. I have loved every book more and more as the series has gone on, so I cannot wait for the next one as I have no idea how Theo will top this one, but I just know that he will!
Mercy is still trying to find a way to defeat Oberon, but he is a very deceitful fae, more wicked than I ever expected him to be, but this time he has an incredibly powerful ally at his side and one who is turning the tides against Mercy and her found family very quickly. Mercy has some very hard decisions to make in this one and ones which could have dire consequences if things don't go according to her plan. And things never go according to her plan right?!
With so many twists and turns, betrayals, time travelling and alliances made with the enemy, this book kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time. I was constantly grabbing a few minutes here and there in between doing other things to read more as I hated to put it down!
Mercy was fantastic in this one. As much as everything weighed down on her shoulders, as much as she wanted to give in at times, she was resilient, determined and kept fighting for what she believed in and for those she loved! And as much as she felt alone at times, she had a great group of people willing to stay with her and help out in the battles and the fight for the world.
I can't wait to read the next one now and I know it won't be too long to wait either!
I received an ARC copy of this book, but this review is my own, honest one!
This is another exciting rollercoaster ride in the tale of Mercy Brown. If you thought Mercy would get a break after the last book, guess again. She may have overcome the Unseelie queen, but nature abhors a vacuum, and without their Queen, the unseelie are left to find a new leader. No spoilers, but it probably won't surprise you who steps into the role. There is so much going on, and so many twists, I can't say much to avoid spoilers, but...Faerie gangs. The Seelie and Unseelie are now loose and wreaking havoc on the earth and humanity. Mercy rides to the rescue, but who are friends, allies, enemies? It's hard to tell, and when Mercy loses several of her found family to a pocket dimension dungeon, she will stop at nothing to find them and bring them home. There is more adventure and magic here, twists and turns. Old friends surface in unexpected places (hello, Nico), and new saviors arise (meet Adam), but in the end will a surprise betrayal send Mercy off the deep end? I loved this book (though I ache for Mercy), and I want the next one, like, yesterday.
The same narrator was used for this book as the precious ones, and she again did a great job capturing Mercy's attitude and snark, along with her dedication to 'leave no one behind'. She does a great job of giving everyone a distinct voice as well.
I received a free copy of this audiobook via StoryOrigin and am voluntarily leaving this honest review.
The title “Bloody Bastards” truly depicts the dire straits Mercy finds herself surrounded by and buried up to her neck in evil doers and backstabbing allies who are filled with nothing but treachery to bring forth her downfall. Her known enemies which include the Unseelie who are now under the control of Oberon as well and the “wolf in sheep clothing” Oblivion who had previously presented himself as an ally but who now turns out has his own agenda which will end in world domination. In the interim her staunch allies Ladinas and Alice have been kidnapped to a pocket dimension where over 200 hundred years have past and are now knocking boots while it’s been mere days since Mercy and Ladinas have raised their relationship to a higher level. The betrayal is both fresh and potent especially when she loses Adam after investing so much time and effort into training him when he loses control to his vampire side and get co-opt by Oberon. It came as no surprise in the end when she cut loose and decides to take a walk on the wild/ dark side. This is a great book filled with twist and turns that will keep you on the edge of your seat. I highly recommend it.
Our heroine doesn't care about the fae, just the innocent bystanders caught in the crossfire. So now both sides are going to have to deal with her.
This is book four of the series. It works rather well as a standalone with all the essential bits covered early on. You will be missing some of the backstory, but nothing essential to enjoying this book. That being said, after reading this one, you will want to go back for the earlier ones anyway.
This is an urban fantasy story with witches, vampires and more. The story is well written and easy to read, but at the same time it is also rather deep and complex. The setting is well developed with lots of details that provide new twists all the time. Similarly, the characters are well done with distinct personalities and often conflicting goals. All of it combines with a fast paced plot that is full of action, intrigue and mystery. Overall, this was a great story and I look forward to seeing what comes next.
Highly recommended.

Received as an ARC, I am leaving my honest review. I must say that this series keeps getting more gripping and addictive with each episode. You will be drawn into the story, which picks up from the last book. Finding a way to rescue friends that have been pulled into a pocket dimension has the team scrambling. Plans get more complicated as powers get misplaced and it is soon apparent that truths has been stretched. There is only one way to make things right, and when Oblivion finally comes out to say how, it seems impossible. Everything seems tipsy turvy until the Unseelie Queen and the Seelie King unite. But the steps and plans are not easy, nor straightforward. What happens will keep you glued to the pages with lots of surprises and laid out battles that may, or may not go as planned. Prepare for a harrowing adventure for the Underground team as they set their sights to saving friends and their world
Bloody Bastards: A Paranormal and Urban Fantasy is the fourth book in The Fury of a Vampire Witch. Mercy is at her utmost witchiness in this installment, bringing the fire, literally sometimes, throughout. There are quite a few surprises and twists. Paranormal action, romance, steamy romance, betrayals, suspense, and one heck of a cliffhanger ending make this a book you will want to read and then go right to the next one.
The characters keep you engaged, and with such a compelling storyline, the book is a page-turner. Book five has a lot of loose ends to tie up and the character's relationship issues to resolve. I can hardly wait for Bloody Brilliance, book five.
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I can't even explain how much I love this series! Mercy is probably my favorite vampire ever. And add in she is also a witch and you have Mercy...bada**! She's spunky, a great leader, and she is quick as a whip! Her and her team have fought many battles.
In this 4th novel in this series, The Fury of a Vampire Witch, this will be the worst battle yet. Once again, the Seelie and the Unseelie are at odds. If that's not bad enough, the Faerie gangs are also at war.
All of this spells disaster. This is especially true for the humans. Humanity is caught in all the crossfire. When Mercy returns to Exeter, her home, can she stop the madness and save humanity again?
I definitely recommend reading the series from the start! I can't wait for the next one!
Wow. I loved Bloody Bastards, and the entire Fury of a Vampire Witch series so far. Mercy is probably my favorite character of the author's entire storyverse, and I love how well this book (and the whole series) shows off her skills and personality. I couldn't put the book down. The story is gripping, with unexpected twists. This is one of the few books where I couldn't tell what was going to happen until the end. I highly recommend Bloody Bastards to readers who have enjoyed the series so far, and the Fury of a Vampire Witch series to anyone who enjoys paranormal action with a snarky female lead!.
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
My favorite vamp witch biotch, Mercy, is in all the action in this 4th book. One thing you need to know about Mercy is this, she will ALWAYS fight to protect her friends and she will ALWAYS fight beside her friends.
Stuck in middle of the battle between the Seelie and Unseelie Fea is none other than Wee Willie and company. Not to mention us mere mortals. Can Mercy save us humans? Or more importantly to her, her friends?
Adam is here in all his glory as well. Being his bada$$ery self as usual.
The drama commences, the steam ensues, and the laughter flows when it's appropriate. You're captivated from beginning to end.
Bloody Bastards: A Paranormal and Urban Fantasy (The Fury of a Vampire Witch Book 4) , my fifty-second read from author Theophilus Monroe. Theophilus Monroe has become one of my favorite authors in the last year. Another well written & enjoyable read, the fourth in his new Fury of a Vampire Witch series featuring Mercy Brown. I was given an Audible copy of this book & am voluntarily reviewing it. Kelley Hazen’s outstanding narration as always adds to the book’s enjoyment. I look forward to reading the next book in the series, Bloody Brilliance (The Fury of a Vampire Witch Book 5) when it comes next month. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).
Audiobook: This fourth book in "The Fury of a Vampire Witch" series was exhilarating. From the opening paragraphs until the end, the action was pretty much non-stop. Mercy has faced and overcome many opponents, but this time she met an adversary who was very powerful. Mercy has always been one of my favorite characters, but there were many changes that happened and some that were portended, and I wondered just how far Mercy would go before her journey was over. Kelley Hazen's narration was great, and her performance helped to bring the story to life. I was given a free copy of the audiobook, and I have voluntarily posted this review.
Mercy and the crew are fighting an uphill battle again. The odds are against but they get some help from an enemy and meet a blast from the past. When they feel they have the upper hand Mercy gets hit with another betrayal. Mercy shared a bit of herself and how alone she has felt. People in her life who were supposed to love her turned on her so I understand why she loses her shit. She may be badass but still is a person with insecurities who wants someone to want and love her. A pissed-off Mercy will not show any.
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This book is even more of an uphill battle than the first three. For each success there are several failures, and for each life saved there is heart-rending loss.
And then... the heart wants what the heart wants. Do you know that saying that if you're lucky in love you have bad luck with money? For Mercy, the bad luck is in love...
The ending of the book is such a twist of fate that I don't know how the world will save itself from this. I can't wait for the sequel!.
I received a free copy of this book from BookSprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
The city is being decimated by Redcaps and with Malvessa evicted back to the faerie realm, the Unseelie Court has been seized by a possessed Cal Rhodes. Mercy and her Underground army are in a running battle to protect the humans and other paranormals. She sure could use some help but Oblivion refuses to come to her aid unless she negotiates a peace accord between the Seelie and Unseelie. Probably not going to happen any time soon!
The action is non-stop! Battles, betrayals, time jumping – WOW! I received a free copy but my review is honest and voluntary.
Theophilus Monroe is a master in turning and twisting a story, I love how he never stops to surprise me. When you think you know which way the plot is going, you are probably wrong. Mercy is my favorite character out of his universe so far, she is witty and merciless and totally badass. If you like books where you don't know how it will end because let's be real, most books follow a pattern and you rarely get surprised. Not Monroe, he is a master at this. I highly recommend his books.
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Vampire Queen Mercy Brown has rarely been the epitome of her first name, denizens of the night aren't known for their kind and gentle ways. When friends of hers are kidnapped, she doesn't hesitate to try and rescue them, even if it means she dies trying. After all, she died before, it won't be the first time. A war between the faeries, a betrayal by someone trusted, and a threat to the entire dimension are just part and parcel of Mercy's existence. New life is breathed into old legends and someone has to make everyone else behave - that's Mercy's job.
Mercy cannot catch a break! We jump right in on another issue with battling the Unseelie only to discover they are following a leader and it isn’t who we think it is. On top of that, Roman’s littlest son Adam is partially grown and wielding power like crazy. Things keep unraveling only for Mercy and her crew to keep gluing them together. Truth bombs galore and my heart broke for her when she finds her love and missing friends and family. To see her act out is so expected from the constant strain she endured, when I read into the sample of the next book. Afterall everyone has a breaking point.
This book was epic! The plot twists were everything! You think you know where this story is going then it does a complete 180 and it leaves you gasping at what just happened and it was perfection! Mercy is a complete badarse! I love her series so much I love her wittiness and she’s not about to just let her friends get kidnapped without a fight and die trying. There’s a lot going on including truths are coming to the forefront and it nearly broke my heart seeing all this go on. I can’t wait for the next book!
Theophilus Monroe does it again with another fantastic installment in the Mercy Brown/The Fury of a Vampire Witch series. Mercy is older, wiser, and a bit more agitated, as things get serious in The Vampire Underground. I love the way Monroe threads so many various supernatural and paranormal entities into Mercy's stories. His work is a real lesson in religion, paganism, mythology, fantasy, and adventure.
This story was a riot and so full of everything it was crazy. War is here, everyone is fighting, and things are just not right. Trouble, intrigue, action, danger, surprises and so much more kept me glued to the end. Will Mercy and her crew be able to wage war and help keep the humans safe was part of the fun. And can Mercy stay out of trouble.. ok as much as she can was the question as I was reading this one. Loved it.
I could not put this book down!! This series better and better with each book! Theo Monroe is a masterful writer and sucks you in to each and every book written. This book has non-stop action and so many twists and turns your head will be spinning! What's going to happen next...I so can't wait for the next book!
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Mercy and the Underground are trying to find a way to bring Ladinas and Alice back from where Morgana placed them while fighting Oberon, who now has control of both the Seelie and Unseelie Courts. Adam learns about his magic from Malvessa. This story has plenty of action with some romance, ending with a humdinger of a cliffhanger. Very highly recommended.
I received a copy of this book from the author and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Wow! Another incredible book in this series. I have loved this series from the start but this book takes it up another notch, and then another! I couldn't get enough of Mercy and the gang. The author keeps you guessing and guessing and just when you think you have it figured out, you're wrong! At least I was. This was a great and easy read. I can't wait for more.....and then some more! Great book. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the narrator and found it very enjoyable. Mercy needs to figure out how to rescue her friends from a Fae prison. But can she ask a child of her former lover to help. He may be the only chance they have. Interesting characters and suspenseful, fast moving plot will keep you listen until the end. This is a very enjoyable series that just keeps getting better.
Bloody Bastards (The Fury of a Vampire Witch, Book 4) was a great read by Theophilus Monroe. Mercy has fought against devils, demons, insidious witches, and old-world Vampires. But when she returns to Exeter, she finds enemies bigger than shes ever faces before. The Faerie gangs are at war, with the Seelie and Unseelie forces tearing each other apart. Humanity ends up caught in the crossfire. I enjoyed reading this book and cant wait to read more by the author.
