Each girl at the Tsubakigaoka Girls' Dorm is paired with a roommate. Tsumugi with Beniko, and Ai with Fuuko. Yet the girls each have their own crushes on each other, and it's making it impossible for them to stay "just friends." The Last Uniform is a slice of life yuri manga series about girls and their crushes on other girls.
The Last Uniform v. 1 has a feeling of nostalgia to it, not unlike Azumanga Daioh (not to mention being broken up into very short chapters that give a similar flow to the 4-panel comic style of Azumanga Daioh). Relationships are key, and while this series teeters towards the ideas of same-sex crushes, there is still that similar theme of the power of friendship. However, while Azumanga Daioh is purely comedic, The Last Uniform might be considered purely sweet. There is light humor, but it isn't overpowering, and mostly there's an overwhelming gentleness to it.
It's certainly not for all tastes, but it's a nice piece of slice-of-life girls' love.
I thought this book was pretty good. I had been waiting to read it for a while, and while the store never had it, I found out a friend of mine did. She let me borrow it, and it was a very good book. For some reason, I just like Yuri books.
I also noticed that a lot of the characters have short hair.
A wholesome set of short stories about high school girls, some of whom have crushes on other girls in their dorm. There isn't much plot driving this volume: it's just a series of vignettes that follow six girls through the school year.
