Everyone will hear you scream!

In deep space spins a world infected by the universe’s greatest killers. Most people — sane people — would construct a barrier thicker than the hulls of 10 Nostromos and leave it to rot. But where most people see a death trap, Weyland-Yutani sees the biggest payout in the history of civilization. And if it costs a few human lives to secure? Well, those come cheap here!

Another fairly enjoyable Alien story that’s a direct continuation of the last one, so I don’t know why they restarted the book numbering (I kid! We all know it’s because number ones sell! Ka-ching!)

Decent artwork with some slightly confusing visual storytelling in places; there were times I felt like I was watching a Michael Bay movie - all flash at the expense of clarity.

EN Maybe my rating is a bit biased because I'm such a fan of this franchise, but the truth is I'm having an absolute blast reading these.

The comics do a great job of expanding the Alien universe and are genuinely entertaining from start to finish.

Weyland-Yutani is still obsessively trying to capture a Xenomorph specimen. This time, we follow the sole survivor from the events of the first volume, who infiltrates the Weyland-Yutani ranks and returns to the moon she once escaped.

The volume opens with a prequel chapter that finally reveals how the aliens ended up on that moon—something left unexplained in the first volume—and sheds light on the origins of the new breed of Xenomorphs.

--

Tribal conflict between Xenomorphs? Sure, why not...I guess they're not all that different from us in the end. :/

Decent art and twisty-turny Alien storytelling but not too much to set pulses racing.

Hardly better than the first volume. While the plot holds up a little better, the storytelling is sometimes barely coherent, which makes the whole thing painful to read.

Alien: Descendant is the second volume in this run, the fifth of the Marvel Alien volumes, and is the weakest so far.

V1: Thaw wasn’t great, and this return to the icy moon full of ‘thawed’ xenomorphs continues the plunge. W-Y send another mission to the moon to retrieve specimens, and like usual in this franchise, don’t inform any crew of what’s in store for them, treat crew as disposable bait, and no-one is who they seem.

The little girl who survived ’Thaw’ has grown up and joined the W-Y crew, but she has her own agenda. The Yutani family member directing the mission is a cliché, sneering, trust-fund brat, also with secrets. The mysterious white xenomorph of ‘Thaw’ has all mystery immediately removed through a backstory interjection.

I love the Alien franchise. There are elements to like even in this volume, such as the drop ship design, the use of the original Alien atmospheric suit, Alice the combat synthetic, and adding indigenous life to LV-695. But - there are more contrived poor choices made by characters here then even happened in Alien: Covenant, the art in the white xenomorph’s origin flashback is horrendous, the characters have no depth, the writing is a derivative jigsaw of existing plot elements from the franchise, and the white xenomorph design is a step backwards. I hope we leave this story arc buried beneath the ice.

This one's beginning to tread into the area of the sequels...and by that, I mean weaker stories, a focus on new, different xenomorphs (when there's a perfectly cool one to be explored right...there...in front of you...) and characters and events that are both incomprehensible at times, and improbable at others.

Not very good.

The conclusion of the main story arc is just decent, but I really enjoyed the Annual issue included in this volume. Two competing hybrid species of Xenomorphs clash for dominance in a situation that should theoretically happen pretty frequently in the background, but hasn't had much spotlight in the franchise. It's not exactly a Swiss watch of a tale, and there are a couple of plot holes that would have been more satisfying to see filled to make this issue tie in better with the rest of the series, but it's a breath of fresh air in a series that is otherwise mainly playing the hits.

This was a mess. I was lost half the time and worried it was just me, but after reading other reviews I realized I wasn't alone. I liked Vol 1 much better as at least it had a linear story, whereas this just jumped around and left me confused half the time. I feel like there could have been a good story here, but it just went off the rails early.

The first three volumes of Marvel’s modern foray in to the Alien universe were unexpectedly solid. The art and stories were decent if not a bit safe. Declan Shalvey’s first alien collection was a little lacklustre and unfortunately the second volume is no better. The wordless annual is fine but would’ve been better with slightly more consistent art but how it tied in to the main story was welcomed. However, the overall story continued in the main 4 issues is generic and the art is far too ‘cartoony’ for this world.

3.5 Stars.
I think as long as these Alien titles keep coming out, I'll keep reading them. They are always entertaining.
This one actually partially continues the story of previous Volume. What is the best here is white xenomorphs against the more traditional black ones. Both deadly, both awesome.
If you love the movies, try out the comic.

This second run of Marvel Alien books by Declan Shalvey wasn’t quite as strong as the first run by Phillip Kennedy Johnson, but it’s still fun. The art is solid, and I like the new alien designs.

„Alien, Vol. 2: Descendant” to kontynuacja wcześniejszej opowieści „Alien: Thaw”, osadzonej w mrocznym uniwersum Obcego. Fabuła rozwija wydarzenia sprzed dziesięciu lat, kiedy to korporacja Weyland-Yutani wysyła nową misję na lodowy księżyc LV-695 w celu odzyskania wraku statku Boreas.

Fabuła „Descendant” to klasyczny przykład opowieści o ludzkiej pysze, gdzie chciwość i ignorowanie zagrożeń prowadzą do katastrofy.

Alien, Vol. 2: Descendant (2024)
Writer – Declan Shalvey
Artist – Andrea Broccardo, Declan Shalvey
Series – Alien Annual (2023) 1, ALIEN (2023B) #1-5
Genre – Sci-Fi, Horror, Thriller, Drama

Synopsis: Weyland Yutani sends an extraction team to recover the ship they had lost in 2195, The Boreas

Descendant unlike the previous books is a direct sequel to ‘Thaw’ and takes place 13 years later. Zasha returns to lead the Yutani ships to help in locating and extracting the ship, but this time she knows of the dangerous that lurk beneath the frozen exterior of the moon.
The book also includes ‘Alien Annual (2023)’ which brings the readers to date with the ongoing war between the two alien species seen in Thaw.
Descendant is an extremely enjoyable read and this is mainly due to the base story set in Thaw and continuing the story arc. A more mature Zasha is relatable and the other characters that come up is a good addition to the tale. The Aliens are more or less a ticking time bomb and are dealt with reasonably well, to allow the story to not get diluted amongst the blood fest.
A parallel tale that takes place are the flashback sequences of an alien discovery in 2168, which seems to be unconnected at first, but like everything else is wrapped up in a bow by the end.
The ending is strong and leaves an emotional punch.
The artwork is much more improved and solid even though it’s the same style.
Overall, Descendant is so far the best from the Marvel series and a reason could be that it is essentially a 10-part series (with Volume 1. Thaw).

RJG Rating – 4.25/5
Goodreads – 3.25/5

This story mainly takes place after the events Alien: Thaw. It starts off a bit confusing and muddled, as it shows how the xenomorphs first showed up on the desolate moon in Thaw. It's confusing because there's zero dialog as it show xenomorphs apparently causing a ship to crash on the moon where they encounter an indigenous species of giant crab-ish creatures that seem to be able to take on the xenomorphs, though eventually some of them get impregnated and birth an alien/other alien crossbreed. Cut to current day of the story several years after Thaw, and good ol' Weyland-Yutani has sent another expedition to retrieve the ship that sunk into the waters all those years back. A mysterious woman named Cole (who looks pretty familiar) is leading the retrieval attempt and is quite aware of and prepared to shoot any aliens encountered. Then the story bafflingly jumps back several decades where a mining operation, heavily personneled by synths, uncovers a xenomorph egg which soon produces an alien. Eventually all the stories align. Unfortunately, the overall story just isn't as sharp as the previous Alien graphic novels, and there's way too many muddled "action" panels that aren't always easy to make out exactly what's going on. Decent but unremarkable story.

Book 2, set ten years after the events of 'Thaw'.
Jun Yutani launches a mission to LV-695 to salvage the Weyand-Yutani vessel Boreas from beneath the planet's icy crust. However, the mission awakens two different strains of xenomorph, one bred from humans and one bred from the planet's own vicious and deadly native creatures. As the salvage crew fight to survive, one of their number, 'Cole', has a mission of her own.

In all honesty, I haven't read 'Thaw' but this book gives you enough background information to fill in the gaps where necessary.
So what we get then is a fairly standard story of human hubris in the face of the overwhelming threat posed by the Aliens. Nothing new there. However, the fact that the two different strains of xenomorph do not get along was a nice touch that reveals something we've not really seen in the Aliens before.

I did also like the revelations about the backstory of the android Dayton, which once again proves that the synthetics in this franchise are every bit as complex as the human characters (incidentally, RIP Bishop, we love you).

I liked the first half of this, but given that the mid point felt about a quarter of the way into the narrative and the remaining half barreled through a two act structure in only two issues, it’s no wonder this story feels underdeveloped. There’s so many moving pieces here — the crew of the Descendant, whose fate (at least of the handful of survivors) is left entirely unclear at the end (unless they went down with the Borea and I missed that detail?). The ending also felt unearned and the double twist about Jun Yutani feels equally underbaked. I’ve always found it so bizarre when Marvel and Fox introduce a really neat new xenomorph type and then take it out by the end. That wasn’t the case here — the tease of a new Queen who never shows up was really lame, but also the “cold weather” xenos were just…really visually only different than their traditional cousins who they were fighting with because…reasons, I guess? I know it’s been established that their hives do that, but to have it to uncommented on here just seemed odd. Ultimately, flashbacks and jumps forward and 2-3 different narrative threads are just way too much for only four issues of story.

This was a really good conclusion to Alien Volume 1: Thaw.

The story takes place years after the events of Volume 1, and involves characters from before, so it's not a brand new story. If you're looking for continuity, you'll get that here.

If you don't want any spoilers, don't read on.

I like Annual (2023) that's included at the beginning of this volume. There is no dialogue in the annual but the story is amazing, even though I don't completely understand what's going on.

As for the rest of the story, I like the characters, action, and artwork. Some parts are a little implausible, such as when an older android model manages to defeat two newer android models.

Other than that, I really like this. I like the new alien species that are introduced, even though they aren't explained.

The only thing I don't like is Alien comics keep introducing new aliens and never expanding on them, and they keep writing one or two volumes set in their own little universe. I would prefer to have some stories that last a little longer, even though I understand with the nature of xenomorphs, they rush the plot forward very fast because xenomorph gestation time is fast.

Alien by Shalvey & Broccardo Vol. 2 - Descendant (TPB) (2024), calificación 3/5 estrellas.

Alien Annual # 1 (2023), Alien (2024) #1-4.

“Thaw” the first volume in Declan Shalvey’s Alien comic series wasn’t great but it was enjoyable, even if it was derivative and offered nothing new.

Decedant, on the other hand, just makes things confusing, convoluted, and actually rather boring. As a direct follow up to its predecessor, this one is a bummer.

The cartoony art is still decent, but that’s about it as this one returns us back to the same setting as “Thaw”, only now it’s 20 years in the future during a salvage operation but literally nothing has changed on the planet. Oh there’s white xenomorphs taking on the black ones but they’re unexplained. And speaking of things being left without reason, there’s very little explanation as to why some characters are still around after 20+ years or where they were during the intervening ones.

There’s no reason why much of anything happens and most of the stuff is generic as hell.

Another story set in the 'Alien' timeline
and...

NOTHING changes! People are still greedy AF and sneaky (not just the corporate bastards)
-------
A scientist family is isolated on a frozen planet, researching the ice packs and life. Guess what? They find something and bring it back to the lab.

Weyland-Yutani catches wind of it and comes to retrieve the research.
*cue up the Aliens music*

Wonder what happens when you find yourselves on top of an Alien infestation. Oh, wait. We already know because we've had several movies show/tell us. That doesn't even count the thousands of comic books they've done over the years.

This is very much a book of diminishing returns. The first volume didn't really feel like it needed a follow-up, and the story provided here didn't change my mind. While it wraps up storylines left open, none of them really felt like they were necessary, and they weren't satisfying conclusions. And the whole Alien/alien symbiote (introduced in a wordless and barely coherent first issue) fighting the other aliens just never looked or acted distinctive enough to be engaging. I wouldn't call it a complete waste of time, but it's not something I'd recommend going out of your way to read either, especially if the first volume didn't blow you away.

Satisfying follow up to Thaw, even if at times there is unfulfilled promise in the more gimmicky aspects of the story. The core themes and plot elements however are executed well, returning to themes explored in the first volume and providing a reverse ending that feels right, even if it is not the ending many will want. Shalvey's run on Alien has been defined by the risks taken in the story telling, bringing a freshness back to the franchise that has not been present for some time.

I liked Volume 1 more than 2. The Annual issue in this trade is really bad and didn’t add much to the story, so I took it out of the equation when factoring the overall score. Read as individual comics through Marvel Unlimited, ratings below:
Annual= .5 stars
#1= 3.5 stars
#2= 3 stars
#3= 3 stars
#4= 2.5 stars
Overall ranking of 3 stars

A direct sequel to the first volume. The story is fairly incoherent, especially an almost wordless issue devoted to two groups of aliens fighting over a frozen planet. Then in the story proper, there are all sorts of weird time jumps that really add very little other than confusion to an already overcomplicated story. And the art is quite variable. For the diehard Alien fan only.
