The music industry held nothing but sparkling promise when I was sixteen. But now I’m twenty-one and know better. In its darkest corners hides an evil I couldn’t imagine.
When my pain becomes too much, I take control the only way I know how—a handful of pills.
That plan backfires, and now my reputation is in tatters. My band quit, and my label is forcing me to make up the shows I missed—with interest.
Now, the only band willing to work with me includes my ex-best friend, who's hell-bent on making my life miserable. He twists the lyrics that leave my lips until they burn.
Then there’s his three bandmates. They somehow see my inner turmoil when nobody else does, and are determined to ease it in their own unique ways.
The pills didn't end me, but I think this industry might. Can I take control of my life, or will everything finally consume me?
Leah Steele grew up with sunshine and beaches, but now lives in the Midwest. She’s an awkward introvert who’s better left alone until she’s had her morning cup of coffee. If you can’t find her behind her laptop or a kindle, there’s a good chance she’s on a hiking trail taking scenic photos, or traveling around America.
Lyrics We Burn-the first book in the Survival Records Book 1 was a gripping and emotional book.
The story followed Raina, who, at the age of sixteen, had high hopes for a promising future in music. However, as she reached the age of twenty-one, the industry's hidden evils took a toll on her mental health.
Raina’s had pain and struggle, which she coped with by resorting to pills. Then Raina’s ex best friend came into the story, adding an intriguing dynamic, he added misery and conflict to her life, what’s worse is he and his friends were her new bandmates.
Her ex-best friend's bandmates provided a glimmer of hope amidst the darkness. These men , each with their own unique ways of understanding and providing peace, offered the support and understanding that Riana needed.
The story was engaging, capturing the emotional turmoil of Raina. Leah wrote about Raina’s struggles and inner turmoil so well. Making me sympathise deeply for her.
Such a compelling read, I recommend for everyone who likes dark romance, rock star romances, who-chose… Take heed of the trigger warnings please
I don't read contemporary books very often, but when I do, they're often rockstar romance based ones, so when I saw the amount of good reviews I thought I'd give this a try. While it is sort of a rockstar romance, the music is very much not the focus, and Raina is a pop star, so I wouldn't really class it as rockstar romance, more just contemporary who's main character happens to be a popstar.
What this book does well it does very well, and that's the way it deals with Raina's mental health. It was written in a very compelling and non-gratuitous manner, which isn't easy. I desperately wanted to give her a hug throughout the whole book. The guys are mostly well developed, although this is always a weakness in RH that there's not real time to do it on the level of m/f books.
It also portrays the dark side of the music industry in an effective, I'm not somewhat exaggerated way, but then again, what do I know! I feel like there are things Raina could have done to help herself, but she was so believable broken that I understood why she didn't.
My main issue is Tristan, and that's because I get the feeling the writer is going to make him redeemable and in my eyes he isn't. He's treated her too terribly and is a general asshole. But I can tell with that ending that's what is going to happen. I have no tolerance for bully romance as a genre, and he is vile to her. As far as I'm concerned he should be castrated. But I guess we'll have to see what happens.
All in all, if you like angsty, contemporary books with damaged main characters, that is oddly compelling, give this a try!
Lyrics That Burn, is a very deep book that takes you down a path of the dark twisted reality of the behind-the-scenes, of being in the music business, especially as a woman.
The author made you completely fall in love, with the female lead, even when more and more secrets were discovered, you just fell in love and understood her struggles and could see that she felt like she only had one way out.
Her ex-best friend, is done for though, after that ending, and I’m not going to spoil it, but I feel karma in the air, and gosh, the other men made me swoon, there are such huge differences in dynamics that hard to explain them, but somehow they all fit perfectly.
This book was amazing and I could not put it down. The way Leah writes about Raina’s story is so heartbreaking but touching, it made it so hard but so easy to read. Rainas pain is so raw but her guys are so good at making her feel safety, peace, and little spots of joy. I felt so many emotions reading each chapter and can’t wait for the next book.
The story starts with Raina a seemingly drug addicted pop princess diva. Reading through we begin to see the pain and abuse that she has been suffering at the hands of her music label. After a failed attempt to end that suffering she is forced to choose a new band except that band hold her very angry ex best friend, Tristan, who’s sole intention is to destroy her life. The only light in this is his band mates; Nash the flirty charming bass player, Blake who gives her peace and lets her be vulnerable, and Keaton the strong silent drummer the knows how to use his sticks 😉.
Will these Tristan and the music label be successful in ruining Raina or with the help of her guys, will she be able to find peace and freedom. This book does end on a cliffhanger and definitely check the trigger warnings as there is a good amount of delicate topics.
This read will take you down an emotional and intense ride, it had me hooked from the first paragraph and I couldn't stop reading till I was done. This is my first read from this author and now I'm looking at her backlist of books. The writing style and characters are so good i just want more. This read follows Raina, the pop star diva, through her struggles. Needing a new band suddenly she is faced with her past that wants to kick her when she's down but some also want to lift her up and make her their own. What an amazing read i can not wait for the next book!
First off, I loved it! I’m not even sure where to start...
My emotions were all over the place while reading this. I could not stop turning the pages. Even after walking over 10miles in one day at Disney World, I had to come back to the hotel to finish this book to read the conclusion.
Raina/Lexi is SOOO much more than she is treated. She hit it big at an early age, but it definitely came with too many strings attached. Her own family likes to put her out to benefit themselves and being young and naïve, she signed a multi-year contract that holds her to all of the craziness she endured.
Being young and easily influenced with not a solid back up; it’s clear Raina has been abused in more ways than one. Now, as she’s trying to grow a stronger back bone and warn others of her mistakes, it only seems to do more harm than good.
When Tristan (a ghost from her past) shows up with Nash, Keaton, Blake as her new band, she doesn’t initially know what to do. Everything she wants to do is against contract. But now, after 3 months of living together, things are changing. With the exception of Tristan, can these guys be her missing pieces to a happier life? Can she feel worthy ever again?
It’s very clear something between her and Tristan got mixed up all of those years ago. Will we find out if either of them are lying? Will we ever get to the bottom of the truth? And goodness, can Raina ever escape this nightmare she’s been living and still come out on top?
I absolutely loved this story. The ending though. It shattered me. In both good and bad ways. I cannot wait for book two and am dying to know how this story will go! Mr. Lexington is someone you NEVER expected and I am so ready for his demise!
The guys, Keaton, Nash and Blake are all super dreamy rockstar guys that you can’t help but swoon over. I hope they all put Tristan in his place!!!
*Overall 5/5 *Heat? 4/5 *Med Burn *Multiple first person POV *Ends on cliffhanger
The pain this book created in my heart was like getting staked.
The agony of the characters and the need to see them heal was paramount. I downloaded this KU as I wasn't sure I would like it as although I don't mind dark elements to books, I am not a fan of bully from the love interests and from at least one there was definitely a lot of that.
Crossed wires and hurt feelings mean a lot of angst.
But I am on the edge of my seat for the next book in the series ready for to see the fmc get all the love and care she needs and deserves.
I have also bought the book now as well, it deserved to be appreciated more than once!
This book tore at my heart. Not a light read and check the triggers.
Raina is the fall from grace pop star who is trying to make it again. This time with a new band - one that has a person from her past with an axe to grind. Let’s just say his intentions are not good. But Nash, Keaton, and Blake are a lot more welcoming and help women things get dark.
Raina’s story parallel real life a pop princess a little too close in some areas. The stuff she’s dealt with and the betrayal and lies will make you want to punch someone. Or worse. The cliffhanger and revelations had me seeing red.
* I received this book as an ARC for an honest review.
This book had me tearing up and full of anxiety and I loved it. What the older band and owner of the record label are doing is beyond disgusting and I hope they get their due. But I have to say I'm not mad about how Tristan's eyes were finally opened. Hope he learns to grovel.
Leah is really pulling out your heart and stomping all over it with this one!
As the first in this new series from her, you get some really dark insight into the turmoil the FMC has had thrust upon her; the person that should be her saviour, her best friend, is lresented as the worst kind of person in this instalment - Tristan is selfish, self, absorbed and as a result self-serving.
Dragging his friends/bandmates along to try and make Raina's life even more miserable, but he can't stop them from seeing the pain in her and wanting to see her shine.
There are some new trigger warnings in this one that are new from Leahs usual, so make sure you have read the list and are happy with them before embarking.
This does end on a cliffy (to be expected when it's a series), buf if cliffys aren't for you then download/buy and pop onto your TBR list until you can binge them all!
What a truly incredible start to what I know is going to be a fantastic series. Check the trigger warnings first though as there’s some dark aspects to this book. Leah’s done a brilliant job at bringing these characters to life in just one book. I honestly feel like I’ve known them for a whole series already. The ending?! I’m left with so many questions and needing the answers asap!! Leah never disappoints with her books and I have always said Dead Darkness was my favourite series by her, until now! With just one book currently out it’s taken my top spot of favourite series by her🫶🏼 Don’t sleep on it, get reading!!
Well, I knew this was going to be emotional.but dang, this was a Rollercoaster. Raina is a poster in trouble. Alone, depressed, abused, and hooked on drugs, she wants it all to stop. She gets out of the hospital and rehab to find that her reputation is even more tanked because of her evil record label. But now she has to even hire a new band. She is shocked this new band is so good and is led by her ex bestfriend who broke his promise. But Tristan has had a vindictive plan along to destroy what's left of her for breaking his heart. The bandmates Nash, Blake, and Keaton see quickly that this situation tween Tristan and her is not adding up feom his pov and also how she reacts. The guys start to help hr and fall for her while Tristan is ready to burn it all down. This has a lot of abuse and suicidal thoughts, so please be aware if that triggers you. I loved keaton Nash and Blake. I think the plot line woth Blake's Confidence issue with his glasses was a little bit of a stretch. But Tristan was a huge a hole. To the point I am not sure he's redeemable. You see, the whole time Raina and Him were played, even the guys can see it, so that got really annoying when Tristan is just becoming more unhinged. My heart broke for Raina. I wished the guys stuck up for her sooner as well. I do like the way it was revealed at the end, so Tristan sees the truth since it woild have been hard through his hate. The book had me hooked to learn more for sure.
Have you ever fallen into a story so well written that you feel like you can relate to that person, even though there is ✨ABSOLUTELY✨ no common ground between you and the characters?
No? Well with this story you just might!
This was an up all night read. Between Raina’s story of past abuse (multiple kinds) & then a small glimmer of hope her men start to give her. I could NOT put it down.
Though I will warn you with all the triggers, it may Feel like a beyond dark read for some (SA-Drugs- attempted suicide to name a few)
While I’m trying to be mindful of spoilers, I will say an ex friend is involved and trying their hand at being vengeful and making Raina miserable. That’s all I’ll say for now 🙊
P.S THIS IS A CLIFFY. I knew from the start, with the “survival records book 1” I’d be in for it. But DAMNIT I love Leah’s work and could resist starting this series. AND MAN DO I REGRET IT! Not because the story line terrible, far from it, but because of how hard I wanted to rage and cry and act a fool about where things left off. Like LEAH HOW COULD YOU.
Anywho, if trigger warning are like a beacon call, this books for you!
As a whole: 5/5 Med burn Spice:🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ Mult POV trigger warnings- all day
Okay well I've been preaching this book all over book pages for days on end now. First things first, read the trigger warnings before you read the book if you have any triggers. With that said, oof. So Raina is a lost popstar who's been melded by the sharks of the music industry and trauma. After a significant event and some time away from the fame, she is thrown into a situation she never could have imagined. Introducing, her men. We've got Keaton the mute drummer, Blake the quiet nerdy type, and Nash, the over confident one who makes himself known from his first appearance. And then we have Tristan. 🙄 All the guys have such different personalities that all somehow seem to merge perfectly with each other and Raina. Except Tristan. We get the angst, we get the frustration, we freaking want Tristan to open his eyes and realise what he's missing. And we get a really awesome storyline amongst all that. I haven't read a Rockstar RH before, and I think I've found my new favourite trope. Leah has done a fantastic job, to the point where I've complained to her more than once about how late this book has kept me up reading. Stellar read and probably one I'll read again in the near future. I can't wait for the second!
I had high hopes for this book, because rockstar and RH are my favorite tropes, and despite the tons of them that are out there, they all end up becoming an average forgettable read as soon as you close the book. I'm looking for one of those books thay will stay with you for long after you finish it but haven't had any luck so far. The story has potential, guess I'll have to wait and see where it goes in book 2. I liked that the guys are decently fleshed out, unlike other RH, where they just meld together and you can't tell who's who. And I also liked the emotional aspect of the story. The pace of it however, drove me nuts and plot wise I feel like very little happened in those 300 pages, we learn about Raina and Tristan's past history, her ab*se, the trouble she is in with the label and she hooks up with 2 of the guys and that's pretty much it so the ending felt a bit anti climatic, him finding out like that what really happened rather than them talking it out. Not a fan of the misscomunication thing. Overall I feel like the book could have been longer, going in more detail over the guys issues, Nash and Keaton specially while also more fast paced. I found some overly descriptive scenes on barely relevant parts that had me skim reading to get to the good stuff.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Holy freaking encore! 👏🏼 Disclaimer: I am NOT a fan of rockstar trope. But Oh My Holy Rock Gods! This book has me absolutely consumed me!
This story deals with very heavy topics! So please be sure to check the trigger warnings before diving! My heart absolutely broke for Raina and her situation. I wanted to reach through the book and wrap her in a big hug.
Raina is our pop rock princess that finds herself at the top of her career in the view of the fans, but absolutely ensnared in the behind the scenes evils that the people she thought she could trust have forced her into.
When she finds herself needing a new band, she never thought it would bring about a blast from the past. When her old best friend turned enemy and his band mates are forced to move into her home, things quickly get complicated. So many misconceptions, so many lies, so many webs that have been weaved that they all find themselves a part of now.
I can’t say too much without giving things away, but I will say that while your heart bleeds for this story - the cliffhanger will destroy you so buckle up! I wanted to cry, I wanted to shout, I wanted to rage and throw my kindle - but I was frozen in shock. 100% shook to my core and I need more of this story like I need my next breathe!
A top read of the year? It’s definitely a possibility.
WOW 😯 JUST WOW 🤯 Raina’s story is just the kind of roller coaster that excites & thrills you making you wanna scream, but also tears you up & strikes fear in your heart when you least expect it. I found myself squealing in excitement, fanning myself, on the edge of my seat, yelling, crying, and shaking my head A LOT 🤦🏻♀️ I swear, if it’s an emotion, I may have possibly felt it during this book 😂 These characters & their emotions just fly off the page. Watching Raina & these guys together just tore my heart out, put it back together, and started the whole process over & over again, especially with that ending 😭 All of the guys, Nash, Blake, Tristan & Keaton brought a different vibe & purpose to the table, but I gotta admit that Keaton was my favorite 🥵😍…..at least so far 😉 I’ll only say one more thing….I hope Tristan is prepared to invest in some good knee pads going into the next book 😒😝 And I’ll be over here hyperventilating every time I realize I have to sit here and patiently (not really patiently) wait for the next book to come out so that I can watch Raina & ALL of her guys fight for the HEA they all deserve 🙌🏻❤️
Wow! What can I say?! This book took me on an emotional rollercoaster that I was on no way prepared for!
Raina is a musician whose fame is not all it seems, dealing with depression due to the things she’s had to deal with, Raina lands herself in rehab. Thinking she can finally move on she soon finds out that’s not the case when her label force her to find a new band to work with.
Keaton, Blake, Nash & Tristan blind audition and no one could be happier than Tristan when they are chosen. Raina finds herself drawn to them even though Tristan feels he needs revenge for what he believes happened when they were younger.
I love Raina as a character she has had a lot to deal with in her life but she still finds the inner strength to keep going. Seeing her soften and open herself up to Keaton, Blake and Nash had me feeling all the feelings. The boys all have their own demons to deal with but seeing them all open up to Raina and how their relationship grows and deepens made me so happy. However, I’m not a fan of Tristan at the moment and he has a lot of making up to do to Raina and I want to see her really make him work for it.
The emotional rollercoaster ride of this book was intense. At different points in the book I had been laughing, crying, and in a complete fit of rage. Rainie was such an easy character to connect with. Her hurt, loneliness, and shame were so palpable while reading. Leah did such an amazing job with her character and I can't wait to see how much she changes in the next book.
From the first meeting with the guys I wasn't quite sure what to expect from them. Would they follow in the steps of someone adamant on getting revenge or make their own judgment on Rainie? I was so surprised with how easily their relationships developed with Rainie and the bonds they formed with her. Their companionship and love was exactly what she needed. Granted, it wouldn't fix her completely or make her past disappear, but it would definitely bring her back to a point where she could learn to love herself and her music again.
The cliffhanger of this book was incredible! I loved seeing how everything unfolded and how big secrets were revealed. Now hopefully we will be getting some major groveling and a different kind of revenge. And on the people that actually deserve it this time!
Lyrics That Burn is the first book in the Survival Records series. This does end in a cliffhanger.
Where the hell do I even begin??? First, Rockstar/band tropes are usually a hit or miss (50/50) with me. This one, however, was most definitely a hit. Most Rockstar books paint this glamorous lifestyle, but Leah Steele painted more of the underbelly of the industry and it felt so realistic.
There's so much pain and trauma, that one person can take and for Raina, this girl, my God, I can't even begin to imagine. Not only from her shady, villainous, label and immediate family but a former best friend. I loved the support system she had. Nash, Keaton, and Blake really brought her lighterside out! There's nothing I love more than when the rest of the group has completely different personalities but compliments the FMC in different ways. I do have hope for Tristan, BUUUT, I'm also hoping for INTENSE groveling. It takes a lot for me to start tearing up, but this made me, like multiple times. Can't wait for the next one!!
”Today might not be my day, but like a phoenix, I’ll rise from the ashes stronger than ever. Every cut, jab, and slice makes me more resilient. Eventually, my skin will be made of diamonds.”
LEAH THE EMOTIONAL DAMAGE
my girl Raina has been through it. we all know how toxic the music industry is, and this gives you the worst of the worst. and somehow it gets even worse for Raina when it seems her worlds collide.
Keaton tho, is one of my fav types of mmcs. he’s the broody drummer that does not speak ever nor let anyone touch his drumsticks, but of course Raina is the exception. Nash is her ray of sunshine. and Blake, well, we are still learning about Blake. but i think he might need Raina just as much as she’ll need him. but then you have Tristan, the ex-best friend who hates Raina and do anything to destroy her.
i cannot wait for the next book and the groveling that Tristan will need to do. i really hope Raina and the guys put him through it. but learning about everything that she has gone through, i am so ready for Raina to fxck everyone else and become the artist she wants to really be.
MFMMM multi-POV medium burn ex-best friend cliffy
CW: the author has a full list of TWs I would recommend reviewing, including suicide attempt on page, mentions of past sexual abuse as an adult and minor, drug use, drug abuse, bullying from mmc
I'm back in my rockstar/popstar RH era, and I couldn't be happier! I've missed the madness that comes with the lifestyle of the rich and famous. Not even a full chapter into Lyrics That Burn and I knew I was going to be obsessed and in this series for the long haul.
Raina is the poster child for being a popstar princess in the media's eyes. Anything she can do to prove them right-she will do it. You learn relatively quickly her reasons and simply can not help but validate them. Despite her own problems, Raina holds a heart filled with good intentions.
Tristan, Keaton, Blake, and Nash come in STRONG. We get a different personality with each guy, and you can't help wanting to love them. Well, for the most part. The tension between the guys gets thick and not in a fun way. (For them)
Their drama will have you on the edge of your seat! There's an introduction to some spice, but nothing that takes over the story-not yet. Once that spark is lit, though, it'll be 🔥🔥🔥
Addictive, heartbreaking, and so good! Lyrics That Burn is truly a scrumptious RH read. It centers around Raina, and the soul suck that can exist in music industry. Her pain is on so many of the pages in this book. And if being torn apart, by the industry that has taken advantage of her, wasn't enough, events lead to her ex best friend being thrust back into her life to shred what's left. She doesn't know if his friends/bandmates are there to do their job or help him drag her down.
The author did a great job in making readers experience the pain and insecurities that plagued the characters in this book. As well as the frustration with that came from the miscommunication between Raina and Tristan. Someone should've locked them in a room until they talked things out. But with that cliffhanger at the end, we'll have to wait and see what happens in the next book. I look forward to seeing everyone get what's coming to them.
This is probably my #1 book I've read this year! 💯
The emotions this story pulled out of me were unreal. I laughed, I got mad, and I cried. I felt it all! The writing is so REAL. The characters own a piece of my heart already, and I NEED the next book like I need air to breathe.
Leah is a phenomenal author! And this book is EVERYTHING, more than I could have asked for! I love all of her books, BUT THIS is... this is her BEST to date! 🙌🏻 I always know she's going to tell a good story but dangggg. This was so MUCH MORE!!! It's about strength and regaining your power, regaining control. The FMC is a strong @ss b*tch and I can't wait for her to get her revenge. (I feel like it's definitely coming) 😏
Just read it. The spice, the story, the roller coaster of emotions... it's all wrapped nicely in this book. Seriously amazing!!! 🔥🔥🔥
Anddd can we just talk about my man, Keaton?! And them drum sticks... whew Chile! That's all I'm saying. 🥵
Raina after 5 yrs in the industry making music, the love she once had has dimmed, those who were supposed to be there for her all but abandoned her. She turned to drugs to numb herself until she attempted suicide. Once she comes out of rehab she is manipulated once again and told she has contractual obligations to still meet and she has to choose a new band to complete the rest of her concert,Shocked is the least of her emotions after her best friend that ghosted her 5 yrs previously is one of the band mates.
Tristian, Blake, Nash and Keaton are her new band mates and oh yeah they are also her house mates. Tristian has a chip on his shoulder named Raina, had he wants to make sure she falls further than ever. However his 3 best friends see something different in her.
This is an Enemy to Lover RH, get the tissues out and enjoy the ride because it also leaves us with a cliffhanger.
This is the first book I’ve read from the author and it was amazing. Just loved it. I went through so many different emotions with this book. Raina deserves all things good in her life. Everyday is a battle for her. She’s barely surviving when her ex-best friend Tristan comes back into her life with his 3 best friends Nash, Keaton and Blake. Tristan is intent on making her life miserable with the help of his best friends. His best friends see something in Raina that makes them want to dig deeper. Not everything is as it seems and they are quickly learning that. They are giving her some hope and trying to get Tristan to let go of his revenge and for him to give her a chance so that he can see what they already see in her. This cliffhanger is something else. Need the second book like yesterday. It was so good.
