This darkly comedic twist on the British Gangster genre combines razor-sharp satire with heart-pounding action, delivering a rollercoaster ride, that will leave readers laughing themselves off the edge of their seat. Prepare for a hilariously bonkers caper through the high-stakes criminal world of 'Fruit' - a novel that defies expectations and dares to reimagine the conventions of crime fiction.
Will is the first-time author of the satirical British crime thriller 'Fruit'. He moved to the South West 3 years ago and has been trying to escape its rain and cream teas ever since. His first book is a journey into rural England's weirdness and the criminal underworld that is always lurking just under the skin of normal life in the UK.
Fruit is set amongst the bloody fruit stalls of rural English, a place all too familiar to Will as a lover of cherries and potholes. He has written several yet-to-be-released 'best sellers' and expects all his books will sell in their millions and be made into high-budget Hollywood blockbusters. He is prepared for disappointment however and has been since coming second in a literary competition with one entrant.
He has a keen interest in crime fiction novels, ideally with a sprinkling of dark comedy for good measure and will be writing regular reviews in his blog of other people's far superior books.
He aspires to be as good as the 2nd worst author you have ever read. Help him reach that goal by buying a copy of his latest mind vomits online now.
Absolutely insane and hilarious. I snorted my way through this brilliant debut novel (laughter not drugs obviously).
Adam is back in Britain after an enforced stay in Spain. He's looking for a nice, peaceful nothing of a job that'll keep him in funds and out of bother. A position selling fruit in a lay-by? Couldn't be duller right?
So wrong. What follows is an utterly bonkers tale of hooky fruit, New Forest weirdos, terrifying families, Police, more fruit, Wimbledon, a psychotic fruit-flinging boss, an even more worrying amount of violence, yet more fruit and a suave, sophisticated baguette-wielding French hitman.
Not sure what else you need except to say that the peaceful summer job lazing about and scoffing the odd strawberry soon descends into nighttime raids in dairy farms, more strawberries than you've ever believed existed and Adam moving up the company chain to a level that could get him injured, jailed or even killed - who knew fruit could be so dangerous.
I loved this book. If you don't mind a bit of violence, swearing and crimes against strawberries then I beg you to read this. I think this has to be my favourite summer read ever. Thankyou Will Heron.
Who would have thought that fruit selling from a lay by in the south west of England would lead to a life in the criminal underworld? If fruit selling obvs! Adam certainly didn’t think so when he took on the job to get him back on the employment scene after his extended holiday in Spain - AKA time in jail. It was much more than he was expecting - not all caravans and retirement!
The language is this book is in line with the title - fruity! - but it adds to the atmosphere when the fruit based criminal are discussing their enemies - and each other. Dave and Terry certainly turn the air blue at times but it’s so funny 😂 they really are a pair of great characters.
Full of dark humour and witticisms, this had me chuckling from the outset. Adam is such a loser but such a likeable character, you can’t help but smile at his antics.
It takes me back to many summers travelling down the A303 to Cornwall and seeing all the fruit stall signs through Wiltshire - tbh I’ve never stopped once at these as I was always sure I’d get ripped off and the prices weren’t what they said they were. Who knew they would be so successful?
If you like laughs, gangsters and strawberries 🍓 this is definitely for you 😆
Oh my god, this book is BRILLIANT!! It's absolutely hilarious with lots of sweary words and genius storyline.
Adam thinks he is going to get an easy job selling fruit in lay-bys during Summer, well, he certainly does sell fruit and then a lot more. He goes on a hilarious crime spree with the most outrageous characters. Mr Baguette was a particular favourite that stood out. I belly laughed all the way through, I could easily picture this on TV. Honestly, this has shot up to be one of my favourite reads this year, it was perfect to read and gave me a right boost.
If you want a lighthearted (but sweary) funny read, this is for you! I'm going to laugh each time I drive by one of these lay-bys! Strawberries or Cherries?
As you can tell by the unique name of this book you’re going to be in for a wild ride!
I loved how the author wrote this action packed thriller, right from the beginning you are in on the drama and get to meet Adam the mc and as far as characters go he’s such a relatable and interesting person that you can’t help but be sucked into his story from the start.
This was such a never seen by me before plot that had tons of twists and turns that kept me on my toes during the whole book. I love how we went from selling fruit to the underground criminal underworld in such a smooth transition I didn’t even question it, this read was full of humour, mystery and action and I was loving every second of it!
If you’re looking for your next thriller novel that you will most definitely be reading in a day then you need to pick up FRUIT! I hope to be reading more by this author soon.
First time author Will Heron smashes out the park!
Think A303, think lay-bys with strawberries for sale, think of the innocents it appears from selling strawberries in a lay-by from the local farm, the think again.
Gangland style territories, fake traffic jams and a hitman called Mr Baguette.
You will not be disappointed in this book! Buy it! Read it! Give it your friends to read!
“Fruit” is different from any other book I’ve read. Adam thinks a job selling strawberries at a lay-by in England will be a good way to ease into a responsible life, but nothing could be further from the truth.
Loved the humor. Some of the descriptions of caravaners and German electro music had me laughing out loud. So did the name of Mr. Baguette.
Didn’t love some of the violence and some of the language. There’s a particular word Will Heron overuses, in my opinion, and other words could have been used instead.
Still, this book kept me entertained and is impressive for a first novel. I would read other books by this author.
I received an advance review copy for free from BookSirens, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Genuinely enjoyed this. If you enjoyed films like Snatch, The Gentlemen etc etc you'll love this book. Funny throughout, characters are not especially annoying, just light hearted, silly fun, featuring crime
Would not recommend if you can't tolerate swearing.
When I saw Will Heron was following me on Goodreads I decided to check him out. He is the author of this slapstick story about the illegal fruit business. Adam is the main character and a hapless loser who gets involved in the criminal side of the action. I’m not a fan of mob/gangster stories, but this one moved quickly. The ending was not as satisfying as it could be, but made sense given the plot and characters. It’s not for every reader as the language is vulgar—as one would expect from this set of characters, but still off putting.
This book was so much fun. It is about the criminal world of fruit selling. There was action, humour and wonderfully quirky characters. I found myself smiling as I read about the criminal offences and wild tales escapades involving strawberries.
This is a great debut by Will Heron. The main character Adam is totally loveable and you find yourself routing for him throughout. Some parts felt a little ‘laddish’ but it was certainly a fun, engaging read and as someone who likes a bit of dark humour it definitely had me laughing along. I’ll be keeping an eye out for more books by this author in the future!
A brilliant collection of characters in a ludicrous situation. If Quentin Tarantino took up greengrocery then "Fruit" would be the outcome. Fun, witty and crammed with British pop culture references
I thought this book was by Nick Herron of "Slow Horses" fame and wondered how he could be so diverse in his writing and then it dawned on me, not the same bloke! BUT I enjoyed this book immensly. It is well written with some great characters all descibed well. I agree with Mr Heron, it would make a great film with Hugh Grant as Adam and Ray Winstone as the boss. Come on Heron write another one!
This has all the easy flow, naturalistic language, and surrealistic gangster situations typical of Elmore Leonard. Will Heron definitely has a future as a writer.
In this book we meet Adam who is one of life's victims. He has just returned from a "holiday" in Spain and when I say "holiday" I don't mean the sort you voluntarily serve in a hotel! Anyway, he is a bit down on his luck so he agrees to take a job covering holiday for a lay-by fruit seller... Expecting an easy life, he is shocked when the actual ins and outs of lay-by fruit selling is exposed... with occasional tragic and often funny outcomes... I loved this book from the moment I read the synopsis. I had it down in my head as being a tad bonkers in nature and, indeed, it is just that. But it is oh so more and really opened my eyes about what I actually believe to be the wholly credible workings of an interesting industry. Oh how disappointed I will be if I am proved wrong - but hey ho! Anyway... I took to Adam right from the start. He's one of life's victims I guess but he doesn't really let that get him down too much. And this is proved by the way he throws himself into his new job. Rather than run at the first sign of trouble, or the second, or third, he actually, well... you'll have to read the book to find out the detail. I'm not about to spoil things. Where I expected a light read, some of it was quite deep, and also a tad political. But also very much tongue in cheek. It's hard to really explain without giving examples but you really need to sample all the delights delivered by this story as the author intends. Suffice to say I did get the odd funny look when I burst out laughing on the bus. All in all a cracking read that I thoroughly enjoyed. I really can't wait to see what the author has in store for next time.
Big thanks to @willheronwrites for asking me for sending me a copy of this wonderful book 🖤🍓
When Adam gets a job selling fruit in a country layby, he expects to have a hassle free summer. However, lurking beneath the quintessential English countryside setting is a hidden criminal underworld. Adam soon discovers that there is a lot more to his job than just selling strawberries to gullible tourists. He finds himself unwittingly involved in a series of conflicts that only escalate as the summer progresses.
At first glance, this book probably doesn’t look like my usual read, but I fell in love with it pretty quickly. I loved the concept behind this - and it was executed perfectly. For a crime comedy, it ticks all of the boxes. It’s fast-paced, unique, a little bit dark, very clever, and full of pitch-perfect humour.
Adam is a great character - despite how questionable his actions become as the novel goes on, he still remains likeable. He takes every challenge as it comes and usually manages to come out on top, in a sort of charming blundering idiot way. The gangsters he gets involved with are also hilarious despite how dark their dealings may be!
This is the perfect summer read, and was a real palate cleanser compared to my usual horror reads. Packed full of action, strawberries, hatred towards caravans, coffee, swear words, and humour, this was just so much fun. I had a real riot with this, I genuinely enjoyed every second.
I received an ARC of this book for an honest review.
I really enjoyed this book.
Adam is in his 30s. He’s a drifter, never really settled into any steady work or profession since leaving school. He’s just returned to England from a year in Spain and is looking for some light casual work for the summer. A friend sets him up to sell fruit from a stall at a roadside lay-by.
His boss is Dave, with Terry, Hans and Gregg. Adam soon settles into roadside selling and has a few innovative ideas which he relays to his boss. Soon Adam is working his way up the “corporate ladder” to become a trusted member of the team.
However selling fruit can be a dangerous game!
I really did enjoy this book, it’s a bit like Guy Ritchie’s “Lock stock and two smoking barrels”. It begins as quite a light and funny read, but as the book goes on becomes much much darker to Adams consternation. The language also becomes coarser, however given the situation it’s not too disturbing. There is quite a lot of violence and drug usage, but it’s not too over the top.
I laughed a lot and was never bored. If you like a light(ish) gangster theme then you’ll love this book. Who knew selling strawberries could be such an adventure!
I won this book as part of a giveaway: if you read the description, it literally gives the entire book away and there is nothing at all you are missing by reading the rest of the book. It is boring. This book is also not “criminally funny”, and you will find nothing redeeming about the characters at all, in any way. I struggled to read it, and it took me a long time to get through it over a period of months. Normally I am a speed reader who devours any and all books. This was not something I enjoyed and I felt happy when I could put it down. I love thrillers and suspense novels and they usually keep me on the edge of my seat reading into the wee hours. This is not that. However, after I finished this book, I promptly had my faith in good books restored and read two great ones in short order. So I guess it made me appreciate good books more?
This was laugh-out-loud funny. Who knew selling fruit was this dangerous a business. It is such a fun read.
I don't find many books as funny as this one because it can be difficult to get this sort of absurd, 'what the fuck is happening?' humour right, and that is the sort of humour I really enjoy in certain books. This author did it brilliantly. I don't know, however, if you will get all of the references and jokes if you aren't from Britain, so that might put some people off.
This was just a great book that gave a fantastic reading experience. I will be keeping an eye on this author.
It is hard to convey just how funny this book is. Without swearing.
This book is absolutely hysterical. The funniest book I have read this year, and beyond. I was genuinely laughing on the train reading it. The swearing perfectly fits the characters and storyline too.
From the slightly gullible Adam, Dave the Lock Stock geeza running the show, Hans the German, the various caravan bores and all the side characters who make this fruit industry function - brilliant stuff Mr Heron.
It might only be a sub 5 hour book but this got nailed on two commuting.
The most disappointing thing is there isn't another book by the author to read now. What am I supposed to read now....?
As a fellow, first time author myself, it was an immediate draw to read Will Heron's "Fruit", a humorous read similar to my own humour and style of writing, albeit a very different genre.
Will has managed to bring back many childhood memories for me of the West Country, as well as the rural way of life, including the fruit pickers, stands and the quirky characters - and all done with added laughs and brilliantly described scenarios.
If you want a book to read over a few hours, take a moment and check it out.
From the blurb I knew this was going to be a funny book and wasn’t disappointed. I literally laughed out loud as the mood was set in the first few pages as Adam found himself in a new career involving lots of strawberries and cherries. I did find it a little ‘samey’ in the middle and maybe a bit too far fetched with gangster style violence in it, but generally it was a decent enough story with plenty of laughs through it too as well as an ending that I did find conclusive rather than just leaving it too open.
A story that follows Adam, a pothead who just recently returned to England. Jobless and prospect less he gets roped into selling fruit in a layway. When he makes a profitable decision to add whipped cream to his sales, sales were sky high. So the boss, Terry gives him a promotion. His promotion involves collecting all the cash from the other layway workers (college students who Adam recruited) and depositing stacks of money to various banks, takes him a minute but he realizes what this is. But wait, he’s wrong. Or is he?
This is about the darker side of selling fruit from a lay-by. Adam starts as a fruit seller and quickly escalates to something a million miles away from the sweet strawberries they are selling. Who knew selling fruit could be like this!
With dodgy fruit deals, drugs, and a hitman, this is very different from my normal reads. This will certainly appeal to those who enjoy the grittier/crazy kind of living.
Adam, back after spending time in a Spanish prison, has found a job back in the UK to make ends meet. He's selling fruit in a lay-by. It turns out he's a small cog in a big machine. This is a funny book, and I love some of the turns of phrase. This is not your usual 'people solving crimes' book. It explores the seedy underbelly of crime, and how easy it is to get sucked in, especially if you find you have a talent you didn't know about.
I absolutely loved this book! It has great humor and some pretty awesome characters. It's great if you're looking for a more chill, short book. It's a breath of fresh air in the sea of books, you'll have a hard time finding any like it. It was so good in fact, Im a little disappointed that the author doesn't have any other books out yet, If there were- I would have read them faster than you can say strawberries and cream.
I usually get bored of books and can't finish them, this I couldn't put down, reminded me of lock, stock or snatch movies. Very funny great pace and easy to read for a newbie reader who usually gets bored 20 pages into a book , I'd recommend to anyone looking for a funny, crime book that never takes itself too seriously , If the author writes another book I'm definitely buying it!!!
A hilarious tale that will appeal to readers who enjoy British humour and Guy Ritchie's early films that were typically brimming with eccentric characters, comedy of errors, and all types of fun. I loved the plot and found it to be original. The writing is LOL, and the book is brilliant, considering it is by a debut author. All the best, Will. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
