Rate this book
My Town is a new offering from the same author and illustrator of our popular titles, My Day and My Car Trip. Continuing with the same characters as these two prior titles, My Town features the young boy and his father having a wonderful time making a map as they explore their neighborhood. As they explore, the boy learns where he lives in relation to various places and landmarks in the town. Through this charming story, young readers will learn a lot about maps, including how to make and use their own maps.

An excellent book about learning your way around town.
A boy and his father draw a map of key places around town, and then use it to find their way to the ice cream shop.
This is a read together book, so the left-hand side has a couple of sentences for the parent to read, and the right side has one simple word (that rhymes with the rest of the text) for your child to read.

The end of the book offers a couple of suggestions of map-making activities to do with your children.
The starter project is a map of your house.
I have a son who is interested in maps, and has a keen sense of direction. We loved this book.

I have and like the Usborne series that encourages parents to read with their kids. THis book seems to be a precursor to that idea. There is nothing wrong with that idea, but the words in this particular book are a bit challenging for beginning readers, especially those who are taught phonics. For example, silent "e" makes preceding vowel long (or, as we say, 'magic e makes the vowel say its name.') then this book puts out the word "shoe."
