What if you had to watch, helpless as a young child’s life was slowly being snuffed out before it had even really begun? What if you were given the opportunity to save that child’s life, to change fate? What would you be willing to do? Would you be willing to make the ultimate sacrifice? A young doctor is faced with watching his young charge slowly die when an elderly man in a nursing care facility gives him a mysterious tome that magically offers Alcott the opportunity to meet several challenges, which, should he win, will allow young Gari will live, but he will have no memory of the doctor. A daunting challenge, but the caveat is that winning will also mean that Alcott must give his life for Gari’s. Each obstacle is more intimidating, more dangerous and there is no guarantee that Alcott will even survive this challenge, at which point, he knows Gari will still die. Should he take the challenge and try to beat each obstacle? Will he have allies or make enemies along the way? Is there more to this game than meets the eye?

Obstacles by debut author Chris Reardon is an action-packed fantasy that took me on an emotionally charged journey into another dimension as I watched heroes rise and fall in an attempt to save those they cared about. Mr. Reardon does not give us over-the-top heroes, but real people who have gone above and beyond even their wildest dreams on pure instinct and out of true selflessness. His writing is finely detailed and his plot is truly unique in a world filled with the paranormal genre!

There is a fresh face in the writing world that shows great promise, so if you’re looking for a fantasy that contains real heroes, real action and sacrifice, in a world where you will actually be able to visualize every scene as it unfolds, you might want to try Chris Reardon’s Obstacles!

The best quote about Obstacles was once quoted by the French playwright and actor, who is considered one of the greatest masters of comedy in Western literature- Jean-Baptiste Poquelin "Molière",
“The greater the obstacle, the more glory in overcoming it.”

Similarly, in the debut book, Obstacles by an American author, named, Christopher Reardon, obstacles are the one thing that keeps the primary character, Alcott, who is a doctor, from saving a nine-year old's life. But his obstacles are painfully difficult and brain-stormingly challenging to overcome.

First, a huge thanks to the author, Christopher Reardon for sending me over a copy of his book, in return for an honest review.

Blurb given on the back of the book :

A child will die. You're afraid to live. Would you go to all lengths to save him? Darkness knows no bounds, as Alcott, an African American doctor sees all too well. The man is petrified by death. His fragile existence rests at the mercy of the universe. This fact is far too much for him to handle. From unyielding nightmares to elevator terrors, he's lost in paranoia.

Assigned to look after an ill child, Alcott's horrors only heighten. Gari is a nine-year-old boy with a fatal disease. He will surely pass on within the year. Alcott bonds with him more and more each day. Part of him knows this grim fate just isn't right.

Alcott befriends a hospital patient. This lunatic forces him to lug home an ancient text on bringing back the dead. Despite the man's obvious dementia, Alcott attempts the scheme. Charging up a cliff, he recites the chant over ocean gusts.

A god woman glides in from the horizon. She instructs Alcott on the trials to save Gari's life. These fearsome Obstacles require true strength. From battling sharks to wielding a flail, he must prove fortitude against genuine danger. Alcott decides his fate at this moment.

Death's claws shall not grasp Gari's soul.

Well firstly, the author could not get a grip on his characters, especially, on the protagonist and hence, I couldn't be able to connect with him on a personal level and couldn't even feel his emotions. Although, I could feel his fear and the phobia towards death before saving a child's life, still I couldn’t relate to the primary character, while I can see that in almost all the reviews people are screaming about his use of reality! The plot and the concept was quite unusual, so hats off to the author for his imagination skills and for including so many striking power-packed actions in this fantasy novel, thus giving an edge to the book. Still somewhere the plot felt short, within Alcott's world and the god woman's realms. Although, Alcott kept us engaged to some extent with his loquacious dialogues, but sometimes he badgered us with his emotions and fears.

It's quite evident that Alcott's every action, upon falling for that magical realm, changes the course of his fate. And in this book, the emotions run quite deep. But most of the times, I felt so out-of-place. I wish the author had more eloquently unfolded the mystery about that enthralling fantasy related to death.

I have given this book four stars because the plot is intriguing. Although the writing style is good, it does need some attention and I'm not sure if all rings true with the main character. There are extremes of emotion, to such an extent that I wonder if the stress of which wouldn't put anyone into an early grave.

However, it was a good, interesting read, the idea thought-provoking and clever, delving into the science - or myth - of how to cheat death.

The fantastic adventures in the story take the reader first-hand into the mind of determined but quivering hero. We live each moment of his challenges--each worse than the last when he arrives in an unknown place with sic other contestants--all with the same aim of saving the life of someone they care about. The plot carried me away to a reality where every normal expectation is overturned and only raw courage will suffice.

What an amazing book! I'm not even sure where to begin! I love the way this story was written, not to mention the pure creativity that is in this story. An action packed fantasy novel it keeps you on the edge, as well as bring up hard questions. Would you give your life for a sick childs..even if you were afraid of dying?

Reardon does a great job developing his characters and bringing them to life as well as painting wonderful pictures of the obstacles Alcott and his companions have to go through.

I enjoyed reading this book and I'm glad I got the chance too. I think young adults and adults alike will enjoy this novel. You really just need to be a fan of fiction novels to enjoy this story.

Detailed Review: *I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review*

A review has been long due for this book; I actually read it last year, but unfortunately at that time school got in the way, so I never had the chance to voice my thoughts on Obstacles.

It was a short read, and a fast-paced one. I finished it in a matter of hours.

You want to know more? Think The Hunger Games.

This book is about a man who fears death, but a boy who is diagnosed with a chronic illness gave him the courage and determination to sacrifice himself.

The sacrifice involves a set of obstacles which he has to overcome. If he passes them, the boy will live.

However, there's a catch.

Alcott's existence will be erased from the boy's life. He will not remember him, or thank him for what the doctor has done.

I was really surprised at how taken I was with the book. I literally. Could. Not. Stop. Reading.

Page after page after page after page. I couldn't even stop if I wanted to my hands were flipping the pages so fast.

The obstacles that Alcott had to go through were ones I found funny at times and scary at others. I mean, battling a gigantic mosquito? Um, I do not want to experience that, not even in my dreams.

I have to give the author credit for his wonderful imagination. I tell you, he's got a creative streak. I could tell from reading his book.

The characters had unique and original backgrounds too. But they all had one similarity: they were willing to sacrifice themselves for the people they loved. And I was touched by that fact.

I wouldn't have thought Reardon would have it in him, but he bravely put in one twist that changed everything, EVERYTHING, in the book. I was so surprised and shocked, I almost dropped the book.

This book is almost like the indie version of The Hunger Games.

Sadly, no matter how much I convinced my co-blogger Chloe that she should read it, she said no.

Why?

The cover. That was the reason she gave me.

And if you don't know by now, Chloe is a massive cover-judger ( I can be one too but I often make exceptions) and she absolutely did not want to pick up the book because she didn't think the cover was nice.

That story up there holds a message: DON'T be like Chloe. I'm not mad at her for not reading the book, but I'd appreciate it if people could learn to not judge books by their covers, because, sometimes, the cover can't often be a show of the content, whether it's good or bad.

So please, give books like Obstacles a chance.

Brief Review: The author obviously has a really good imagination, and I believe he couldn't have written Obstacles as well as he did without it. But ultimately, this isn't just about your darkest fears, it's about sacrificing yourself for the people you love .Be prepared to face your fears in this book because anything can happen. If you want a fast-paced read that is short, I definitely recommend Obstacles!!!

Final Rating: 5/5 'Totally Amazing!'

I received a free physical copy of this book from the author in exchange for a honest review.

Obstacles by Christopher Reardon is a Young Adult Fantasy/Paranormal novel about Alcott, Alcott is a live in doctor and his patient, nine year old Gari who is suffering from a terminal illness. Alcott, horrified by the injustice of this young life ending so soon, is extremely upset when another patient from his hospital gives him a book. A book of dark magic that may possibly change his fate and Gari's fate. Alcott who is ridden with paranoia and anxiety questions the legitimacy of this book but when Gari turns for the worse, he takes a chance. That's when he's offered the choice, his life for Gari's...But it comes with a hitch, he must go through the Obstacles if he wants this too happen. Can Alcott pass these Obstacles? Can he save Gari from passing?

My memory blurs with reality. Both become a mesh of the same. The only thing I'm sure of now is that I'm about to be killed.

I picked this book up today as I was in the mood for something new, something I hadn't heard anything about before, something fantastical. And I was certainly appeased. I always find with review copies that it takes me maybe a day or two to read them, just because I know so little about the book so I need time to involve myself with the plot. But I had no problems with that with Obstacles. I read it in less than three hours! The descriptions in this book were magical, the pathetic fallacy (proper literary terms, look at me) was really effective, the short chapters made the book pretty engaging and the obstacles were something that I couldn't think of.

The characters were interesting. My favourite was definitely Travis. I don't know why really but I really liked him (except for that one brief moment but we won't mention that now.) The characters in this book definitely had a depth that a lot of authors tend to miss out in their books, they all had a back story and they all seemed kind of realistic. My only issue was, although Alcott's anxiety helped develop his character, it kind of annoyed me in places. But that's just me.

Overall this was an entertaining read and I would really recommend you pick it up as it has a good, cohesive plot, it's engaging, it's unique and it's overall a very good debut novel. Well done and thank you Christopher Reardon!!

I challenge fate to change it's course, for what it's done. needs to reverse.

What a marvelous book to immerse yourself into! I literally finished this book in a matter of hours, because I couldn’t put it down! Chris Reardon you’ve just won yourself a new fan. Those, whom have followed me since the beginning, know that I can never turn down a YA Fantasy. I have read TONS, but by far this is the most refreshing. The plot, the characters, the overall purpose was enthralling. And, is that cover not gorgeous? I was immediately attracted.

Gari is a nine-year-old boy, whose life is ending very shortly. Alcott is his personal doctor. Not only to the characters in this book, but as the reader of it, I also find it a bit unfair for such a young life to be cut short of its chance to nourish, and experience the rest of the world. I am confident that many would do what Alcott did – asked the beyond for Gari to have another chance … even if it seemed impossible.

Alcott was a character I enjoy from the start of the book ‘til the very last page. Why? Because, he is normal, he has fears of death just as anyone would. He being a doctor does not change that fact. And I liked that. That Chris Reardon gave readers the notion that even those whose job is to try and save lives, they are not superhuman. I say I love Alcott, but I actually enjoyed ALL the characters in this book. They were so vibrant, lively, and unique. Each character was a tribute to how wonderful this book was!

Another unique aspect of this read, is that although a young adult fantasy, Alcott is very well into his 30's and there is no romance. I would say it is one of those books that parallels an action-packed family film. Something you can enjoy with the family. It's refreshing.

The obstacles.
I had to talk about this separately. What an idea! Chris Reardon is creative in that department .... creating a world that no other would have thought of! In order to save young Gari, Alcott has to complete certain obstacles that is challenged by the many unthinkable. Wow. I-there-is nothing I can say to describe how amazing this part of the premise was. YOU HAVE TO GET IT and find out for yourself!

Truly a great way to start the new year.

Wow! This book is amazing! You’ll be captured by it from the beginning until the end, not able to put it down.
It’s very clear and easy to read. The story is very exciting and the characters are downright wonderful. You’ll finish it in no time, way faster than you want it to.
Alcott is a very brave man, willing to risk his life to save another one. He has to pass different Obstacles to save this cute boy, Gari. During this adventure/journey, he discovers a lot about himself. How brave and strong he actually is.
Fortunately, he’s not on his own. He has four allies, all willing to make the same sacrifice. All four of them are remarkable creatures, who want to do what’s best. Especially Gretchen will grow on you.
I really loved the plot twists in it (yes, plural). They keep the story moving and electrifying. You want to know how it ends, what’s gonna happen next.
This book has short chapters, which works in it favor. In every chapter happens a lot, there is no bullshit or anything. It makes the story very fluent and smooth.
All in all, this book is very cool! If you’re still doubting whether to read it or not, just do it! ‘Cause it’s really awesome!

Alcott is a doctor that has wrapped himself in fears. When he has to look after a young dying patient, Gari, his fears wrap him even tighter. The more Alcott is around Gari, the more he starts connecting. It is just frustrating that nothing can be done to save Gari, he is not even expected to make it a year.

Then Alcott meets another patient that is showing classic signs of dementia. He insists that Alcott take this huge book about bringing the dead back to life. After reading the book, Alcott decides that he is going to try it to save Gari. When he follows the instructions, a goddess arrives and gives him direction to win each challenge. If Alcott wins, he is essentially exchanging his life for Gari’s. If he looses, Gari will still die. But he is not alone in his struggles; others are there competing for loved ones of their own.

For a first book, this is good. I liked the idea of the story but it could have been refined a little. Having said that, I really liked following the growth of Alcott. He goes from someone afraid of everything to being willing to give his own life for Gari. This is a good book and I do recommend reading it.

The Fear of Death Can Sometimes Be Worse Than Death Itself!

“Obstacles” is the story of a 9-year-old boy who is dying. Dr. Alcott monitors his health and creates an environment of support, tranquility, and care for him until the end. Dr. Alcott is terribly afraid of death and the unknown and can't bear the thought of Gari dying. He visits one of his patients who believes in magic and he gives him a book that if followed properly can reverse death and so the story begins.

This novel is about fantasy and magic. Not one to really read a lot of novels dealing with fantasy and things of this nature, I really didn't know what to expect. The novel really proved to be well written. The obstacles that Dr. Alcott had to overcome were things that he feared all of his life to save Gari's life. “Obstacles” illustrated a great message. I encountered a few errors, hence the 4-star rating. Overall, Christopher Reardon did a very good job.

Obstacles is a truly different book. It seems to be part novel, part fantasy, part adventure novel and part parable. It’s this unusual combination of elements together with its very different premise that makes it a compelling read.

Just imagine if you had the power to change someone’s life. But, in order to do so you had to forfeit your own. Would you do it? I’m not sure I would. It is complicated even more by the fact that in order to make the ultimate sacrifice you had to pass a series of trials first. If you don’t then you can’t offer yourself to the eternal void.

This is what happens to our hero and his companions in Obstacles. There is a twist in the tale, which very neatly forms a perfect figure of 8 as it loops back on itself again and I guarantee you won’t see it coming.

A challenging, well-written and captivating read that will ask you to consider that question for yourself.

I’ve just read Chris Reardon’s debut novel, Obstacles. In this action-filled fantasy, a doctor, Alcott is tasked with the care of a boy named Gari. Gari has just days to live and in order to save his charge, Alcott agrees to exchange his life for the child’s. After summoning a Goddess by using a spell from an ancient book and agreeing to her terms, he is taken to another world where he must compete in the Obstacles. Alcott must pass three of the obstacles if Gari’s life is to be spared.

As I read, I couldn’t help but think a little of The Hunger Games, because of the way in which other competitors (who also want to save a life) are pitted against one another. The concept was a good one and I thought, very clever. The novel, as a whole is a good first attempt by a budding author with a promising future.

Dr. Alcott faces the loss of a young patient, a vivacious boy whom he believes shouldn't die. When given the opportunity to change the young man's fate, he embarks on a test of endurance that challenges him on levels he's never achieved before. As a doctor suffering from night terrors, he has no clue just how frightening his decision to beat death really is.
Chris Reardon's fantasy novel of overcoming death challenges the reader from the first page. They're met with an improbably situation and find themself cheering for the overwhelmed doctor. The decision to cheat death is never an easy one, and Reardon plots that out well, giving us a very believable man of science up against impossible odds. There were points where the book faltered, but Reardon managed to pick up and take off again with breathtaking action I've come to expect from fantasy.

I really enjoyed reading Obstacles, not only was it a novel about a man who would do absolutely anything to help a young boy have his cancer reversed but it was full of adventure, strange beings and lots of action and there was no romance in sight which makes a great change.

By the end of the book you believe that anything is possible if you try hard enough which Alcott did.

The characters were well developed I liked them all, well until things were turned on their head and I started cursing them oops.

I was hoping for a HEA and I got that but I hoped that the book would end a little differently.

I raced through this book it kept me gripped from start to finish and I was sad when it ended.

Christopher Reardon is a fantastic author and I will be looking out for more from him in the future.

It was the story line that led me to this book. I was intrigued by the idea of a doctor trying to cheat death for his patient. It is action packed with the characters experiencing a wide range of challenges that draw you on to the next chapter. One of those 'just a few more pages' books, as your clock tells you it is time to get some sleep! The author's style is rather intense as everything happens to the maximum level, which can be a bit exhausting. It would have benefited from a change of pace in places. All in all though, a worthwhile read from a new author.

The whole thing was so sweet.
I have got nothing to say, but a guy risking so much (even his life) in a supernatural game to save the life of a little kid, that touched my heart.

And I know this review cannot be really long because I do not have many to say and I do not want to repeat my ideas, but this book is a must-read for those who want a Supernatural Story about Humanity.

Damn, that's sure a rare thing.

When you are given a chance to save a life, how far are you willing to go to prevent death? For Obstacles, Alcott is given a rare opportunity to save the life of a patient, and he takes it willingly.

This fantasy story is interesting as well as exciting. It also shows that there are people who are always choosing to do something good and kind.

Review originally posted on my blog: http://adayinbookland.blogspot.com.es...

Obstacles follows Alcott, an African American doctor who is taking care of a little kid called Gari who suffers from terminal cancer. One day a patient shows Alcott a book about bringing back the dead and so he goes to a beach and chants one of the spells. A woman materializes and tells him there is a way to keep Gari alive; he has to overcome some challenges known as the Obstacles, where he would have to prove himself, in order to keep the boy alive. But there is, of course, a catch: to keep the boy alive, Alcott would have to give up his own life. While I liked the book, I also had some problems with it; character-wise mostly.

The plot is what caught my attention; it was original and well-thought. Also, it deals with quite a heavy topic: death. Death is something inevitable and we all will come to dust at the end (was that goo gloomy? I’m sorry) but, deep within, Obstacles is more than just accepting death; it’s about overcoming our fears as well. The writing style was simple yet it allows the reader to fully imagine what is going on and I could picture everything in my head without a problem which always helps when trying to follow a story.

Another aspect I highly enjoyed about this book was the obstacles themselves. They were interesting and I had such a fun time reading how the characters faced their fears. And, yes, I’m talking characters in plural because once Alcott accepts taking part in the challenges other contestants join in as well. But, don’t let that fool you; it’s not about competing against each other but about joining together to help each other out which I thought was another great element of the whole story.

However, as I mentioned before, I had some problems, especially regarding our main character Alcott. He is a thirty-something-year-old man and a doctor in that and yes, I do get he’s been scared of death his whole life but sometimes I had a hard time believing he was in his 30s. His train of thought was a bit childish and he seemed like a teen boy rather than an adult. There is some character development though and he did grow, as well as the other characters, but he was so infantile at the beginning and now and then in the middle of the story that, like I said, I had troubles picturing him as an adult. I do believe if the book had been longer the character development would have been greater, but I’m happy with what I read in the end.

The conclusion was probably my favourite part of the novel; not only because it was so action-packed but because of how everything was tied together. The last chapter really made me smile because it genuinely made me happy and was somehow satisfying.

Book Review- Obstacles by Christopher Michael Reardon

Dr. Alcott is now a live-in doctor caring for a young boy named Gari. Dr. Alcott is prone to night terrors and fears death. One night when he goes to visit the hospital he has worked at in the past, he stops to talk to a well known patient named Mashilto. Mashilto is worried about young Gari and encourages Dr. Alcott to use the book Mashilto’s mother gave him. In it, he explains, is a way to raise the dead. The doctor is skeptical and agrees to take it and look at it. Once he has the book in his possession, he hears voices or he believes he is going insane. When his car is searched, the book is gone. Mashilto has no recollection of having a book like that. Dr. Alcott is shocked.
Gari’s latest visit is grave and he only has days left. After that terrible news is shared the book magically appears on Dr. Alcott’s bed. He panics in horror and fear. In the end he takes the book and completes the ritual. A Jauntla appears challenging him to give his own life for Gari’s life.
Once he agrees Dr. Alcott is a competitor in the obstacles. If he wins enough he earns the right to change fate. There are six total. Time is frozen until he wins at least three or loses four. He enters this adventure with four other people: Gretchen, Vitaly, Travis and Marya. Gretchen is trying to save her sister. Vitaly wants to save her father’s life. Travis is also trying to save his father’s life. No one knows why Marya is there. All they know is her story involves a drunk driver.
The obstacles are harrowing and dangerous. Alcott is thrust into his worst nightmares. If he fails Gari dies. If he succeeds he trades places with Gari and dies in his stead. It literally becomes the fight of his life.
The storyline for this book was very creative. I have never read anything remotely close. The idea of beating trials in order to save a loved one from death is interesting. As I read through the story I would ask myself what would I do in that situation.
However the main character Alcott seemed incredibly moody, or overly excited. His reactions to situations annoyed me. He came across as a very weak individual in the beginning. His confidence was extremely low which surprises me since he is a doctor. It takes a lot of drive and confidence to get to that point. So in my opinion there were a lot of conflicting details in the story that made for confusion in some places.
In others it felt like the author was trying too hard with his choice of words. The story didn’t flow as well as it should have. I can tell that the author is young. I give the story a 3 out of 5 for its creativity.

I think this was a great first novel for Chris Reardon. He is a talented author with a bright future ahead of him.

A young doctor has a nine-year-old patient who is dying and he’s frustrated that there is nothing he can do to save him. Then another patient steps into the picture and offers the doctor an ancient tome. Inside is a possible solution to saving the dying young boy. All he has to do is follow the directions and call a powerful god down for a favor, a god who has the ability to alter destiny. The catch, young doctor Alcott has to give up his life so the boy can live. But there’s a sub clause involved. He must pass three seemingly impossible obstacles in order to proceed. But Alcott isn’t the only one who must pass these obstacles. There are four others, each of whom wants to save the life of another person. They will work together and help one another in their quest to save another person’s life.

This is an action-packed story, the pace super-fast and the characters easy to become emotionally involved with. Though I wanted to score higher, I couldn’t justify more than three stars because I did struggle at times, especially in the very beginning, to believe Alcott was a real doctor. His word choices and actions didn’t always come across as realistic. As I read I kept seeing a mid-teen type in my mind. But I could feel the young doctor’s pain over the thought of losing his patient and understood why he took a chance and followed the directions found in the tome for calling down a god. Word choices were awkward at times, not fitting with what was being said, though on a positive note, was never bad enough to stop me from reading and enjoying the story. I think this author has a bright future ahead of him. I know I’ll definitely be watching for the next one to come along by Chris Reardon.

This imaginative journey began with a doctors exasperation at his inability to save the life of one of his patients, a child named Gari. Throw in an eccentric elderly patient who claims to be able to bring back the dead, and I was hooked. From the minute Dr. Alcott took the mystical book in his possession, Chris Reardon penned and interesting and gripping world that is everything a fantasy should be. We have real characters facing great odd in pursuit of a noble cause. It's the kind of story that can easily be read in an afternoon without even blinking. There are small mechanical issues with grammar and occasional poor word choice, but these are minor speed bumps on the road of an adventure you don't want to miss taking.

The author sent me a copy of the book for my honest review. It is a fantasy adventure suitable for all ages. I found it a little boring in spots but it is a good story. It is intriguing and keeps you guessing until the end of the book. Thanks Chris Reardon for the copy of the book.

Note: I was provided a copy of this book for review.

Obstacles is the kind of book that brings you the unexpected in an engaging and unique story. The complex magical realm of the obstacles and the rules and logic behind it are creative and unique and add a new element to the fantasy genre. The story follows Alcott, a live in doctor for the terminally ill Gari, who wishes he could save the young boy's life. When he is given a mysterious spell book with a promise that is will save Gari's life, Alcott pushes past his paranoia and his fear of death in order to try and save him.

There is a great realm of believability and realism through this story, and it is matched by a wonderful fantastical element. The premise of Reardon's story is not to create heroes out of ordinary people, but instead is shows ordinary people trying to achieve the impossible in order to save someone in a truly selfless act. Alcott and the others participating in the obstacles all have their own reasons for partaking and we slowly see these reasons emerge as the story progresses.

There is a great amount of action too and Reardon uses it well and balances the excitement and the fantastical well. The obstacles they all face show great imagination on Reardon's behalf; they are clever and entertaining and filled with uncertainties that keep you guessing. The anticipation the contestants feel also translates across the page meaning you also feel nervous for the outcome and are unsure what will happen.

Reardon's strengths are in his creativity and expression of these ideas and the design of the world as well as his ability to surprise without losing sense of the story. In saying this, there are a lot of things unexplored. There are a few mysteries that are easy to leave unanswered such as the origin and nature of the mysterious book, as well as some of the elements in the magical realm, but other areas were less mysterious and more flat.

There are multiple twists and surprises through this story so you are never quite sure what is going to happen but you are intrigued to find out. Reardon's writing is captivating and unique and Obstacles is a compelling story that shows how people are willing to go to extreme lengths to save the people they care about.

I got this book for free, I hate giving bad reviews to free books, but I cannot in good conscious allow this to continue to get flowery reviews that don't address its flaws. If i just gave it a good review because it was free i would be doing everyone involved a disservice.

This book leaves a lot to be desired. It wasn't horrible but it wasn't really good either. There are plenty of reviews which seem to repeat the blurb on the back so I'm going to skip that part. The author is young and i appreciate, that but Eragon this is not.

The characters are always feeling extremes of emotion, they are never just upset, or worried, they are always furious and terrified. The descriptions of minor scenes last chapters and important story driving concepts are rushed. This novel either needs to be flushed out more or brought down to the size of a short story for an anthology collection. The ending was contrived and lackluster, the build up was weak. This reads like a failed treatment for lost.

And i HATE HATE HATE saying this but i feel as though it must be said. There is almost no situation where an African american male would describe the sweat falling down into his eyes, as coming from his hair.

1. the cover art does not seem to depict the protagonist, which happens, because well book art is like that.

2. The physical description of the main character aside from being african american and a doctor is just lacking.

3. how many african american men have bangs for sweat to gather in and then fall into their eyes?

4. It is ridonkulous that winning his challenges wipes away Alcott's existence from earth as if he was never born, i'm actually disappointed that this paradox is in here like an after thought without ever being alluded to before then. We new he would die, but not that he would never exist in the first place.

I could go on and on with that flaws. I hope this author learns more about writing because he's got a passion for it, he's just not hit it here. I also hope he fires his editor.

Firstly I'd like to say how gorgeous the cover is for this book. I mean really? It's ridiculously beautiful, I love, love, love it!

Secondly, the plot for this novel is astounding and like nothing I've ever came across before. A doctor bonds with his child patient, and is given a book by a dying man that allegedly has the power to save a life. Using this book he summons a goddess, who promises that if he succeeds at dangerous obstacles, the child will live.

I'm amazed that this is a debut novel based on the plot, but I must admit that the writing style could use a little more work I truly believe that the more Reardon works at his craft the more amazing he will become. That said, I am not a writer, I struggle to even write reviews let alone a novel, and so my critique may be completely out of line.

The development of characters was very well done, they were all realistic and likeable, and the settings that they are placed in are mind blowing. My only complaint regarding the story was that it seemed to move slowly, but that may have been just my experience. We all know I don't read a lot of fantasy, and though I like it I'm still adapting to the genre.

Overall this book was enjoyable but could have been better. Fans of the fantasy genre have more potential to love it, but I would say perhaps stay away until you fully love the genre. I'd love to see this book get a film adaptation, because I think that'd be a huge and highly addictive film.

I rated this book 3 stars on Goodreads.

This book was given to me in exchange for a review. My opinions are in no way affected by the publisher or author.
