Okay, just to clarify: I’m a grown-ass woman. This is a book for middlegraders.

I. Was. TERRIFIED.

The funny thing is, that this book is very simply built. Action-reaction. A little depiction of emotions. The tiniest fraction of depiciton of environment and people. Any foreshadowing consequently happens through suggestion.

And yet I found myself picturing it all down to the tiniest detail, even the pattern on the wallpaper (which isn’t described in-story). And maybe that’s what made it so scary to me: It felt a little too much like home.

In this old, remote, forlorn and near abandoned fishing village somewhere in Northern-Norway, Adam, Mia and mom are visiting grandma’s house. Grandpa just died, and grandma is slowly losing her mind. Mom is not herself, uncle Halgrim is doing his best to cheer them all up, and Mia - something very strange is going on with Mia.

Adam hears her talking to someone, but no one’s there. And then grandma says «IT is back.» Is Adam going crazy? What the hell is going on in this godforsaken place?

The whole atmosphere swallows me right back up to when I was a kid, when my dad was still a fisherman and I sometimes came with him to the docks. When my grandmother used to tell me stories of past relatives that drowned at sea, or about mysterious phenomenons she’d heard about, from the island where my grandfather was born.

The world in this book is the world I came from. Which is probably why it came very damn near to freaking me out. In broad daylight.

I admire how seamlessly the story touches on things like grief, dementia and death, without pouring it on too heavily. And how the characters all come clearly through on the page, even without any lengthy descriptions. It’s incredibly well written.

Five stars. EASILY.

That was such an exciting read! Only took me a few hours as i raced through the pages. I'm not giving it 5 stars due to the fact that i thought "Draugen" would be central to the story, and i would have liked that, but after having read it i'm fine with how it played out. Draugen is a creature who warns of bad things that will happen, and it did, so their presence was enough for this story. However it does make me wanna read a book where "Draugen" is more central to the story! Same for other Norwegian folklore creatures.
It is marked as a children's book, but apart from some references i did not really think too much about it as it was very disturbing horror wise. So the fact the author wrote something that works for a lot of age groups is awesome as i often feel horror/fantasy books are targeted 12-15 in my country, and i miss having some that is targeted to a little older audience. Some things were a bit predictable, but other twists surprised me. Absolutely loved the atmosphere, and i always love when it's referring to creatures from folklore that you don't hear much of. I live on an island and you hear of Draugen, you fear it, but it's also a really cool creature being one of my faves from folklore. Might pick up a physical copy of this for my shelf as i'm not ruling out a future reread!

Excellently terrifying story and good writing. I love that author is not underestimating the readers which I sadly find quite common in children's and teen books. I was really excited to learn more about the folklore of the Draug, and was a bit disappointed when a simple description was crammed into a mere one sentence and not really addressed since. There were a few things I thought was a bit lazy and inconsistent, such as Noah not knowing who he was or what he wanted, yet Esther knew. And no explanation as to why the ghost of the father or the grandfather was not around. But, overall probably the best children's/teen book about folklore that I have read so far.

[Hardcover]

Much like Lamøy's previous book, this story has a high drive, lot's of cliffhangers and supernatural horrors. Well suited to keep 10+ years olds interested.

For me, an old lady, it is a bit too simple and action driven, but I see the appeal. For those who liked "Hjemsøkt", this is sure to be a good follow up.
