The Hookup Type

Rate this book
“You can’t have Fun Dip with a person you actually care about losing.”

Maci Lawson has a few goals for her junior year of college. She wants to excel in her courses, live it up with her roommate in their new apartment, and break away from her habit of relationships and keeping old options open. This year she’s looking for a hookup, and her new friend Jaxon might just check all her boxes—until he becomes someone she wants more with. When their friendship trumps taking that chance, Maci stumbles into a guy who’s the spitting image of everything Jaxon warned her about. Now Maci is caught between a guy she's fallen for and a guy who meets her hookup criteria. Unfortunately for her, they aren’t the same person.

Jaxon Hayes doesn’t do relationships or the morning after. Getting in with girls, keeping some around, and leaving no-strings-attached is his specialty, and he has no plans of changing that. So when he finds out his new friend Maci is looking for a hookup, he sees no reason why he can’t step into the role—until he spends two months in the friend zone and realizes that Maci is too important to risk losing. Stuck between wanting more and knowing he shouldn’t, Jaxon ends a scenario he’s all too familiar with. But when his choice to be the good guy results in someone else sleeping around with the first girl he’s ever cared about, he finds himself questioning everything.

One night was all it took for their lives to intertwine in ways neither of them expected. Eventually, both of them are faced with deciding what’s more important—going after the one you want or proving you’re the hookup type.

The Hookup Type stands alone as the first in a planned series.

This was a lot of fun. It brought me back to my college days.
It did remind me that I’m really glad I’m not 23 anymore!
This made me gasp in surprise, giggle with excitement, and smile a bunch!
I was invested from the start. Can’t wait to continue the series.

i honestly didn’t enjoy this book that much. while there was definitely potential and it had a fast paced writing style, there was no plot and the characters were very unlikable.

main characters:

overall maci was cool and i didn’t really have a problem with her, she was just dumb🤷🏽‍♀️ being in her pov sometimes annoyed me because she would contradict herself every chance she got.

as for jaxon (who for some reason i keep wanting to call jason??) was a complete and total asshole. just because he was sweet to maci and katie doesn’t make him any less of a dick😐. the way this man spoke about and treated women was gross. to make it simple, he gave off ‘written by a man’ vibes🤢

maci and jaxon’s friendship was okay, sometimes even a little sweet but overall meh. i don’t even consider what they had at the end a relationship because it was dumb and i couldn’t root for them after witnessing jaxon be an asshole for 90% of the book just to swoon over him in the end?? lol no. they both need to be single and work out their issues. (and let’s not forget how she says i love you and he never says it back before the book ends LMAO)

side characters & the relationships they had with the main characters:

i liked katie, she called maci on her shit every time and it was definitely needed so shout out to her. also her friendship with maci was just cute. as for her relationship with connor, she deserved it.

i did not like bryson. his whole little “hook up” bullshit with maci was unnecessary, boring, and made me dislike this book 10 times more. literally what was the point?? this book was basically just people hooking up with each other…

storyline & etc:

the amount of things that were just thrown in here was crazy. we had an odd mention of jaxons dad who wrote him a letter from prison (don’t ask me where that came from and don’t ask how it ended cause idk), another thrown in sentence about jaxon being treated poorly by a drug addict with no further explanation, maci’s brother who was mentioned in one sentence a chapter before came to stay with her after cheating on his bf, and we find out jaxon was adopted with… surprise! no explanation!!

there was also a major double standard between the men and women in this book. think of the men as andrew tate stan’s because it describes them perfectly!

i felt nothing but annoyance towards maci and jaxon. these characters were surface level and boring. the spice was mid, and all they did was party and hookup.

I loved that this book took place in town I went to college. The book followed typical BG students spending time at the bars and hooking up as there is not much else to do in the middle of cornfields lol

Oh my god I loved this book!! I don’t know what Brittany put in this but I devoured it! For real I couldn’t get enough of it and I felt like I was transported right back to my college days while reading it!
Something about this book felt nostalgic to me even though it was the first time I was reading it! It made it so enjoyable and I felt like I was reading a book about my friends!
The dual POV was great! I loved getting in the characters heads because this was a slowwwww burn! But I will say as someone who can get impatient with slow burns this was done sooo well!
I loved the character development, I loved the writing style and I loved the storyline as a whole! Everything was so relatable and realistic! Also this was a bit longer for a romance book but I didn’t mind bc I honestly didn’t want the story to end! I loved it!

A couple of qualms I had though:
- we get a teeny bit of info regarding stuff Jaxon in terms of his birth parents and his dad but it’s kind of a blip in the story and disappears - I wasn’t sure if more books are planned where this will unravel more?
- the ending for me did drag a bit just because so much of the slow burn felt like a back and forth with them being hot and cold I felt like the end having played it out too in the aftermath was a little draggy for me
- the way Jaxon and Bryson talked about women irked me - I do get where it was 100% part of their manwhore characters but it did give me the ick a bit - however I don’t find it unrealistic or overshadowing other parts by any means

Overall though I really loved this book and I would highly recommend it! I couldn’t put it down!

The Hookup Type is a perfect vacation or beach read, it entertained me for the entirety of a long flight. Wilson does a great job of crafting unapologetically, authentic characters. Set on the campus of Bowling Green State University, the vivid details of familiar haunts fully immerses the reader in a college setting. Katie and Maci's (best friends and roommates) relationship was one of my favorites, it made me nostalgic for the college years! I was invested in Maci and Jaxon's relationship, the tension between them is palpable. Great read, I highly recommend, can't wait for the next one!

There was in fact plenty of hookups in this book. Page after page of them actually. And blackout binge drinking. Probably pretty close to the party college scene. But over 400 pages of it and it started being redundant and annoying. It left me wanting a little more.

I’m not sure of the plot, or even if I like any character. But I do know the title is fitting. The MMC really needed knocked down a few pegs (and probably an std test) with the multiple mention of having nearly triple digits of hookups. Run away girls! I wanted there to be more of a plot and get some feeling of maybe closure at the end, but the end was like a cliffhanger. It just ended. That pissed me off rather than excited me for a sequel.

That being said, I do like how the author writes and I would read something else by her. Ultimately I just think I’m not the audience for her story, but someone in the early 20’s who like red flag college boys would enjoy more.

"Who needed caffeine when you had a half-naked Jaxon Hayes to hug you from behind? Fuck Folgers. I would take this every morning from here on out."
Any millennial who thrived in the mid-2010s must read this book. The music references from 2015/2016 alone are guaranteed to have you in your feels. But really, if one of your favorite shows was Greek, then this is totally the book for you (even though it's not centered on college greek life).
"It was hard not to get turned on when Maci challenged me. She never hesitated to call me out, which was something I wasn’t used to unless it was coming from one of the guys. Sure, broads had called me names, screamed in my face, and even threatened to run me over with their car. But when words left Maci’s mouth, they held a different meaning."
THIS. BOOK. IS. SO. FUN! I genuinely didn’t know what to expect since this was my first experience with Brittany, but I am so happy to have found her! There’s so much in this story that you’re guaranteed to fall in love with the characters she’s created for us. This book is college romance at its finest: small college town, bar crawls, celebrating minor holidays in big ways, drunken confessions, attending class & doing homework (yeah, y’all are at school after all), characters running on coffee & booze, going home after semester finals & spring break. Brittany really transports her readers to the stereotypical college world but offers us a fresh story with interesting characters.
"All the time I spent away from him made it clear how much I depended on him to show up for me. I needed him in a way that scared me and overwhelmed me with the fear of losing him."
There will be times when Jaxon & Maci will make you mad because they’re acting foolish, but stick with them, because they’re so lovable. Sometimes you might want to smack them upside their heads, but isn’t that the mark of a great story? When you are so invested you're literally sitting up & shaking your head in frustration because these fools can’t see what’s right in front of their faces? No? Just me? Well, I really liked this story.
"I wasn’t sure how to be anything other than a one-night-stand kind of guy. I had worked through so many girls that I had no idea what number I was even on. I didn’t even know if I could be loyal to just one person for an extended period of time. But I knew if there was one girl I would try it for, it was the one I had thought about every single day since she sat next to me in class."
Overall, this book is a fun time, will leave you unable to see Fun Dip the same way & you’ll be eager to see how the story continues in book 2 (this is a multi-arc series, so there isn’t a cliffhanger ending, but the story isn’t complete… yet). (And do yourself a favor & read Brittany’s acknowledgements at the end of the book because you’ll get an idea about her plan for this series... and you’ll love her even more.)

This book made me miss my younger college years! I think the reason I connected with this book is because I was a lot like Maci, and I went for guys like Jaxson over and over when I was in my early twenties. Ah party nostalgia!

Maci is sick of relationships and just want to hook up. She meets Jaxson and they have instant friendship chemistry. Jaxson is the ultimate F boy who doesn't do the morning after. When they finally have the opportunity to hook up, it's Jaxson that calls it off, realizing he doesn't want to lose Maci and their friendship.

Determined to find someone to have fun with, Maci meets an even BIGGER F boy, who just happens to be Jaxson's best friend (she didn't learn this until it was too late). So now Jaxon has to watch as his best friend Bryson is getting the hook up with the girl he really likes, and he's kicking himself in the butt for not being with her when he had the chance.

Jaxson is terribly unlikable in the beginning, and this is by design! He had to be written as cringy as possible so he could redeem himself in the end. I know there are people who DNF'd the book because of how much they disliked him, but please give him a shot. I think the fact that so many people found him so terrible, myself included, is a testament to the author's writing.

I think this book is geared toward an early 20's college audience. There are a lot of pop culture references and a lot of language that I hear my teenager and his friends using that I don't connect with being a nearly 40 year old mom. For me it didn't take away from my enjoyment of the book, but I can see how it might for older readers who don't connect or who feel like these characters should be hanging out with their children. The language used by Jaxon, Bryson, and other male characters in reference to women can definitely be offensive to some, which again tells me this book is targeted for an audience younger than myself.

There were a few loose ends that didn't get answers, especially about Jaxon's family situation. In the authors note at the end it says there will be two more books in this series, so I'm going to assume those answers will be important for more character development and drama in later books. It certainly has the potential to provide lots of juicy drama for Maci and Jaxon to wade through together!

Overall I did really enjoy this book. It made me fondly reminiscent of my early 20's when this is very similar to how I lived and partied (and dated, ugh!). So if stories about the college party scene and the drama that comes with it are your thing, I would recommend this book. I will be reading the next book when it comes out. I have to know where Maci and Jaxon go from here!

Diving into Brittany Wilson's The Hookup Type is like getting an all-access pass to the roller coaster ride of young love, complete with all its thrilling highs and heart dropping lows. This book is a delightful concoction of fun, sass, sensuality and sweetness - all masterfully blended to capture the essence of a timeless coming-of-age story.

This book isn't just a story, it's an experience, one that reminds us of the butterflies and bittersweetness that define that first journey into adult love. Brittany has a knack for creating characters that are as real as they are relatable. Maci and Jax aren't just figures in a story; they are friends we root for, cry with, and ultimately fall in love with. The story is propelled by the character development of both the protagonists and the side characters; each turn of the page revealing the complexities and growth that come with navigating the tricky waters of love, communication, and self-discovery. The dialogue sparkles with wit and authenticity, making you laugh out loud one moment and tugging at your heart strings the next.

The heart of "The Hookup Type" lies in its celebration of that time in life when everything feels intensely magnified - the first time falling truly falling in love, the fear of being vulnerable with friends and lovers, and the realization that both are more complicated and beautiful than we ever imagined. Brittany is able to adeptly capture these experiences with a keen eye for detail and an open heart, inviting readers to reflect and revel in their own firsts.

What makes this book a must-read, however, is Brittany's ability to weave a compelling narrative that's as insightful as it is entertaining. The coming-of-age theme is explored not just as a backdrop for romance, but as a pivotal stage of life where we find out who we are and what we want. The Hookup Type celebrates the messiness, the mistakes and the milestones that define us during these formative years.

This was a five-star read for me - it left me nostalgic, heart warmed, and hopeful about the power and possibility of love, in a time where that's not always easy to find. This book is a tender reminder of just how special, how challenging, and how transformative these moments can be. Truly a masterclass in how to combine both a coming-of-age drama and a spicy, sexy romance into one beautiful story.

This book was so much fun! It follows Maci and Jaxon (dual POV) as they start their junior year in college, and they both have one thing in mind; strictly hookups, no strings attached types of relationships. Maci isn't used to this and wants to prove to herself that she can in fact have something fun and playful, while Jaxon is a hookup ONLY type of guy - he doesn't do the morning after. They meet in a cute way at a Dairy Queen, find out they have a class together, become friends, and then one night, they finally decide to take things to the next step (because seriously, they've been eye f'ing each other the entire time and clearly want to tear each other's clothes off) but surprise! Jaxon says no! (audible gasp) He believes Maci isn't the hookup type of girl, that she loves the morning after, and honestly she deserves something better than just hooking up; so he tells her they should just be friends and never cross that line. Well, Maci (intent on sticking to her guns about having a fun fling this year) starts hooking up with Jaxon's hunky friend - and another surprise! Jaxon is not happy about it. (I mean, clearly he has feelings for her) The story continues with the two of them pining for each other, but both afraid to speak up. There is SPICY SPICE, there's longing, there's banter, there's fun songs and club scenes, there's a very powerful friendship between Maci and Katie which I absolutely adored, and it's a really fun story about dating in college, having the time of your life with your friends, and possibly finding something in a surprise someone that you never saw coming. It was an easy read, and I was living vicariously through the characters since I've never been to college, so I ate it allll up :) Brittany is a clever writer, she knows how to pull you in and keep you wanting more, and I can't wait for the next chapter in Maci and Jaxon's lives. (and possibly a spin off for Katie? Maybe? Please!)

Ay Ziggy Zoomba!!

From the massive Blizzards at Myles DQ to the Fishbowl Races at Nate & Wally’s… From Legal Joint’s at Brathaus to so many orders of Pollyeyes, this book had me laughing and missing my days in BG.

The characters were people I wanted to spend time with… heck, they’re people I have spent time with… just incredibly relatable across the board. I read a ton of negative reviews of the MMC, and I ask myself… “Did these readers ever spend time with college boys?!” They can be real jerks. Like, downright nasty humans… and yet, often times it’s a front for who they really are… and those years can be painful… and there’s a ton of growth. I’m a big Jaxon fan… the man chased her down the stairs at Junction (Nope, can’t call it The Attic, it will always be Junction!) for a girl. Do y’all know how treacherous that can be?!

I can’t in good conscience give it a 5⭐️ because there were some cringy spots… and a few dropped plot lines.

Jaxon’s family dynamic wasn’t fully flushed out… but, I really want to know more about the characters that were introduced. I’m giving the benefit of the doubt in thinking there will be a sequel to finish that out. Admittedly, I prefer one couples story per novel but no one asked me.

These characters are ones I’m definitely looking forward to revisiting.

Reading this book felt like a nostalgic trip back to my college days, especially since it reminded me of drunken nights out and binge-watching One Tree Hill with my roommates in 2015. The setting and overall vibe took me straight back to my time at BGSU, and I could picture every single moment. BGSU really is a magical place, and this book captured that feeling well.

There were a few things that I didn’t love about this book. Maybe it’s 32-year-old me talking, but the way Jaxon and his roommate kept using the word “broad” felt outdated and was very off-putting. I knew college guys that were total assholes, but I don’t know anyone our age who actually uses that word to describe a woman. It made me cringe each time.

The book also felt a little too long. The tension between Maci and Jaxon dragged on, and I was practically begging for them to just tell each other how they felt. And don’t get me started on Maci staying with Bryson for way too long. I was frustrated for her, but so relieved when she finally ended her fun dip time with him.

Despite those issues, I really enjoyed the story. For a debut, self-published book, it was well written and pulled me in. It wasn’t perfect, but it was a fun, nostalgic read that made me miss my college days.

This book was such a pleasant surprise! I absolutely loved the FMC Maci. From the very beginning I enjoyed her confidence and no nonsense attitude. As the story went on and she decided to hook up with Bryson, you could really feel her confidence and self worth start to depend on how he treated her. I honestly really hated him but could completely relate to why Maci had such a hard time ending their hook up relationship. I think Wilson did an amazing job writing exactly how it feels to be a 21 year old in college trying to figure out who you are and what you want in life.

I have a love/hate relationship with Jaxon. Most of the time he was the fun bad boy with a soft side for those he cares about. But other times he was a total douche. I found myself getting so sick of him continuing to sleep with other women when he had feelings for Maci. I’m glad by the end of it they worked out most of their issues and were giving their relationship a real chance. I was happy to see that the author plans on writing more books about them because the ending definitely left me wanting more!

Overall this was a fun quick read! What a great debut by Brittany Wilson! Can’t wait to read the next book.

Thank you to the author for sending me an ARC to review!

I struggled to connect with The Hookup Type, primarily due to the lack of depth in character development. The story follows college students Maci Lawson and Jaxon Hayes. Maci, eager to break away from her usual dating patterns, decides to explore no-strings-attached hookups. Meanwhile, Jaxon, the stereotypical "player," hesitates to engage in a casual fling with Maci for fear of jeopardizing their friendship.

As the story unfolds, Maci ends up hooking up with Jaxon’s roommate, Bryson, while attempting to maintain a friendship with Jaxon. The way the relationships play out feels confusing, particularly when Jaxon tells Bryson that he and Maci do not know each other, making their continued friendship secret. Additionally, Maci repeatedly insists that she doesn’t want a relationship with Bryson—only honesty about whether he’s seeing other girls—yet her reactions contradict this stance.

While the book has potential, its heavy focus on the tangled relationship dynamics ultimately weakens character development, making it difficult for readers to connect with the characters.

Firstly, I just want to say that I Love this author... I think she is amazing and has great things coming for her.
The Hookup Type...
As it says that's what the book is all about. If the author was going for highlighting everything that is wrong with dating culture today.. she ABSOLUTELY nailed it.
I strongly disliked both main male characters in this book and wanted the FMC to run for the hills. I wished she would have known her self-worth enough to know that she deserved better. I was rooting for Jaxon until the part where he was comparing how the sex was with his best friend who also slept with her, then I just thought he was a spineless idiot for not standing up for her and sitting around the whole time his best friend slept with her.
The writing is strong and the story is easy to follow. If you are looking for a book that perfectly describes college culture and dating in today's world then this book is 100% for you!

I felt the everyday college life in this story lol

I have never been to college, but in this story, I felt like I was there. This honestly takes you almost on a day-to-day of a girl named Maci and her wanting to experience a hook up for her junior year of college.

You experience her relationship with her best friend/roommate, and the connection that they have. You experience college/party life. Experience the guys perspective with not wanting to be tied down and are true hook up types.

I had fun with it, it was a long and slow burn and although I love that the MC don’t insta love and actually have a friendship, some may find it too long. Like I said, I had fun with it and there were actual day to day college life problems. It didn’t end on a cliffhanger but it’s not the end of the series.

This book was okay. But there are things I really wish were different which would have made it really great. I loved Jaxson and Maci together and their banter. I felt like Macis character was very underdeveloped. I didn’t feel like I knew anything about her family or why she was even at college. I love books where I get attached to the characters and for the FMC to be so forgettable was disappointing. Honestly I was more attached to Connor and Katie’s relationship then the main characters of the book. The whole back and forth with Macis hookup/jaxsons roommate was annoying. Idk I just wish the book had more main character development and that Jaxson didn’t treat women the way he did. It felt like the author just wanted to share about her college town.

This book was absolutely amazing. It took me a while to actually finish, because while balancing high school, college, and work, it was difficult to find time to sit down and read. The Hookup Type was such a fun read, especially because I live in Ohio, I know of a lot of the places in the book, and I know Brittany. The storyline is great, and I was always on the edge of my seat while reading. I cannot WAIT to read the rest of the series, and I’m so proud of Brittany for writing and publishing her own book. I’ve always wanted to be a writer, but I never thought it would be something I could actually achieve. Brittany showed me that it’s possible, and if you truly have a passion for writing that it’s all worth it. 11/10 for The Hookup Type!

I really enjoyed this book! I thought it was a fun, adventures read. It brought me back to my college days and trying to figure the dating scene after a horrible relationship.

I thought the characters were related and human. I totally get what the author was going for when she wrote Jaxon and Bryson--the whole man whore trope. Totally relevant in today's dating culture if you ask me lol.

I loved Maci and her best friend's friendship! I loved that her best friend would call her out on her shit. Maci was funny and at times, I found myself like girrrll get it together.

Overall, I recommend this book if you're looking for a fast, fun read!! I read it after a few dark romance books and definitely was the palate cleanse I needed 🌟💜

okay pause first of all why did this book on a cliff hanger?? like we went through ALL that just for the cliff hanger to happen. this book was okay, there were certain parts that i really really loved that bumped it to a 3 star. but.. it pissed me off a lot and it was way too long honestly. there was almost zero communication until the last like 15 pages and it was frustrating for me. i really don’t know how i feel about Jaxon to be honest, there’s certain aspects i really hate but that’s the same with Maci too. they both had such a good connection they just struggled to really believe and see it it felt like. overall an okay book, not the best not the worst but i don’t know i’d push for others to read it

This book was a very fun and enjoyable read!
It was very easy to get into this book and soon become invested in Maci and Jaxon’s story. I loved how their story naturally progressed and that it wasn’t “insta love,” because it felt so much more realistic! Not a huge fan of Jaxon at first because he had the typical “frat boy” kind of antics but I really warmed up to him!
The college environment was a perfect setting and I personally think both characters, (dual POV) were well written as to what a 20/21 year old’s mindset is at during that time of your life.

It was a great, quick read and I cannot wait to read the next book from Wilson!

Thank you for the ARC. ❤️

I really enjoyed this book! I was in a bit of a slump but this book was fun and easy to pick up. It had an easy and quick writing style, with some wit and humor. I found myself wanting to shake Maci throughout the book and just yell at her that she deserves more. I ADORED Katie and the way she was such a genuine and true friend! She was always there to support Maci but would also call her out (respectfully of course). I found myself in a love hate relationship with Jaxon’s character. He was the epitome of a college frat douchebag, but then the side of him that would come out with Maci and Katie was so different and kind.

I loved this book! I definitely went into it thinking “no way a romance book can keep me hooked for 468 pages,” but it sure proved me wrong. It was a really fun read that took me back to college :) I think my only problems with the book stemmed from the dialogue surrounding women. I know that’s how a lot of men do talk realistically, and how they treat women. However, I had a hard time rooting for the main character even after he turned himself around because of the way he spoke about other women. It felt a little “pick me” at times because of it. I still loved the book though and would highly recommend!
