who has been ordered to train her

6 MF STARS! 🌟
Spice: 🫑
Fantasy romance readers, I'm disappointed in you. How, HOW has this not gained more attention and popularity!? It apparently came out in 2023 and I literally only JUST heard about it this month (thank you Janessa on ⏰ for posting about this). As of finishing the book and writing this review, there are less than 160 reviews TOTAL. What a friggin crime.

If you're a slow burn girlie, this book IS FOR YOU! You're following two different FMC's, though I would say one is more prominent. It's high fantasy with a little urban fantasy mixed in one of the POV's.

Captive of the Wild Hunt had it all for me:

🌸TWO amazing MMC's characters
🌸 WINGED WOLVES
🌸 Shifters
🌸 Interesting lore and magic
🌸 SLOW BURN (can I yell it any louder?)
🌸 Plot forward
🌸 He braids her hair (omg swoon)

In my post reading haze, I'm likely forgetting more, but I can say this with my full chest: This is easily one of my favorite books I've read this year. I can't think of a single aspect of this book I didn't like.

I love that A. A. Gordon also included a glossary and pronunciation guide, so helpful.

Seriously guys, PLEASE jump on this ASAP. This has given me hope for the future of this genre.

Slow Burn - 0 🌶

♡ Immersive Fantasy World
♡ Enemies to Lovers (?)
♡ Powerful FMCs
♡ Wild Hunt lore
♡ Found Family
♡ Portal Fantasy

It has been a long time since I have been so incredibly immersed in a fantasy world. This gave me all the feelings I had when I first rekindled my love of reading after going so long without it.

This book is for the true lover of fantasy with just enough romance and angst strung throughout to keep you eagerly hoping for more. It has all the whimsical magic, rich lore, vastly entwined world building, and an array of compelling and inspirational characters that are, at the same time, relatable and easy to connect with.

Ornella is fierce and guarded, finding herself in a precarious situation when she puts her own life on the line to protect those she cares about. My heart ached for the pain that she carries with her and the healing that she slowly starts to accept. The grumpy, sexy rider in charge of her doesn't hurt either.

Simultaneously, Amira's story that led to Ornella's predicament provided an excellent setup for what Gordon has in store for us in book 2.

I am utterly captivated by this story, and I honestly don't know how I am going to go on without the sequel for so long. In my opinion, this book rivals a certain fantasy romance multiverse by a popular female author, and I can not wait to see where these characters take us.

This was such a wonderful, refreshing, and well written book! Huge thank you to the author A.A. Gordon and Runefire Publications for providing me with an ARC!

Keeping this as spoiler-free as possible. The plot, the characters and the magic system were all done so well. I have always found dryads to be so freakin' cool so I really appreciated that inclusion. I especially enjoyed the multi POVs, each of which I found to be just as compelling. The setting was so autumnal and cozy even in moments outside the autumn court. Whether it was Ornella reluctantly coming to terms with her capture by the wild hunt, Sage's inner thoughts about the whole ordeal and the looming crises of their realm or Amira and her journey with quite the surprising companion - I loved all of it! The pacing was great, I didn't feel like the story dragged at any point. Loved the found family aspect especially given that the two FMCs had both mostly been solitary creatures in the past. There was great tension, banter, and all the emotions!

The ending (and epilogue especially!!!) had me SO intrigued about where the next book will take us!

This story! This story was just so good! I fell in love with the characters, especially Ornella and Sage. I fell in love with the world and its unique magic system. A.A Gordon wrote Ornella in such a way that even though she comes off selfish and arrogant and even flippant at times, you know that isn't who she is, that it's an armor to protect herself. Her relationship with Sage and how in unfolds was amazing to read. It was filled with tension, growth(for both characters), and healing.

The way the magic system works and how the world's and realms are interconnected was super well thought out! I never felt as if it didn't make sense. The plot flows naturally while following two different story lines that merge together at the end. That ending?! I was suddenly on the last page expecting the story to keep going. A very good start to what will definitely be a new fave series!

A absolutely loved this book like omg!!!

I was so engaged in this story despite the book being a brick. The world building was amazing and even though Fae have been done a lot, there was a lot of unique elements. I also loved the magic and I can’t wait to learn more about it.

I love Ornella so much. She is so confident, strong and stubborn but she also had a front up due to her own trauma. Throughout the book she opens up and starts to soften and it’s so lovely.

I adored Sage and I need him biblically. He is so noble but kind of cold in the beginning but he also starts to open up throughout the book. He is so caring and sweet.

Ornella and Sage are a true slow burn which I appreciated so much because the term slow burn is chucked around a lot. They have amazing banter and chemistry from the beginning and seeing them slowly start to like each other and become friends was amazing. What I also loved was how they both cared for each other, especially when Sage started to break through Ornella’s walls and truly saw her for the kind women she was. I cannot wait to see their development in the next book.

I also loved Amira she was shy and sweet from the beginning while once again having trauma of her own that is still affecting her. She is also a powerful witch which was badass!

I also really like Riordan and I loved how protective and sweet he was to Amira.

Their feeling’s definitely developed quicker but I still really liked their relationship and now that Orion was introduced I’m even more interested.

I also loved the side characters in this book and the found family element.

I can’t wait to read the next one!

4 stars for Captive of the Wild Hunt! This book is a solid intro into what feels like a complex world. We are introduced to 3 current MCs, Amira, Orella and Sage

What to expect:
✨Multi POV
✨Friends first (for 1 couple)
✨Mates
✨Hidden Identities
✨Mystery
✨Political Intrigue
✨1 'horse' trope
✨Slow Burn

What I liked:
✅There seems to be a lot of depth and mystery behind this world and the characters. We learn a lot through Amira who hasn't been to the Vale before. I love discovering the world and so far this one seems to have some unique qualities!
✅We finally get some slow burn for one of our couples and I love it! Truly by the end of this book they are just friends but know about this pull between each other and why they have it. ✅This type of 'bond' can be used in different ways, but we can all see how this is going to end. ;)
✅I really like Ornella's character. You know she has been through a lot but much of her identity remains hidden throughout this book. By the end we have one revelation (which I totally saw coming) but she is still so much a mystery. I can't wait for her in book 2.

What I didn't like:
🆗I'll be honest, I don't really love Amira's and Riordan's relationship. It feels a bit insta-love to me and we don't really get to develop both sides of the relationship. It just feels like it's here and there was no tension or build up to it.
🆗While this is a complex world and we have a lot to learn I also felt like some parts could be explained a bit better. This could be the point?

I'm very lucky to have been an ARC reader for this & am truly spoilt that this be the book that introduces me to this wonderful author!

That forehead kiss... that one [iykyk]. It broke me. Released tears that had been brimming when I started learning about Summer's past.

If you're looking for a book that you can't put down, that will have you reading until 4am & waking up at 7 am wanting more, this is it.

Strong female characters, curvy in stature, strong-willed & stubborn. Filled with passion, anger, hatred & skill. This has it all. Equally strong male characters that show their vulnerability along with their brute strength.

While it took me a few chapters to fully immerse myself into the glorious world the A. A. Gordon has built, I'm eagerly awaiting the next book and am saddened that I have a whole year to wait but I'm excited at the thought of getting to read this book once again before starting on book 2!

I saw a lot of reviews mention Ornella is initially an unlikeable character, and I might just be an unlikeable person because I had zero issues with her from the beginning. All the stars are for her.

Amira, on the other hand, irritates me. She gives off such strong special snowflake vibes and the not-like-other- witches is so heavy-handed. There's so much on paper telling about her that is supposed to convince the reader that she's amazing and perfect and everyone she meets melts because of her personality but her pov is really self-absorbed and whiny. I ended up skimming most of her chapters because she bored me and I'm worried I won't like book 2 if she's more prominent in it.

Goodreads Review – ★★★★
“Captive of the Wild Hunt” by A.A. Gordon – a beautifully raw, emotionally resonant journey that completely captured my heart.

This book surprised me in the best way. I picked it up expecting dark fae intrigue and a gritty fantasy setting but what I got was so much more. Captive of the Wild Hunt is a story about survival, vulnerability, and what it truly means to be seen by another person. It’s full of magic, danger, and aching tenderness that builds quietly between every line.

Ornella and Sage’s relationship is the heart of this story and it’s stunning. Their connection doesn’t come easy. They both carry so much pain, so many walls, but watching them slowly learn to trust, to open up, and to see each other for who they truly are… it was deeply moving. Their growth felt honest and earned, never rushed, and the emotional payoff was powerful.

Ornella is fierce, complex, and full of quiet strength. Her resilience in the face of everything she’s endured is inspiring. She isn’t perfect, she’s angry, scared, guarded but she never stops fighting. Watching her come into her own, not just as a survivor, but as someone who learns to choose connection again, was incredibly powerful.

And Sage… his journey hit me in a different way. He’s cold, closed off, hardened by his past but there’s such a deep yearning underneath it all. His slow shift from untouchable and distant to protective and quietly loyal was heartbreaking and beautiful to witness. There’s a softness to him that feels so rare in this kind of story, and it made every moment between him and Ornella feel genuine and earned.

And of course, I can’t forget the vargar, the giant, powerful, magical beasts they ride. They’re more than just fantasy creatures., they reflect the wild, untamed bond between the characters and their pasts. Their presence added an emotional and primal depth to the world that I absolutely loved.

Final thoughts:
This book is so much more than a fantasy romance. It’s about healing. It’s about finding trust when you’ve forgotten what it feels like. It’s about two people who have every reason to keep their walls up and instead, choose to try. I loved it for its intensity, its quiet emotional moments, and its refusal to rush anything that deserved time.

5 stars, a bond I’ll never forget, and a story that will stay with me long after the last page. 🖤🐺

“I am going to protect you, Summer. Not only because we are anam but because becoming a rider was your right the moment that you killed Aodhan”

Ornella, the Summer dryad, was determined to protect her King from the Autumn Prince. But she never expected what was to come when she killed Aodhan, a Wild Hunt rider.

Now she’s captive with Sage, a gorgeous rider with violet eyes to train her to be one of them, a Wild Hunt rider!

Will she be able to trust the enemy or will they betray her and destroy her homeland? Find out September 23, 2023.

The moment I read the blurb and the cover art I was in love with the novel. This novel left me wanting more and couldn’t put it down!

I enjoyed the characters and the world-building. As a Canadian, I enjoyed that the story took place in Ontario, Canada and love finding and supporting Canadian Authors.

The Epilogue revealed some unanswered questions that I had that I was glad to figure out and look forward to what’s to come!

6,7,8 stars it’s amazing. 11/10. Infinite rating. This is the best book of the year for me.
I heard it was the next throne of glass and it reads like it.
I am amazed and absolutely obsessed.
I want to live in this fantasy.
Is this a dream? …my dream fantasy finally exists and I can’t get enough.

Thank you A.A GORDON. Please give me more.

The writing, the univers, the characters are so well done.
Every character has a way of speaking and I love it. It really shows their personality. I love how fierce are the FMCs and how adult they are. The MMC are 🤌🏻.
No spice, which is perfect for the first book. I cannot wait for more.

The slow burn is slowburning and I can’t get enough. I’m obsessed.

It didn't take me very long to get sucked into the book. I did read an arc so I don't want to comment about awkward paragraphs or punctuation as they may be changed/edited.
There are 3 different stories apparently going on in the book. At first I didn't care too much for Amiras chapters but then I ended up loving her just as much. Ornella was also super whiney at the beginning but became less so as the book went on.

Will definitely be recommending this book to my friends and other bookies when it comes out.
(Was also a jumpscare reading about Guelph and other cities that are only 30 mins away from me. A pleasant surprise!)

Should you read the Captive of the Wild Hunt by A. A. Gordon? If you love high fantasy, Celtic mythology, folklore, multiple POVs, and beautifully crafted world-building and characters, you will devour this book! I truly mean that; you will start reading Captive of the Wild Hunt and won't let go.

I found myself so immersed in this world of magical beings and intricate relationships combined with stories of pain, loss, rage, and love. I was mesmerized by it all.

We follow several POVs in this book, going between Ornella, a summer dryad; Amira, a mortal witch; Sage, a fey warrior; and others intimately interwoven into these characters' arcs.

Ornella's story is the one I love the most; her strength, resilience, and, ultimately, openness to emotions of friendship and maybe something more are a testament to her character. Even though she has gone through some horrible experiences, being a member of a patriarchal dryad society, she has slowly started to heal and maybe even find her true place in this world. The only question is—will that place be with her friend Amira and the king of the Vale, or will it be with Sage and the Wild Hunt?

Ornella's path is irrevocably changed the day she decides to protect her king and outs herself in front of the notorious warriors of the Wild Hunt, feys from the Autumn Court. When her life is threatened, and she kills one of the warriors, another dryad, her existence becomes tied to the Wild Hunt, making her a new member. Now, she finds herself in an unknown place, surrounded by strangers who think her no more than a spy. While those may be her motives at first, once she gets to know this new world and its inhabitants, mainly Sage's family, her most inner beliefs are shaken.

Her and Sage's story is beautiful to read; it is a true enemies-to-lovers story without them becoming lovers yet. The concept of "anam" instead of fated mates offers something new, and I loved how Gordon incorporated it into the story.

On the other hand, Amira's path is slightly different. Living as an outcast witch, one day, she saves a griffin, a mythical being thought to be extinct. That day, her world is changed. Her path is intertwined with Ornella, and I loved reading about their blossoming friendship. Once they learn that the griffin is actually the cursed king of the Vale, and Amira helps break the curse, a new love will slowly emerge. A love forged from a timid friendship between an ostracized witch and a griffin to a mortal witch and the king of Vale, a griffin shifter.

Captive of the Wild Hunt will gift you
- intricate world-building
- high fantasy with Celtic folklore & mythology
- multiple POVs
- strong female characters
- true enemies-to-lovers
- slow-burn
- sacred bonds
- found family
-quest for survival
- the Wild Hunt,
and so much more!

📖 Title: Captive of the Wild Hunt
✍️ Author: A.A. Gordon

💭 My Thoughts:
I can’t wait to recommend this book to all my friends! I am a sucker for a unique fantasy world and characters with a lot of depth - A.A. Gordon does a fantastic job at both. I loved following the two separate stories - Amira and Riordan and Ornella and Sage, it made sense why we were following both stories and I loved seeing how the story unfolded into each others timeline. I absolutely loved Ornella and Amira. Ornella is strong, whitty and stubborn. She has a hard exterior, but you see these moments where she genuinely cares and does what she has to to protect those around her. It was beautiful getting to know her past and seeing how she began to evolve as the story progressed. Sage compliments her so well. He is a top tier MMC in my opinion. He has a strong moral compass and always treated Amira with dignity even when they were “enemies”. I also love a man who is sweet with his mama! Their story is a major slow burn, like the story ended and still nothing happened but that just makes me all the more eager to pick up book two. Where Ornella is all tough exterior and sass, Amira is gentle and sweet. I really love her character, how she doesn’t lose site of her kindness even as she has to deal with some tough situations. And Riordan is such a stinkin cutie with her!! There is so much happening on the plot side with the two worlds being on the verge of war and the Fuakes? (Can’t remember how that’s spelled but not a fan of those awful creatures). The story ends with not a lot resolved on the plot side of things, so I’m eager to pick up book two to see what happens next for our lovely characters. Also Asha and Carrick are just my all time favorite characters

🔥 Favorite Quote:
"For whatever it is worth Summer, you are welcome to my family if you want them”

📝 Tropes:
- Enemies to Lovers
-Slow burn
- Powerful FMC
-Fae fantasy with griffins, witches, vampires & dragons

Another Goodreads recommendation that it's a hit. I inhaled this book and I'm in the second one already. I was never a big fan of elves, the courts even after giving it a few tries. But this, Ioved. I enjoyed both heroines, though Ornella is my fave. There are so many great different characters, all flawed and full of life and scars. I'm a sucker for romance when it's well done. And here we get a double dose. I thought it was a duology but now I know it will be 4 books and the wait will be hard but worth it 😭

This is criminally underrated! This was such a good read. I was so interested in both POVs of the FMCs and the magic systems are really fascinating and different along with the political systems/royalty. The characters are well written and *slow clap* for Sage for the gentle, well raised male he is! I actually really liked how both MMCs were written. I really enjoyed this and had trouble putting it down.

Fae and witches and shifters and the Wild Hunt... Oh My!

This book was everything I'd hoped for and more!

When I initially received my copy of the book, I'd had no idea that it contained 2 separate storylines that are interwoven with each other. Both Nell and Amira's stories are fantastic, though Amira's moves a bit faster than Nell's does. But don't you dare think that means that Nell's is less interesting, because it isn't, at all.

I'm a sucker for enemies to lovers, even when it's a super slow burn. I can't wait for the second book to come out next year!

captive of the wild hunt was such an interesting story! It was so fun having multiple FMcs within the book! And how their individual stories eventually merged into one! I really enjoyed the multiple POVs. I kept jumping back and forth between who my fave character was! Plus The magic system was so unique and interesting! Such a fun book and had me so excited I had the second one to jump right into!

I love when authors own their world and exploit it as much as they can - when writing about Fae and referring to traditional lore and literary traditions, you can easily fall into the trap of stereotypical characters and unoriginal plotlines. In Captive of the Wild Hunt, the author has managed to weave a story with rich world building, and my favourite: great character building too (which is not always a given). By taking the time to describe the cultural background and origins of each character, you immediately get a feel of who they are deep down, and that makes it much easier to relate and actually care about what happens to them. Among the rich descriptions and attention to detail - like the languages the characters speak in to understand each other, which is so often glossed over in fantasy literature - you could tell the Irish and Gaelic folklore and legends were predominant in the author's research. I was a tad surprised when one of the characters is said to be of Greek descent, though - did I miss something? It felt a little out of place.

The story itself was fine, and I want to believe the first book was mostly exposition and taking the time to know everyone, because there were definitely some ebbs and flows. I only became truly captivated by the plotline in the third part. I enjoyed the rest but did not feel compelled to read on every time I picked up the book. I had 3 stars in mind most of the time I was reading, then went up to 3.5 (rounded up to 4) by the end of the book.
The dual timelines work really well, and I like that we had more than one main character, which alludes to a bigger plot and potentially more characters and information on the world they live in.

Huge kudos for the mature, intelligent relationships. The level of respect between most characters (those that are supposed to care for each other anyway) is a major plus, the dialogues do not read like an afterthought, and I loved Sage the most for those reasons - so many green flags! Is it detrimental to the romantic tension? I am not entirely sure, but I sure thought it was refreshing.

OMG I loved this book! I was lucky enough to be selected as an ARC reader for the second book, The Bane of the Wild Hunt, and was also given this book to read, so of course I read them both. I cannot begin to explain how much I enjoyed reading this! The writing style was great, the world building was brilliant and the plot was awesome, so much so that I ordered all other books by this author on Amazon KU and shared them with my mum, who loved them just as much. I am so invested in this story, I loved it.

This book was everything I hoped for and then some.

The story sucked me in right from the story and kept a old of my attention. The world building and the magic system was so well written and thought out.

This book has multiple POV and two story lines which at the end intertwine by the end of the book. So nicely done. I did not want the story end at all.

I will be keeping an eye out for the next book. It is a must read.

Rich, beautiful world building with dynamic characters and fantastic magic system. It is a classic fantasy with wonderful elements of intrigue, mystery and romance. All the characters are flawed and layered, it was a joy to learn about them and their world....and the terrors that threaten it. Beautifully written, I am very much interested in seeing where this is all going.
