Should you read the Captive of the Wild Hunt by A. A. Gordon? If you love high fantasy, Celtic mythology, folklore, multiple POVs, and beautifully crafted world-building and characters, you will devour this book! I truly mean that; you will start reading Captive of the Wild Hunt and won't let go.
I found myself so immersed in this world of magical beings and intricate relationships combined with stories of pain, loss, rage, and love. I was mesmerized by it all.
We follow several POVs in this book, going between Ornella, a summer dryad; Amira, a mortal witch; Sage, a fey warrior; and others intimately interwoven into these characters' arcs.
Ornella's story is the one I love the most; her strength, resilience, and, ultimately, openness to emotions of friendship and maybe something more are a testament to her character. Even though she has gone through some horrible experiences, being a member of a patriarchal dryad society, she has slowly started to heal and maybe even find her true place in this world. The only question is—will that place be with her friend Amira and the king of the Vale, or will it be with Sage and the Wild Hunt?
Ornella's path is irrevocably changed the day she decides to protect her king and outs herself in front of the notorious warriors of the Wild Hunt, feys from the Autumn Court. When her life is threatened, and she kills one of the warriors, another dryad, her existence becomes tied to the Wild Hunt, making her a new member. Now, she finds herself in an unknown place, surrounded by strangers who think her no more than a spy. While those may be her motives at first, once she gets to know this new world and its inhabitants, mainly Sage's family, her most inner beliefs are shaken.
Her and Sage's story is beautiful to read; it is a true enemies-to-lovers story without them becoming lovers yet. The concept of "anam" instead of fated mates offers something new, and I loved how Gordon incorporated it into the story.
On the other hand, Amira's path is slightly different. Living as an outcast witch, one day, she saves a griffin, a mythical being thought to be extinct. That day, her world is changed. Her path is intertwined with Ornella, and I loved reading about their blossoming friendship. Once they learn that the griffin is actually the cursed king of the Vale, and Amira helps break the curse, a new love will slowly emerge. A love forged from a timid friendship between an ostracized witch and a griffin to a mortal witch and the king of Vale, a griffin shifter.
