Orange: A comedic short story about friendship, home and being out of this world

Rate this book
Can 52-year-old Emily Hedgerow help fly a stranded alien home when she’s never even dared go to Anglesey because she doesn’t like the bridge?

If Ford Prefect and Jessica Fletcher threw a party and it was gate-crashed by Kurt Vonnegut, this would be the perfect fireside story.

When a mysterious big orange metal box appears on the green outside her house, Emily’s curiosity and empathy override her routine and timidity and she agrees to help Jeff, the five-armed orange alien she finds inside it, return to his home planet.

Jeff is over the moon and keen to share the wonders of his orange metal box of a spaceship with the lonely prematurely-retired court artist, offering her a cure for her insulin dependent diabetes before leaving earth. In order to get back in time to realise Jeff’s dream of winning a wild space-hedgehog in a karaoke competition, they must use their combined skills and face various challenges together.

Jeff shares items with Emily such as the Overactive Positivity Generator and the Silver Linings Cloak and Emily adds her down to earth attitude and warmth. Together they co-pilot a spaceship and face the Inflammable Rex, a space monster angered by grammar pedants, which looks like someone crossed a dinosaur with a tiger and set it on fire just to annoy it.

But can Emily and Jeff survive a crash landing and overcome the threat posed by Ultimate Sad and the Killjoys? And can Jeff win the karaoke competition?

A story for all ages, ‘Orange’ shows that even when we come from different planets, a kind heart, an open mind and an emergency exit disguised as a biscuit tin can put the universal into universe.

Lovely light-hearted story about an orange alien befriending 52 year old Emily Hedgerow and taking her off in his spacecraft, where they travel to other planets, meeting a cast of quirky characters, including a dinosaur who only backs off if addressed ungrammatically and the killjoys who turn into Enjoys. Somewhat reminiscent of Douglas Adams, maybe for a younger audience.
