Detective Maria Miller #1

The Haunting on West 10th Street

Rate this book
Roses and vines run delicately across her skin, snaking from her chest to the top of her thigh. On any other day the tattoo would look beautiful. But this was her last…

When Detective Maria Miller walks up creaking stairs into the attic of the old brownstone she senses this isn’t an ordinary crime scene. The brutality of the murder is enough to shock even an experienced detective like Maria. But there’s something else. An unsettling presence seems to lurk in the shadows sending a chill through Maria’s bones, making her desperate to run back down the stairs and never return…

The killing is identical to the murder of an actress sixty years before, a crime that tore a family apart and sent shockwaves through New York City. In both cases, a satanic ritual was performed. Body parts were taken from the victims and never found.

Has the killer returned all these years later? Is there a copycat? Maria won’t let fear stop her from finding answers. Even when her relentless pursuit of the truth brings evil to her own door…

The Haunting on West 10th Street is the 1st-book in the Detective Maria Miller Police Procedural Mystery series by Helen Phifer.

In this story we follow Detective Miller and her partner, Frankie, as they investigate a brutal crime in the attic of a Greenwich brownstone, where decades earlier a beautiful actress was murdered in the same way. The detectives are puzzled by the disturbing similarities between the crimes occurring in this house.

How could they be connected? Do they just have a sadistic copycat on their hands, or something more sinister?

Immediately upon entering the brownstone, Maria feels something dark. It's a tickle in her senses; unpleasant and unsettling. The dramatic staging of the crime scene only enhances these feelings.

In both the past and present cases, body parts were removed from the victims and not recovered. Additionally, evidence of satanic rituals have been found. Who could possibly want to recreate something so evil?

This story is told using a dual timeline. We follow Maria and Frankie in the present, but we also get a historical perspective featuring the events leading up to the previous murder in the house. Lastly, we do get a modern perspective from an unknown individual, who appears to be our baddie.

I enjoyed getting the multi-perspectives, as well as the history. Although I did find the past sections a little slower-paced than the modern perspectives. With this being said, I still enjoyed the fact that it was told this way and I feel like it gave a lot of needed insight into the property and the characters involved.

The brownstone on West 10th feels like a haunting presence in this story. It becomes a character unto itself and I always appreciate when an author can provide us with such a vivid sense of place.

There is quite a bit of focus on the partnership between Maria and Frankie. They've been together for a long time and you can tell that they both care deeply for one another, but with Frankie's marriage failing, could there be something more?

I know some Readers won't care for the slight romance plot that's woven throughout this story, but for me, I found it made the characters feel more realistic.

When you're working with someone as closely as these two are, over a number of years, there's bound to be some types of complicated feelings intrinsic to that relationship.

I didn't feel like the author overplayed that, or let it overshadow the investigative aspects of the story. For me, it was blended in well and felt natural.

I did have the chance to listen to the audiobook for this one and I definitely recommend it as a format for this story. The back-and-forth between the timelines was handled well and the narration is fantastic.

Overall, this was super entertaining. I vibed well with Maria as a character and am definitely looking forward to going along on future investigations with these detectives. The ending was such a great set-up for the continuation of the series. I can't wait to see what will come their way next.

I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys darker, Police Procedural Mysteries. Particularly, if you are a Horror fan like me, this may work really well for your tastes. Phifer definitely has a knack for incorporating some paranormal aspects into her mysteries.

Thank you to the publisher, Storm Publishing, for providing me with a copy to read and review. I can't wait to continue on with this series!

A symphony of the supernatural that will resonate deep within your soul…..

Book Information

“The Haunting on West 10th Street” by Helen Phifer is a 280-page supernational crime thriller first published on April 26, 2018, and scheduled for rerelease on October 19, 2023. Thank you to Storm Publishing for providing me with an advance reader copy of this book for review.

Summary

Detective Maria Miller of the NYPD is a staunch advocate for cold, hard facts. However, when a grisly murder unfolds in a Greenwich Village brownstone with eerie ties to the supernatural, she's determined to uncover a rational explanation before the killer strikes again. Unbeknownst to her, this heinous crime has a chilling history, and Miller must discern whether it's the same culprit, a copycat, or something more sinister.

My Thoughts

Helen Phifer's "The Haunting on West 10th Street" is an excellent book that skillfully combines elements of horror, the supernatural, romance, murder, thriller, and detective genres. Phifer's writing is both well-crafted and accessible, making it an easy and quick read. With its irresistible blend of supernatural intrigue and murder mystery, this book is the dark and delicious secret you'll want to share with everyone.

The story unfolds with a dual timeline, alternating between the past and the present, effectively showing how a haunting that began in the past continues to affect the present. This narrative structure adds depth and intrigue to the plot, keeping readers engaged.

One of the standout features of the book is the well-developed characters who populate its pages. They are relatable and add depth to the story, making it easy for readers to connect with them.

Phifer masterfully weaves suspense and mystery throughout the narrative, keeping readers guessing with plenty of red herrings. While there are definite horror aspects to the book, it leans more towards being a paranormal thriller than outright horror. The gruesome murders and the ominous presence she creates contribute to the overall creepiness and enjoyment of the story. Phifer's storytelling prowess shines as she conjures a hauntingly vivid world where the line between the living and the dead blurs into a captivating nightmare.

The book strikes a great balance between detective and supernatural elements, offering a unique mix that keeps the reader engaged. It's a suspenseful read that also manages to incorporate moments of humor, making it a well-rounded experience.

One minor criticism lies in the handling of some character reveals. Some reveals later in the story may leave readers flipping back through the pages to recall their significance. It would have been preferable for characters with a major role in the story to receive more backstory and development.

Recommendation

"The Haunting on West 10th Street" is an excellent, well-told, and well-delivered creepy story that will keep you enthralled. While it may not be the type of book that will have you losing sleep or jumping at shadows, it excels as a paranormal thriller, offering a satisfying blend of suspense, mystery, and the supernatural. Helen Phifer's talent for creating an eerie atmosphere and her skillful storytelling make this book a great read for fans of the genre.

Do you believe in evil? 👿 After reading this chilling crime thriller you will.

This story takes place in the present day and in 1952. Maria and her partner Frankie are given a cold case of a crime they had investigated three years before after it’s been linked to a similar crime that happened in 1952. Maria soon realizes they aren’t dealing with anything they’ve dealt with before. That things she never believed existed actually do and she’s in for the fight of her life.
This is my first book by this author, but it won’t be my last. She tells a story so well you feel like you’re right there, a part of the story. Of course, it could be because I’m a New Yorker. 😉 She’s not lying about those milkshakes at Black Tap. I highly recommend them and this book!!

Triggers: Murder, Kidnapping, and Stalking.

Thank you to NetGalley and Storm Publishing for the chance to read this for a review. All thoughts are my own.

Shes a fantastic author so gave this book a read..Detective Maire Miller and her partner Frankie Conroy on a murder case this happened years ago three years ago is it the same killer or is there sinister paranormal creepy things happening...my rating is 3.5 rounded to four as still prefer her crime books..looking forward to reading more of her books..

They question who could possibly want to recreate something so evil? The story is told in a dual timeline with Maria and Frankie in the present, and a historical perspective featuring the events leading up to the past murder in the house. We are also offered a modern perspective from an unknown individual, who appears to maybe be the "bad guy". I liked getting the multi-perspectives as well as the history. The past sections were a bit slower paced than the modern perspectives, but helpful when putting it all together. It helped to give the needed insight into the property and all the characters involved. The house itself became a major character itself in the story providing lots of chills and unexpected activities. Fans of haunted house stories and good murder mysteries will more than likely really like this offering.

Great Read!

Detective Maria Miller and her partner investigate what looks to be an occult murder. In 1952 another occult murder where the victims head was chopped off also happened there. This was a great read that I finished quickly. It was very creepy and filled with supernatural suspense. I can’t wait to read the next one!

Skeptical NYPD Homicide Detective Maria Miller only believes in cold hard facts. But a gruesome murder at Greenwich Village brownstone seems to point straight to a paranormal source. Determined to unearth a rational explanation, she vows to find the culprit before he strikes again. But Maria is about to learn that this atrocious crime is far from unique, An identical slaughter rocked the same house decades ago, and Miller must determine if it's the same culprit, a copycat, or something much darker. When Miller becomes the killer's next target, will her stubborn cynicism save her or send her to the other side?

This book was first published on April 26th, 2018.

This book was totally different from all the other books I've read by the author. I really liked the two main characters, Frankie and Maria. The story has a dual timeline - the past when an identical slaughter took place in the house, and the present day. The characters are well-developed. This is a suspenseful read that has some humour to it. This is a quick read.

I would like to thank #NetGalley #StormPublishing and the author #HelenPhifer for my ARC of #TheHauntingOnWest10thStreet in exchange for an honest review.

So, I started reading this book without paying once again to the title. And, as I’m reading I’m thinking, boy, you must suspend some believe, but I’m still enjoying it! Then, I notice the title has the word “horror” in it. And, true to the word, there are definitely some horror aspects to this book, but , hey, some people might still believe that this could happen! It was an easy, enjoyable read. The majority of the characters are very likable! And, beyond the horror, it is a good mystery, detective book! So, take a lazy afternoon and enjoy!!

Unfortunately this book fell a bit flat for me. It was jarring to read so many Britishisms in a book set in NYC with a born and bred New Yorker as the main character. The bones of Maria made for a great female lead, but most everything about each character didn't go far beyond surface level. There were also a lot of broad generalizations about devil worship/Satanism. It felt a bit unbelievable, or not thoroughly researched.

I did enjoy the dual timelines, definitely liked the glimpse into the past and how it wove into the present day. But I did feel like the romance b-plot and Frankie's personal life didn't add much to the story. I know it's to be the first in a series (I believe a version of this book was already published in the UK as well), but there were a lot of different things going on, introducing so many characters and pieces of their lives that didn't relate to the cases. It seemed disjointed. Plus everything wrapped up SO quickly! Not the greatest pay off.

I really wanted to like this more, especially since the premise and cover are so intriguing! And I wouldn't really classify this as horror, more a supernatural mystery - it didn't really pack a frightening punch. If you like a paranormal mystery/thriller that's not complicated, this may be for you. And who knows, maybe the next book in the series will be tighter and more up my alley. I'm not turned off the writer or the characters, so I could be convinced to read more!

Thank you to NetGalley and Storm Publishing for my advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review - expected publication October 19, 2023.

Maybe I had too high of an expectation for this? It started off interesting enough & was having the creepiness settle in. Then it just started going into different directions that I didn’t care about. I didn’t care about Maria’s dates, I didn’t care about Frankie’s crumbling marriage, & I certainly didn’t care about their feelings toward each other, which borders on a love triangle. Which had no place for this kind of book. I like having some background on the characters, but maybe I didn’t care for these two anyway. I just ended up being bored & disappointed. From the ending, I’m guessing this will be a new series. Will not read further than this one.

Hugely enjoyable haunted house yarn that is part thriller, part horror, part supernatural and part police procedural.
The story is told in two time lines, present day and back in the 50s. It’s a device that is used often in novels but it’s works especially well here with the balance being perfect and each era being as interesting as the other.

The characters here are likeable and well written and we even have a love story in the middle of all the mayhem.

I had great fun reading this. Confidently written, the book never loses its way and the author obviously knew where she was going with the story throughout. It’s also a perfect length and doesn’t over stay its welcome or feel padded out at any stage.

I hope the author resurrects the characters at a later stage for another outing as this was a really really fun read.

Many thanks to the publisher for the ARC through Netgalley.

As the title suggests, this supernatural crime thriller is the first in a new detective series of “strange occurrences”. Detective Maria Miller and her partner Franky have been working together for years. When a cold case lands on their desk, they are thrust into a supernatural investigation that they didn’t see coming.

The story is told through various timelines and perspectives. It was a terrific October “haunted house” read that sent chills up my spine. There were some gruesome scenes and a decent amount of tension and scare factor.

I only wish that the characters were better developed. They were lacking in depth so it was difficult to care about what happened to them. I’m confident though that as the series continues, we will get to know these characters better. The plot moved along at a galloping pace and the audio performance was dynamic. It’s so hard to find a good balance of crime and supernatural so I’m psyched that this author will be writing more. Looking forward to reading more of this series.

A murder mystery with wonderful main characters and supporting cast. A vivid plot that grabs you from the beginning. Unplug your phone. Don't answer the door. And hang on for a ride. Detective Maria Miller and her partner are called to a crime scene that duplicates a 60 year old gruesome murder. And I put my life on hold until I finished reading this book. Not disappointed. Lucky me; there's 2 more books in this series.

✨ 𝐀 𝐆𝐋𝐈𝐌𝐏𝐒𝐄 𝐎𝐅 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐂𝐇𝐀𝐑𝐀𝐂𝐓𝐄𝐑𝐒 𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐏𝐋𝐎𝐓:
Detective Maria Miller and her partner, Frankie, were tasked with unraveling an unsolved murder mystery at the house on West 10th Street. However, instead of merely identifying the killer, they're about to stumble upon unimaginable secrets within the house.

✨ 𝐌𝐘 𝐓𝐇𝐎𝐔𝐆𝐇𝐓𝐒 𝐀𝐁𝐎𝐔𝐓 𝐈𝐓:
I started with the second book of the Detective Maria Miller series, so I already knew a lot of spoilers, but that didn't bother me. I was really rooting for Frankie and Maria to take their relationship to the next level. However, after reading the first book, I now realize just how deep Maria Miller and Frankie Conroy's friendship truly is. It must have been incredibly difficult for them to even consider transitioning from being lifelong best friends and partners to something romantic. My heart goes out to Frankie; his love for Maria is so genuine, and he deserves someone who feels the same way about him. As much as I wanted to believe that Harrison Williams was the perfect match for Maria, I couldn't shake the feeling that there was something off about him, like he was hiding something. Plus, I didn't sense any real chemistry between Maria and Harrison. On a brighter note, I absolutely adored seeing the friendship between Emilia, Missy, and Maria blossom. Their bond felt so authentic and heartwarming. It was incredibly satisfying to see them come together to solve the case, even with the spooky haunted house element. Despite the horror aspects, it wasn't as terrifying as I had anticipated. I thoroughly enjoyed following the journey of Maria, Frankie, Emilia, Missy, Harrison, and the rest of the characters as they worked to crack the case. And in the end, justice prevailed, which was a great relief.

✨ 𝐑𝐄𝐂𝐎𝐌𝐌𝐄𝐍𝐃𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍𝐒:
If you're a fan of horror, occult, thrillers, or mystery cases, this book is a must-read for you.

A fast-paced paranormal detective mystery that spooky you real bad. A recent crime scene has unearthed a long-forgotten case from 60 years ago. Almost every 10 years a woman dies in mysterious ways and the evidence suggests there foul things at play here. A cop lead mystery that involves, devils, incantations and blood sacrifices. The book did manage to keep me off the trail for the first half.

I could sniff something fishy from time to time, but the book does not give you any points to validate your theory. The ending felt a little oversimplified to me, but it works for most of the cases (defeating the devil is not that hard after all).

The Haunting  on West 10th Street  by Helen Phifer (originally published as The House on West 10th Street) is a mystery novel with more than a hint of the supernatural.

First, let me thank NetGalley, the publisher Storm Publishing  and of course the author, for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

My Synopsis:    (No major reveals, but if concerned, skip to My Opinions)
Three years ago, NYPD Detective Maria Miller and her partner Frankie Conroy were called to a horrific crime that was never truly solved. A headless body was found in a brownstone on West 10th Street. They never found the head. Maria has never forgotten this gruesome case.

Now, Maria and Frankie are again looking into this brownstone. Their boss approached them when his daughter, now a reporter, found additional information. Apparently, 52 years ago, another headless corpse was found at that same address. Although the original owner & his wife are now dead, their son in a psychiatric ward, their daughter Emelia still owns, and resides in the house.

Although Maria is not a believer in the supernatural, it doesn’t take long for her to start wondering. There is a bad feeling about the house, a bad smell, and strange noises. She starts to wonder whether the son had been trying to summon a demon…and someone else is trying to finish the job. One more body, and that demon may be free to roam New York.

My Opinions:
This was a really entertaining book. I loved the relationship between Maria and Frankie. The characters were well thought out, and their dialogues and actions felt right. The plot was great, and flowed smoothly. The book was suspenseful, and had touches of humor that surprised me. It was really hard to put down.

Although most of this authors books are more crime related, this series is more paranormal crime....and it's great!  Talented author!

So, this is a re-read for me....and my opinions really haven't changed.  I loved the book!

I continue to hope that there will be more than one in this series (this first one was originally published 5 years ago).  Perhaps now that there is a new publisher?   I need more of Maria and Frankie!

Maria Miller and her partner Frankie Conroy are homicide detectives in the Big Apple. One day they are called out for a bad one - the corpse is only a torso, with blood surrounding it and no head nor limbs anywhere. Then Maria opens the fridge...

Three years later and the case is still unsolved. One day their boss pulls them into their office. Apparently the boss' daughter is writing a paper on cold cases including this one. Oh, and by the way, a nearly identical murder happened in the same house - but in 1952. A satanic ritual looks to have been performed at deaths. Could it be the same person? Or is there just something about the house?

Part mystery and part horror, this was a great story. At first I thought the dual timelines from present day and 1952 were a bit much, but it ended up being exactly what the story needed. I liked the characters and look forward to seeing them again. All in all, a fun book!

This was something really different from Helen Phifer and I really did enjoy it but also the best part is this is book 1 of a brand new series and I’m really looking forward to the next instalments.
So although this is a mystery thriller it also has a supernatural element which worked well for me and it most certainly was creepy without being a full on horror story. I loved the two main characters of Marie and Frankie both were very likeable and well written and I can’t wait to read more about the two of them and their ongoing story. The book is written in two timelines past and present with these two timelines coming together as the book drew to a very exciting conclusion.
I loved that this read was something different I raced through it and for me that’s always a sign of a great read and it was! So what more can you ask for it’s one not to be missed and a read I would highly recommend, many thanks to Helen Phifer …please write quick I need the next book !!

really enjoyed this read.
Ghost of New York book one.
As we meet NYPD Homicide Detective Maria Miller and her partner Frankie Conroy, on the trail of a large Homicide at West 10th Street a suspect in the new apartments, walking up the creaky stairs, then that coppery smell hits Maria and its not a pretty sight.
This book also takes us back in time to 1952 in West 10th Street and Emilia Carter these two stories bond together.
A powerful book that I was hooked reading, excellent right through.

Not really my cup of tea.
None it came across as believable, and I found the difference in story telling, from torn limbs, to slightly twee lunches at beginning just a bit weird.

Well first off it’s not really a haunting, as haunting are ghosts. I didn’t get into this book until all most the middle. It starts off right away with a murder and than instantly changes narrative to a different year and person. I found it hard to keep track at first and you don’t have a chance to know who’s involved with what. Once you get into the rhythm and start to know the characters it gets easier to be involved in the story. I’m not sure if I would recommend it or not. #TheHauntingonWest10thStreet #NetGalley

This story is about two brutal ritualistic murders 70 years apart with identical MOs and Detective Maria Miller and her partner Frankie who are trying to solve the case which appears to involve devil worship and human sacrifice in attempt to summon a demon. This is a great mix between murder mystery and paranormal genres.

This is told through dual timelines, past and present, and from different character points of view but it is easy to follow.

As the title suggests, The Haunting on West 10th Street is a crime horror/thriller story intermingling supernatural experiences with thrilling crime adventures.
The book starts off by gripping you right where it hurts and chilling you to your core.

The entire time I was reading this book, I felt on-edge, always looking behind me while I read in the dark (bad idea btw).
Helen Phifer has an expertise in making you feel all the creeps while taking you on a rollercoaster ride of emotions.
The separation of timelines was masterful and added to the fun of trying to guess what will happen as a reader. The connections between the two timelines are very fluid and filled with shocking revelations. Helen did a great job at painting the picture for readers in a way that felt effortless and easy to follow along with.

I recommend this for anyone who enjoys thriller, horror, mystery, and/or crime novels. You won't regret this read.

WoW! WoW!!!!!!! The Haunting on West 10th Street by Helen Phifer
and Narrated by Stephanie Canon was a totally gripping supernatural crime thriller and was a audiobook I could not turn off! Especially as its the first book in a new Detective Maria Miller Police Procedural Mystery series.....Exciting!!! and I loved it.

Within this book you meet NYPD homicide detectives Maria Miller and Frank Conroy and they are great characters. This is a great start to a excellent new series.

Big 5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ and I highly recommend this book or audiobook.

Big thank you to netgalley and storm publishing and the brillaint author Helen phifer for an early copy of her book.
